Castle Inn & Campsite in Tendring

We can't say anything about the pub - unfortunately it was fully booked that evening. The two motorhome parking spaces are in the pub car park. Sanitary facilities are rather simple, but clean and the warm water works too. However, there is no disposal option for gray water or chemical toilets. It's quiet at night. Fine for an overnight stay before or after the ferry.

Review of campsite as we didn’t use the pub. Cheap & cheerful no frills set up offering value for money. Pathways to toilets & shower could be better lit. Small field is on two tiers & is better suited to backpackers rather than those travelling in cars with larger family tents as the fields are not accessible with your vehicle. One washing up sink, two toilets and a shower. Site wasn’t as noisy as we expected it to be. Washing machines as pictured are NOT available for guests.

...very nice place for tents. Due to the proximity to the ferry, some visitors only come in the evening for one night. I have the campsite to myself all day. Mostly a tent, as there are only 3 places for motorhomes. Sanitary sufficient. Good pub there (I didn't eat) Super nice people. To the city center 8 minutes by car.

Nice pub, with some pitches for tents in the backyard, close to the Harwich Ferry. Very friendly staff. Definately recommended.

Could do with more than 1 real ale on tap

We camped there after arriving by ferry. The sanitary facilities are neat and clean, the lawn for the tents is straight and well-kept. There is seating outside and a nice permanent pavilion. Of course we cooked ourselves. Great job

Wonderfull atmosphere and excellent food!

Camping for one night! We got off the ferry late in the evening and were able to get a place to spend the night in a tent very quickly and easily. Small mobile homes are also possible. I wouldn't want to spend my vacation here, but for the one night after the ferry it was just perfect for us! Easy to reach, friendly, cheap! and everything you need is there.

Everything there you need. Clean washrooms, nice pub/ restaurant and very nice owners.

I'm thinking, grab yourselves a great meal before the ferry. Personally, if it was the southernmost point on the planet, which is the geographic South Pole - I'd opt for a home made sandwich or miss out. Mediocre at best.....and I was hungry 😂

Nice trad pub , great price campsite , resteruant is noted though no vegan offering.Friendly staff. Popped in today after a few years , place seems bigger, restraint busy.

We booked for a lunch with work colleagues and the service and food didn't disappoint.

Haven't been to the Castle in a long time but it won't be long before I'm back. Cracking pub with a real log burner, and the food was really good, well cooked and well presented, waiting staff were professional and frendly and the bar staff knew their stuff too. I would recommend this little village pub till the cows come home.

Good place to spend the night before taking the ferry. 2 available places to park your campervan to spend the night. Moreover, an area for tents. Very polite staff, clean toilets/shower and wide range of pub-food.

Fabulous, friendly pub, that fitted us in last minute. Food was good and nicely cooked. Service was excellent. Highly recommended.

To be honest we thought the food was quite expensive for what was on offer, we ordered a roulade which turned out to be an individual meringue. and our friends ice cream was solid she had a job to eat it.

Campsite is small and cosy. Clean toilets and it is behind a pub. Please book if you wanna have meals at the pub. We went on a Friday night and the restaurant is full. Recommended for families or short one night stays

I was there for the camping. I didn't have the opportunity to try the food.

A lovely pub with really nice and friendly staff. The food was absolutely amazing. We had a beef roast dinner. Highly recommend if you are in the area. The deserts also look amazing although we were too full from dinner to attempt one. Phone before just to check they have space for you.

I could only spent one day there. The place was very nice, and very cheap. The sanitary facilitiers very simple. The operators just super nice. The food very good. I ate fish and ships for lunch, followed by a great dessert. In the evening I went back to the pub and enjoyed my place at the bar. Luckily I hadn`t lost my key. Great night camping here with our camper before catching a ferry the next morning. Check-in is really easy and friendly staff. The field for tents looked really nice but as we were in a camper, we parked in the car park, but it was still quite private and good value for money. Facilities were clean, two toilets, one shower, and an outside sink for washing up. Nice and quiet. Would definitely stay here again.

We camped there for one night on our bike tour. Super uncomplicated, beautiful lawn. Cheap price and showers included.

Found this pub on our way to the ferry and had a good dinner. Helpful and friendly people and the food is good. Some old pub classics, but also some dishes with a modern twist. If you cannot choose, they offer also some tapas style dishes. Next time we go with the ferry, we know where to stop!

Has some camper pitches with power connection if necessary, nice and close to the ferry to/from Hoek van Holland. And a cozy pub with good beer.

Good food, nice surroundings, excellent service friendly staff will be using this restaurant more in the future.

Had a table for 5 booked on Sunday as the family came down for the weekend. The food was fabulous, the staff so professional and the service top notch! We also enjoyed the live entertainment whilst we sat eating our Sunday lunch. Great pub nestled in the countryside of the coastal area of Ramsey Essex, near Dovercourt and Manningtree. Highly recommended and great value for money.

Great food but service was very slow and the sign saying only 2 hours maximum on each table is a joke

We went here for lunch after visiting House for Essex and the young girl serving very helpful and informative. Menu very varied and good food. Very clean good parking and toilets

Just had the most delicious meal in The Castle Inn, Ramsey on our way to board the ferry from Harwich to Hoek van Holland. The food was amazing with friendly staff. Our dogs were welcome too. Highly recommended!!

Had a fantastic roast dinner with friends on sunday ,food amazing , toffee and walnut meringue was delicious aswell😋, staff were very efficient and friendly 👍highly recomend but best to book ahead as very busy and popular ,cant wait to eat there again , great choice of meals !!

Food was average , was a Monday evening . Very clicky . Everyone seemed to know everyone. The staff where overly friendly to many tables . We felt awkward and didn't enjoy . The food was also very average

Had a lovely walk around the stour estuary then a very nice fish and chips in the castle pub.the home made burgers are also very good would recommend people to go here as the food is great

Went on the off chance and got a table straight away. Had the roast beef dinner and it was amazing. Would highly recommend and will definitely return.

As a camper place it is not much. Basic. Parking in the Inn parking lot. Toilet and shower at the Inn. Nice garden terrace. At the terminal within 6 minutes! So ideal. Food and drinks at the inn very good!

Had a great meal. All tables taken. Bit of a wait for food but worth the wait. Different menu & different chef from our last visit. Definitely be returning.

Only popped in for a quick refreshment after a run at around 5pm on Saturday. Very friendly traditional pub with (apparently) very popular restaurant.

We had a nice stay on the way over but a horrible and unfriendly experience the way back. They booked us in wrong and the bar lady couldn't care less and send us away. I asked for suggestions in the neighbourhood, but she didn't even respond. "Nothing I can do". Stupid experience after our first nice encounter here. Especially the unfriendlyness is bothering for me.

We visited for Sunday lunch with a party of four. The Sunday roasts were excellent - plentiful portions served piping hot and the quality of the ingredients was outstanding. The star of my plate was probably the huge fluffy Yorkshire pudding. Can’t wait for a return visit!

Good terrace for a group. We were with 8 people and were served quick and smoothly.

Great place to spend the night before or after the boat. The owner is very friendly and you are in a parking lot with a lovely camping lawn above it with picnic tables and trees where you can sit and eat. Great, we will definitely come back here!

Last holidaymeal before getting on the ferry saturday evening. Could not have picked a better place! Mine was a personal traditional meal but more than enough choices on the menu. The homemade tartarsauce was brilliant and the chips just cooked right. And the Eton mess was simply scrumptious! And on top of that lovely ladies for the table and bar service. Thank you for making my journey home a little less sad!!!

Massively understaffed. Waited 15 minutes for a cup of tea.. when we came to order they didn't have what we wanted (steak and fish and chips). Not great

Stayed after getting off the ferry. Two pitches with ehu. £20 a night per pitch. Two toilets and one shower. There is an outside sink with cold water but no grey or elsan point. Fairly quiet night sleep.

Huge value for money with a great welcome and smile. I camped and drank ale. What more could I ask for? An outside shower and toilet block you say? Got it. Thank you. pa thank you for responding to emails too. Not many pubs do that.

Fast service, friendly atmosphere, not too crowded

Camped and Drank here. Fantastic pub garden and lovely atmosphere indoors. Not much of an ale range but a nice selection, all the usual draught suspects and even a cocktail menu for your fancy needs! Sadly we were only passing through the village but it's definitely a place we'll come back to next time we're in the area.

Had an absolutely great time. Staff were all really accommodating and lovely, happy welcoming vibes with a good food and drink selection. Camping facilities are lovely at the back end of the pub garden, privacy is created by a barrier of trees which are great in creating a division with the pub. Toilets were clean and shower well kept. Dog friendly and very laid back atmosphere which made us feel very welcome. We would definitely stay here again.

Food was lovely, pods work really well. Would definitely recommend and return. Only downside was, although food is done as table service, the drinks weren't. We also weren't not allowed to close the side of the pod when cold when this isn't a COVID rule and there aren't heaters.

great little camp site and cheap stopped the night. food fab and staff and customers very friendly. but remember where you pitch your tent because when you have had a drink and come back to campsite OMG 20 tents the same size and shape lol great little pub and site very clean toilets and showers

very nice pub but sadly you need to watch your change and if eating your bill. having said that food is very very good, service is good no complaints there.
