The cafe systems are very poor and cutlery is not washed very well. Don’t expect your hot food to be hot by the time you have joined several queues to get drinks and desserts to go with your main meal. The Trustees should take the time from their meetings and experience the cafe for themselves and decide whether it’s good for the overall visitor experience. UK hospitality not at its best. Not even that busy but could be better organised.

There are several cafes in the museum, my partner and I were at the main one alongside the John Madejski Garden for tea and coffee and cake. Staff seemed dejected and did not seem to want to be there. No efforts to clean up tables even when staff were not busy at the checkout, customers should not have to beg for this to happen. I am hoping that hygiene is more important in food preparation for salads and main meals etc.

Oh dear. To start with the positive, what a super setting. Such lovely decor. Then, there's the subject of the beverages. We ordered two teas. We were given two cups with no saucers, some rather dented stainless steel cheap teapots, and a small amount of milk in a paper cup. At the local garden centre, we have cups & saucers, a china teapot and a china milk pouring jug. It is far from clear why V&A believe that their version is the one that best befits the setting. Time to change the provider, I sense.

I had quiche and vegetables, glazed carrots and cabbage. It was home made and delicious. My sister in law has the veg cottage pie with the sand vegetables, again delicious. Later in the afternoon egg e we had been to Diva and the Chanel exhibition, we treated ourselves to train Anna’s cakes. Lovely home made cakes. Yes it was busy, but we were served quickly and there was no waiting for a table. We loved it and would recommend.

Our experience with the Jambon Baguette was exactly the same as that of the previous reviewer. Given that the V&A is about presentation in all its forms it was an irony that the presentation of this food was appalling; a slab of meat, an overly large splodge of chutney, and two minute pieces of bread. We too had to order extra bread which was so long in arriving that we ordered it again assuming it had been forgotten... and were then charged twice. When we queried the bill the response was defensive. defiant, and edgy. Whilst some of the serving staff were pleasant the overall feeling was chaotic and unwelcoming. What a shame given the fine surroundings. We too won't be going there again.

A pleasant restaurant with attentive staff. We ordered jambon baguette. I was very disappointed when a slab of pate arrived with two tiny pieces of bread smaller than my thumb. We ordered extra bread, another very small portion arrived and I had to pay for this as a side dish. Will not return.

Thé restaurant is outsourced to Benugo and is all about the bottom line. The food itself was not the worst, the portions though: tiny tiny tiny! We left hungry and feeing somewhat robbed. I say this as a Londoner used to inflated prices, small portions and bad food.

I don't think the staff there have a clue re gluten let alone cross contamination. This is a review of the outside courtyard cafe, NOT the inside restaurant. No business would ever allowed people to 100% bring their own food, and occupy tables - but this is what happens here. Having visited the DIVA exhibition we tried to have a drink/sandwich. Leaving aside the very high prices, it's all but impossible to get a table - why - because at least 50% of the tables are occupied by people eating their own food. To repeat myself, no (PROPER) business would allow this to happen !!
