The prawn toast was very thick, the soup was also thick. The spring rolls were ok as was the duck. The egg fried rice was dreadful, almost tasteless and only a few shreds of egg. I should have checked the other reviews. We will not be back

NB: this review is for delivery as the restaurant is closed due to Covid-19 and only doing delivery and takeaway orders. When other businesses are bending over backwards to keep repeat business, one wonders what China Garden is thinking with it's customer service strategy (or lack of). I was trying to place an online order recently as I'd received a menu when ordered previously through JustEat. The menu said free delivery over £15 and 10% when ordering online. We were a little bit reluctant after the previous order had a pork dish in it which tastes a bit off to hubby (I didn't try it) but he thought it might have been the way it was supposed to taste but the other dishes were nice enough, so we thought why not?. So I've chosen my items, put the 10% discount code in and about to submit order when it says I need to pay £1 delivery fee. Now bear in mind I've just selected items for over £50 and the menu says free delivery over £15, I thought I'd call the restaurant directly to check why they were trying to charge for delivery. Now I know it was only a £1 but I always tip the delivery guy anyway so to be told I'd have to pay £1 for delivery when the menu said it's free and I'm literally 2 minutes on a bike for delivery they told me on the phone that because of Covid situation they have to charge for delivery. I said their menu didn't say that which I only received a week or two ago from them in my previous order (where we had spent a similar amount of £50). They said the menu was old and no printing going on now so they're just giving out the old menus. I thought this was really cheeky, the guy then said I could place the order over the phone but wouldn't get the 10% discount and would still have to pay a delivery charge. I thought this was really cheeky so I said no thanks and proceeded to order from another local restaurant who were happy to take my order over the phone, did NOT charge for delivery and were really friendly and welcoming when I called to place the order. The other restaurant will be getting our orders going forward, I'll be reviewing them separately and they're getting 5 stars as the food was great and the service was fabulous!

I ordered a take away and the food was watery, cold and undercooked. Not nice at all. Too salty. Really bad!

A big menu flyer came through the door offering 10% discount with an online order. We thought we'd give it a try. The online ordering system was ok but, despite stating the discount, did not take the 10% off. So I rang them, placed the order with them and was given the famous discount. Hurrah! The food was delivered promptly by a cheery chappie. Now, the food. Hot and sour soups were not particularly hot or sour but after adding chilli, soy sauce and vinegar they were quite good. Seaweed, although reasonably priced was very small so not that reasonable Spicy pork was not in the least spicy, a bit sweet actually, but plenty of pork. Ditto hot and spicy wings. (nice and crunchy though). And ditto spicy Szechuan tofu. All in all not spectacular and a tad overpriced. Spare ribs were chopped up and seemed a bit measly.

I ordered with Just Eat and delivery was super fast, so happy with that but the food quality was disappointing. Prawn Spring Rolls were a joke - 3 pieces the size of a little finger and you'd struggle to find the prawn filling amongst all the onion and other vegetarian filling. I'd call it an onion spring roll but hey, the price was unacceptable for what you actually got. Wonton Soup (see pic) was ok but the broth very peppery, though the actual wontons were lovely. I added soya sauce to my soup - just a little - in the hope to make the salty flavour over power the pepper but it didn't work. Egg Fried Rice (see pic) was pretty bad, I mean who fries this up with soya sauce already added? As you can see it looks dry and it was, but not totally inedible. It's supposed to take on the flavour of the dish you add it to, so soya sauce shouldn't be added during cooking. It made the egg flavour vanish altogether. Duck with Pineapple (see pic) was disappointing - rubbery overcooked meat in a sweet & sour sauce which I would never have ordered if I knew this is what it was. On the menu was Duck in Sweet & Sour sauce but also my chosen dish of Duck with Pineapple never mentioned sweet & sour sauce. I'm not a fan, they should explain both dishes are the same even though they are listed as separate dishes. Cantonese Beef (see pic) was not something I'd get again - rubbery beef, vegetables that were so overcooked they were limp, flat and flavourless with a sauce that was almost Cantonese style but not quite. I've had outstanding Cantonese Beef in Hong Kong several times and also at a restaurant in London Chinatown - very authentic but this version was definitely not.

After being open 30 years - and having visited it numerous times, New Leaf has now closed. It's a real shame as it was a great restaurant with delicious dumplings (and real value for money).

The best Singapore noodles outside of Chinatown, and great fat vegetable pancake roll, backed up with thick slices of roast pork char Sui on a bed of cabbage. Very good portions and ready for the take away in 10 minutes.
