Our u3a group booked a table for 12 yesterday. We received a friendly welcome, our orders were taken quickly and our food and drinks arrived promptly. The staff were very attentive and ensured that we had everything we needed. We enjoyed the food and it was just what we needed on a very wet day out in Whitehaven. Thank you everyone.

Been there about 4 times for lunch during my lunch break. Food very good inc sandwiches and soups and cakes. The cafe employs staff with learning disabilities who are brilliant and friendly and efficient. Was even hugged today. It’s open each week day I believe and prob weekend although not certain. Does not smell of frying and cooking area away from eating area unlike other options which don’t open Mondays. Cannot think of anything to improve- no it’s bang on! Thanks

This is your traditional old-style cafe providing very good value for money with generous portions. Very popular with locals, which is always a good recommendation. Staff was friendly and helpful. Much better than your usual over-priced coffee shop.

We went into this unassuming cafe, then found out there was nothing unassuming about it, my husband is in a wheelchair and the staff could not have been more helpful, We only went in for a coffee and ended up having a cooked breakfast, I have to say I don't like hash browns but I thought I would try one, it was lovely, our tea came with our food the toast came buttered, so many places put it on the side with a pat of cold butter. This cafe employs young people with disabilities, they are treated with respect and worked very hard. I hope anyone visiting whitehaven goes in and experiences this small but fantastic place, unfortunately we were only there for the day or would have gone back, they even had disabled access to the toilet. Certainly a wee hidden gem.

A great find for us and we will certainly be back. We had sausage bap and a bacon bap and a pot of tea each. The baps were really good: the bacon was thick and tasty. We had a pot of tea each, which we got 3 cups each from, and we were pleased to see we also got a jug of hot water - rare these days. The cafe is light and airy and pleasant to sit in and the service was good. We look forward to going again on our next visit to Whitehaven.

First visit for breakfast and it certainly didn't disappoint. The service from the seat was very warm and welcoming. Great menu choices and delicious looking cakes on show. Thr food was home made and top quality, even down to the bread which I was surprised as you wouldn't usually find many places like this making their own bread howere it was very tasty. We will definitely be back even if just for cake. We had to have some to take away and I can honestly say the caramel shortbread was one of the best I've had. Big thank you to all of the amazing staff , well done and merry Christmas 🎅 🎄

Stopped in for coffee and a scone/cake. Very nice clean place, food is good and good portion sizes. Nice range of cakes all of which looked homemade. Had a cheese scone and a lemon cream turnover bot of which were lovely. The aim of the place is to employ people with disabilities and it should be lauded for this. We always look out for community minded places....actually its about more than coffee, in a community that's a bit run down its about the spirit they create. You can always find a Costa or a Greggs but places like this are important.

Read many of the reviews by others which are generally very kind and the ambition of the cafe to employ those who may struggle to find work is laudable. However, the ambition in the cooking is not great, the scampi dish was dominated by chips with a tablespoon of peas and “runny” scampi accompanied by tartare sauce straight from the factory, water being the main ingredient much like the scampi. I could go on but won’t. If you love food this is not a place you should visit but otherwise a pleasant cafe with staff doing their best in a challenging situation.

Gorgeous spacious cafe with the friendliest, welcoming staff - in particular, Emily - I think her name is - an asset to the company and always makes friendly conversation & an extra effort in her customer service. Having been visiting Whitehaven for the day and I wanted somewhere to eat. This cafe immediately stuck out due to the fact it supports adults with learning disabilities. What a friendly bunch of people. I simply had a bowl of spicy butternut squash and sweet potato soup with a roll and a coffee. Delicious! I chose to sit outside as the sun was shining, also good to watch the people go by. It has a varied menu with fantastic looking cakes and treats, it was hard to resist. Would thoroughly recommend this cafe for the food and its community spirit.

A cafe providing good food with a social responsibility offering employment and training opportunities for adults with challenges in their learning. We stopped as a result of finding this place on Trip Advisor and were pleased to have done so. Sitting outside in a shopping street due to the inside tables being taken isn't the most exciting of locations, but you are not here for the view. Service is friendly and the food good. I have a great cheeseburger with the best friend onions I have had in along while. Chips were many different sizes that would suggest that they were home-made not out of a packet from the freezer. The may be better located places to eat in Whitehaven but make your way to King Street and Cafe West as your first choice.

Called in for lunch following a visit to the nearby Beacon Museum. It's in the main shopping thoroughfare in the centre of Whitehaven which sadly is a bit run down with many empty shops. However Cafe West's a bit of a beacon itself. Basic food but deliceous. The waiters/waitresses are mainly youngsters with learning difficulties being trained to work in the hospitality sector, but they were so friendly and full of fun, it was a real joy to be served by them. Worth supporting, and the foods pretty good too.

We where on a day trip to Whitehaven and went on to trip advisor to see where the best lunch spots where and this came up. On arrival it was busy at the counter but were met by a friendly hello and was shown to a table. When I sat down I could'nt help but notice that most of the staff appeared to have learning difficulties and when we read the menu we found that this was a training center to bridge the gap of getting employment. It stole our hearts and what a fantastic, valuable place. The menu had a good selection and our waitress came over and took our order. The ordering sysytem was simplified for both customer and employee which I thought was a wonderfull set up. Food came over and was great. Good sized portions and good value for money. The atmosphere was great and felt like I was at my regular cafe. Everyone that was there was in great spirits and found the place infectious. Its left me scratching my head why more schemes are not in place like this. If any of the staff are reading this you do a fantastic job and I will definatly revisit if im in the area.

We came to Cafe West two years ago when on holiday in the area. As we were here on holiday again we thought we'd pay a return visit. This time we had a dog and sadly they aren't dog friendly indoors. But I guess it's not mandatory and not everyone likes dogs. But if the weather is dry and mild there are two small tables outside. It's good to see the same welcoming, friendly, relaxed service. In fact I'm sure I remembered a couple of the staff. They even offered a dog water bowl which was a nice gesture. The sandwiches and flans were as good as remembered. So it's still a good place to eat as well as offering great working/training opportunities for the staff. We also visited their sister venture, the Grow West garden centre in Allerby. Same friendly service and a small but good selection of garden plants and produce (and at half the price of our local garden centre!!).

Nothing was too much trouble and I can't believe how fast the service was and no it wasn't pre or reheated it was freshly prepared. Some of us were vegetarian, one vegan and gluten free and we were all catered for amicably. What I love most about this cafe is the fact that they employ people with special needs and what a warm friendly polite bunch they were. It is also a bakery so we bought lovely cakes and mouth watering freshly baked additive free bread to take away with us. Thank you Cafe West we will certainly be visiting you again the next time we are in Whitehaven.

The food is good and plentiful. Always leave with a full belly lol. Go on give it a go.

This is a place that makes you feel better about the world. It's a very worthwhile project, they provide training and experience for people with learning difficulties, in a real working environment. Everyone is warm, welcoming. The food is excellent, and excellent value. The toasted sandwiches, in home-made bread, are brilliant.I like the way they give the trainees real responsibility, for welcoming customers and taking orders. And it's a beautiful light, airy space, very sympathetically converted.Good luck to the trainees, and congratulations to everyone involved.

Food was very good. Had a lovely sandwich & pot of peppermint tea. Homemade bread & unusual for anywhere, a jug of extra hot water with my peppermint tea.Only thing to spoil the experience was the very loud 'senior' waitress. One of the others had got someone's order wrong & she reprimanded her in a very loud voice, standing in the middle of the cafe, instead of taking her to one side. She also took another customers order by asking the person he was with - a definite case of "does he take sugar" & shouting means he'll understand more! This was all unnecessary and leaves a sour taste in my mouth.

My last review of number 11 was five stars the food was different exciting lots of different textures and delicious. What a difference the starter was half done and lazy we sent it back. The second one was the best part of the meal. The rest of the meal was all precooked nothing added no texture and totally uninspiring. This is a really nice place friendly staff and an owner who is passionate about food.Sadly the food is letting the place down.

Lovely food. I had mussels for starters, reckon they must have emptied a boat straight onto my plate. Excellent

Welcoming and great homecooked food, nothing fancy, just good, tasty wholesome food. We had two Lasagnes and a fish n chips and Scampie enjoyed by all and generous portion sizes. Family and very dog friendly. A lovely atmosphere and character. We would be very happy to return. Thanks
