Chennai Dosa in Manchester

I was taken with friends for a birthday treat and chose it above going into Manchester to one of the top restaurants there. The place is quite basic inside, more like a cafe, which is fine and I had been warned it was not 'posh'. It is obviously popular as for a Monday was getting quite busy, mostly with local Asian males which suggests the food must be authentic and enjoyed. In truth, the food I had could have been better. Not much dosa filling whatsoever and not as tasty as my South Indian mum made! We ordered different meals but all decided to share a jug of mango lassi. It was thick, sweet and - room temperature. Room temperature is not nice. It should have been better and certainly chilled or blended with some crushed ice. The glasses for the lassi and water glasses were ALL grubby, with one even arriving with a puddle of dishwater included - how can anyone think this is OK? I did not wish to kick up a fuss as I was being taken out by friends, so just wiped my glass best I could with a napkin and used the straw but found it off-putting as I would never drink out of a glass like that in my home. The cutlery was also not properly washed. The service was OK, although we had to ask for it rather than anyone keeping an eye on the tables as they were busy bringing food out so felt we were interrupting them. A starter I had looked like it had the exact same sauce (gravy) as a different one my friend ordered. Despite a few dessert choices on the menu, only after placing our order were we advised most of the choices were not available... why not say so at the start?? We decided to forgo the dessert but sat waiting for a good 15 minutes to catch the eye of serving staff, to order a coffee. In the end we just paid and left. I was not that impressed with anything to be honest, including the dosa which I found was not nice and crispy, which it should be, but soft and wilted from the time it was placed in front of me - with a couple of spoons of filling, so that most of the time you were eating empty dosa, with the chutneys to add some flavour! Plenty of room for improvement here and I can imagine the main reason for its popularity is the prices are reasonable, it is a casual, non pretentious place to pop into and there are few South Indian eateries around.

This is a fairly basic family restaurant serving delicious south Indian food. Attentive service. Lovely atmosphere. Great value.

Worst place to order food from( chennai Dosa, Northenden, never will I order or dine in there. I went there to order food for dinner. Service: The person on the till is least bothered about who came in, he was busy on his phone and then comes a waitress who took the order and asked me to wait for 20 mins. However I got my order after 30 mins. The place was not crowded as well for the delay. They are least bothered. Food: The food was not hot enough to Consume, fish was stale and was reheated and packed. Dosas were packed in a foul which was torn in multiple places and the coconut chutney was the down sider of all. The starters were all soggy and non edible. The only thing that was good was the vada. Overall not worth for the 40£ that I spent. Sorry but this is my honest review as I was really expecting more from you having tried all the Indian restaurants around Altrincham and sale.

Beautiful tasting food. But unbelievably small portion for a delivery and for the price. Spent £25 and had to serve very sparingly.

This was me second visit, the first one was ok. Yesterday I took another family to have lunch there with us. The place was too hot to begin with, the food was awful. All the curry’s were full of bones and no meat. The buffet kept Going empty and we had to wait 10-15 for food to be replaced. I had to order my drink 4 times to receive it and in the end we order ice cream 4 times and never received. I will never go again and strongly recommend that people avoid.

I can honestly say that this food is wonderful Perfect dosas and the chicken gravy (curry) was a dream Will Def go back It will become a regular Starters are top too

We have been regular at this restaurant for the last few years and never had issues when a lovely couple was running the place . The last few visits have been questionable . The chef blast his regional music in the kitchen and deliberately delays service . You order and the food arrives staggered after an hour . The main will arrive and the flat bread to eat it with will arrive 30 mins later after several follow ups . Some items on the lunch meal are cold when served , faces are made when it’s asked to be served hot . The English server girls are extremely lovely but the Asian ones seems to have big attitudes and are very dismissive to your concerns as a paying customer . The English server girl Toni ( bless her for her patience ) was left to do everything for the tables . Clear tables , take new orders , take phone orders , dispatch the take away orders , bring water , food etc while the Asian ones just chatted away in the kitchen with the chef ( who’s door is always open and the ongoing are in clear sight) The food is good but unfortunately the service is not the same . Tremendous lack of respect to the customers , poor service and bad attitude.

The kitchen took one hour to do my take away food only a few dishes,,in the restaurant was 2 tables only,so disappointed

Let me start with saying that we had a very good experience last Sunday in this place. I am a person from S. India and i know the flavor profile of South indian food especially. Lets talk about what was good here. The very best part of this restaurant which i thoroughly enjoyed was the food was served piping hot. This was amazing. Made the food even more tastier. Our fav food here was Sambar vada and Masala dosa. Simple dishes yet cooked very tastefully. Service by the ladies were very good. Thank you for that. If I would want to point one area of improvement was the food initial order took a little bit more time and we waited for a good 20 mins before the appetiser was served. But when it came, both the appetizer and the entree came together which may not be very ideal for everyone. however, it was worth the wait as the food was served hot and delicious. Kudos to the kitchen staff, serving staff. All well done. Please keep the flavor profile close to authentic Indian food and not changing it to local pallette. This is what keeps you unique about you compared to other restaurants. I promise i will keep back, if you maintain these 2 things, a) serving hot food, b) keeping the flavour profile not changed to local pallette and c ) great staff serving food. I am a tough reviewer and I have given 4 stars which is very rate. But you earned it.

Stunning food and the service was excellent. Highly recommend this restaurant. This is not your run of the mill Indian. This is Southern Indian food which means you can get a very different food experience. Loved it.

What a relief. After the astonishing decline and demise of Chennai Dosa Stretford, an entirely new franchise has opened up in Northenden. This is a good, solid, south indian café - bhatura, idli, wada and tea all trialled and approved. Nice, friendly staff too.
