Superb honest food, beautiful local ingredients perfectly cooked with friendly, efficient and attentive service. It’s worth a stroll down the hill to see the spectacular bay. A homely atmosphere in a lovely location, no ‘fine dining’ pretentions, just great home-cooked food beautifully prepared from the finest local ingredients, and served with a smile. Highly recommended!

I hadn’t been to the ButnBen for a long time, the girl serving us was polite and friendly, the surroundings are quite dated but quaint. The food was disappointing I ordered the battered fish and chips, was more like a fish Dijon with a thin slice of fish inside, quite small tbh, then I ordered a blackcurrant and soda and was charged just under £5, that’s a 5000% markup wow, I still left a good tip for the waitress but when I went to pay the lady at the bar taking the money she frowned and complained that I didn’t even order any cake and coffee, not in a funny sarcastic way in an angry way and made me feel very uncomfortable, there are so many great places to eat around the area and I will happily spend my hard earned money in one of them, Won’t be back

Its been a long time since my last visit and we left feeling very underwhelmed. My husband had the fish and chips and I chose the smokie pancake, both were around £15 each. I was looking forward to the smokie pancake as I have had it previously. It was not very big and for £15 it didn't contain very much fish. The fish was also on the small size, it was more batter than fish. We each ordered large squash and soda. I was shocked to be charged £4.95 per soft drink. I did question this and was told it was correct price for a pint of lime/soda. This mark up is beyond belief! Leaving us with a £40 lunch bill for underwhelming food. Given the current economic climate people expect to get what they pay for and sadly today this was not the case.

Although the ambience is very dated - don’t be put off, the food is amazing! Very homely, plentiful , and certainly delicious! Speaking only for myself, I had the smokie pancake which hasn’t changed one bit since I first tasted it in the 1980s. That’s a good thing ! ❤️ everything served with large portions of very fresh local veg. And a charming smile! Truly Scottish home-style cooking at its very best!!

Would have loved to have given a positive review today, but couldn’t because you were closed during your advertised opening hours, ie open on Sunday from 12.00 to 14.00 hrs (website). We were looking forward to Smokey in a Pancake and left our bikes outside prior to walking along the cliffs from Arbroath. The sign on your door confirmed that you would be open then. Having driven to Arbroath and walked back, we were very disappointed to arrive at 1.15 pm to find you closed, and looking as if you hadn’t opened at all today. So we were forced to head back to find some lunch in Arbroath. I don’t want to carp too much, but I’d be pleased if you could update your website and front door notice when you know you’ll be closed. I’d like to come back sometime, but would be reluctant to do that if I wasn’t sure you’d be open.

Arrived here after a fabulous four mile coastalwalk from Victoria Park , Arbroath . It was 1.40 and the sign on the door said it closes at 2pm. We went in and the lady who we assumed was the "greeter " had her head down , I think calculating someone's bill. After a few moments we asked if we could have a table and something to eat. She told us to take a seat on a nearby couch, brought us over a couple of menus then left us to it. It would have been nice if she had smiled but I got the impression she was a little annoyed that we came in when we did. However things improve and we had a nice meal of fish chips and veg at a reasonable price with a couple of drinks. The young waitresses were very pleasant and when we paid on leaving the lady who greeted us earlier on was very pleasant. I got the impression she had had a hard day and was needing to put her feet up. Yes we would return here but perhaps it would be wise to phone ahead and book.

Reccommended by a friend with rave reviews. My smoked mackerel pate was very overly creamy and had barely any mackerel taste to it. The game pie was lacking in flavour too, the grave/sauce should've been a lot more flavoursome. The accompanying vegetables were very plain, carrots, broccoli and new potatoes. My partner fared better with his mussels starter and venison main course. They could be a great deal more adventurous, but perhaps that wouldn't suit the clientele, almost all of whom were past a certain age. The portions were generous, and the staff absolutely lovely.

It seems to be a general topic the rudeness of the staff and in my experience is just that they are not very welcoming, the place is such a success that the turnover of visitors is often so they do not care to have a good service; you go there for the food, true. Wouldn't hurt to be served with a smile, though.Food is very good. Very pricey! specially when it's in the middle of nowhere. But worth it. Seafood is incredible and served well, all piping hot and good portions. The cheese scones were very good!Mussels were incredible, oysters really yummy, steak perfect... all the sides were delicious too, the chips, salad... my only complaint will be the over cooked broccoli and carrots :(The dessert trolley is also impressive, with a lot of options, all favourites: banofee pie, clutty dumpling... A nice friendly little restaurant serving fresh, fresh, fresh seafood cooked to perfection. Don't tell anybody or we'll never get a table.

Had delicious Arbroath smokie where they were first made - Auchmithie village. Hot and buttered. That from an excellent menu, and with a very big dessert trolly to follow. All this in a quaint setting in an unspoilt village high above the harbour.

This is a very charming restaurant that serves fresh seafood locally caught. A 5 minute walk from the b&b 'Musselcrag' that we stayed in so we ate here a couple of times during our stay and each time our food was delicious.

This is a quaint converted cottage and the atmosphere within was very homely. From an excellent menu we all enjoyed it very much. There's something here for everyone and well worth the visit .The service from all the staff was excellent and friendly as well being very clean. For under £80 with a round of drinks this was money well spent and would not hesitate to come back again in the future.

Fabulous fresh food, beautifully cooked. The seafood pancake melts in your mouth. The sweet trolley is to die for. Have one or a selection of sweets. The staff are friendly and it's quite a homely atmosphere. Definitely planning to return.

Decided to visit as the chippy is near the sea harbour and has a restaurant part to sit down and enjoy your meal. Experienced possibly the worst fish and chips Ive ever had. The batter around my fish was not crispy but strange and bendy like it’s was made of plasticine. The fish inside had a weird mushy texture with a faint tinge of fairy liquid mixed with something else, disgusting. Chips fared no better they were not crispy but again bendy…seems to be a theme here. It appears they didn’t have the fryer hot enough to get crispy chips and batter or they were using really old oil….this I don’t understand. If you cook fish and chips all day you should be an expert at doing this limited cuisine..not many things to perfect or get wrong. The restaurant is poorly designed sitting near the window was an uncomfortable and sweaty experience like being in a crappy conservatory. Unpleasant. Toilets were filthy and looked like they had been decorated by. drunken 2 year old. Came away and felt unwell all day…think I consumed too much old chip fat oil. Avoid!
