What a fantastic quaint B&B. The room was comfortable, warm, and had everything we needed. Cups etc were replenished and milk and water was available in a fridge. The owners were lovely very friendly and extremely helpful in organising taxis, food and catering to our every need- including early check in, allergies etc. We really appreciated it. Would definitely stay in this quirky, friendly place again.

My wife and I were on honeymoon and had visited Oxburgh Hall, and it was too late to drive home. On the spur of the moment we decided to stay one night B & B and chose Chalk and Cheese. When we arrived Andrew was most helpful and offered us the room with a four poster bed. He also made available to us some freebie toiletries as we had come out unprepared for a stopover. The room and the bed were fantastic and so comfortable. His dog Lottie was lovely and really took to me. The house was just my cup of tea, with many antiquities and decorative attractions. The Shower was excellent. There was an amazing attention to detail. The breakfast was terrific. If I could give a 6 bullet rating I would! Thank you Andrew.

My friend and I stayed here just the one night whilst taking part in a tour of East Anglia cycle ride. Andrew and Bridget were very accommodating by putting our bikes away as well as allowing my wife (support driver) to join us for breakfast. The room was cozy, comfortable and clean. The bathroom was well equipped and did all that a bathroom should. Breakfast was delicious as we were waited on by Bridget. I would loved to have stayed longer, I sense a return visit. Lovely people, great value and a wonderful location. Also, you just eat at the local, it's really very nice.

Stayed here for just one night when attending a wedding at red barn but could have stayed longer. Andrew and Bridget the proprietors where very friendly and helpfull! Booked our taxis, made us a lovely pot of tea on arrival to enjoy in front of a roaring fire with the days newspapers! If you want to escape the rat race in amazing surroundings ....spend a night or two here. The aladins cave of curious will keep you occupied for hours with books ornaments and all kinds of unusual thing from all over the world. There is also an antique shop to brows. I bought a few bargains here 😊. The four poster bed was amazingly comfortable and the breakfast first class, with lots of choice including fresh berrys and a delicious cooked breakfast. Will be returning next time i need to escape for a night. Thank you Andrew and Bridget for a wonderfull stay.

My wife and I stopped here the night of a friend's wedding reception at the pub across the road. As soon as we walked up to the building (an amazing exterior in itself!), we were greeted by the owners and some locals doing a bit of DIY outside. Everyone was so friendly and happy to chat to us! The interior of the building is unexplainable, you have to see it to believe it! Quirky and eclectic just doesn't do it justice, wow! We were shown to our room which was again amazing and just what we needed for a quick afternoon nap to sleep off the hangover! The owners were so helpful and helped us out with anything and everything! To top it off we awoke from our nap to find one of the dogs sleeping outside our room which just made everything even more homely (we have 2 dogs ourselves). The dogs are really friendly and love a good scratch! Off we went to the reception across the green, returning early the next morning it was a treat to return to such a lovely room with a gorgeous bed!! The next morning obviously feeling a bit fragile we ventured downstairs for some breakfast. There wasn't really a menu, the chef/owner basically just said he could Cook whatever we wanted! This was the perfect way to start the recovery from the night before and the breakfast was gorgeous! After getting our bags together we had a wander around the antiques shop next door which was an absolute treasure trove in itself! An incredible place with friendly and welcoming staff. Our only regret was that we couldn't stay longer. Will definitely return!

We took our Daughter, her Partner and Baby for Sunday Lunch. This was their first time at Chalk and Cheese and they were so impressed with the informality of the reception room and Bar. The Restaurant is a mix and match of furnishings and crockery. But this is all part of the charm of Chalk and Cheese. Sunday Lunch was excellent and extra portions of meat and vegetables were offered without us asking. This was not the first visit by my wife and I and it certainly won't be our last. Our thanks to the owners and staff for making this a memorable occasion. John & Anne@ Burrettfield

It's a really interesting place but I've just done Christmas lunch here at the suggestion of a friend and the bill for seven adults came to over £500 - that's more than £73 each for just the basic set menu. It wasn't even as though we'd even added lots of drinks to the bill. Put in context that's more than I spend on food and drink at home in a fortnight and quite honestly it wasn't worth it! That experience was enough to put me off ever going back there.

We Visited on a very warm summers evening and therefore were able to appreciate the setting in which this very well kept secret is located. We were one of the first dining guests to arrive (they are also a bed and breakfast) and were greeted at the door by a very lovely lady and two very lovely, friendly dogs (the dogs were put away almost immediately after our arrival) We were taken through and seated at a snug table by the bar and served our drinks while looking at the menu, the service was quick and once we had ordered our food we were offered nibbles to keep us going, which were very nice indeed! After about a 10 minute wait the waitress came and asked us to follow her to our table which was in the beautiful conservatory, almost immediately after sitting down we were served fresh bread and very shortly after, our pizzas arrived. The pizzas were absolutely delicious! I had the Hawaiian which had proper, thick ham (almost gammon) and nice big chunks of pineapple on. My partner had the peri chicken which he said was perfect, the chicken was cooked well and it wasn't too spicy. Dessert was also very nice. Couldn't fault the meal at all and will definitely be returning.

I heard about this little place through the grape vine. Being told that it is a lovely place and very quirky. The kind of thing I would be interested in and told that it had great food. My visit... Was... Different...We arrived at about 7:30 after having booked a table. There wasn't much parking available so we parked away from the venue only to be greeted by a man in the car park. Who greeted us inside. We said we had booked a table for the evening to which he seemed very pleased and sat us down in the very lovely and well decorated bar area. It was a fabulous place to look at roaring fires and very warm and welcoming. They had their dogs running around the bar area which wasn't an issue for us as we are both dog people and we weren't in the restaurant... Yet. The menu was sparse mainly consisting of pizza as their speciality. We ordered and were then given nibbles while we waitedWe then were taken through to the restaurant which was basically like a conservatory in a house with a few set tables it was really lovely. Our starter came out and was presented very nicely and tasted delicious. We thought we were on to a winner. However, after the starter it sort of went downhill from there. Unfortunately the dog kept coming in to the restaurant area where we and others were eating. This is highly unhygienic and really put me off. Our mains came out and my partner had ordered a steak cooked M/R and I, one of the pizzas with a side order of chips. The steak was very thin and not Cooked to what we had asked. It was a greyish colour and had no flavour. It just looked like the frying steak you get in supermarkets. Not what was advertised on the menu. The chef then came to our table and rudely interrupted asking who had the steak? To which my partner nodded. The chef said "that's a great bit of steak that, best you'll find". And then left. To top this off the dog had been in and out numerous times and my chips tasted like they had been cooked in very old oil. The dog then ran into the kitchen and that just did it for me. Safe to say I probably won't return after my experience. However, the decor is phenomenal and a really fantastic building and the people are very friendly. Unfortunately the food was atrocious and it really let it down.

I went in and saw such an array of sights/objects, was welcomed by the owners, and shown a table - I knew this place had a way of its own of working so sat back and relaxed. Some friends introduced us to the Chalk and Cheese yesterday for lunch. It is one of the most interesting restaurants I have ever been to and can't wait to go back and stay at the B & B which looks great. It is very difficult to describe this old school house as it is so different and interesting. We weren't expected so the owner Andrew 'cobbled' together a menu for us while we played with Lottie their 5 month old puppy. The food was well cooked, chips delicious and they have a good selection of wine. Lovely atmosphere which I should think is even better in the evening with the fire on. Don't go if you're a fan of bland modern restaurants, in fact don't go at all - leave it for us!

Looked on trip advisor before we went and at their website (detailed menus and prices are not available on their website) we had no idea of cost or if it would have child friendly meals so we're a little apprehensive. When we got there the setup is really querky and pleasant, when we looked at the menu as stated on here before it was small, and I did not realise it was a set meal, so starter and main or main and desert for £18.95. You could have all three but cannot remember how much that was. Definitely not child friendly unless your child likes thin crust basic hand made pizza. I had soup and margarita pizza which I think is the most expensive I have had and certainly very average, infact our child did not eat. Very disappointed, overpriced and would not return.

I took my partner here for his 30th birthday to stay and to have a meal in the evening. We were greeted warmly and shown to our room which was spacious, clean and decorated to a lovely high standard. There had been a mix up with the rooms but we were very happy with the one we were given instead and the owner was most apologetic, not that it was necessary. It was a really hot day and we enjoyed some drinks in the garden and were joined by 2 lovely cats. As for our meal, I had forewarned the Chalk and Cheese that it was a birthday treat for my partner and they kindly provided table decorations and a waffle adorned with chocolate, sprinkles and a candle for his dessert. The food was good, home cooked and tasty. If you're looking for fine dining, this isn't the place, but we really enjoyed our selections. There is also a good choice of beer, wine and spirits. The stand-out features for us though were the wonderful, welcoming and friendly staff who couldn't do enough for us, and the truly delightful decor. I think a previous reviewer mentioned Hogwarts, the eclectic mix of knick-knacks and a beautiful old building made our stay all the more unique and enjoyable. If modern, minimalistic surroundings and fine dining is what you're looking for, this isn't for you, but if you want a unique, relaxed and fun experience, with lovely food, warm hosts and a great pint, all for a reasonable price, I couldn't recommend this place enough, we hope to be back in the future. Oh! and the brekkie was fab too.

We had friends visiting and so we decided to try Sunday lunch at the Chalk & Cheese. What a lovely surprise we had - and that was just when we walked through the door and saw what an eccentric, but relaxing, place it is! We all had a drink first in the bar. We then went through to lunch in the Orangery - such an airy, appealing room, even with the current spell of warm weather. The food was just perfect - the men both had roast pork (with scrummy crackling on the side) and us girls had roast chicken with generous helpings of perfectly cooked veg. We all then had puds which were equally enjoyable, although we nearly needed a lie down on a settee afterwards! All in all, it was an unexpected surprise to find somewhere with such a lovely atmosphere and delicious food, together with friendly but efficient service. Thanks for a wonderful Sunday lunch. We just need to think of another excuse to visit - soon!

It is very rare to find somewhere with real character, but this is one. The place is full of eclectic curios, but it doesn't feel in the slightest bit contrived - so many pubs and restaurants look as though someone's been sent out to buy a ton of crap to nail to the walls to give the place 'character'.We'd heard good things about the pizzas here, so decided to order a couple. After some freshly baked bread and olives and a drink in the bar (the Warsteiner was lovely, the Bitburger a bit watery) the very friendly owner took us via the kitchen (to see our pizzas being baked in the wood-fired stone oven) to the restaurant in a conservatory. When the pizzas arrived they were huge and very tasty. I'll definitely be back to sample some of the other delicious-looking dishes on the menu.

First, I have to declare an interest...Andrew has been a person of note in the real ale world locally to me for some years, first opening a bar at Downham Market Railway Station some years ago to much local acclaim and a mention in the CAMRA guide in recent years. Then selling up to start this venture.I only went along in the past few months, for the ale in particular; Andrew knows his real ale and his cellar is clearly well kept with good local ale on offer... 10/10 for this as usual. Now the food...Pizza; very nice, however a little pricey and the range is limited. The remainder of the menu appears good on paper, and certainly other diners meals looked well prepared and something I would consider eating..The accommodation looks of a high standard, and where I would consider staying if I didn't live locally.I will certainly continue to use this venue, but not eat at on a regular basis.Unrelated, the village of Shouldham is a delightful setting and within walking distance, Forestry Commission land in the form of Shouldham Warren is worth a wander around.

I visited this gastro pub after I went in to the farm shop and spoke to the chap who owned it. When we arrived the place was just delightful. Country chic with a hint of a wacky eccentric edge. Interesting music playing and really enticing surroundings. The food too was lovely and the portions were great. However, the staff where unfriendly and I felt they snubbed me a bit as I did not fit in to the stereotypical group of clientele they were perhaps used to, particularly as we took my two year old son. The women who I am assuming to be the owners wife was very closed and unfriendly. They were also very slow. We wanted to get away quite quickly as my son was restless and I felt a little unwell. I asked to take my pizza away which they accommodated albeit slowly. Although they never brought me the box or said it was ready I just came across it dumped by the exit on my way out. It was made better by the eccentric owner checking if everyone was Ok and the fantastic decor and flamboyant nature of the place. The owner needs to get some new staff on the books though and potentially a new wife? Just a suggestion.

The building (an old school) is delightful and we spent several minutes taking in the quirkiness of the interior and unique atmosphere. The owners are very friendly and helpful and after relaxing with drinks in the main lounge area, we went through to the dining area. I did feel that the table was a little small for all of us, however this is the only nit picking bit of criticism I will be writing! The food was served efficiently by the pleasant waiting staff. The meat (between us we had both the roast options & the steak pie) was excellent quality "proper" meat, cooked well and was served with delicious freshly cooked vegetables. We visited for lunch on a weekday. We arrived just before it opened at 12. The member of staff invited us in and said we could sit and wait in the main lounge area. The building is a converted school and has been tastefully decorated. The interior is delightful and it almost feels like you are sitting in someone's home! It is very quirky and individual with a lovely fireplace. There is also a lovely dining room off the main lounge area. The staff were very welcoming. You can just come for a drink or have food. They advised us to book at weekends or in the evenings but it was quiet during our visit on a snowy day. We had the beef and onion sandwich and a burger for lunch, followed by ginger pudding and custard. The food was lovely and served reasonably quickly given that it was clearly cooked to order. The coffee was also very good - one of the best I have tasted. The bill came to £23 for two meals, one pudding and four drinks which is reasonable given the quality of the food and the lovely setting. If I can find slight fault it would only be that there were no baby changing facilities for our little one. They do have high chairs available for children however. There is also a small shop on site doing a mixture of local and typical cornershop produce. In addition a quaint little antiques shop is attached which is worth a browse.

We visit the Chalk and Cheese regularly and have always been delighted. The atmosphere alone is worth the visit, the range of drinks served is wide and varied, the food is simple, great quality and always a pleasure to eat and hosts Andrew and Bridget are ceaseless in their quest to provide a wonderful experience for all who eat there. The food has an Italian theme, often made with ingredients sourced from one of Andrew's trips to Italy and often combined with excellent quality local produce to create a real experience. The deceptively simple menu choices, such as Meatballs and penne pasta or Sea Bass and sauté potatoes in no way hint at the range of wonderful flavours which accompany every mouthful. Someone wanting a drink to complement their food will always be able to seek an unusual tipple, such as excitingly-named beers from the Cambridgeshire brewery Elgoods, sloe gins, excellent quality wines and of course Scottish whiskeys. Whether we have been as individuals for a quiet coffee with the papers on the sofa by the roaring fire, as a couple for a romantic meal, a family for a post-walk lunch or with friends for a chatty, lively night out, the Chalk and Cheese has always triumphed and should be very proud of the service it provides to the lovely village of Shouldham. Restaurant, bar, village shop, art gallery, historical building and nod to days gone by, the Chalk and Cheese is a truly unique and memorable experience that will stay with you forever.

I hardly had room for the crumble for dessert but it was so lovely I squeezed it in! We vegged out by the fire with a coffee afterwards and it really felt like a home from home. Lovely food, wonderful atmosphere, if you're after a quirky, memorable evening with great food I would highly recommend.

Stopped in shortly after 12:00 today and was turned away due to not having made a booking. The place was empty save for one other group of 4 that had a 1:00 booking. We asked if we might order and were told they don't serve food until 1:00 and we would have to wait until the other party was taken care of. We found this strange as the website states the restraraunt opens at 12:00 and the other party was in the bar having drinks. We asked then if we waited how long they estimated it might be and were told at least 40 min. Very disappointed as we drove quite a distance to eat there after being given a recommendation, no mention that they required a booking. Not sure now if we will go back...

A dog at the bar and a dog in the farm shop! Labradors make for a warm welcome. We went for lunch. We were sat down at the sofas in a living room style room. We got to enjoy our drinks and place our order whilst sat on the sofas. Once the meal was ready we were walked to our table in the conservatory. Food was of a pretty good standard and speaking to the chef he seems passionate about his ingredients, making sure to source the freshest and finest meat and fish. Will definitely come visit on an evening and hope to give one of their pizzas a go.

This place is amazing the decor the atmosphere the quirky touches. it is a pleasure to be in it gives you a kind of warm feeling inside. Problem is you can get carried away with all that and forget why you actually came.......... To Eat.The food is OK its not great, its not gourmet, its not even different or daring its just OK.Grilled Halloumi was served with salad and chilli jam. Halloumi was cut way too thin for my taste and overpowered by the chilli jam, salad was kind of ordinary. Had pasta which was dry, meatballs were bland to the nth degree and any sauce had evaporated by the time it hit the table. All nicely presented and served but lacking in taste unfortunately.Go for the atmosphere and dont expect too much from the food and you will have a good evening.

After reading the reviews about the Chalk and Cheese we decided to try it for a lunch. The website mentioned the pizza oven and the menu was inviting. The restaurant was everything other reviewers had said about it and we started with a drink sitting on sofas and chairs that we sunk into and were so deep that the great number of cushions didn't make us perch on the edge! The food we had was very nice but we were disappointed that they only served the full menu in the evening. I had a tasty quiche but wondered why I was told that 'he had cut the crust off for me'. I happen to think the pastry edge is all part of a quiche so had it been burnt or something similar? However we enjoyed our experience so much we will return for an evening meal and judge it again on this experience.

There's some restaurants you arrive at and just know immediately you're in for a memorable experience that's out of the ordinary. Chalk and Cheese falls full squarely into that category yet is impossible to pigeon hole! Such an apt name for a place! Situated in an old school building in the delightfully picturesque village of Shouldham, this is a place where you simultaneously feel completely at home but somehow on another planet! It's a restaurant come pizza palace come bric a brac shop come museum come library and wherever you look there's interesting 'stuff' that catches the eye. The food is pretty good too! After settling down on a comfortable sofa with a pint of Southwold bitter and a Pinot Grigio we set about perusing a menu that was hardly what we expected but then, to be honest, we really did not know what to expect! A range of pizzas, pastas and other dishes constituted the main courses and 7 or 8 intriguing starters to choose from. I plumped for the pate and pickle intro with the Chalk and Cheese pizza to follow whilst my other half went for the deep fried halumi followed by the chicken. To say that this place oozes character and charm doesn't do it justice...nor does the word eclectic. A simple trip to the gents seems to take forever as I'm bombarded with railway memorabilia, copies of old Giles annuals and a host of other items that propel me back to my childhood. We soon take our seats in what seems like an old conservatory and immediately set about our fare. The starters were grand and the main courses excellent. We shared a chocolate sponge swimming in a rich chocolate sauce to conclude what was a superb evening. Almost three hours spent here and yet a bill that was less than £50!A seemingly ever insecure and friendly chef/owner Andrew Archibald paces around his domain seeking constant reassurance from his customers. He need not worry. I can't imagine anyone leaving here with anything but a warm glow and a full stomach as well as a desire to share the experience with others. Chalk and Cheese just demands to be written about...and so I have!

The building is the old village school house and has been very tastefully converted into a bar, restaurant and bed and breakfast establishment. Some of the outbuldings in the old school playground have been converted into a shop selling local produce. We went for Sunday lunch and set in the orangry/conservatory. Both the food and service were very good. Will certainly return.

We've lived in the area for over 8 years now, and friends of ours suggested this place for a bite to eat.....well what a hidden gem this place turned out to be. The building itself was previously the village school, with stained glass windows and high beamed ceilings. The look and feel of the bar/restaurant is bohemian in feel, but very inviting and homely. The owners are just the perfect hosts, and the food, Italian in style is very good. They have their own pizza oven which, if you ask, you can watch your pizza being being cooked. Booking is definitely a must as this place is popular. We'll definitely be going back, and on a regular basis now we know it's there!

We popped up for a weekend away and booked to stay at the Chalk and Cheese bed and breakfast. We also booked a table in their restaurant for the Saturday evening. On arrival at the Chalk and Cheese we were shown to our room by Andrew who made us feel very welcome. Our room was lovely with a super four poster and Andrew asked if we would like tea in the Lounge. Out came a tray with china cups and saucers, a teapot that did not leak and 2 slices of homemade cake. It was a cold day outside so to sit in their stunning lounge with the wood burner blazing and taking in their eclectic mix of furniture, lights, decor and objet d'art was a nice way to relax after our journey. Four of us dined that evening and we had a super meal, Bridget was a great host and the wine was good, a house Merlot and Andrew had cooked some of the best chicken I had ever had in a restaurant. Breakfast was a delight and we left vowing to return in June. Two very minor niggles were the initial contact emails were not that welcoming and did not give us any indication on the welcome we would receive. And there was no lock on our bedroom door which given that there is a restaurant and bar I would have felt more comfortable leaving our possessions in our room. Those 2 minor things aside we will be back!!! Many thanks Jane & Chris Chalcraft

we are staying ion shouldham with our family and popped in for a beer and some local produce... what can I say.. gorgeous.. the interior is a shabby chic dream, the bar [specially made for the owmer so it the right height to lean and converse] sold local beers and tip topwines.. peanuts on the bar and the smell of sunday lunch in the conservatory restaurant on the side. The lay out is fab. The little shop has everything you would expect at a good quality farm shop and then an annexe of what my mum would call "little billy does".. I strongly reccomend you visit. The owner showed me thier 4 poster on suite rooms which I feel in love with.. we will be back!

Our friend came to visit us in Shouldham, we had a full house so they stayed at the Chalk and Cheese B&B, On the Friday evening, we joined them for a meal, the atmosphere in the bar was very welcoming: the fire place, eclectic mix of furniture and settees give the old school hall a warm baronial feel. Our meal was excellent, simple and good Italian food with a range of Norfolk cheeses to follow with home baked bread. We enjoyed the meal very much and have been back a couple of times since and have not been disappointed. The food is good value considering the high quality of the locally sourced ingredients, all of which are sold in the Calk and Cheese Farm Shop next door. The Chalk and Cheese is a welcome addition to the Village.

One of the best lattes I have ever had!!!! The service wasn’t amazing but I find that with most of the places along the front of Hunstanton. The coffee niceness completely overruled the negative though!

I had pasta with braised beef & tomatoes. Very tasty & well presented. Sue had a chicken breast dinner. Very nice & served with a warm smile & friendly conversation. Very clean throughout. Parked outside the door! Can highly recommend. Thank you to all staff. Special thanks to the waitress who brought me bread to mop up the sauce. It was delicious & could not be left for the washing up.
