Cafe Chameleon @ The Gough Arms in Powys

Such a beautiful place! Whenever I come down this way to visit family we always come here for lunch, it’s always delicious🤍

Really poor meal here. The tapas was incredibly overpriced for £12. Some cheap tortilla chips, greasy potatoes, greasy mushrooms, frozen guacamole and shop bought salsa with a weird tang. An incredible and unjustified markup.

I had a decaf oat cappuccino, for which I was charged £4.30. This is the most expensive cappuccino I have had, including in London and Bristol. The coffee was so weak, I complained and was given another one, which was of a reasonable quality, but I've had better ones from Pret. Also, this is really a pub rather than a café. It was noisy and the atmosphere wasn't great. I will not be going back.

Ordered their vegan valentine's cupcakes for my girlfriend. They were amazing, will definitely be coming back for seasonal treats and to try some sit down food. Staff were amazing.

Cute cafe that’s changed throughout years. Came earlier in month and think service could have been better, it was busy but the server seemed to not notice / prioritise clearing tables. We sat and the tables around us were sat with the previous customers dirty cups still on our tables. Got some nice soap and ridiculously cheap essential oils in the little shop now there. Dog friendly, service a bit slow but very busy with only couple staff on when we went so might have been a bad day. Such lovely walks near by so if you’ve got time to wait worth a stop off.

What a great find this morning 😁 We are so lucky to have found a local dog friendly Cafe servicing fabulous coffee with oat milk, a wood burning stove and locally brewed beer on tap with a takeaway option. The menu is vegan/vegetarian. If you haven't been, please do 🍻 Thanks for the great tapas guys, see you soon.

Will never come here again. Ordered our food, 45 minutes later still sitting here, while later arrivals are served. Went and checked and the girl hadn't put our order in. The attitude of the boy and girl was absolutely disgusting and unapologetic. To add insult to injury. We asked the girl to keep a portion of the crumble for my wife once we finally got our main course. Yes she said. When we were ready for it, she had just sold the last portion. When challenged, she just laughed. I asked for the owners phone number, she refused saying that they are unavailable. She then asked me to leave because of my "abuse". I gave her no abuse whatsoever. The owners really need to look at the quality of front of house staff that they employ.

Unfortunately ,our party of 5 arriving late, our time in Chameleon was shorter than we planned.Staff were great, quickly and efficiently took our orders with a very friendly and helpful manner. Food was great, 3 kind of burgers and Tagliatelli were all tasty and money well spent. Diolch.

Glass of wine after a wet dog walk

Ordered a carbonara and it wasn’t cooked with egg, pork/bacon or cheese. We got served tagliatelle with cream and pepper.. and paprika.. and cold cheese to put on top. Not remotely a carbonara.. don’t call it that. we were starving after a long journey but under normal circumstances I’d have sent this back.. Fine and not bad for something you may whip up at home in a hurry, but a bit like ordering a margarita pizza and getting cheese and tomato on toast. Nice vibe and staff otherwise.

Love this place, Vegan cakes and food are amazing, staff are efficient and polite, Kitchen staff are efficient, and the shop is amazing too 😁

Fair play, this is a little gem, 2nd visit last week and although the first was good I only had the Greek salad which is pretty difficult to get wrong (it was good mind). on the 2nd visit I had the Mexican jacket potato and the hummus from the small plates list , you could tell that it was made with some pride and that all ingredients were freshly made, not stingy with portion sizes either . Hats off to the cook/chef and I'll definitely be back again. Diolch

Lovely food & they did a lovely kids platter too. The carbonara was delicious! Even the kid was sharing it with me. Only disappointment was the burger to be honest. It was just a bun, lettuce & vegan burger patty. No sauce or cheese unless you pay extra which I thought was a bit odd especially considering the price. The sauté potatoes were lovely though.

Great to find such a lovely place doing vegan and vegetarian food in a beautiful location with interesting rail bridge nearby. Very friendly staff and amazing mojito cake.

Lovely food. Had lunch with colleagues and was too full for cake! Fresh vegetables and salad, omelette excellent. Not speedy but it was not busy and it was a week day, that might be an issue if it was busy. A relaxing, beautiful place to sit out by the river . I am planning to come again.

If it wasn't for the hour plus wait for our food things could have been better. Or if the wait would have been communicated when ordering that would have given us a choice. Guy outside with a guitar was really good

Absolutely love it here, my favourite place to eat out. The staff are very friendly and it is such a warm atmosphere inside. Perfectly situated next to a river, with plenty of tables outside and in. The food is delicious, I have never been disappointed by a meal I have had there. Reasonable prices too :)

You won’t find a better pub/cafe than this. The food is absolutely outstanding whether you’re vegan, veggie or want to take a break from meat for one meal. I live abroad and make a point to come here every time I’m home. The atmosphere is idyllic, the interior so relaxing and the friendly and welcoming staff make me at ease each time I visit. Café Chameleon is one of a kind and a life saver for the local and wider community. Always reliable and always on my list

As non Veggies we were really really impressed by flavours of our meals, so much so we brought 6 friends the next day (inc 3 veggies) who all had excellent meals. Great find, nice vibe and well worth seeking out/travelling.

We have been here for lunch 2 days in a row and all our meals were fantastic. Today there were 8 of us and everyone said what a great place it is. We would highly recommend it

A regular lunch venue for me with friends. Love the menu, plenty of fresh soups and cakes. I have had soups from red cabbage to carrot & coriander to spicy parsnip. The spicy cauliflower was particularly tasty. Served with hummus bread or cheese & pickle. Lovely seating arrangement with plenty outside too in the summer. Dog friendly and loads of vegan choices. Service is always friendly, attentive and warm. Will continue to be a regular customer. Nothing compares in the area.

We had done a tour of the Penderyn brewery and Delyth, the lovely tour guide, recommended the Chameleon. Last time I was there was in 1981 when it was the Gough Arms but I can honestly say the food is much better in 2023. Good variety and great service.

Such a lovely place by the riverside, warm, welcoming and the food which is vegetarian is fantastic, good size portions and made with care and attention.

This was a first return visit dinner the restaurant went fully vegetarian unfortunately didn't live up to previous visits! Garden Vegtable plate was a huge pile of potatoes little of anything else, vegetable Balti equally was a bowl of curried cauliflower. So disappointing when there is such a choice that could be included. Our plates were cleared away at before 8 pm and we were not even asked if we wanted desert, so we just left - I do hope this was just a one off? I'll not bother to return!

Always lovely coming here! Delicious vegan options, simple and full of veggies. Coffee is amazing and so are the cakes. Dogs welcome, and the staff love meeting the dogs too.

Found this place after searching for both vegan and coeliac friendly restaurants. Can honestly say it was well worth the visit! Really friendly staff and a laid back vibe. Food was amazing with a colour coded allergen chart and they're happy to remove items to make it gluten free. Plenty of options for the both of us as well.

Great lunch good choice of vegan and vegetarian meals and snacks. All good cooked to order but didn't have to wait too long. Sat outside, plenty of shaded seating. Very reasonable prices. Thoroughly recommend

Brilliant cafe situated by Diamond Park in Ystradgynlais, which is an ideal place to go for a walk, then call into the cafe for either just coffee and cake, or a more substantial meal. All home cooked and open in the evening as well, when alcohol is also served. Pets are welcome, and there is a lovely area outside of the cafe to sit as well, under cover.

One of my favourite places to go for excellent quality, fresh and healthy vegan food! Their menu is predominantly vegetarian being a vegetarian resteraunt, however have a number of vegan options that keep me coming back for more. I have visited here many time and not had a bad experience. They are also dog friendly and have a great outdoor seating atmosphere.

Very nice place that we discovered as a family, by chance, on our way back from the caves! Warm service and friendly atmosphere. The children really liked the chameleon coloring pages provided.

Absolutely love Cafe Chameleon. This was our first visit since covid and there have been some changes. All vegetarian/vegan menu. Table service and some changes to the lay out. The food was amazing, the staff were friendly. My favourite place to go.

All vegetarian, with lots of vegan and GF options. A rare find for this far out in the mountains, definitely worth a visit! A friendly and fun atmosphere in this little independent cafe-restaurant. Indoor and outdoor seating. Food was tasty with lots of options. Falafel and sweet pot salad, vegan carbonara, red lentil and coconut curry, Welsh rarebit- yum!

I’ve been going to this cafe ever since it had first opened and it never fails to disappoint!!

Serves vegan & vegetarian food. We had Carbonara and a jacket potato with sweet potato, feta & caramelised onions - delicious. Staff are very friendly. Will definitely be back on our next visit to this lovely part of Wales.

Popped in for lunch and so glad we did! The menu was varied, with specials too. Food was gorgeous, and a great range of beers for that crafty treat. Super friendly service made for a perfect treat, and hope to visit again soon.

Really nice food and service. We’re meat eaters, but there was no issues finding stuff we fancied eating, even with 2 young kids. Nicest garlic bread I’ve ever had, similar to the salsa and the apple cinnamon pickle. Nice pink of beer too. Thanks very much!

We booked a table for our anniversary, the vegetarian food was delicious and beautifully presented, staff were friendly and polite. We are so pleased that lovely dog friendly Cafe Chameleon is open again, we shall be back again very soon as we have missed our treat of coffee and cake during lockdown.

Brilliant to be back here after 18 months of pandemic! Love the changes (lovely grass area outside, some under cover, and a new outdoor loo!). Food delicious as ever: like the new vegetarian menu. Didn't try the cakes but they come highly recommended: we're saving them for next time. Excellent friendly service - we're always made welcome. Thanks for letting us play our instruments outside yesterday!

Amazing food. Great hospitality. My daughter said it had " opened her eyes to vegetarian food" very enjoyable lunch with friend. Normally meat eaters we all found something delicious on the fully vegetarian menu.

Nice little cafe, easy to get to. Only stayed for a drink and ice cream so didn't try the food or other services. Nice and pleasant service in a lovely quiet area.

Hidden gem. Very hygge indeed. I give the food a 10/10 and the staff were very smile and helpful. This place has an art feel and great ambience. The menu is varied and I think reasonably priced. The kind of place to pop in for coffee and find yourself there a couple of hours later. Looking forward to next time. Oh I should add that there's plenty of parking accessible cafe and ladies toilet, I didn't check to see if the gents was too sorry.

Very friendly place and great food

Popped in for a quick drink, unfortunately we got stuck behind a group of guys at the bar who insisted on sampling all the ales before purchasing keeping us waiting 15 mins. They never had the courtesy to ask us to order while they did this, nor did the staff which is why only 4 stars.

Wonderful! A former pub now turned into a cafe but still with Real Ale available. Very reasonably priced meals and lots of vegetarian and vegan options. Really friendly place. Great atmosphere.
