Castella’s Fish and Chips in Croydon

Clearly asked for a prime fillet of cod and a large prime fillet of cod, with chips for both. Got given one cod and one chips so me and my partner couldn't eat the same dinner together. 🙁

Reasonable portions , good service and fair prices..

Since the owner has left and left the 2 young chaps in charge the quality and portions have gone down hill sadly. For me it's gone from 5 star to 3 star

Just went there at 2230 To order some food and was told by staff they stop cooking at 2230 even though it says they do not close till 2300 so I recommend everyone stay away after 2200 then they try saying the reason I have no food as it’s Friday night

Great food. The best customer service you will find around, even when busy they strive to put a smile on your face. Would definitely recommend you come try it out even just once.

Used to come here years ago when it was the original family. Always lovely and welcoming. The food used to be great but now it’s under new management and “hosted” by this rude, angry, sad little man. I say host because I tend to see him at the front of the counter chatting to women while inexperienced youngsters cook the chips with old oil. It’s a shame that this idiot has muddied the Castella’s name and reputation. I would give it 0 stars if I could.

Super good fish and chips, a large dish for 2 people it was very generous! Very friendly staff who speak a little French perfect for our French accent, sometimes difficult to understand 😅 thank you very much for the gesture, and the street was not so "scary" compared to Marseille! 😂

It has gone downhill so fast. We couldn't even finish this as it was awful in every way. There are far better options locally.

No haddock, no Rock, NO Whitebait...what is the point of have clearly signed menu boards if you don't have the fish in stock...You're not gonna last long if you just offer one kind of fish...very disappointed.

Had fish bites andchips. Absolutely delicious. Their homemade sauce is fantastic. I will be back.

Awful soggy fish and chips. Told them twice now No gherkin or lemon with my take away fish and chips and both time’s completely ignored what I said and put gherkin and lemon. It’s happened twice now so won’t be going back. I couldn’t even eat the meal and spent £12. Such a shame it was the best fish and chip shop in Croydon. Ive still got disgusting taste in my mouth from tasting the chips. The chips were mushy as a result and more like mash potato. I don’t mind a gerkin in a burger with a fish and chip dinner No way. The bag was so damp the food nearly fell throw it. Drenched.

I was local to the area visiting family so I thought I'll pop in to get some food BIG MISTAKE!.. I ordered a large cod and chips and waited about 20-25 mins for my food . whilst waiting the owner gave me a complimentary small pack of chips which I thought was nice of him but the chips was undercooked , old , dry and tasted like old oil.. I gave him benefit of the doubt as it was complimentary and he was frying more.. Finally my food was ready my cod was not large as ordered and BURNT! (Looked like it had been cooked in old dirty oil) I explained to the owner that it was burnt and he started using his tongs and stabbing the cod aggressively shouting "this is not burnt and how could I say that". I explained to him that I was not happy to take that particular piece of cod and he told me its unfortunate and I still have to pay for it because he has already made it. I disagreed and told him I will not be paying for burnt food and he literally started screaming and threating me and my mother saying that he knows our face and we should watch out we quickly left the shop as my mother and I was afraid. I would NEVER recommend this place to anybody the owner is very scary and Extremely aggressive only God knows what he could have done if there wasn't other members of the public outside watching his disgraceful behaviour please AVOID this place at all cost .!!

I loved the hospitality of the owner who I found really friendly and engaging. He even offered me sample of chips waiting whilst waiting for my order which he cooked from scratch. Worth patronising.

Very long wait for food. Staff were not friendly and chips were hard and old. Wouldn’t recommend.

Went here as someone highly recommended this place, the person said that she used to come here years ago. I ordered a portion of chips. The men serving it was sitting on his phone and just served me old chips that were sitting there for who knows how long. I went back and asked for a fresh portion of chips and the owner was very rude and insisted that the chips were fresh. As he was doing a fresh batch of chips I noticed that the Saveloy sausages were sitting on dirty water. The new batch of chips had a bad smell and flavour as the oil was probably very old. I just threw them away. I don't believe this is the same management that built the reputation for this place and don't recommend it. Wish I took a picture of the first portion I was served, as the chips were very dry and dark.

First time visit today, served by two polite young men, I just want to say thank you, everything was cooked fresh, I did however order too many chips but they did warn me but I insisted lol. Enjoyed everything, nothing greasy and generous portions. Big ups 5* food and customer service. Oh and everything piping hot. 😊

Beat Fish and Chips I’ve had for miles around. We sat in and ate and the service was very good, even gave us a few chips while we waited for our order. Nothing was too much trouble for the guys serving us. Had a little side plate with sauces, lemon and gherkins also. Will definitely be back!!

Wow! The food at Castella's was amazing. We bought fish & chips for my Nan's 88th birthday, and she's typically very fussy, but we all thoroughly enjoyed the food. We were really impressed with the generous portion sizes. The service was also excellent – The gentleman who served me was very friendly and even gave me a couple of chips while I waited. I'll definitely be back to Castellas :)

Great value and customer service. Their food is tasty and cooked to order. This does mean that when they are really busy there can be a bit of a wait, but it is worth it! You can really taste the difference with their freshly cooked food. During lockdown the shop was refurbished so I had to try some other places but I found that nowhere else could match the portion size or quality of Castellas, so I keep coming back. It's a no-brainer. Edit: I forgot to mention their homemade tartare sauce, the perfect accompaniment to the fish. Worth a trip just for that.

My first visit and I was impressed by the hospitality and my meal. Great fish, cooked to order, with a generous portion of chips. What more could you ask for?

Worst place to go, very very poor customer service. Waited 15mins only to be told to step back due to Covid. Only customer, waiting for fish and chips to be told no, you have only been waiting 3 minutes and then the proprietor preceded to get out his phone to try to prove how long we had been waiting ! instead of apologising for the delay he then resulted to insulting us by saying we had been drinking !

Big portions, great value for money, top service

The new guy running it is superb. Loved the chips and the fish was great. Genuine passion and customer service. I look forward to the grilled and streamed fish going forwards. I'm a Mcdermotts man usually, but I might not be any more...

For those who knew the Castella's of old, with the lovely old Greek guy, its not the same place anymore. They dont even have glass doors on the cookers where they store the food once its cooked so flies and stuff can get in there. The fish was dry and tasteless, the saveloy was more gristle and fat than meat and they just give you a whole load of chips just to make up for everything. Shocking after been going there for 13 years.

What great value fish and chips! A very large crispy fresh piece of cod with a light batter and a huge portion of chips served with home made tartare sauce two pieces of gherkins and a wedge of lemon all for £8:00 wow it was delicious! Oh and the service is with a smile 🙂

Ordered gluten-free fish and chips for all my party even though only one of us needs it but thought it would just make things simpler. I have to say we, on regular non-gf diets, found absolutely no difference in taste or quality and in fact we were able to rate our meal as one of the best fish and chip experiences we've had. We all agreed... crisp, fresh and non-greasy... massive portions, chips with actual flavour, and both lemon and a portion of delicious home-made tartar sauce (I'm not usually a fan but this made me a convert for the real deal) all included in the very reasonable price. Super friendly, polite service topped it off. Our new go-to place!

I live in Addiscombe and I travel across to South Croydon, their chips are extremely tasty and very nice. Portions are very good as well.. The customer service there is of the highest order and always welcome customers with great conversations and banter. I cannot recommend this place enough.

This is my local. Food is brill here, never had reason to complain. I do miss the old shop but will be back at the new one (on a bit of a diet wink wink).

First time visiting after seeing all the reviews. Was disappointed the fish didn't look like it has been cooked in fresh oil the chips was just put on top of fish so time you get it home batter all soggy. Have a way to go to keep up with osies fish and chips

I’ve read great reviews about this place so was excited to try it out but sadly it wasn’t great. The chips didn’t taste fresh and it was overall just disappointing. Only after the food was ready and packed up did I find out the card machine didn’t work - not ideal.

Clean new decor, place needed an update. Great to see it. The portions are just as big and the fish is fresh and flaky. Perfect. The only down would be that the cod fillets had bones. Tartar sauce is made with capers!!! Kudos for that! Mika

I cannot tell you how great this place is. Always freshly cooked, delicious meal every time. Over generous portions. They give you a free cone of chips while waiting. Family run, they are delightfully friendly and welcoming.

Was going to go in... Glad I didn't. No provision for social distancing. No screens to protect staff and customers alike. No face mask worn by one member of staff, and incorrect mask discipline from the other. No card machine, it was apparently broken according to a sheet of paper on the counter. As we're in the middle of a pandemic, I didn't feel safe.

First time I’ve bought a take away for a while. Castellas is following the protocol, hand sanitiser fully available, social distancing whilst people wait for their food orders. I can not fault the staff working in here. Face coverings were worn at all times despite the heat of the friers. Great amazing friendly guys. Their food is fantastic too!! Thanks Castellas 👍

If I could do 0 stars then I would have. Food was disgusting, chips where refried, fish fingers are NOT fish fingers more like budget Fishcakes. How can fish fingers have potato in there. I belive the previous reviews are either Fake or from the previous owners. Very friendly staff but food taste like S*** Avoid at all cost unless you like poor quality food.

I was really excited to discover a new fish and chips store. But was horrified to discover the server working with the mask worn below their chin, exposing their mouth whilst they persisted to talk over all the food. Furthermore there was no sanitising of hands between the collection of cash and handling of food. Considering the state the country is in and the Covid crisis we are facing, one would think this business would be more in tune with hygiene standards and practicality. Yet when my mother asked about the inefficient use of masks she was not only confronted and berated but the server took nothing we said on board and ordered we go else where! I highly discourage spending your hard earned money on a business that does not care for you or your family's wellbeing at this time.

Great customer service from the staff who are extremely polite and friendly. The fish and chips were fantastic here and the best that I have had in croydon. Recommend visiting here as it is reasonably priced and fantastic quality, the renovations carried out recently are fantastic and worth the quality. Extremely slow service, since the change of the original chef the place has lost its magic, I don't know how you can take 20 mins to plate up a portion of chips! I've been here several times since the change and it was a dissapointment every time, I felt ignored in the queue and other customers were served before me despite arriving after me to the shop; unfortunately my family will not buy there again
