Cafe Smart in Belfast

This has been one of our favourite places to come to for a long time however in the last 6 months staff attitude has adversely impacted our experience. Perhaps they are understaffed or not managed well but feeling unwelcome on arrival is not acceptable! Nor is their dismissal of any genuine customer concerns. The price of kids meals has nearly doubled. I think it’s outrageous to charge £7.95 for 1/2 cheese toastie, a few crisps, small fruit shoot and crispy bun. Less than a year ago it was £4.95!! Why make such a steep increase on kids food when the rest of your food has only increased by the usual 10%? I wonder have other families felt the same?

One specific Staff member was rude from the get go, and continued to be rude at the till, and we were refused to speak with the manager about a complaint we had, when querying the drastic inflation of price the girl in the till said ‘no that’s not been the price’ then she reviewed the previous price and said ‘oh that’s right’ but never apologised for the telling off my mum received and convinced her she was wrong, was never offered a receipt And don’t bother to reply with a snarky reply as to why that behaviour is appropriate, we can see from your replies that you don’t give a toss for reviews when really you should take it on board and fix the attitudes

First time here, we called in for a coffee before an appointment and service staff were very polite and friendly. No seats were available when we arrived but a staff member updated us quickly to inform us that there would be tables becoming free within a few minutes. We ordered a coffee and cherry scones - which were amazing - size and taste!! Atmosphere was lovely too not loud as sometimes you find with other big retail coffee shops. Will definitely be back.

Fantastic staff, really positive and happy. Food was really tasty with huge amounts of tea given which is always a positive. Came for breakfast and my warning would be not to add anything extra on. They charge £2.50 for additionals and only give tiny portions, £2.50 for a thin singular slice of Halloumi is a bit mean. My advice would be don't alter the menu or do a build your own breakfast where for the same £2.50 you get more. Overall really positive experience and would definitely recommend!

Always excellent! Smart is one of our favourite spots on the Belmont Road. Obviously others agree as queues form at busy times, waiting for tables. Simon & Victoria (the owners) deliver a high standard of food and service. The Staff are always courteous and friendly too. All in all, I highly recommend Smart as an eatery. More than that, they also support the local community by allowing their premises to be used by various groups. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Went here for brunch today with some work friends and had a lovely time! The Batch coffee tasted so good and the pancakes were so light and fluffy (the bacon was very tasty too) 10/10 highly recommend

I had a vegetarian breakfast / brunch at the cafe this month and it was delicious, good variety of items, well cooked, hot and served promptly. I had asked for the poached eggs to be well done, not runny at all and they were perfect for me. The sausage was really tasty, in particular. My friends had Eggs Benedict and enjoyed theirs too. The staff were welcoming, friendly and helpful. It’s not in my neck of the woods but I would definitely go back to Cafe Smart if in the area again, recommended.

First time visitor as my usual was closed. Found the menu expensive and portions on the smaller side. Food was lukewarm. Child with us ordered the pancakes from the kids menu. He got a small single pancake with less than half a banana on it, £3.95. I’m sorry but that’s not value for money, the bakery down the road sells bigger pancakes for 35p. Left feeling ripped off and won’t return.

Called into the cafe today for some takeaway lunch as our office has just relocated to the local area. Really nice atmosphere, staff very friendly and food was delicious. Looking forward to coming back to sit in with friends. Fab gluten free choices.

Probably the worst experience I have ever had in a cafe , I asked for a jug of water for the table , the jug was dirty and water had stuff floating in it , the glasses were extremely dirty , sent jug of water and glasses back with waitress and she went over to where they kept the glasses put the dirty glasses back and brought me more dirty glasses with a new jug of dirty water , I sent all back again and asked for a straw for my can of coke , my partner had a coffee in a dirty cup with floaters in it , he said the coffee was not nice , food took 30+ minutes to come out , I got soup and sandwich combo , soup was carrot & coriander, and the soup was like a bowl of curry , the sandwich was bacon, Brie , and cranberry , the bacon was really tough, and the Brie tasted off, my partner had eggs Benedict and said he ate it cause he was hungry, but not one bit of it was nice, egg was undercooked and sauce wasn’t nice , staff were not nice either , avoid this place , went to binkeys just a minute walk from here and had a lovely lunch , even got clean water and clean glasses which isn’t a lot to ask for !

Cafe Smart is one of my favourite cafes in Belfast. Lovely spot for breakfast or lunch, with delicious food and lovely interior.

We waited and waited and despite 3 members of staff seen and only three tables occupied I eventually, after about 10/15 minutes had to go up to till to ask them to take my order. Apparently it’s table service! We placed the order, when food came we were asked if we needed any salt, pepper or anything else. I asked for mustard which came as I was finishing my meal! When I went to pay and checked the bill I couldn’t believe that I had been charged £1.50 for the mustard. I won’t be back!

Absolutely devine coffee and baristas ;)) Music is funky and groovy!! Really like how you can pay at the start Service quite slow but worth the wait.

Eggs Tower - beautiful. Coffee / walnut type cake - bone dry. Coffees - tasty but the cups are tiny. Brings a whole new meaning to a wee cup of coffee!! Staff - very welcoming and friendly. Asked how everything was, advised staff of the cake situation to be told "I think it was made yesterday". We had already worked that out. We were cool about it, but would have expected some sort of recompense, especially considering the staff acknowledged the likely reason for it's demise! I'm sure it was lovely - on Friday!

Called in with my friend for lunch. Cutlery was disgusting. I asked for clean cutlery and without apology for the filth was given a second set of dirty cutlery. I asked another staff member for a clean fork, I received an apology this time and given clean utensils finally. Food was mediocre at best. My friend and I had both ordered coke and when we were given glasses to use we both decided to drink from the can as the glasses were stained and dirty also. I will not be back. I would recommend trying a different cafe. There’s plenty to chose from on the same road.

I will keep this short. Excellent food and fabulous service. Family run and a much loved fixture on the highly competitive Belmont Road for many years for a reason. Loving the hatch and the ability to click and collect too. Thank you cafe smart team.

I pass this cafe regularly for a number of years but never tried it as thought looked very small and always busy!.... I’ve been missing out! After arranging to meet a friend and her baby for lunch discovered bigger than I expected with a upstairs area also. Service was really quick and staff lovely and friendly. Called into Café Smart for breakfast on recommendation of a friend and was not disappointed. Place was packed but, luckily, we got a seat pretty quickly. Great atmosphere and nicely decorated. Staff were very pleasant and welcoming. Breakfast was superb, smashed avocado on wheaten and small fry, all beautifully cooked. Family breakfast was great. Good choice of food and my granddaughter, aged 2, ordered a babychinno for herself, brilliant! Food was hot, not greasy and well presented, obviously I had the slimmers salad, not! Lovely place to enjoy food throughout the day.

Great Saturday morning breakfast ,relaxing quiet environment upstairs reading the papers. We both had a cooked breakfast with very good portions and great coffee , all served by efficient pleasant young staff. The prices very competetive.

Fui allí el domingo por la mañana después de una pesada noche de bebida la noche anterior. Jesús no podrías pedir un mejor servicio. La comida era preciosa. Bagel golpeó el lugar. Y por Dios, los pasteles de brownie y malteaser son simplemente fantásticos. Mi novia me hizo escribir la reseña porque no dejaría de contarles lo bueno que fue. Fue genial ser justo. Almorzamos aquí hoy. Comida sabrosa y una buena variedad de opciones. Teníamos un niño de 2 años con nosotros y no nos dieron un menú para niños aunque preguntamos. Ellos cayeron 2. 50 del precio cuando mencionamos esto. Restaurante bastante pequeño aunque tiene un piso de arriba que estaba cerrado hoy.

Sat from 9am until 9.20am on a Sunday morning. Tried the door at 9am and it was closed although staff were inside. Tried again at 9.05 and Watched the staff inside look out at me trying to pull the handle. . Tried again at 9.15am and door was still closed. One girl was actually cleaning the windows as I tried the handle (bearing in mind the opening time was 9am) and didn't even have the decency to come to the door and tell me as to why it hadn't opened yet. The door finally opened around 9.23am no apologies no greeting just glum staff looking on as though I had given them no other choice but to finally open the doors.

We hadn’t eaten there for a while, although inside nothing had changed. The menu is simple, but the soup was tasty and bread was fresh. It was reasonably priced. Parking on main road is time limited, so best to park in the streets nearby.

It's great to find a cafe that has several gluten-free options on it's menu. The brownie and coffee was delicious. I would really appreciate you adding gluten-free scones to your repetoir.

Pop in now and again with my wife or two sons when in area. Always consistent in fresh high quality food served efficiently with friendly staff.

Visited today with my husband and 2 grand children. The lemon and coconut scone and the raspberry jam delicious! Great americano but I did need the large. Children treated with great patience by waitress Claire and we all loved our trip to Cafe Smart. Look forward to returning for breakfast!

My friends and I went for breakfast here. I ordered scrambled egg on toasted wheaten bread with smoked salmon and capers .... it was divine!! My friends ordered Smashed avocado, Sun ripened tomatoes bacon and poached eggs on toasted wheaten bread which also looked delicious and the selection of cakes was varied too. Loose tea served in lovely teapots which make about 4 cups of tea. And Americano coffee piping hot. Sparking water and orange juice really cold just how I like them.

Went to Cafe Smart in anticipation of a lovely breakfast with my other half. The place was busy but we got a table downstairs near the counter and while perusing the menu were surprised that the member of staff making the coffee was banging the grounds out of the machine with such force that the noise was totally excessive and actually making people flinch each time she did ( with the number of times also seeming excessive). She appeared to be taking her temper out on it and when we asked the other waitress if it had to be so noisy she was equally as un-courteous. Both members of staff seemed to be totally unaware that they are in a service industry and some courtesy is expected without tantrums spoiling customers enjoying their dining experience. I have to say we will definitely not be going back!.

Popped in on a rainy afternoon. Nice decor inside although the seating just a little cramped. Pleasant, friendly service. Nice selection of fresh menu choices. My daughter had the pancakes and my wife the open prawn sandwich but the highlight was my burger. One of the best I have had for a long time - the meat itself was really tasty and perfectly seasoned. Coffee was nice and the tea served in an ornate teapot was a nice touch. Highly recommend for a light lunch and reasonably priced. Planning on heading back to try out the breakfast!!

My husband and I go here every Saturday for lunch following his night shift. We love it. I really enjoy the soup and half sandwich deal which is very tasty and there are different soups every week. It is busy but we have always found the ambience, service and food quality to be excellent and have now got to know some of the staff. I have also visited many times with friends for tea and scones (which are amazing). We live within walking distance of Belmont Road and know all the cafes well but this is my favourite. Highly recommended!

Great little coffee shop. It is small enough so that it feels intimate. Service is very good and the coffee/snacks are excellent. The only disadvantage is that it isn’t open in the evenings - otherwise, I’d be there more often!

Lunchtime - The vegetable soup was not bad at all, the coffees were fine but the regular is slightly more than a large thimble size. They did not have the German biscuits but we opted for the oatmeal biscuit which was enjoyable.

Comimos aquí dos veces en un par de días. Disfrutamos de ambas comidas muy sabrosas, aunque era una ensalada de pato y sólo luz poquito una rebanada de pan. Ensaladas muy simple sólo 2 o 3 ingredientes incluyendo lechuga.

Nice little cafe which not only serves up some good coffees and cakes but a good place to get lunch. We had lunch there and ordered some sandwiches and paninis. All very tasty and made with sourced ingredients. Would certainly come again.

Quick bite to eat, good size portions. Let down slightly with a dirty plate. No apology from the waitress, it was as if she didn't understand what we were saying. After a morning of moving house, a lovely lunch of smashed avocado and bacon on wheaten with poached eggs was a great way to refuel. My mum had French toast and brother a pancake stack. All day breakfasts all round, and all very pleased!

One of my colleagues decided we should try Café Smart for lunch as we were on the Belmont road , and are we glad we did . Excellent food and service , very pleasant staff and the atmosphere was great . Well worth a visit if you are in the vicinity .

Quick visit for lunch last Saturday and it was very nice, good food, friendly staff, value for money. I had chicken gugeons with chips and my companion had a burger with chips. Very tasty and satisfying. Will be back.

I frequently visit this café on weekends for coffee. They used to have a pianist on Sundays but unfortunately, they haven't recently. I like both of their teas and coffees. Some of the staff members are very nice and friendly.

Visited today and ordered a big fry each for my husband and myself. After a long wait for order to be taken we then waited a further 25 minutes and our teas arrived - a further 10 minutes and our frys arrived! We both knew straight away that the food appeared cold and YES it was not even slightly warm. I had to go down stairs to tell a waitress as no one was about upstairs. After a further 20 minutes two new frys arrived - and again we were disappointed!!Bacon cold, sausages warm, eggs luke warm, bread hard, beans hot but completely dried out and a burnt tomato!!NOT A SORRY FROM STAFF!!On leaving I paid in full and visited the toilet where there was NO toilet roll!!OVERALL A VERY POOR EXPERIENCE!!I AWAIT A MANAGEMENT RESPONSE!!!!

We booked Cafe Smart for a private function in the evening for my birthday! We had 40 people and were split over the two floors but despite this there was a great atmosphere and buzz! The staff were so helpful and accommodating and although we had to choose the menu before hand there was loads of choice and the food was really good!! Would highly recommend this place for a function!!

You're guaranteed a nice lunch if you visit Café Smart, with a decent menu and some great lunchtime offers. It is well worth a visit but be wary that it isn't the largest place so you may have to wait for a seat. Furthermore parking can be tricky so use the side streets nearby if you're stuck. I highly recommend it despite these difficulties, it is worth the effort!

Called into Cafe Smart for lunch on a Saturday. I had never been here before. It was quite busy but a table became available very quickly. The menu is good with plenty of choice. There is a lovely atmosphere with low volume music giving some background. We had chicken gougons and chips with sweet chilli sauce for £6.50. The food was lovely, hot and nicely presented. If you are in the area this is well worth a visit.

Very poor service - had to ask to be served after waiting 5 minutes - had to ask for table to be cleaned - knowledge menu poor - food ordered never arrived yet it was on the bill. Extremely disappointing

Honestly my favourite cafe in the Belmont area, the food is always lovely and quite quick to come! The staff are all very chatty and welcoming!

Got takeaway coffee and cakes. Hot chocolate also great for kids as it comes with marshmallows and flake

A nice cafe with a friendly feel serving fresh quality food. Good selection of home made food served in an airy atmosphere with nice art work on display. Highly recommended.

There are (at last count) 6 cafes in a 400m stretch of the belmont road - this one is the 5th best (!)Does nothing bad, but the menu is limited & service just ok. Unfortunately the competition all beat it in most areas.Go if the others are crowded.

This is a lovely cafe but can be busy. Not a bad thing at all as just shows how fab the food is!My brother and I recently had lunch here and neither of us were disappointed. I had a toastie and he had the soup and sandwich. The traybakes are fab!

My fiance and i called in for a coffee and light lunch. The staff advisedit was table service and there were more tables upstairs. The decor was very nice and our order was taken quickly by really friendly staff. I ordered a cup of the vegetable soup which was really nice, my fiance had the sausage roll. not your typical sausage roll this was all meat with a tiny but of pastry but he said it was very nice. We shared a tray bake and my fiance said his coffee was very nice. Very clean cafe, would definitely come back.

Called in out of the blue. I had the sausage roll which was amazing. My fiancée got the vegetable soup which she said was lovely. The staff were very friendly and the coffee was great. I would definitely recommend.

I have been here a few times for lunch and brunch and the quality of the food is excellent!!! The service is good and the place is spotless! Having eaten in the other cafes in the area this is my favourite and is the most reasonably priced!! I also love the quirky tea pots!

Enjoyed a very simple soup and sandwich lunch with a friend, mid week. Soup delicious, butternut squash and lentil - a generous bowl, and just a 'half sandwich' which is plenty. Served by lovely, smiling girl, and we both had a coffee to follow. My only comment would be the stairs. I have no mobility issues, but the food is carried up the steep stairs by staff, and I know this may be a factor for others visiting - simply because there are fewer seats downstairs than the upper floor, accessed by rather a steep climb. To make another small comment, staff taking payment don't seem to be able to count. Another friend got into quite a heated exchange when she queried wrong change, and I was initially short changed when I came to pay on this occasion. I gave a note plus exact change, in order that I received £15 back. It's a minor point, but it amazes me that anyone who is at the till doesn't know why this is done. It's to save YOUR change. Getting irritated with a paying customer will not get customers flocking back.

I visited Cafe Smart for brunch and coffee, and it did not disappoint!! I had poached eggs, smashed avocado, toast, bacon and sundried tomatoes. Not only was it delicious, the portions were generous and great value! The coffee was great and the lemon slice I took away was also lovely. The service was excellent and the cafe has a lovely homely vibe. I will definitely be back.

Have been here several times for morning coffee. Their scones are freshly baked with a great choice. Their berry and white chocolate are fantastic. Had their cream tea with choice of teas served in lovely cast iron teapots complete with choice of scone with fresh jam and cream worthy of a return visit and service with a smile

Pouring with rain so we needed somewhere cosy and warm and inviting. We found it inside Cafe Smart with its comfy sofas, appealing decor, awesome iron kettles, delicious cinammon scone and superb coffee.There are so many coffee shops on Belmont Rd but this has to be the best, especially at this time of the year....it has it all wrapped up with a bow on top!

We called in for coffee on a dark, dank December afternoon, excited at our first foray into the area but found staff indifferent and lacking in engagement when asked what was available to have with coffee! I was particularly disappointed with the lacklustre welcome as my husband had just arrived from Canberra the previous day and this I had hoped to impress him with a typical Northern Irish welcome? Lime cake was very good; lovely flavour & texture & good coffee! A pity the ambience was poor - unlikely to re-visit during our time in Belfast.

Mini teen and I called for a coffee and scone. . . . Orange & Cranberry. Simply delicious.We sat downstairs and enjoyed a chat. Lovely atmosphere.

Ok cafe with some great points, service being one, the only thing which really let them down was the quality of the sausages in the breakfast bap, I couldn't eat them, otherwise the bap & bacon was great, The Salmon bagel was good and the capers was a nice added touch, The staff done a great job and seamed very welcoming.We will give it a try again at some point for lunch.

Sunday brunch-french toast bacon & maple syrup -should be an all day menu addition ans alsi had lunch few times,great service fab food and ideal for coffee lunch or tea! Or all 3 you wont be disappointed
