This was our second visit and it was as good as the last. The service was fast and the food was excellent and the staff made us feel welcome. Nothing was to much trouble, my wife has an allergy to certain food ingredients and this was dealt with without fuss as the staff appeared to have no problem dealing with food allergy issues. The menu had a wide variety of options that should suit most tastes at reasonable prices.

Vistes here a few times. Sitting in is much better than takeaway. That being said I don’t rate the food high. The rice goes very hard once it cools and the flavours are just traditional to me. It does get some good comments but Chinese being one of my favourite takeaway foods, it just doesn’t hit the mark for me.

We would certainly eat here on a future stay in Uppjngham. At first glance from the outside the restaurant looks a bit unpreposessing - you can't see beyond the take-away counter. However, the interior is surprisingly spacious, with very attractive décor. An extensive menu, and the food is delicious. Highly recommended.

We returned to Choi's after many years and were very impressed. The decor has remained similar, it is well looked after, clean and very authentic. The host was very welcoming and made us right at home, remaining both friendly and non intrusive throughout the evening. We chose to all (four of us) have the second special menu with included mixed starters, crispy duck pancakes, and a variety of main meals. The food was plentiful and well spaced, we were given sufficent time between courses to relax and enjoy the atmosphere. Overall the food was worth every penny, it was delicous, well cooked and throughly enjoyable. Wil definately be returning soon!

The food is very good all freshly prepared, so be prepared for a little wait. The service is fantastic. The only disappointment for me was the special set menu rule, you have to have a minimum of two people pay for it. Not so good when you are the only awkward vegetarian at the table.

What a find. I have driven past this restaurant for years and have never considered going for a meal. My wife and I were on a date night, arranged quickly as we had to pick our son up from Stamford later that evening. It doesn’t look much from the outside, probably the reason I had never been before, but it supports the adage don’t judge a book by its cover. We were met by friendly staff and shown to a table, Menu options were traditional fare and we did the usual look at what other people were eating! The food on other tables looked wonderful and smelled delicious. Drinks were ordered and delivered in good time and there was no over zealous waiting staff trying to get you to order which was refreshing. We decided that we couldn’t decide what we wanted so we chose a set meal- now that required a decision too as they have a good range of options. We chose the Malaysian set meal - the starter came after a small wait and you could tell it was all freshly cooked. Chicken on a skewer, chicken wrapped in leaves, prawn in batter and a spring roll with ‘seaweed’ it also included a sweet chilli dipping sauce. All lovely and very tasty. Then there was the duck course - 6 pancakes which was beautifully cooked tasty crispy skin and fresh onion and cucumber. Main course comprised three dishes all very tasty and well prepared. There was a chicken dish similar to black bean, a prawn dish with good spice and a beef dish with coconut which was superb. The rice provided was great too. Highlight for me was you ate from a small bowl with chopsticks which made it a great experience. Without a doubt we will be returning to sample the other set meals. The service was attentive but not oppressive perfect.

This was the last Chinese I have tried in order to make a comparison between competitors in Uppingham. The entry and waiting area are far superior to most takeaways, most likely because it’s linked to the main restaurant, via a beaded curtain. The welcome was excellent from the proprietor I think. Menu was straightforward. I had special chow mein, egg fried rice and barbecued spare ribs. All were freshly prepared and service was prompt. Best thing was that there was not a lot of slushy sauce, in the chow mein as is too often the case with most takeaways. Ribs were very meaty. We will be back, perhaps to sample restaurant also.

We had 3 courses; a vegetarian sharing starter, soup and a selection of main dishes. For me, the highlight was the sharing starter; from the delicate tempura vegetables to the spring rolls, "seaweed" and, weirdly, samosas. The whold thing was delicious. My partner's chicken and noodle soup was also delicious; my hot and sour soup not so much. It was neither hot nor sour and only managed to achieve a rather non-descrip equilibrium. The most off-putting aspect though was the consistency - it was gelatinous even when hot and thickened as it cooled. I was half way through it when it virtually set in the bowl. I had the impression that if I had tipped the bowl over and removed it, the soup would have held it's shape like a jelly.Of the 3 main dishes, the satay vegetables was the worst - basically chunky peanut butter sauce with only a hint of chili covering the overcooked veg; yuk. Large mussels in black bean sauce were much better; the mussels were delicious and there was just the right amount of heat and flavour in the sauce. Finally the scallops with cashews was nice but there wasn't enough of either, and the whole dish was very pale.

Booked late on a Saturday night, was a little apprehensive as everywhere else in Uppingham was fully booked and yet plently of space here. Food came within minutes (reheated not fresh). A few mouthfuls in one of the party found an insect in the food. We reported to management who apologised but we did not want another mouthful so left shortly afterwards. We understand that this could have been an unfortunate incident but reheated meals is not what you expect when going to a restaurant for the evening. Prices were not cheap and did not reflect the quality. Book early and book elsewhere

Ended up here whilst in business. Initially wanted something a little healthier and I knew of I came here, I'd be too tempted to order everything battered on the menu! However, Lakes didn't open until 7pm so here I came. Lovely service and very speedy. Drinks came immediately and gave me time to have a good look at the menu. Nice varied menu without being too much to choose from. Ordered salt and chilli squid and wanton soup to start. Was put in 5 minutes, nice and hot and looked very appealing. Excellent to both. Fresh ingredients and well seasoned. Mains was coconut boiled rice and scallops with pak choi. Again, very tasty and well cooked. Would've liked a couple more scallops but it was very nice so no complaints. Bill came to £33.90 with two beers so more than happy with that. I rarely give 5* reviews because I eat at some top restaurants due to my work but this was pretty close. Well done, Choi, very pleasent experience.

The restaurant was very smart and the staff were friendly. We ordered the salt chilli squid and Spring rolls for a starter, the prawn crackers were fresh and crispy, strangely there were no condiments on the table at all. The spring rolls were nice and my starter of squid was quite substantial, but mainly because it was extremely thick batter, although it was simply squid in batter, covered in salt with slices of raw chilli, the flavour was ok, but there was so much salt on it that I had to bang the salt of each piece to make it edible. Nicely presented, we were given lemon in water to wash our fingers but it was ice cold, so not really very useful for greasy fingers.

Good quality food and by far the best we have sampled so far since moving into Rutland. We will be using regularly just need to crispy up the beef and reduce the volume of batter on the chicken balls. Chicken noodles were the best we have ever had and the room for improvement comments are minor points compared to the overall quality and taste which was good.

My wife and I went to Choi's on Friday night which was also coincided with the first day of the Bird Fair. We had booked a table and arrived to a half empty restaurant and a little confusion at the front desk people coming and going. As we sat down we ordered drinks while looking through the menu. After a short time it a group of about 20 people from the bird fair arrived over the next 30 mins and everything almost stopped. We had ordered one of the set menus and had received the starters when we had to remind them of drinks we ordered. The mains although good food took almost an hour to come out to us and the choice of desert was tea/coffee or ice cream, which we ordered to find they had virtually none left and had icicle in as it had been re-frozen at some point. I fully understand that a large group of 20 will put pressure on the serving staff, but the restaurant was not full. Personally I think the set menus are a little overpriced. The mains of chicken & ginger, crispy beef and pork were good, but 2 and half hours for the 4 course meal was too long and likely to make us think twice before we do.

We were told it was a Chinese takeaway but this is only part of what is n offer here. Food is fresh, smells of cooking get the mouth watering and the service is personal and reassuring, perfection... We had a set meal and the advice and descriptions given by the staff left us wanting the whole menu. This is an eastern restaurant serving chinese, maylasian and thai food. You walk into an establishment which oozes eastern charm from the Chinese lanterns hanging from the ceiling to the wall decorations. It is exceptionally clean and the seating is perfect with wooden chairs with cushions and ample seating which is not over crowded. You know it is a first class establishment as the first thing on your table other than the menus is a finger bowl. The table is laid with cuterly and also chop sticks. They are laid with dark red tablecloths which adds to the ambience. They supplies bowls for the main meal which in most chinese restaurants you have to ask for.The food is excellent. When I say traditional, let me explain. I've never been to China so can't compare Choi's to an authentic Chinese dining experience. But when it comes to a British Chinese experience it pushes every button and ticks every box... and then some!Interior is suitably adorned with woodcut pictures, lanterns, red wooden screens and obviously Koi Carp. Music is proper Chinese versions of Simon & Garfunkel and others. Staff are delightfully polite and efficient, it's a great place even before the food comes.Menu has all the usual dishes along with some Thai and Malaysian set meals which I know are also a joy.The food is everything it should be but kind of better... every dish will be familiar to anyone who's had more than a half dozen "take always" in their life. Crispy Duck, Sweet and Sour Chicken, Sesame Toast; all familiar dishes but cooked to perfection and in some way tastier and fresher than normal. I think it comes down to nothing more than a good chef and fresh ingredients but the result is amazing, just lovely, lovely food. No fuss, no pretensions. We go back again and again.

We were planning to get some fish and chips but saw Choi's and thought we'd give it a go. Hadn't been for a long time and won't be going back anytime soon. Virtually empty on a Friday night. Food was mediocre, men's toilets had really bad damp over the walls and then towards the end of our meal an ant started walking across the table. When I brought it to the attention of the waitress she simply smiled and squashed it on the table cloth and left it there. Then two or three more appeared including one rather ironically inside the the wallet serving the bill and two chocolates! We paid and left ASAPand noticing a dead fish in their internal pond! Not the Chois I used to love. Hate to think what state the kitchen is when front of house is lacking attention to detail. Oh and yes the staff was miserable even before the ants! Back to Pangs in Stamford from now on. No excuse in this day and age for such poor standards

I really like their food esp the fish cakes, monk fish and veg curry. The staff can be full of attitude though, especially to takeaway customers, and not because the restruarant is busy either. Service with a smile is always recommended, but more so if you are going to nip into the kitchen and prepare my food. But the real shocker about this place is the dead fish in the fishpond! For months now there is constantly a dead fish or 2 in the fish pond? It is impossible to enjoy your fish cakes after seeing that!

We have visited Choi's in the past and found it to be very good, however, I don't know quite what has happened to the place but we certainly won't be going back again. The restaurant was empty and the whole time we were seated no-one came in to the restaurant or for takeaway food (bad sign). We ordered our food and bearing in mind that we were a party of four the food appeared in a matter of minutes - obviously not cooked from fresh as one would expect. The quarter duck was pathetically small, only enough to fill 3 pancakes, the garnish on the plate was a manky piece of parsley and a very old, brown dried up piece of carved carrot. The kung po chicken was disgusting, the pieces/cubes of chicken were hard and saturated with fat, completely unappetising. The roast pork crispy noodle dish was disappointing as well, only having a small amount of pork and swimming in gravy. We expressed our thoughts to the waitress, but this was a waste of time as she couldn't understand English very well and could only smile and say 'sorry', we asked to speak to the manager but the waitress was on her own and the chef couldn't even speak English.Overall the food was unappealing, re-heated rubbish! I don't recommend this place and I certainly won't be returning to waste my money again.

We used to live in uppingham and used to come here regularly so when we came back we were cautious about how it would be,Well it was exactly the same as years ago which means even though I think the décor is a bit dated especially in the toilets, the food was lovely. The staff were lovely and courteous which was nice

We booked for 7.0pm, the restaurant was full, there was one poor trainee waitress who had no hope of coping. The takeaway was mega busy and being served at the expense of the restaurant. We were the third table to get up and leave due to being served no food. Absolutely appalling!

Visited Choi's for the first time on Sunday 6 July. Agree decor is a bit dark and old fashioned so could do with brightening up. The welcome was warm though and the lady who served us was very polite, friendly and efficient. Service was good. The food was excellent. Definitely recommend the scallops and beef rendang and the coconut rice was amazing. We would certainly return.

We have been regular Take Away customers of Choi's for nearly 5 years and have noticed a huge decline in the quality of their food and service over the last few months. The first couple of times, we put it down to them being busy or short staffed, but tonight we ordered food that was barely edible. The rice was cold, the Chow Mein tasted of burnt oil, the Chilli Beef was soggy, gloopy and obviously badly reheated. The Prawn Crackers were stale and chewy. We rang to discuss the problem, but the manager was obnoxious. She very rudely suggested that if we wanted hot food, we should eat in, instead of ordering takeaway. We only live 30 seconds from the restaurant! She went into a rant about how the food is prepared, successfully losing our custom and the chance of us ever recommending them to anybody again. Thankfully there are two other Chinese takeaways in Uppingham and we shall be happy to give them our business in future.

Decided to visit Chois on Chinese new year on Friday evening. Phoned in advance and booked a table for 6.15. When we arrived there was a delay as the waiting area was full of people waiting to order or collect take-aways. Eventually shown to a table and long wait until someone brought menus and took our drinks order. We were the first diners to arrive. Table was near door and we were freezing so we asked to move when our drinks arrived. We were moved next to a radiator, however, it was not on!. Young waiter put on air conditioning unit near corridor to toilets. We remained cold for our meal. Only 2 tables taken by then (5 customers in total)yet 20 minutes to take order. Starter arrived after long wait. Food average. When table was cleared there was another long delay yet still no more customers in restaurant. Different waiter came to table. Asked if we had had our starter. Then asked if we had had our duck course with pancakes. When we said no there was a discussion with another female waitress. Delay again until the duck arived. Not very generous portions...6 pancakes for 3 people. Table cleared by different waitress and even though our glasses were empty we were not asked if we wanted any more drinks. Couple with 10 year old girl arrived at next table and another table filled by couple. 4 tables taken and take-away traffic had reduced. The table next door ordered a main course. After serving out their dishes they requested more rice. After a lengthy delay the young male waiter came and placed the bowl of rice on our table even though we were still waiting for our mains. 4 minutes later after further discussion between waiters they removed rice from our table and put it on the correct table. Main courses arrived and again average in quality. Again waitress did not ask if we wanted drinks and our glasses were still empty. There were now about 6 tables taken with 15 customers total. The menu choice of my wife and son included a 'free' coffee or tea. No one came to enquire if we wanted a dessert or a drink or our tea and coffee. By this time a large group from a 'diners group' were seated in the main part of the restaurant, approximately 30 diners all elderly males. When the time got to 9 o'clock we decided enough was enough. We went to the till and asked to pay the bill. Again long delay (5 minutes) until lady (owner?) came to deal with us. We complained about the service and the lack of tea/coffee or offer of dessert. The lady said that they were busy with the large party that had arived (only arrived about 8.20 pm). The nearest table of the 'diners group' were fairly audible and were complaining about the long delay in getting their starters. They tried to order more drinks to compensate but then faced difficulty attracting the attention of a waiter to get these. We were wrongly charged for an extra bottle of beer and the lady complained that we should have told her. Yet she took the order fom their own sheet. She then took an age to prepare another bill. By this time the large party were complaining about the delay in their food. At this point their starter arrived. My wife again complained tha we had been in the restaurant 3 hours and were still waiting. We paid the bill and the lady tried to present my wife with some money off vouchers for our next visit but in light of the appallingly slow and poor service we refused to take them. A couple in their twenties sat by the entrance had decided like us that the delays were not acceptable and they asked to settle their bill and leave after the duck and pancake course rather than wait for their main course. When my wife explained that it was the worst service we had ever encountered the lady explained that 'it was the chinese new year' The restaurant was still not full and even though it was a cold january evening the radiators were still not on. So much for a warm welcome. The 4 waiters and waitresses were terrible and there was no co-ordination or system in place so different ones dealt with us at different times but did not follow the service through. One waiter did not know what the other had just done on our table. They did not bother to offer us drinks, We would have had more drinks and hence they did themselves out of custom and money! The bill for the 3 of use came to £65 for the 3 courses and the food was average. Needless to say we will not be travelling to Uppingham anytime soon. We will try the ones in Stamford next time. Our visit was disappointing as we have had some very good evenings celebrating Chinese new year there for over 10 years, when the atmosphere and welcome were great and there was music and dragon dancing for entertainment.

We have been struggling to find a good Chinese in Northampton since our favourite changed hands and then we remembered Choi's in Uppingham. My wife used to live in the town and we had many meals here in the past. Would it still be as good? Yes it was. Best Chinese food we have had for quite a while. It is a bit of a drive from Northampton but we will be back. Food was tasty and freshly prepared and the service was friendly. Recommended.

We had a set meal Sunday evening. Although the service was good, the food was of a poor standard. The dishes were lacking the usual variety of vegetables that come with a chinese meal. 2 of the 3 main meat dishes were overly sweet - tasting mainly of Golden Syrup.....Although the price was reasonable, we will not be returning in a hurry!
