Childwall Abbey Hotel in Liverpool

Food is wonderful, always my choice for a pub meal, however I always find the service lacklustre. We are never asked if our food is ok, communication is at a very basic level in terms of service, sometimes no verbal communication. Work really needs to be done on improving this as the pub is lovely, but the atmosphere is poor due to lack of interaction. Each time we hope it will be better and it never is. The food on this visit was absolutely spot on, piping hot and very tasty. Please work on service. We used blue light card for this visit, bill was £30 plus 20%. We are just leaving with no further interaction with staff since our food arrived.

On arrival, after booking a table online, we entered the bar and there was nobody behind it and nobody to advise where we could sit. It took me some time to find someone who said we could sit anywhere. We found a table and ordered at the bar after choosing from the menu. Surprisingly the choice of accompaniments was greater at the bar than it had appeared from the menu (eg could have baked potato with the steak). We then sat to await arrival but became cold and had to move tables twice as the heating seemed very low (others were wearing padded jackets while eating so was a general problem). When it arrived the food was excellent - steaks cooked perfectly and very tasty. The starter of chicken wings was also excellent. Overall the food was delicious and the value for money also very good. It is a shame that the low temperature and lack of someone to greet on arrival let the food down and will certanly put others off.

Booked the Abbey for the wake after mum's funeral. The service and buffet were excellent. Would highly recommend.

Lovely atmosphere, brilliant staff, fairly priced food and drink (wide selection of drinks) and good quality for the price, has separate dog area with water and dog treats available behind the bar, picturesque scenery. Large beer garden with kids park near on site. Old building full of character.

Nice pub, great location. Hotel rooms are good and clean. Food is hit and miss. Average pub food. Drinks prices are very reasonable! Worth a visit, the atmosphere is always good. And frequent stuff going on to make it more interesting. Although it could do with a good clean and refresh in the bar areas, it's a pleasant plans for a few drinks.

Had a fabulous stay at Childwall Abbey. Very comfortable, and the staff were lovely. Nice bar too, which serves the local village. If you’re in the Liverpool area looking for Beatles connections, it was the venue for a very early Quarrymen era gig and the photo setting is intact. Even if you’re not…highly recommended. It's a nice pub, got a really nice atmosphere. Never seems to have enough bar staff on so you end up waiting forever to get served.

First time at the Abbey, had a bueatiful roast dinner. Beef great value. Would be more than happy to go back anytime.

Fabulous little find, Paul was really accommodating with my meal, off menu, due to food allergies and chosen meal not available. Very simple, but oh, so, Very tasty, thank you. All our other meal also very gratefully received. Definitely will be back!

Love this pub! Dave and Sarah are amazing hosts, nothing is too much trouble. The Sunday roast is wonderful, I'm happy as they cater for vegans.

The food was nice and hot and scrumptious with large portions, the staff were very considerate and friendly and they gave our dog some treats. Great overall experience 🩷

I had a fantastic visit to the Childwall Abbey Hotel and bar. Peter the manager was very engaging and knowledgable regarding the history. Very nice atmosphere and staff including Odessa was extremely friendly and polite.

The staff are fantastic very warm welcome and food was excellant ! I will be definately return with my friends. Peter the manager was personable and appraochable very nice person. I like the old traditional village pub and had a great feel about it.

I visited the childwall abbey and had a great time , both staff and customers were extremely friendly and lovely to chat with. Bonus points to odessa for going above and beyond and being a fantastic addition to my visit.

We didn't have high expectations about the food after our last visit and well, again it was pretty terrible. The staff are amazing though, really nice, chatty and attentive.

Booked a table for 7 about a month ago. Had heard this pub had recently changed hands but didn't expect the food to be so poor. We had traditional xmas menu. Everything was cold. Sent back to reheat but as this could have caused illness we should have in hindsight, refused to pay. Poor waiter did his best. Whoever they had on chef duty was not going the job properly. Doubt very much it was a proper chef. Even the puddings (xmas pud, sticky toffee pud) were cold.

We waited over one hour for just two meals ordered. We asked waiter for the reason for the holdup and he said "The chef got six tickets at once." When the food did finally arrived the steak we ordered tasted off. I've never took any food back in years but tonight I had to. Won't be going back for food again. We was given a refund but I'd rather have eaten.

A booking of 18, handled superbly. Some food items weren't available but no problem with that being so close to Christmas. All the staff were great too.

Kids enjoyed breakfast with Santa but a lot of the staff were disorganised, forgot what people were having for breakfast and had to ask them again. Staff had an attitude like we were an inconvenience. The cooked breakfast was bit rubbish too really, rubbery scrambled eggs and fatty bacon. At the end our table was left with dirty plates on for about 45 minutes after we'd finished breakfast.

The staff we dealt with were absolutely brilliant. Very friendly and patient, even when we had them rushed off their feet with our order! Food is great too and decent sized portions. Only slight issue is with the app for placing orders - omits some items which are on the menu and can be difficult to edit - but this definitely wouldn't stop me going to the Childwall Abbey Hotel pub again. Lovely lovely place.

Great food and drinks Location is about 20 mins from Liverpool Centre and taxis/Ubers were quite pricey but having said that, I would stay here again without any doubt. Rooms were clean and comfy - especially the bed Staff were friendly, accommodating and were very helpful.

Will be using this regularly when I visit family in Liverpool.

Hy husband and I had lunch there today, it was brought within 10 - 15 mins 😊The vegetable curry with rice and crackers was tasty, it was just a very small portion (the 'crackers' were tiny too.) Thankfully, hubby's chicken burger with gravy was huge so he shared his chips ! I know what I'm having next time!! 😊

We had a celebration of life held here two weeks ago in the function room. Staff are friendly and helpful, nothing was too much trouble. I would reccomend the Childwall Abbey Hotel for similar occasions to anyone who is looking for a warm and welcoming place.

The band on Tuesday and Thursday is driving customers away . After playing for 5 minutes everyone left or retreated to back rooms because they are far too loud.Once a week is just about acceptable.

Local pub, but sadly, the food has really gone down in standard. The presentation of food is somewhat thrown on the plate, cold, and it never arrives with what it advertises. It is very disappointing as this is a beautiful pub in a lovely village. Please address the food service Childwall Abbey!

Really lovely place, great staff and the roast was amazing, like actually amazing not small or stingy was full plate and tasted so amazing!!

We had a lovely evening with friends. The food was presented quickly and as we'd asked. We enjoyed doing the Christmas Quiz during the evening.

Ellie was very polite and helpful when taking the order. She advised us on food which wasn't available. The food we received was very tasty, good value for money and will definitely revisit.to try the food that wasn't available.

Excellent 16 went 4 were children, and 11 adults had Sunday lunch . adult had fish and chips . Wow, food was an amazing best Sunday lunch 😋 😍 service brilliant and a lovely, friendly pub . will definitely be back....The green family x

Gorgeous little pub, friendly staff, we had ordered food and were informed there may be a delay due to a table of 20 being in. We didn't wait too long though. The roast dinner was nice everything was hot, turkey was good the veg was cooked well, all in all a nice roast. Will come again.

Let me start by saying,if you go there be advised it's a blue pub.i went in with my Liverpool top on and got ripped to pieces,but in a really fun way,they're a great bunch of lads in there and they have a variety of cask ales and beers. The staff are friendly and helpful, and if you want to try something different beer wise,they'll give you a sample to try. I haven't eaten there yet but the food looks appetising,tasty,and smells good. If you like hollyoaks, you maybe surprised to see some of the cast who frequent the pub as the studio is only a short walk from there,give it a try you won't be Disappointed.

Nice place. Easy to order. Food came out pretty quickly. Only downside was tartare sauce was missing from the fish and chips and a delay on a dessert. I'll definitely be going again.

I came Childwall abbey for overnight stay and believe me the room was lovely the staff are amazing and tend too your every need, also food is exceptional

I visited on Sunday 26th May 2019 With my wife & 2 sons! I ordered a Gin & Lemonade, this is were it went downhill!! There was no straws, no fruit!!! We then ordered a burger & 3 Chicken Tikka Masalas! We were then told that they didn’t have any rice!!! We re-ordered 2 roast dinners & 1 Tikka Masala with Chips! When the roast dinners arrived we couldn’t believe our eyes! The roast potatoes were actual Aunt Bessie’s frozen potatoes!! The vegetables were cold!! We now are going to find another place to socialise! The standards in the Childwall Abbey have gone down significantly!! I hope you read this and take on board your shortcomings or you are going to lose more custom!!!

We attended for a family funeral. The staff were super helpful and friendly. Buffet was provide and a great selection was available. Would recommend for a function or get together.

To cut it short, miserable staff, ordered 17 meals they come out at different times over an hour and a half, food was cold, missing toppings some on dishes onion rings etc. wouldn't eat here again.

Visited Sunday 29th September, and had a brilliant time. Great food and great atmosphere. First visit and it won't be our last

I held my mothers after funeral get together at the Abbey Hotel and Pub, the staff were excellent, really lovely, understanding and respectful, the facilities perfect and the food very good quality and well presented. It’s a great venue, the environment is excellent and the service exceptional.

With a drive to and from London I wanted a place with character and Childwall certainly fulfilled. Gothic windows and smashed avo in Liverpool v welcome

Stayed here with family as my sons wedding was at the Palm House Sefton park, Childwell Abby Hotel is a lovely pub and accommodation, rooms were bigger than expected, beds are huge, sleeps 3 if thats your thing, only downside in my daughters family room was noise from the water pipes in another room, it sounded as if someone was going down a waterslide but not a big issue, breakfast was extra, but very nice and loads of it, staff lovely, manager couldn't do enough for you, free parking over the road, would definitely stay again if in the area again

Good venue to enjoy nice afternoon with friends.Caberet is good , adds to the atmosphere unfortunately the same can’t be said of the food. On more than one occasion the food has been below standard , it spoils what could have been a great afternoon

I used to live in Liverpool but am now "down south". I love to come back when I can and visit a few days a year now, usually connected to LFC games. I stay with a friend and we always visit the Childwall Abbey pub for a couple of drinks. It's got great atmosphere and very good service. Keep up the good work.

One of the loveliest little venues I have had the pleasure of visiting. The staff were very friendly and extremely helpful when it came to allergen advice for my son. The outdoor space was a hit with the children and overall as a family we enjoyed it and will be returning again soon

Haven't been for year's but all the bad reviews has put us off

Not great. 45 minute wait, which we weren't told about. Not given a child's menu. We had to go and ask at the bar. We had booked a table but we were seated in a kennel. I don't mind dogs in the pub, but we were surrounded by 5, two of which were huge. One little one yapped continuously. I presume there is an area specific for patrons with dogs but we weren't asked if it was OK to sit there. We normally go to the black bull in gatacre and we are always asked if we are ok to sit with animals whilst we eat. The food wasn't great. House salad should have had quinoa and beans in but it was leaves, tomato and cucumber. Childs chicken was overcooked and the chips were lukewarm. 2 stars because staff are hardworking and pleasant

Arrived at 18:15 have pre book table for 18:30. On arrival was not shown to our table instead had to go the bar and was told to just sit anywhere. Did not appeared to be busy so found a nice spot. When going up to order food was warned there was a 40 min wait on food. Decided that was fine and we just get a bar snack while we wait. Main dont come for a hour and food was nothing special for the price. coming up to the two hour mark we decided to leave and get a refund on desserts. I was the 4th table that walked out that day

Very nice-looking pub with a great history. The staff were polite and friendly, and they have a good selection of food at reasonable prices. However, I was disappointed with the wait for food during my visit. It took over 40 minutes to arrive, I'm not sure why, no explanation was offered and it wasn't particularly busy (as far as I could see, we were the only customers eating). Other than that, it was a nice afternoon out."
