We ordered yesterday and it was awful. First the young girl who takes orders she just doesn't listen properly when on the phone, every time she messes up our order,literally every time. Then she says cash only which is not true. Then she had a nerve to tell me on the phone to pick up my missing order which I paid for delivery. I told her straight away I want to speak with someone else. Then the guy brought us our forgotten food and there was only 3 pieces of chicken and the rest nothing but fried skin yuuuuck. Very disappointed how it went yesterday. Spent £36 on food which tasted extremely bad. Cos normally it tastes nice. They need to change the cook amd that girl needs to be fired 😤 she's not even polite

Good takeaway, good food, but premises could do with a bit of an update. Paintwork all a bit scabby and seating is just nasty

1st time coming here staff very friendly and helpful, had nice food ,chicken was very tender which was lovely, very good portion sizes ,good to see they do them in metal containers, just to make you aware it is cash only ,but the cashpoint is next door ,can't wait to try another dish soon also great that they can deliver

Went here because Chung Ying was closed. I know they have the same owner but the food is completely different. Everything was dry. Chips were inedible (dry), noodles and rice were dry and tasteless. Reheated maybe.

Have had delivery’s from here and on all occasions it’s been great. The service was quick and friendly and the food has always arrived hot.

The absolute, dead certain worst Chinese takeaway I’ve ever had the displeasure of eating in my entire life. Food was bland tasting, inauthentic and burnt. Have to question the quality of hygiene. Fried rice and boiled rice must be the exact same thing to them. Would recommend going here if you are suffering from poor bowel movement as this stuff will certainly get you in the bogs faster than any medical grade laxatives. Waste of money, would rather have been mugged in the street.

Good food freshly prepared at reasonable prices

Awful! 25.00 down the drain! Chicken and beansprouts, no taste and slimey chicken, Singapore chowmain too salty, chips definitely not freshly cooked, reheated! And prawn crackers smell stale and taste just as bad !! Dreadful

Food is average at best. Don’t recommend anything with a sauce as it’s a sloppy mess. “Crispy” chicken is wet and batter sliding off. Get fish and chips or a kebab instead

This is a take away only place so couldn't give 5 stars for atmosphere, however there are plenty of seats where you can sit and wait. Be aware too that it only accepts cash. There is a coop next door which has a cash machine. The menu is extensive with lots of choice and many alternative Thai options (for example, the sweet and sour Thai option is far lighter and crisper) and lots to choose from for vegetarian tastes too.

Got fortune cookies and had two with nothing in it absolute joke

I order from this place every month when traveling from London to Tavistock to visit the in-laws. The food is amazing and I absolutely love it. Excellent value for money. In London prices are three times more and you get less food. Highly recommend this place, It's cash only which is probably why prices are kept lower, no complaints at all from me. 👌

DIABOLICAL!!!! 1st & last time we use this establishment…..food was dry, tasteless & cold. Never have I eaten a worse Chinese takeaway meal. I did call them afterwards to report as I believe they need to knw what they are sending out the kitchen,…..not even an apology from the young girl on the counter. Wish I read other reviews before going there. NEVER AGAIN!!!

We have eaten from here on many previous occasions and usually the food has been very good. On this occasion we made our usual order and unfortunately without exception every dish was disappointing. The salt and spicy chicken wings were stodgy, the ribs much more fatty than usual as was the crispy duck and the main courses were very bland. In addition there has been a 20% rise on some of the dish prices. I understand cost pressures at the moment but this seems excessive. We have been eating here for many years but this experience has prompted us to try the other Chinese restaurants in Tavistock for our next couple of takeaway meals and see if the quality is better.

Had decided to change our preferred Tavistock Chinese Takeaway to the Cantonese as the Birds Nest had left items out from our orders too many times. However, on Saturday our order had clearly been forgotten as people ordering at the counter received their food before us. I did not notice I had been overcharged (by about £8) until I got home. I double checked prices with a member of staff on Monday as those on line are very out of date. There was nothing they would do about it as I could not prove it - they do not issue a receipt, it’s cash only. To make the whole experience worse, my family did not enjoy their food, they said it was tasteless and dry. Sorry Cantonese Kitchen - we will not be returning.

When ever we order it's never less than £30, well tonight was disgusting we had a special chow mein it was dry and the noodles were mushy, beef black bean sauce the beef was tough the sauce like jelly, the chicken in sweet chilly sauce was swimming for it's life. The only thing that was ok was the chicken fried rice and the prawn crackers. We have noticed that some night are great some are ok and others are rubbish, tonight was rubbish I think this will be the last time ordering from here as I don't like wasting money on below standard food.

We have had good food from here in the past so we were very disappointed with the take away we had this week. We always order the set meal for 4. It has gone up from £42 to £53. I guess that’s to be expected but was was not expected was the poor quality of the food. The spare ribs were inedible. In the other dishes the meat was tough. It was awful. My theory is that I phoned the order in to pick up as soon as possible after they opened at 5pm. I think we got the previous days leftovers heated up, which given that we were there on a Wednesday, and they are closed on Tuesday, means we probably got leftovers heated up from Monday night. That may not be the case but that’s how it seemed. We will not go again after this experience as it was a total waste of money.

Arrived at 22:05 and they were closed, says online closes at 11:00 - not a one off occurrence. Very disappointed, especially as their food is so good! We don't know if they have changed their hours, and failed to update their online status, or if they are just prone to knocking off early. Maybe they should have been builders... The meal was ordered 5 o'clock for delivery at seven it did not arrive until about 8:10 they had the cheek to blame this on traffic in Tavistock on a Saturday night really. When the food arrived it was cold and the quality had gone severely downhill there was not the usual amount of duck all the spring rolls the beef chow mein just tasted of gravy and had no beansprouts in the chicken chow mien was the same overall a very unpleasant meal and I will not be using it again this is not the first time I've had issues with service here

I used to love the food here but after two very disappointing experiences I will not be going back. Food not good. Dried up and was in a solid lump. Almost sure it came out of a microwave. Sweet and sour chicken came in one lump not individual pieces of meat. Food was cold. Not an experience to be repeated. Sad that such an excellent take away has ended up so sub standard

Ordered our food at 6.30. When my husband went to collect it we were a dish short. No prawns!! Luckily my husband went to the Indian nearby and they could supply it... my husbands meal from the restaurant was amazing though. They should just let you know if they can't supply it.

Absolutely shocking, placed order for a birthday at just gone 7, at 9 not heard anything so I called. Customer service compromising (the young lad rang me back later and apologised) Food arrived (slightly warm) I said unacceptable as there were prawns in the dish. Later came out and I requested that the price should hold a discount. Delivery driver rang the owner (on loud speak) he was discourteous beyond belief, food was taken back. Went on. About delivery to this area although I was paying for the delivery. I place an order every three weeks which I no longer will be doing. Shocking really as the delivery driver usually has his children in the car and I always give snacks and sweets

Good food pleasant staff fast service

We always have had our takeaways from here. Last time was a while ago. Last night decided we fancied a Chinese and went to our usual go to place. Well, never again. Food was only luke warm, Chicken was so hard, as were the chips. Almost as though they were from the previous day and reheated. This morning we have both woken up not feeling great. Both feeling a bit sick. Such a shame as used to be really good.

Ordered chicken fried rice...got boiled rice and boiled chicken...nothing else in it. Hardly any chicken either. Really bad...won't be going back. Far better takeaways in the near vicinity.

Not using this place as often. The food is going downhill. Watery curry sauce. Portion's getting smaller. And it's just had a 1 star food rating. Such a shame because it was the best take away, in my opinion, for Chinese food. Let's hope they get this sorted. I would just like to add they have now sorted out any issues and are back to Thais former glory. Well done.

Really tasty food. Popped in while staying in the area. Had a set meal for 3 which was plenty for 2 adults and 2 kids

Food is always of a high quality and prices are reasonable. Only real complaint is that they don't take card payments, but this seems to be almost unanimous with Chinese takeaways for some reason.

Our first time ordering from Cantonese Kitchen and definitely not the last, the food was very tasty and of good quality.

We frequently order from here, the food is lovely. The only downside is they only take cash. Food is always ready for the time we booked for.

Ordered a vegetable with cashew nuts dish but there were no cashews in it at all. 1 dish was missing completely. Obviously this is how they make their money by not supplying whT has been ordered. Looking at other reviews this a regular error for most people.

Always find food to be excellent although have been given wrong order occasionally . One word of warning CHECK YOUR CHANGE

While the food is generally fair, they consistently get orders incorrect. We are fairly regular customers and have been there 3 times since January. Unfortunately, there has been mistakes on all 3 of those orders. There have been several more times where the orders have been wrong. From 1 large pancake roll instead of spring roles, fried rice instead of a main dish, and just last night, 1 item missing as well as an incorrect item. Last night the chicken was tough, overcooked and dry, whilst the onions were practically raw and the rest of the food was bland. Food has been made with no care and attention and I'm pleased to say that we are changing to the birds nest for our Chinese takeaways.

First time at this Chinese restaurant and found the food lacking, it sell chicken fried rice that hasn't been fried and i played find the chicken with the dish very disappointed wouldn't recommend this place

We had a pancake roll - great and prawn pancake to start...I should’ve known that was I mistake when the person on the phone had no idea what that was. The flavour was great but it had maybe 2% tops prawn it was basically a veggie dish... so I’d never order that again. We had 2 chow meins which were both lovely so overall I’d say good but be very cautious in what you order

Perfectly decent food. Decent enough dishes, but on the sweet side. Great duck in a "plum" sauce, which is more akin to sweet and sour. Very tasty and the duck great, but sweeeeet! Chicken satay - not in a peanut sauce, which is an authentic Asian offering. This one came with a perfectly decent sweet sauce instead. Tofu, Shanghai style, with mixed vegetables. Pretty good, but sweet and mediocre. Singapore vermicelli noodles: 4/10 Singapore chow mein: 6/10 Egg fried rice: not fried and a hint of egg. So, perfectly decent food but perfectly mediocre too.

Best takeaway around. Food is of mouth watering quality.

Update: January 2020, they now have their 5 star rating back. I am so relieved. Best Chinese in Tavistock. As I said before, the food has always been excellent. Never been disappointed.

You get what you pay for, it is a low to middle of the road priced chinese take away with middle of the road food. Ingredients always seem fresh, think if you stick to the basics like chicken chow mien or sweet and sour it is pretty good value for money.

Missed the rice, paid £2 for stale prawn crackers, chilli beef was 99% batter.

Came here based on reviews and limited places open after 10pm. Has chicken curry and egg fried rice. Good portion chicken and tasted just fine but not anything to shout home about.

I used to buy takeaways regularly from this shop until I moved out of town some years ago and was always very pleased with them. Remembering this, I travelled quite a distance to get one this evening for my wife and I. I wish I hadn't. It was the worst Chinese takeaway I can remember ever having. I bought spring rolls, prawn toasts, crispy chilli beef and sweet and sour chicken with plain boiled rice and noodles on the side. Not one item was enjoyable. The toasts were stodgy and greasy, spring rolls tasteless, chilli beef had minimal beef and lots of stodgy coating. Worst was the sweet and sour chicken. The chicken pieces seemed to be dried out and the sauce was, well... quite sickening is the best way to describe it - it had a horrible sweetness and the pineapple pieces tasted odd, as if it they been soaked in sugar.We left most of it and won't go back. It is such a shame as it used to be the best Chinese in Tavistock.

We ordered the crispy chicken in lemon sauce with a side of boiled rice. Once we got our food and tucked in we soon realised that the lemon chicken was unusually sweet. The sauce they used tasted like it had lemonade or sprite fizzy drink added which made the taste very obscure as it was obviously paired with chicken! To be fair the chicken itself was lovely and tender but the sauce just didn’t pair it right. The sauce would have been better in a glass with some icecubes! Although the Lemon chicken was a miss the customer service is great here! The lovely lady I talked to on the phone was very polite and nice at the shop when we picked up the takeaway. The meal was also very quickly prepared! We were told it would be ready ten minutes after we ordered which was wonderful. And it is ok a very central place in Tavistock. Such as shame about the lemon chicken but hopefully the other dishes are better.

Very good fast service with large portions and great taste

Came in late to Tavistock and this was one of the few places still open. Delicious black bean sauce beef and fried vermicelli! One of the best takeaways I've had. Service was very fast.

Regular customer as live in the area but absolutely disgusted with how poor this place has become !!! Used to be really good now it’s like they aren’t even bothered . The food is of poor quality and no one seems to care . They can’t even cook chips , they are just old ones re cooked . As a local I’d suggest anywhere but here , really sad where somewhere that used to be so good has gone to rock bottom !!!

I’ve used the Cantonese Kitchen regularly over the last few years and while the food has always been good the customer service has never been anything more than minimal. However a new low was achieved last night when we ordered for 5. On collection I asked to check the order ticket as I’d had previous incorrect orders from them - that didn’t receive a very good reception - and yet again it was wrong. When I pointed this out I was told by one of the teenage counter staff that she had ‘read it back when it was ordered’ - when I replied that it wasn’t what I’d ordered she tried to repeat her initial statement - basically arguing with a customer...She then told a scowling 30-something man about it who said, without apology or pleasant preamble ‘5 minutes’. So after 5 minutes I collected the food and drove home. Sadly this wasn’t the end of the saga - 2 of the main meals ordered were incorrect and a whole portion of wings was missing! I didn’t feel inclined to complain again or drive the 3 miles back so just got on with it. Apart from taking each lid off to check every dish I’m not sure what more I could do to ensure my order was correct. The obvious conclusion is that while the food is usually good, the counter-staff and kitchen staff are disorganised and/or not very customer-focussed. The trust is gone so I won’t be using this place again. Tavistock - we don’t have to put up with this poor service!!

Best In Tavistock. Maybe. But I can say that the food is very good and the prices reasonable. If you are looking for Chinese food in and around the Tavistock area then this place is certainly worth a visit. Though do note it is take away only. Parking nearby on the road or just a few yards further down is a small car park. There is some oneway road system in that area so if you are visiting then be aware of the oneway system.

Staying near Tavistock for a weeks holiday as we do every year in a cottage and fancied a Chinese for tea this particular evening.Looked on trip advisor and as reviews were good decided to order a Chinese for myself and my husband. I ordered chicken in lemon sauce and fried rice and house special fried rice . We regularly eat from our local Chinese takeaways where we come from in Stockport but this was the worst we have ever had .No taste chewy and the fried rice had not seen a frying pan or wok ! The meat was dreadful quality . So wish this could have been more positive. Tavistock you haven’t got a clue how good a Chinese could taste like you are missing out.

Visited here today having read the reviews on Tripadvisor. Instead of going out for a meal we went for a takeaway. Well we definitely wasn’t disappointed . Food was piping hot even having to travel back to our cottage at Sherill Farm. Food was absolutey delicious. Good signs were - the reviews were better than other Chinese takeaways in Tavistock and then whilst waiting for our food the phone did not stop ringing at that was at 5:30 this evening. Would recommend

Ordered some food... got home to find out they completely messed up the order. When I rang them about the issue they said it couldn't have happened. Need to work on their manners when dealing with customers. Avoid if you actually want what you order.

Our usual takeaway is closed on Monday evenings and so we decided to give the Cantonese Kitchen a try, and we were not disappointed! The food exceeded our expectations, the flavours we just amazing! Didn't have to wait long for our order, price was good, service very polite and plenty of choice on the menu. Again, the flavours we just amazing, we had chicken with mushrooms and chicken in plum sauce and wow, there was just something quite new, something our taste buds hadn't experienced before. Can't wait to get another takeaway from here, would highly recommend!

We are regular customers of The Cantonese Kitchen but after tonight we won't be using them until they buck up their ideas!! After placing our order my husband went to collect it and brought it home. We had the wrong sauce, no prawn crackers and we had asked for plain soft noodles which were not plain. My husband rang them and was told to go back and collect the right items. On his return the sauce was now correct and we had prawn crackers but the noodles had been remade exactly the same way and so we couldn't eat them as I can't have onions!! In the end they went in the bin alongside the first lot. If this was a one time blip we would be understanding but this is now the 3rd order in a row they have got wrong in recent weeks and it is not acceptable especially when they read the order back to you. We will be using one of the other local Chinese take aways for the time being.

Awful tasteless food, it wasn’t fresh food at all, the Meat was dry. Would Avoid, I was expecting fresh food but it tasted like it had been sitting around all day, and when I ordered it was ready in 5 minutes which is far too quick.

Very plain and tasteless food, not many vegetable in the dish, spice and salty ribs are not spiced and salted, duck Very chewy, prices on the higher level.

Visiting family in the town we ordered food for collection and all were very pleased with the selections. All very tasty, hot and plentiful and as usual there was food left over as spoilt for choice and more dishes ordered than actually needed. Would certainly use again.

Unbeatable Chinese.We have used them for years and never had a bad meal. Take away only.

So visiting the area and staying in Princetown we thought we'd drive to the nearest town and grab a Chinese for our last night. We drove for 15 minutes and arrived at a busy place. Encouraged by the apparent appeal we placed our order. So first issue then arose. They don't take card payments at all. Not ideal as a cash point is available down the road but not ideal. Walked for 10 mins and went to collect. Was handed food and wished a good night which was great as I had money in my hand to pay. I had to really try to get my food paid for as they had lost the ticket. Had to go through order and eventually sorted. All good we started our drive home looking forward to some yummy food. Get back to our Airbnb home for the evening and set up table, go to dosh up and we have a whole dish missing!!! Rang the restraint. They said oh sorry well credit you next time you come in. Explained we are from Dorset and not locals. Put on to boss. Someone will deliver. Give mobile and address. Put rest of food in oven to try to keep warm. Half hour later a call. Went out to road to collect food. Settle down and eat. Food was okay but everything was over sweetened somehow. Pleasant but sickly. Partner was unable to finish chicken curry which is very unusual. Overall disappointing and expensive. £25 for grief and disappointing food. Although we could have had it free to be fair due to blunders. If we are ever this way again we would defo try one of the other 2 in the town as opposed to this one.

Great little Chinese takeaway, ideal when you can't be bothered to cook.

Family visit and we all like Tavi on a visit but evening arrived didn't want to cook so were is there a take away. Google has the answer and reading the reviews, off we went and glad we did Up on to the Moors to watch the stars and tuck into a realy good feast.

Couldn't agree more with the other reviews. We were visiting tavistock on holiday so had no idea where a good take out was. Fortunately I went with other views from trip advisor and we were not disappointed. we chose a range of starters and mains including a vegetarian option. Really tasty food which you can see being cooked in the kitchens as you wait. Reasonable prices, speedy service and great tasting food. Couldn't ask for more.

Had a smashing carry out set meal. We had a meal for 4 plus a couple of extra dishes and our guests were sated by the end of the meal. Everything tasted fresh and there were no greasy dishes. I thought it was very good value and will certainly go again.

Chose this takeaway while on holiday in Tavistock after seeing reviews on this site. Food was superb, one of the best Chinese meals the family and I have had in a long time. Also really well priced for what we ordered, thoroughly recommended!
