I had a table booked for myself and my husband and our 2 youngest children for dinner tonight (27.08.24) I had chosen the Castle as it holds special memories to our hearts as we got married here Xmas 2017 so because it was hubby's b'day I knew his birthday dinner had to be somewhere special ..... What can I say thee best scampi and tartar sauce I've ever had and I have scampi wherever I go so I've had it dozens of times and this was the best ever ..... Husband said he's never had steak and pepper sauce like it either our 7 year old son said the gravy on his dinner knocked the ball out of the park the food was out of this world massive compliments to the chef ..... The customer service from the staff during the online booking and tonight was second to none they couldn't do enough for us I was absolutely gutted that when I went to pay I couldn't add a large tip to the bill because I was paying by card but lucky enough hubby had cash on him ....... It was most definitely worth the money spent and will definitely be back again ..... 👏

It’s great to see the Cellar Restaurant reopened. I brought my mum and young daughters for a quiet birthday lunch for my elderly mum. The food was good. I had the club sandwich and my mum had the soup. The girls ordered from the kids’ menu and really enjoyed their pizza with chips. The staff were friendly and warm. Overall, a good experience. We’ll be back.

Volveremos pronto.

Had a quick lunch and had the steak sandwich, marvelous!! and must say the staff were brilliant,(particularly Rebecca, apologies if wrong name) visited on my own whilst traveling for work. Let me stay after food was finished and have a coffee with my laptop. Couldn't be more helpful. Would definitely recommend. Many thanks.

When you walk in the front door to the Cellars it looks like you have stepped back in time with cobbles under you feet and the shop fronts whitewashed very quaint. I took my mother her for afternoon tea. We were greeted at the desk by a a very friendly staff member who showed us to our table. The Afternoon tea was lovely, we had a selection of sandwiches to start, followed by homemade scones, jam and cream, followed by a selection of sweet treats and cakes, you do not leave hungry. After on our way back to lift we found a some information about cave hill and the castle it was very interesting.

Went for afternoon tea. It was deliciously and reasonably priced. On going down to the Cellar Restaurant I noticed beer cans, bottles, dirty paper cups and a napkin with food inside, together with cutlery on the seat outside the restaurant door. Despite mentioning this to what appeared to be a senior staff member, the debris was still there 2 hours later, when we were leaving. Shocking - and so easy to rectify. Food and service - 6 star. Cleanliness outside = minus 10

Disgustado.

Had a great meal at Cellar Restaurant, Belfast Castle. The staff are very pleasant, and our meal was tasty and served quickly. We had a table booked for a Saturday at 7pm (4 people) and only two other tables were occupied. I had a cold tarte starter - good but personally I would have preferred hot. The beef dinner was very good. The dessert, brownie ice cream, was fab. The only downfall was that they quit serving alcohol at 9pm and we would have liked to have sat on with a few drinks after dinner.

Last time afternoon had more items so obviously cut backs! Staff were pleasant but hard to get their attention or to even see them to ask for something and would have hated to have seen what they were like had it been busier. Never had a roast dinner with no roasties but it wasnt a big deal. Dinner arriver and my mash was Fridge cold!! So got a new one to be told sorry but there is no veg left unless you want it off the other plate..... meat was quite tought and not fresh. The gravy was like water too. Got to the desert and they had spoiled a lovely berry crumble by heating it in the microwave and making it soggy. Such a shame to have lazy chefs cooking for what could be an amazing restuarant. Overall we had a lovely evening, the staff were so friendly and helpful and the food was fantastic. Read some of the other reviews and find them hard to believe!!!!!This was a Treat Ticket meal so it gave us excellent value for money. Looking through the menu and prices on the whole seemed very average had it not been on a deal. Desserts may have been a little expensive and I can't comment on the price of a bottle of wine as it was included in the deal.We paid £30 for two 3-course meals and a bottle of wine. The meals themselves were absolutely beautiful. Soup with bread for me and a chicken Caeser salad for my partner. I then had the beef which was so tender it fell apart and the mashed potato was like velvet. My partner's lamb was also beautifully cooked and the whole service and presentation was faultless.Desserts were extremely nice - toffee apple crumble & ice cream for me and pavlova for the lady. Wine wasn't a cheap plonk - very nice indeed. Will certainly be back even at the full cost although not for the 3 courses as we both found it a real struggle to finish the meal as servings were very generous.Excellent, couldn't fault it and would highly recommend.

I booked here to celebrate my sons First Holy Communion. I took my parents and my father in-law for a meal, my two children and my husband. We were all very excited as it was such a special day and were really looking forward to a lovely meal. It was supposed to be a lovely treat. Well, We would have been better going to KFC. When we arrived we were handed a celebration menu. I ordered the turkey which was so dry. It looked and tasted like it has been pre-cooked and reheated. It was a really below average meal but with big prices. My son ordered the lamb. Again it was definitely pre-cooked and reheated. It was so overdone. There was not one bit of pink in it. It looked like a lump of steak. My father in law got the beef and asked could he have his medium. He was told it comes cooked the one way. Aka it's pre-cooked and reheated. Very overdone also. My parents barely ate half of theirs. I was so embarrassed. I had really wanted to treat my family to a lovely meal and it was horrible. We didn't want to spoil the day and make my parents feel uncomfortable by complaining so we just asked for the bill. We had been overcharged by £40 and there were three salmon dishes on the bill which none of our party ordered. My husband called the waiter over who took the bill away and said he had overcharged us £40 and apologised. We said that none of our party ordered salmon and there were three orders on the bill. He said it didn't matter as all the meals were the same price. I thought that they would need to have accurate records so as to order in the correct food to meet the demand?! It didn't seem very professional to me. I won't be back. And definitely wouldn't recommend for any occasion never mind a special one.

Strange that a person next table asked for medium to rare and he got what I ordered!Other food, steak, chips etc., was covered in salt.Photos on website look well, tablecloths etc., but you get bare tables. Online menu is not what you get as well. Only two staff for a busy night. This restaurant has really gone downhill. It used to be first class but I'd rather order a takeaway from a local Chinese restaurant than go back to the Cellar.

Title says it really. We visited with an extended family group, waitress was patronising, rude, slow and really didn't have a clue about food or customer service. She forgot half the order, was rude when later reminded about something else that still hadn't arrived, didn't follow up on two requests from our party and just shouldn't have been there. We visit here regularly and it has so gone downhill, I'll not be back to eat. Lots of coach tours who left with a very poor impression of Irish service and hospitality - shame on you.

Reviewing the cellar separately to Belfast castle. We stopped off here for lunch on a sunny Sunday. The outside area is lovely. The quality of the food was good. The staff could be much better.A complaint we and so many others had was the long walk around to the side door when there is a door at the rear.Eventually a member of staff put something against the door to keep it open.

I do love this place. Its a castle, and you cant get much more character than that. Cellar restaurant is better if you are seated in the room away from the entrance. Have had two steak meals when there of late and both have been perfectly good if not exceptional. Service was excellent it must be said. Food with a little more flavour would push this to a 4 rating.

We have always enjoyed dining in The Cellar restaurant as it always felt like a treat, especially as we love Belfast Castle. Service was always to the highest standard with friendly waiting staff who seemed to genuinely care that you were happy with your meal. However my expectations were sadly not met on a recent visit because whilst the food was excellent as always, the service quite simply wasn't up to scratch. The waitress seemed bored and made us feel that we were something of an inconvenience to her.I can overlook most things but rudeness and sullen behaviour from someone who is employed in the 'service industry' who is either unwilling or unable to do her job is not one of them.We will however return because we enjoy the location, food and ambience and can only hope this particular waitress will have either been shown the door ...or made to change her sullen ways!!

My partner and I visited here after walking the grounds for a bite to eat. Initially when we asked for a table we were told there were none yet the waitress didn't even try to look to see if they could accommodate us. When we were walking out we noticed a table at the back and asked could we sit there. So we sat down with menus and waited for around 15 minutes yet despite several waiters/waitresses attending to tables around us no one came to our table. Finally I walked to the counter and asked could we place an order, to which the waitress who told us originally there were no tables said she would come take our order. We both order soup and teriyaki chicken, mines was a wrap and my partners on bread. The soup was potato and leek which came with wheaten and was very nice but the wrap was disappointing as it did not have all the ingredients it stated on the menu. There was very little filling to be honest. Don't think I'd return to be honest because of how we were initially greeted at the door and then because my food did not live up to the description on the menu.

I visited my old home town and took a friend to the "Castle Restaurant" which is the restaurant in the cellar. Nice location. The service was average and i felt this had to do with the place being very quiet, so the staff were completing other duties as opposed to looking after customers. Being December i ordered the traditional turkey and ham which turned out to be turkey wrapped in a very skinny sliver of parma ham. This is not traditional and did not represent what was advertised. The christmas pudding was a bought in round portion and was average in taste. Having been here before i was disappointed this time round. I will try somewhere else next time.

I rarely write reviews but felt this was needed. Im from Belfast and went for lunch at the cafe with my sister next door to the castle. As soon as we got through the door we were met with a sour faced waitress who seen us as nothing but a nusience and snapped at us everytime we asked a simple question, very old outdated menu not alot of choice, we ended up leaving before ordering as felt uncomfortable in the cafe. Disappointed and embarrased that this isnt well managed and staffed especially for a top tourist location.

Was recommended Belfast Castle for afternoon tea however my expectations were alot higher. I expected to be in the Castle overlooking the Lough but was in a dark dingy cellar looking out of a tiny window. We were sat down & then forgotten about. When we were served i asked what the afternoon tea consisted off & the response was "you've booked afternoon tea & don't know what it is" - without an element of humour. So this did not set scene well. The sandwiches were good, great selection & well filled. The scones were small with no fruit, no other option than strawberry jam. The tea was excellent. The service & attitude really lets this place down.

We booked dinner ahead by emailing the restaurant directly. Response was quick and making reservation painless. They requested a phone number for day of contact with any issues. We found the locations easily with use of our GPS in the car. A long drive up to the entrance through a park like setting, we noticed a number of people out walking or walking dogs. It seemed like a nice location to do that for those in the area. The building itself and grounds were beautiful. Lots of beautiful pictures and nice view out to the city. Although inside was set up for a wedding the following day (what a great place to have one!) they allowed us to wander around as long as we didn't touch anything. It was pretty cool to see the set up for the soon to be newlyweds. We proceeded downstairs for dinner. It was about 7pm, the gift shop was closed so of course the kids were disappointed but saved us a couple bucks in that way. They had a little mock jail cell with a metal gate and a small movie playing inside. This made for a cute picture. We were seated immediately and the restaurant was fairly empty at the time we were there. We were provided with a prix fixe meal option/menu as well as ordering from the standard menu. We opted to order from the main menu as we all had differing tastes from what was on the more limited menu. However, that menu for 2 adults would probably be adequate as it also included wine if I recall. I did order a glass of wine for myself and my BF ordered a Guinness. We all ordered appetizers including either soup or salad as well as mains and dessert. The food was very good and our waiter was excellent. He chatted with us and shared some personal details about how he came to live in Ireland from his home country which we found interesting and enjoyable. I was very happy with our meal and the service provided The grounds were beautiful and I would recommend a stop here if you are in Belfast.

It had been a while since I was last at this restaurant, which is part of Belfast Castle, so decided to try it again. It is hard to fault anything, the food is very good the service also very good and there can be no complaints over the prices. However, it all just seems to be lacking in something. We you sit and think about it the only conclusion I can come to is the atmosphere is missing. What this restaurant needs is more people. It needs to be appreciated more and utilised more. The Antrim Road area does lack some decent restaurants so why is the Cellar Restaurant not used more? Hard one to answer but certainly I would recommend this restaurant for a nice meal out.

We went for a romantic afternoon tea in early January. We were moved into the 'nicer area' according to the waitress. We had to prebook a seat the empty cellar to let the Castle have time to prepare the afternoon tea. It wasn't particularly expensive - around £25 each. The bread was stale on the sandwiches and the coffee was plain filter coffee in a pot. There were macaroons of various flavours. It was nice, but not special. The staff were all focused in the other dining area and we were neglected for quite some time - I had to get up and ask for the bill and on another occasion to ask for more coffee. They also don't provide more sandwiches when you are finished, like other purveyors of afternoon tea. I thought the experience let down the atmosphere of the beautiful views and gardens of Belfast Castle. The afternoon tea component of the Cellar Restaurant wasn't great - it's expensive enough to pay for a pot of average filter coffee and stale sandwiches which were likely pre-prepared. I would advise anyone looking for a good experience try elsewhere- unless you're really not that fussy. But by definition, anyone looking for an afternoon tea experience might be looking for something a bit more special...

I asked if I could have a table for two and was told I would have to eat in the bar area. I noticed that the restaurant was almost empty. I stood to look through the bar menu and another member of staff ( who was very pleasant started to run through the menu) she also suggested we could eat in the formal dining area. I was very annoyed that the restaurant was sending out such an inconsistent message. I do not like being sterotyped into what type of environment is suitanle for me. Whilst over visiting my mother decided to book dinner here for the family. I initially wasn't impressed with the selection, as it wasn't my pick but decided to run with the choice anyway. The menu was a set menu and not very imaginative. Two of us had the Chicken Cranberry & Walnut Salad, The other two had the vegetable Soup. All very ordinary. Followed by three steaks and a duck. Again well cooked, poorly presented, loads of standard sides. Two unimaginative meringues and a Xmas pudding later and we were done. The service was very good, the two floor staff did manage the bar and restaurant quite well. I found the music selection somewhat irritating and listened to the same Adele album three times before it was changed. It was ok. Nothing memorable.

A very nice place, the castle but the restaurant was alright at best. Solid classics - steaks, slow cooked meat, fish but none of them had the oomph. It was a gastropub fare that while nice and comforting is OK in a pub but not necessarily in a superb location in one of Belfast's top visitor attractions. Visited with two Belfast friends who had been here previously when they remembered a cosy, oldy-worldy restaurant which served excellent food. Now, however, the restaurant is stark, modern, soulless, and although the waitress was friendly and helpful, the other members of staff who came to the table were offhand and uninterested. For example, they did not provide steak knives as required for steak, and the steak was served well-done instead of medium-rare as requested. Steak knives were requested, and delivered without apology. I opted for lamb shanks, was told it was not available, and advised that leg of lamb was - when it arrived there was not sign of a leg. Just slices of lamb. My Belfast friends will not be going back there any time soon.

My wife and I had a fantastic meal some months ago in the cellar restaurant at Belfast castle and decided on a return with the whole family for a celebration dinner. I have to confess second time around the meal was a bit 'hit & miss', the squid starter and Crossgar chicken main meal were small and poor quality, by contrast those in the group who had the steak or the salmon were very pleased. The restaurant was not very busy but the waiting staff seemed to be slow off the mark, in fairness there was a wedding on so maybe that had an impact. Approx £20 for starter and main meal if you opted for the steak. Overall, I would not be rushing back.

We looked a table here as part of a family special occasion. This place was quite full but not crowded, the decor pleasing, and everything very clean and tidy. Of course, the setting of Belfast Castle overlooking Belfast Lough is very appealing even though the rain was pelting down. We have a set menu, on paper looked very good. However, service was slow, anything we ask for we typically had to ask for a second time, and to be kind the food was average. To receive average food in a regular restaurant is one thing, but one does not expect to get average food in a place like Belfast Castle – overall, as a family we had a good time but the food disappointing.

We Went for a walk up Cavehill on St Patrick's Day and thought it would be nice to finish off with a meal at Belfast Castle…. how wrong was I! The Cellar Restaurant is soooo wrong! For a start, why stick people down in the cellar when there is a beautiful 3 storey castle above hardly being used at all? With beautiful views over the grounds and over Belfast Lough. No, let's stick people down in pokey rooms with no windows in the basement! Also, the basement is totally soulless. White walls, some terrible pictures and and nice factory cafeteria feel! TERRIBLE. The place was so old fashioned, the food was barely average, and the waitresses hadn't a clue. Why do the Council run these places? A private company could do so much better. Don't waste your time.

So let me begin... Myself and a friend had went out for a spot of power walking this morning and were caught in some heavy hail. We trooped the whole way up to the castle for a bit of lunch and upon arriving in the Cellar Restaurant, cold and wet, the manager passed us as though we were a pair of stragglers whilst looking down her nose. I asked the waitress if we were to waited to be seated or could we sit anywhere. She looked at us as though we had just stepped off a UFO, very unfriendly. She said did we want menus but did not bother to give us them we had to locate them ourselves. No I'm in for food but let me read the chefs mind instead of handing me the menu. She then came over ten minutes later asked for our food orders but quickly scuttled off before I could give a drinks order. Staff were ignoring me and I had to order our coffees when the food arrived. No sauces or vinegar were offered to us when the chips arrived, and I would have ate the dry chips anyway however I had nothing to wash it down with and did not fancy having a mouth like a dry shoe. I had to ask for these things that should be offered to you when left at the table!? The coffee arrived in cups that looked like they were created for Thumbelina and no sugar which I then had to ask for. Again she looked at me as though a head was slowly growing from my left elbow. I may have been slightly wet from the weather but I felt extremely uncomfortable and judged by the way her eyes were looking at me. As the cups were so small my coffee then spilled into my lettuce but I was so hungry I ate the coffee stained lettuce. IN CONCLUSION: the food was really nice, nice big chips, however the staff are extremely judgemental, abrupt, rude and look like they do not want to be there. Great food let down by staff which have as much life as a zombie from a Walking Dead Episode.

Went with my friend for a birthday lunch, mid week, end of Jan. There seemed to be a private function going on in the back room (black ties and suits so were presume a funeral gathering). The staff were friendly and pleasant although seemed quite busy even though there was only approx. 5 other tables of diners. We ordered a starter each, veg soup & a seafood chowder. My friend said the veg soup was great. The chowder was tasty and plentiful but baby boil potatoes did seem to be the bulk of it. Both were served with homemade wheaten bread (quite dry - defo needed a drink to help digest) went through 2 jugs of water! Main courses - lasagne, chips & salad (my friends dish) the lasagne was a vast portion, the chips were served in a dainty fryer basket & there was a huge tasty looking salad with coleslaw. I had the cheese & bacon beef burger with fries served in a dainty fryer basket (would've been nice if salad had of dressed the plate but it didn't).My friend said she enjoyed her meal and found it hard to finish the huge portion. I was disappointed with the burger. I found it very dry, I expected the burger to have been homemade ie tasty succulent minced beef but no it was dry and seemed compressed. Not easy to digest at all.Overall I would say I found this experience disappointing although I would give it another chance and I hope it can redeem itself then.

My wife and I had a meal in the Cellar on 20/2/15 booked for 6.30pm.When we arrived we found our way to the restaurant.... 2 potential customers were speaking to a waitress at the bar and we walked, unseen, into the restaurant.....lots of lonely-looking tables with only one occupied from 5pm. I had to go back to the bar for help after standing in the restaurant and the manager was quickly found and confirmed our reservation. I saw that there were only 5 reservations on the sheet for the whole evening.....amazing for a Friday night! The tables were "traditionally" laid out with white table clothes and Victorian-styled cutlery. Either a "walk in" couple had extremely loud voices or the Cellar echoed like a cave, but we heard ever word of their intriguing conversation 2 tables away....the next diners at 7pm, a group of four some 20 feet away were equally easily overheard. We were given the a al carte menu....I had to ask for the table d'hote menu which was different from that advertised and the manager seemed surprised that I did so. We ordered from the a la carte menu for choice, home-made mushroom soup (one piece of bread), and breads and oils (3 slightly varied breads slices) were tasty and the mains, local scampi and chunky chips and rack of lamb, correctly cooked and just the right side of pink, were delicious. Unfortunately absolutely no atmosphere, lights at full power and the music was depressing.... Eva Cassidy and her guitar...lovely voice, wrong setting... played from a ipod shuffle that stopped a lot and for minutes at a time so no music at all! Go for the food NOT the atmosphere.....might suit the more mature customer.....not for those below 35! Some starters £6 plus but mains sensibly priced. The manager had one waitress so limited staff....not surprised as minimal patrons! I'm giving an "average" score ...tasty food but the management need to rethink the rest....I think the Marie Celeste had more sailors found on board than this restaurant had all night!

Although it was pretty quiet for 3pm on a Saturday afternoon and there was no one else waiting it took a full 5 minutes for someone (there were 4 staff) behind the bar to even acknowledge us and it wasnt exactly a warm welcome. Booked a table for two on Friday night, we had dined here a few times, and although we found the food fine,we did have issues with the slow service. But this Friday night was the final straw, we asked to be seated at another table, which I think should be a Customer's wright to do so, if preferred table is not already reserved. Our waiter did not come across as Customer friendly, and on handing us the menu promptly left us before asking what we wanted to drink. We studied the menu made our choices and waited for someone to take our orders. We waited maybe 10 minutes before the same waiter came to tell us what the soup and fish on the menu were to be that night, this in my mind should of been done when he gave us the menus when we were seated. He asked our drinks choice and left, another 10 minutes later a young women came to the table asking if we had ordered drinks, we said yes to which she asked what they were,.this information should of been passed on to the bar from the waiter 10 minutes ago. During this time a large group of people were seated at a table directly in our eye line, and the waiter whom had seated us, processed to take all of the group's order, while we were still waiting to give our order. It was at this point I'd, had enough of the complete lack of Customer service, and we decided to leave. The staff in this restaurant need better training, especially the waiter who "served" us. The food maybe ok at this restaurant, but service counts for a huge amount too, in making an enjoyable evening. We will not be back, and I cannot recommend this restaurant to anyone.

We went for a family meal in September. Some preferred the bar menu instead of the cellar menu. This was not an issue. We were welcomed into the cellar restaurant and had a choice from both menus. My wife is disabled and a wheelchair user her only problem was locating the restaurant from were the lift left her. The food was very tasty and served by very pleasant helpful staff. We will definitely be back.

I was critical of the The Chester for its many young barmen who had no customer service. I was therefore pleased to see an older bar person in charge, who was so hard working actually obsessive cleaning. However this was short lived as this person / woman was not friendly actually everything she was asked for was a chore, surely her job I went tonight because I had really bad news and was trying to lift myself. Instead I was depressed by sour puss and unacceptable service. Sorry but do you not know the reason why people go out is to lift themselves.? We left and went to the always excellent Lansdowne.. Chester please learn make people need to be felt good and invited. My advice get rid of the OCD cleaner and invest in someone who is a professional person engaged in making the experience a pleasant nite out. Won't be back until staff changed Will

When will Costa ever get it right? Cafe Latte is NOT FLAT WHITE!! Flat White is a small non frothy double expresso coffee with just double the amount of milk to coffee. If I wanted a mainly milk coffee I would ask for a Latte or a Cappuccino.

We ate in this restaurant in the Hilton before going to a concert in the Waterfront Hall next door. We were there around 5.30 and were the only people in at that time. Some background music but little atmosphere. The food was tasty - we had starters and main courses - goats cheese and prawn cocktail and a cheeseburger and chicken. Service was slow for a pre theatre menu. We had to ask for the dessert to be rushed to be in time for the concert. All in all it was satisfactory but not an inviting experience.

This place has gone to the dogs. They also reduced the quantity/size of goujons. Goujon meal tonight was over £10 which is insane. Staff still nice. Management decisions.
