Chris's Fish Bar in Hounslow

Used to be able to rely on decent fish and chips from Chris’s but sadly no longer. The fish this evening was 50% batter .The chips were OK…nothing special. The quality has really deteriorated since they reopened after a fire .

Awful.. only ever asks my mum and I to pay cash but let’s everyone else pay by card and has no shame in hiding it for what reason I don’t know. Went this evening and ordered 2 regular chips which looked like half a small portion and when I stated “the portions are getting smaller” he actually nodded at me and said this is regular! The owner has a stinking attitude! This used to be such a lovely happy shop but it has seriously gone down hill! This place used to be our regular but we will NEVER go back! The chips were like mush and definitely undercooked! The picture included has had no chips taken from it!! Literally the size of the little white bag they put them in. Disgraceful

This place was terrible, the fish was mushy like it sat out for a while and when asking for tartar sauce and ketchup for the chips they gave me 2 small packets of each. Asked for more and they said no, had to buy a bottle for 2 pounds!! If you can’t spare extra ketchup and tartar sauce you shouldn’t be selling fish and chips…

Just came back to this place after not having been for aaaaages and the chips and fishcake is still a great option. Nice mushy peas and thick chips. Also had a lovely multi lingual chat with the seriously multi lingual man working there,wow. feeling happy now 😊💚 🐟 thank you

I always see this place on my way to Turnham Green, so popped in to get the Fish and Chips last week, but didn’t find the person at the counter very friendly. The Fish and Chips was good, but nothing exceptional about it, may be just coz I didn’t find the experience welcoming.

hi, - went in there earlier on, and just because i have a large beard they asked me if i was muslim, - because they don't make halal food, but i don't know, its all private to me, and i declined to answer that. a silly charge to eat in, and the condiments made for by nonsense makes, was like 40p a sachet!. there are for sure different and better even fish and chip shops around, even if you have to travel a bit more, for better service, and better food. i did not like that i had to answer to my identity. food was ok, but i am sure years back it was better. oh, and by the way, the owner and worker's there, don't look like no 'Chris' to me. how's that!. not worth a visit much unless there is nowhere else to find. thanks.

£12 for a medium fish and chips is fair but at least give me a decent portion of chips. They even confirmed it is med chips. Not happy won’t go back

Low profile spot that serves classic fish and chips. Broad choice of fish types (cod, haddock, rock, plaice and skate) plus chicken, calamari and scampi…plus a few savories. Pricing is average and “Take Away Prices Only” under the signs shows they heard the complaints. Food is solidly very good, not very greasy, and attractive to the eye. Certainly not the disaster others have experienced, and perfectly good for a chippie.

Freshly cooked fish and chips. Reasonable priced. My only complaint we were charged extra to eat in and then advised would be charged extra for condiments and takeaway box. Have not experienced this at any other chip shop. Apart from that friendly staff and toasty food.

Amazing chip shop, they used to do the best cod roe fritters. Must visit again next time in in the area

Chris’ used to be good but it has gone down hill. Tonight’s chips were: full of black eyes; under cooked; grey in colour and absolutely tasteless. How can Chris’ produce such bad chips? It’s really not that difficult to fry chips.

An excellent service. They do what is necessary to serve you in the best way possible. The food is delicious and the warmth of the people is incredible.

What you want from a chippy. I only ordered chips and mushy peas. Chips were fat and tasty, could do with a bit more seasoning during frying but I just added it after with vinegar. Mushy peas were okay, also needs a bit more seasoning as they were quite plain. Service and staff are lovely.

Good portion size but tbh the quality of the chips was pretty poor - perhaps had an old batch given other reviewers seem to think they’re okay

Really slow service. No warning that my fish and chips would take 15 minutes to make. Very expensive for the small portions. Not as good as this place used to be unfortunately

New Update: I somehow found myslef wonderining in here again for some chips. £5.50 for large chips. Very disappointed when I got home to find it more like a medium portion. Empty £25kg sack of potatos outside, nice(!), could at least wait until the end of the day to put your rubbish out. Did find out they cost £15 online. Grove Park Fish and Chips definity better, and cheaper. Update to review: didnt understand a word i said and I am English and lived in Chiswick for 40 years. Review based on my latest visit. Person serving didnt understand my order so got it wrong. Small portion of chips with all the bottom of the bag bits. Put salt and vinger on without asking. Battered sausage was extremely greeley and microwaved the curry sauce so it was just about warm. Are there any good fish and chips shops left in Chiswick?

Sadly food has really gone down hill since the new owners took over. I went to Chris’s for last 30 years and it’s just not the same anymore. Given the price increases the portion sizes of the chips are very cheap. I also got food poisoning after my last visit. I am guessing from the fish. I’m sad to say there are way better places to have fish and chips in London now.

Sadly on the decline - used to be a top fish bar run by professionals who knew their job and customers. Now it’s a poorly run cook to order joint where the finished food is half the size and half as good as it used to be. Trading on the fact that it’s the only fish bar in the area. Took nearly 20 minutes to cook a portion of chips - the opposite of a fast food joint 😂

Since new ownership the food has gone downhill despite the prices going uphill! Chip portion sizes are shocking. Youd think with the price increase the portions would stay the same or if anything, alot bigger! I questioned this and was told everything has gone up. I understand retailers have to pass on the price to customers but thats if the service still matches that price, and unfortunately now it doesnt. Battered sausage i could only compare to chewy leather? Definitely not getting much bang for your buck from this place anymore. Photos added of the current menu and prices (Oct 2023). Saveloy £2.50, Jumbo sausage £2.50, battered sausage £2.80, cod £9. Chip butty is listed as £3 yet medium chips is £3.50 - bizarre! Also to add, if you want to dine in i believe its an extra 70p per person.

This Fish & Chips shop used to be a high quality shop with always fresh fish and friendly service but unfortunately the quality and the service has gone down significantly . I can say that I had the best Fish & Chips in London in this shop a couple of years ago, but now the quality of the fish has become very poor. We ordered Cod & Chips and upon payment the owner (a bald man) commanded with a rude attitude for cash payment. I told him now a days no one carries cash around and almost all payments are made by card or phone. He could have at least asked for a cash payment in a polite manner. He then rudely followed by saying that if you want to order next time to bring cash. This might be due to Tax evasion issues that needs to be investigated by Chiswick Council as why the owner demands cash payments. On the quality level, the quality of the fish was very poor and the fish was not fresh, the fish tasted old and tough, not tender as it is supposed to be. I do not advise to go to this shop if you want a good quality (even medium quality) Fish & Chips although is the past I used to advise friends and family to go to this shop.

My Dad asked to post this. This is our regular fish & Chip shop. Dad said he recently had the best bit of rock salmon he had eaten in years. The chips are the best we have eaten and all the staff are friendly. 5 *

I purchased 2 x cod & chips, 1 was nice but the other 1 had very soggy batter which I had to remove.

An amazing dish ,fish and chips ,prepared so professionally that it is tender ,not oily and the chips were so delicious .A Huge thank You goes to Shiv for the excellent customer service ..Sure will visit again.. Must try , highly recommended..

Poor service we simply ordered 2 portion of chips and the 2 customers who followed were served before us, they advised us to wait 2 - 3 mins at the time of purchase and made us wait over 10 minutes so they can serve other customers who came later, appalling service

Fish and chips were exceptionally fresh and very tasty with every mouthful. Portion size is just right real value for money. Whatever the recipe for the batter or the oil used please don't ever change it.

I came in at 10:30 and asked for haddock and chips, but was told they only had cod available as they were an hour from closing. I was served a soggy piece of fish that made me sick later on. The staff clearly do not care.

Great fare prepared by smooth operators. And the craic is mighty! Always up for a joke, with each other and the customers if they are not too boring. They know now what a ‘fish supper’ is, and that they serve chips in a ‘poke’.

Running a chippy is hard work, harder than ever at the moment, and these boys work very hard, serving up quality fish and chips, and all the other bits. Use it or lose it.

Dropped by after a days training in London as I really didn’t want to cook after being a chef of 22 years. I was greeted by 2 friendly gentleman one more senior than the other. Within the first minute of arrival my order was taken where I was informed it would be 5mins. Having ordered one sausage and chips I added another last minute incase the ‘not hungry’ girlfriend kept asking for one more bite. This wasn’t an issue and didn’t delay the order. Batter was super crispy and cooked well, the chips were chunky and large but reasonably crisp and fluffy on the inside. Personally I like my chips a little crispier but that’s personal preference. I would happy return in the future. Chef

This place is very hit and miss lately. Sometimes everything is just right & others a disaster. Have on a few occasions had to return items that were not cooked fully and have had missing items that not noticed until got home. Sometimes food not hot in cabinets and worryingly could cause illness. Be careful if you ask them to salt your chips as they literally throw a ton over the chips. I had to ask them to take them back and put a quarter amount of what he put on them. It's OK if you like a lot of salt but I prefer salt with my chips not chips with my salt. Lately the staff are not as friendly, especially the older man with glasses who tends to take the orders and wraps the food. It's a shame there's no real competitor for them here in Chiswick as I feel they know they can get away with things knowing that they have local monopoly. Updated 12/04/2022. Returned here & even though this time the fish & chips were good I ordered a Chicken & Mushroom Pie only yo find that it had gone off when I got home. I noticed that they took it from warming cabinet & placed in microwave so can only assume that the appliance is isn't working. I returned the pie & there was no apology & instead trying to give me replacement or extra chips with an alternative item I asked for as don't trust their pies. Beware what you get here. Despite being a rather loyal customer for many years I feel they do not care. Further Update. Came her again and very disappointed. I ordered battered sausage & rather than taking one of the whole ones I was given one that had been cut in half. Portion sizes dramatically reduced as well. Refused to accept this & asked for a refund. Worker tried to appeal to me to accept replacement but I declined & took my refund. Absolutely horrendous service. Won't return again.

Avoid this place this is not the original Chris’s fish bar that was established in 1927 by Chris the original owner who sold authentic fish and chip in affluent area. Visited on 23 Jan 2023. Ordered Haddock (x2) and shared chili’s and mushy peas. Fish cooked to order and fresh and delicious. Chips are mushy peas very tasty. We are served by Abdul who was a great host very welcoming and friendly. Will definetly visit again.

Awful. Pie was mouldy when I opened it. Went back and tge guy them gave me a second pie which was semi cold!! Not the place to go to if you don’t want to get poisoned. Their attitude was terrible - just smiling at me and saying we’ll give you another pie!! They weren’t bothered at all by the hygiene and final cooking condition of the food.
