Calypso Caribbean Restaurant in Blackburn with Darwen

Having spent two hours coming up the locks to Blackburn we were just looking for a late lunch somewhere dry. Well, what a welcome! Of course the kitchen is open, of course you can tie the boat up here, stay the night if you like. Well why not, because the cocktails and the food are as excellent as the welcome. I don't know if it really is the worlds only sail-through Caribbean restaurant but I'm certain it's the best one on the Leeds & Liverpool!

First visit to collect a takeaway, will not be returning. This is not Jamaican food, the curry goat had no resemblance to what it should taste like, it had no seasoning and no scotch Bonnet chilli taste, the plantain and the dumpling were cooked in some old type of oil, the sweetcorn had no kernels and the rice and peas had no seasoning no coconut flavour and was bland. The chicken and steak kebabs were overcooked and the chips were soggy. All of the food went in the bin. My husband is Jamaican and I know good Caribbean food and this is certainly not it. I will not be returning. It was a waste of £32 and not what I was expecting for an anniversary dinner, I had to cook so we had something else to eat.

Oh my goodness - what a find. Recommended by my sister. Unbelievable food and what value for money. We had a shared Calypso platter and chips. We only bought a single one; absolutely delicious, fabulous staff and so cheap. Best value we have had on the canal around England. So quirky and you can moor outside. Excellent.

A very uncomfortable environment when me and my girlfriend came for dinner last week. The young girl who was serving was staring at my girlfriend all night long giving her evils. Felt like she had a problem. She had dark hair and was very rude for example smashing our drinks down on the table and not using manners. I will never step foot in this restaurant again which is a shame because i love the food however the service shown from this young lady was absolutely disgusting.

Been several times, the place does look a bit run down, but the food does make up for it, this is proper soul food! Great value for money, and if your not a snob you will love it 🥰

I had booked for 6 of us on the phone. When we arrived they didn't have our booking & were quite rude about it instead if apologetic. They then said that they'd probably be able to fit us in. They showed us to a table away from everyone in the corner, it was really cold as well. We were there for my partners birthday so had wanted it to be special but was spoilt. The food was nice, Hannah who served us was lovely & did her best to make it a good night for us. Sadly, we won't be going back.

Excellent food as always, we had the Reggae box...loads of food, loads of variety. Thought it couldn't get any better but the Reggae disco blew us away!!! She had every tune we asked for, thanks for a great night, DJ Shazza! We will be back!

Calypso is one of our favourite places to go. The food is always spot on (recommend the mutton curry and red snapper). Good atmosphere and music too.

A works party of 26, all ordered different meals, the food arrived in good time, was piping hot and was absolutely delicious! Would definitely recommend !!

What a great family meal we’ve had tonight at the Calypso , Blackburn . The food was amazing , the staff especially the waitress (owners niece) was extremely attentive and friendly . The vibe was chilled which is perfect for families . You need to try the king prawns in garlic . By far the best prawns I’ve ever tried 😍 we will be back again soon 😍 thankyou for a wonderful evening.

My friends and I had traveled on the boat along the canal for 4 days from lymm ,as we had heard such lovely things about this place. When on arrival the place looked ace , nice tunes and lovely views .. we sat out side and ordered some cocktails , but we didn’t order anouther one as it was full of artificial sugar syrup and cheap cocktail mix. We ordered food and I will say that the food was spot on !! Nice flavour and cooked really well I can not fault the food . Everything was going well and having a good time .. then one of the drunken owners friends came over to ask for a cigarette, I said “ sorry I don’t have any “ he stood there very drunk mumbling things under his breath.. Me and my friends ignore the man and wait for him to leave for table . He came back about about 30mins later and continued saying things like “ very nice “ and “mhhhh” I asked him to leave me alone he was obviously looking at my in a sexual way and it was making me uncomfortable, he then thought he would try his look and lent it for what looked like a kiss . I stood up and told him he needed to leave the table, he still hovered around for a cupple of minutes until his concentration switched back to his drunk friends . I will just add that I’m 25 year old woman and this pervert of a man is probably 70 . I went in to tell the manager at the bar , she came out and told the owner about what had happened as he was one of his friends . There was no care From the owner and me and my friends left , when leaving the owner was talking to staff at the bar, unaware that I was still in the building and said “ she isn’t from round here it doesn’t matter he’s been coming here for years” Take what you will from this review , but the owner is a drunken mess who doesn’t give a crap about anyone Outher then his mates and his pocket . God knows how this place is still open with that guy as the owner!! Save yourselves and avoid this place .

The owner Dave Wilson abuses customers and staff - he's a drunken bully who picks fights when drunk and stoned which is most of the time. Worst of all rats run amoke in kitchen and outside, without any care for peoples health - avoid at all costs, not least your health

Made to feel very welcome, we had a lovely meal including jerk chicken, kebabs, rice n peas, and dumplings. All the food was tasty and well presented, the kebabs being my favourite. I will certainly be returning for another visit, hopefully I will have more time to spend here next time.

Found this by accident after visiting nearby. Look for the Wharf signs, not far outside Blackburn centre. Not many pub car parks have wall art, or a huge dragon seemingly ready to dive into the canal! Great food, made in-house, authentic and great value for money. The cold wind and driving rain warmed away by the quirky decor ( and lovely spicyJamaican food) Add a brilliant Landlord, excellent reggae soundtrack for a lucky find Highly recommended

Nipped up here after a shopping trip. Had pineapple juice then chicken curry, rice and dumplings. Good food and friendly service. I love this place with it's quirky Caribbean themed decor. We will be back.

After traveling 7 hours in pouring rain on the Leeds Liverpool from Nelson, we arrived at a destination we have wanted to visit for a very long time. Pulling up at the mooring of the calypso restaurant and bar, within minutes of arriving we were greeted by Dave the owner who gave us a very warm welcome. What a fabulous end to a very crap day on the canal. Dave was with humour and lots of banter and welcomed us to his amazing fabulous carribean food bazaar. I am so happy we got to make it to this place of want to visit on our travels as it was one of the best meals out I have had in a very long time. We had the carribean platter which comes with a taste of everything and may I say the fish and prawns where cooked to perfection and the mutton curry wow. The atmosphere was great and staff were lovely and friendly willing to help with your choices. Prices unbelievably reasonable in fact I would say very cheap for the standard of food we received. My compliments to the chef outstanding. I am sorry we have to leave as I would love to spend the weekend here it's just so good. Blackburn and this area while on boats get a bad rap but I would highly recommend a stop here it's safe secure and good moorings. I would also recommend any visitors in this area to give this little gem a visit also locals who have not been you don't know what you're missing, loved our visit here sad it was short would love to come back here for longer next time but CRT seem to rule our not so relaxing journeys 🤪 Hope to see you again Dave and your lovely crew. I've been here a few times and its always good food - my favourite is the ackee and saltfish - the big bro reggae box is great too. Definitely worth a visit!

Big portions, great taste, friendly staff and good vibes. One of the best in Blackburn and one of them places you know you have to visit again.

Had a fantastic meal here today with a friend and my 2 children. The curry was stunning and all the meat was in such large portions and we were even given boxes to take home what we couldn’t manage to eat there and then. The dumplings were perfect and the Jamaican style salad was perfect to cool the mouth from the Jamaican spices. An excellent meal. And being greedy as we are and I admit it, we had a tasty pineapple and apple crumble mmmm that was lovely! The place was very clean and tidy and staff were really friendly and attentive, even tolerated my kids running around the place and at times found my child with ADHD amusing. ? It can be hard to find a place that’s relaxed when it comes to children with ADHD. Will definitely be going back here again. Would recommend to everyone and anyone.

My fella has heard lots rave about this place and I was so dissapointed. We got the carribean kebab at 12£ each!!!!!! It was basically one piece of chicken and one piece of beef ( small pieces) on 4 scewers drizzled in a sweet sauce. The chips were cheap frozen things. The only good thing was his dumpling. Everything else lacked any flavour. I was so gutted as carribean is my favourite food. We might of ordered the wrong dish but I feel for the money it has totally put me off going again.

Celebrating a friends birthday last weekend at calypso blackburn. As soon as we got out of our taxi we could smell the spices. We was greeted at the door by the head chef, who was off duty that night, and was prompted to take a seat and to take the place in. Based in a grade 2 listed building I expected something different and this place is incredible. Large statues scattered around the greeting area and bar, posters and T-shirt’s of reggae legends aswel as posters. Very unique.As we are lead towards our table I notice the friendly staff playing with a couple of children by the piano while their parents are still eating. Yes, a piano. I wasn’t there on a lucky night to see it being played but I am definitely going back when I can. Our food arrived, we ordered the sharing platter for two and we could have easily feed four. The goat in the curry was divine. Melt in your mouth and a explosion of flavours. The fish, red snapper, was also very flakey that it too melted In my mouth. The chicken was so crispy and flavoursome along with the coleslaw. We also had kebabs, prawns, dumplings, corn, patties and black bean with rice. We ordered a side of Mac n cheese too. I like to think of myself as a ‘Mac n cheese connoisseur’ and I can hand on my heart say it was the best I have tasted. After we had our food we decided to stay here for a few more cocktails instead of heading into town. 2 cocktails for £8 and 2 red stripe for him and some brilliant reggae music being played. The place itself was amazing. Grade 2 listed building Right beside the canal. It is stunning. I can’t wait to go back in the summer for chef David’s ‘famous’ barbecues.

I know my review is going to go against the generally good reviews for this place but in all honesty I just can’t give it more than 2 stars.The food was actually nice, tasty, absolutely nothing wrong with it. The presentation was nothing special however, and why on earth would you only be given soup spoons to eat your dessert? Plates and dishes were cheap and nasty too. The cocktails, whilst good value at 2 for £8, were very average and presentation very basic.The decor of this place is certainly quirky and I do think maybe at the beginning it looked fab, however it all comes across now as very shabby and poor quality dining tables don’t help.The best thing here is the staff, the waitresses were lovely.Possibly not the restaurants fault but in the gents toilets young lads were snorting coke in open view - not what you want to see when out for a family meal.Had a meal here a few years ago and wasn’t over keen but decided to give it another chance in view of the good reviews - sorry to say we won’t try it again

My self and my partner went down with a few Friendster a joint birthday meal and upon arrival we was greeted with a warm welcome,drinks were nicely priced lovely music then when the food came everything was cooked to perfection I could not fault one thing. As there was 6 of us we got 3 platters for 2 one curried mutton and one curried chicken and a side a of Caribbean chops which were perfectly seasoned and tender the home made patties were beautiful fried dumplings perfect size and lovely golden brown. The food was out really fast and pipping hot even the owner David came over had a drink as a chat with us after the meal made sure everyone’s meal was perfect and his hospitality was bang on if you haven’t tried it get yourself down for a perfect night of brilliant food music and laughter we will definitely be returning in the near future and is also child friendly couldn’t of got anything better

Went for the first time tonight. Great relaxing place with fab reggae music. Ordered a platter for two as we'd never tried Caribbean food before. What a fantastic mix although you need a good appetite as there was so much...managed to eat most of it though as it was so good. David and staff were very friendly and service was quick and attentive. Will definately be going back but think we will try something different as there are so many fantastic sounding dishes. All in all a great place and would highly recommend. Thankyou :)

We had a warm and welcoming service with quick drinks and food order. The menu was very good and so was the drinks list. We all enjoyed our food and the portions were huge, the only criticism is that my food needed a bit more spice[i eat spicy foods]. My son had ice-cream free ,from David one of the owners, he was so friendly and warm and genuinely appreciated our custom. Next time up North we will revisit.

Travelled over from Preston with my partner and 4 friends for a birthday yesterday. We opted to get 3 x sharing Platters 2 with what can only be described as the softest mutton I've ever had and 1 with chicken so we had a variety of gravy to share between the table. The mutton was so tender and the chicken on the other just flaked apart like a piece off the perfectly cooked fish that was also on the Platter. The kebabas had the perfect amount of sauce and the patties are to die for.We added a couple orders of Mac and Cheese to share and 1 off my friends dinning with us said it was the best she had ever had and this woman loves and knows her Mac and Cheese.The whole night couldn't have been better all staff was politely attentive and happy to assist, as already mentoined food was faultless, and facilities where all spotless with everything provided and more. I Highly recommended a visit to Calypso and judging by the conversation at the table over the food last night so do my other 5 guests.

We've been visiting Calypso for a few years now and it's a favourite of the whole family.However, I'm always a bit nervous when I recommend a restaurant to friends... But we came in today, very last minute... And everyone loved the food as much as we do! Thanks for the fab food and accommodating us all (9 of us!) 5 minutes before the kitchen closed!

We were here for a Christmas Party and there was a large group of us, we had pre-booked for a large table and had the banquet. A couple in our party had pre-ordered other meals like burger or steak which also looked delicious too. They brought out various things and the fish was really lovely, not usually a lover of fish and dont tend to have it off a menu but thought would give it a try and it was delicious and had some more. The chicken that kinda like kfc batter but sooo much nicer was lovely too and wasnt sure about the dumplings but these I also really enjoyed. Some things were a little bit too spicy for me but on the whole not as spicy and hot as I thought it would be so would definately give this place another go and also if now saw a caribean restaurant would have an idea what things are like and what to have. Plenty of food and really good quality and great atmosphere. A different xmas party to the normal but really enjoyed it.

wow first time we went with are little baby so welcoming and staff were Bob on and the food was amazing couldn't fault it on bit and the boss came out his way to say hi second time was just me and wife and tryed a few things we never had before and wow amazing food and yet again staff were on the ball with everything defo are new favourite place to eat out worth every penny be intrested to see what events are like there have to go to one over the holidays over all best place we have been with the family and just myself and my wife

The quirkinesses of the place is probably the best thing about it. Food wasn’t fresh, curry tasted amazing but other things off the platter didn’t taste fresh, which was disappointing. Staff were nice though

Me and my boyfriend went yesterday ( Sun 1st Sept ) spare of the moment thing. What a find! We loved the happy vibe of the place. The staff I have to say surpassed themselves, very attentive .'Stamp & Go' was our favourite dish! With all this in mind I would just like to say Thank you to everyone at Calypso. I have always enjoyed going to Calypso. The food is always tasty. With that said, the fried dumplings are not well tasting. They were hard and dense and very sweet. As I know exactly how the fried dumplings should taste (being Caribbean), in my opinion who ever prepared them did not knead them properly and added way too much sugar. We eat with our eyes, in my opinion, the food presentation is poor. When they had now open the food presentation was on point, now it's non existent. I had jerk chicken with 3 sides. My husband had jerk pork with 2 sides. We will definitely return as the spices are on point.

I was taken here for the first time about year and half , we have been so many times since. Never let down by the food, service or staff. ESP the manager. He is always friendly and welcoming. The cocktails are amazing !!! Can’t wait to go back again. Please pay a visit you won’t be disappointed!!!! Can’t rate this restaurant enough. Xx

Went to this restaurant on a recommendation from our daughter who had been once before. We went on a Saturday at about 5.30pm and to be honest the restaurant looked empty but they said they had one or two tables free. I would recommend booking as all the tables were full when we were leaving!

Been here a few times in the past year and a half and always had fantastic food and service. It offers a bar ordering service (which is cheaper and casual) during the day and a full sit down table service during the evenings. Going during lunch time on a sunny day is such a chilled experience as you are on the canal and can just wander in and out and meet the resident moggy. The food is always out of this world when it comes to taste, nothing here is bland. The combo platter is the one to have if you haven't been before as it offers you a bit of everything, but there is a lot so make sure you're hungry before you go. Staff are always lovely and the value for money is superb. If you're into flavoursome food definitely give this place a try!

Came here on a spur of the moment thing and am I glad we did.

Well it’s been a while since I last visited this restaurant and my goodness it exceeded all our expectations.We visitedwitha partyod nineteen people and not one complained the service was brilliant and the food out of this world. Most of us had the buffet with jerky chicken and compilation of fish, prawns and red snapper and the food was great. The bar prices are also very reasonable and will definitely be returning.

Just visited here after a recommendation. Travelling by bus and train for an hour and a half. At first sight I thought the front area looked dirty, lots of cigarette butts stuck in the cobbles and an old, which I can only describe as a shuffle board table rusting away in the opposite entrance. I ordered th mixed combo which comes with calypso fries. On the menu online you can add as an extra red snapper and prawns for £6, but they had none. My fiancée ordered jerk chicken wrap with normal fries. When the food came the fries which were chip shop chip size and were exactly the same. The rest of the food is average at best, and I wouldn’t say authentic as jerk chicken authentically is cooked in a smoke house. The most authentic Caribbean thing I experienced was watching two youths smoking dope a bit further down the canal from where we were sitting.

Amazingly consistent as always if your looking for a real taste of the Caribbean then this is the place forget turtle bay come here instead

Called in with my mum before going to a comedy gig at king George's hall. All food was lovely, especially the dumplings. Very friendly staff. Great view of the canal. Would definitely visit again.

One of the best places in and around Blackburn to eat. I visit Calypso all the time and the food is perfection. With a wide range of drinks and very friendly staff I would highly recommend a visit. Great prices and portions too!

The platter was really nice, with the variety of chicken, rice, ribs. Did not need the chips, and the food could do with more seasoning. It was fantanistic the last time I visited would go back again.

Went here for my birthday meal, 15 of us so went for the buffet option with snapper and prawns. So much food! Everyone left with very full, happy tummies and a couple of people with the leftovers too which the staff were happy to box up for us. Absolute bargain at £20 p/p and cocktails 2 for £8. Have booked back in for Mothers day.

Visiting Blackburn? You have to go the Calypso. Caribbean food in a very friendly and relaxed environment. And the staff, from the owner who greeted us on arrival, to every single staff member we met were unbelievably friendly and helpful. We will be back!

This was a lovely place to go with the children, nice atmosphere, place was clean, staff friendly especially with my children. Food tasty, well presented, lots of choice on the menu but the mixed platter is such good value I would deffiently have it again.

My daughter and I tried calypso on a Thursday lunchtime. We both went for the lunchtime special. The jerk chicken leg was nice but the sides were just ok, the rice and peas were a let down, very wet and tasteless. Service was good.

Came here recently before watching a show nearby. Arrived quite early (5.45?) and they weren't serving until 6. I think we were the only ones in there for a time but that didn't matter and we expected it, being early evening on a Thursday.

Me and 3 friends went to this restaurant and weren’t expecting much to be honest. We opened the dirty sticky menus and almost walked out. The staff came over and were very helpful and friendly though. The food came and we couldn’t believe how good it was. We had a great night and really enjoyed our experience there. I can’t even mark them down a star for the dirty menus because the rest was amazing. You will definitely see us there again

Me and my mrs dropped in the other night. We didn't book. It wasn't busy at the time. But was absolutely brilliant. I had the chicken sharer for one. Correct I didn't share I tried to eat it all but couldn't. And the Mrs had jerk chicken.

Drove from Blackpool and went on a Sunday lunch time. Easy to find and car park had plenty of spaces. We had the platter for 2 and 2 pints of shandy. The platter was beautifully presented and the food was hot. There was plenty of food for the 2 of us and it was delicious. Staff were very friendly and helpful. Will definitely be going back.

If you want the of soul food and carribean then this is the place to go for you relaxed atmosphere and just great food the taster platter for 2 is amazing we had brilliant birthday there for my son couldn’t fault it

Me and my partner went for a romantic evening. I got food poisoning from this restaurant. We both ate the same chicken but I had a platter that contained fish, two types. It was the fish cause my partner was fine. It has put me off eating at this restaurant again and put me off eating fish anywhere.

I've been here a few times now and it is very much hit and miss, some visits it's outstanding and other visits it is average but the service is excellent at all times, if you decide to visit I would recommend the curry, so tasty!

Once again the only place to meet a few friends for lunch and cocktails is Calypso!!! The jerk chicken with rice and peas was heavenly this is no faux Caribbean cooking this is the real McCoy good food great cocktails
