Lovely little cafe although slightly eccentric as the prices seem high but you get enormous amounts of food. It was also well presented and tasted great. Tea in china cups as well.

Quaint little pub/restaurant not far from the coast with an open log fire, perfect for when the weather is bad. Staff are very welcoming, served us with a smile, and always ready to help. We didn't book and it was busy, but they still were able to accommodate us. Food was good especially the Smokie Soup. We had fish and chips, one with batter the other in oatmeal, both were nice although the batter on the fish was a little soggy. Would recommend.

My partner and I went for dinner while we were holidaying in Arbroath as we'd heard good things about it. The young girl who served us was very pleasant. The food was pretty mediocre with frozen chips! The worst thing was that the owner made conversation with every other diner who she seemed familiar with but made absolutely no conversation with us. We were made to feel rank outsiders. A little pleasantry would have been nice. Very disappointing.

We booked the But n Ben due to really great reviews and decided to try out the seafood and steak. The food itself was great, especially the seafood platter which was 10/10, however we received a frosty service from one of the waitresses who didn't seem to want to engage with us at all, and dismissed us from the beginning. When we sat down we didn't get drinks menus and when we asked for them 30 mins later we were greeted with the menu and not much else. The service from the food servers was fine, but the lady seemed to dismiss us as non locals and didn't tell us what the specials were or give us chance to order anything throughout the evening additional to our food. Most of the evening she chatted to the people next to us who had been going in their own words for around 15 years, so clearly she didn't want to engage with us much instead. The steak for a premium dish was nice but nothing special and the chips were not home made. Id recommend the food without the service.

My wife and myself went for lunch, pre-booked, the greeting was very formal, OK, we waited 15 minutes before the waitress came to our table, and then she brought the menu, and asked for the drinks order. Two different bottled ciders were ordered, this was served in the glass, which was half full, yet the bottles hold 500 ml. We had about a third of the contents, and were charged £7.80. The kedgeree for my wife consisted of a plate of coloured rice with about a table spoon of flaked fish & a boiled egg on top. Nothing like the photo on their site. My Arbroath Smokey was a mass of bones, had not been prepared properly before cooking, and the vegetables were plain boiled and tasteless. What a rip off, plain cooking, very amateurish, but their site indicates something special and exciting. The restaurant should be renamed, `Rip off n' Go`

What more can you say about the But'n'Ben - this traditional converted Fishermans cottage serves good home cooked food - the low ceilings and decor give it a cozy atmosphere. Very pleasant servers brought our food quickly and it was hot and tasty. My husband had the Kedgeree and thoroughly enjoyed it - I had Mince and Skirlie with fine skin on tatties, green beans, carrots and Broccoli. Very reasonably priced but sadly no room for pudding - next time we will though - can't wait to go back. So nice to have some traditionalism without the glitz and noise of some other places.

We were very disappointed. The lady serving us was really really rude and bigoted making comments about Englandshire. We visited with local Scottish family and they were appalled. The food was borderline inedible with one meal totally inedible. We ordered one G&T one orange juice one small wine and one pint of tap beer a bottle of water and a diet coke and the bilk for those drinks was in excess of £53! The total bill was £220 plus and we didn't have wine only one more G&T and one beer if the food had been good it wouldn't have been so bad but dreadful food coupled with the older lady who needs a personality transplant and some customer service training it was a memorable family night out for all the wrong reasons.

It was our first meal out in Scotland and for one of my sons and my Aunts the first meal out since lock down. One of my Aunts was from the area and she had been to the But'n'Ben before and had talked highly of it.The evening started with the waitress telling us what we can or cannot eat, not even in a nice way but peppered with the occasional expletive. The food eventually arrived after a very long wait, the food was at best passable pub food with my vegan son's meal being inedible. My youngest son ending up eating as he said he liked it as it tasted just like the pasta he gets at the school canteen! As clearly we were from England further derogatory remarks were made about the English at the end of the meal. Finally to add insult to injury the bill came to over £30 per head(of course they were not participating in the Eat out to Help out scheme) of which the drinks bill for 1 round of drinks came to over £50 when there were only 5 alcoholic drinks. We endured the insults and the meal only because my Aunts had thought highly of the place but a few days later when we discussed the experience there, they said they were surprised I did not say something at the time as they felt very uncomfortable. It may have been good at one time however it should rename itself as But'n'Been

But'n'Ben... Where to start. As a family of five who'd headed up to Scotland for a brief summer break from the chaos of recent months, we thought a trip to a 'traditional' Scottish restaurant would be both a pleasant and long-awaited treat for us all... How WRONG we were! The rigmarole began as soon as we stepped foot into the time-worn cottage come restaurant - We were met by an aged blonde waitress who was insolate and derogatory from the get-go and remained so throughout our meal. The lady insisted on dictating what each of us could and couldn't order - to the extent that my youngest brother was being told by this waitress "you don't want that (chips)... they're sh*t". Not only was this waitress unpleasant throughout our evening, but the food she served was also reminiscent of that churned out in my school canteen... Salty and smothered in grease. After enduring what had to be my worst ever experience eating out, we were met with the bill... We were charged over £60 for drinks alone yet we hadn't exactly been in the mood for drinking given the offensive and unpleasant nature of those serving us throughout the evening. Nonetheless, we paid the full amount and left having been condemned as "englandshires" by the waitress who'd served us. As a side, the only reason we didn't walk out and find somewhere a little more competent and welcoming to eat, such as the nearest McDonalds or KFC, was because we were accompanied by our elderly aunties who lived locally and thought quite highly of But'n'Ben from past experiences. It was because of their company, we chose to endure and tolerate the blatant rudeness of those serving us as opposed to calling the ill-mannered waitress out and consequently upsetting our aunts. Our Aunts, who later that evening said they'd never received such poor service and rudeness until this occasion... Make of that what you will.To conclude, I wouldn't recommend the But'n'Ben to anyone in search of a pleasant evening out with their loved ones, however, if what you're after is appalling service in what is a decrepit diner, then head on in!

Pleasant little restaurant in country setting. we got a seat near draughty door despite empty restaurant, probably due to our late booking and dining popular with locals.Seats are uncomfortable due to virus, no cushions and sore on my back but given cushion when requested.Soup disappointing, more potato than haddock. We got it wrong, looking for lobster not available on a Thursday weekends only. I should have asked before booking.Decent menu, wine list not offered so do not know if it is good and value for money.Haddock I had was excellent, turbot my wife had was good too, vegetable portions too much for us but were good.Would I return? I had already pre warned my friend about this before we arrived and as soon as we walked in we were berated by her for leaving the door open. Not a nice way to welcome your customers. We had ordered mussels to start but very small. I pointed this out to waitress and she said she would tell the chef. Poached egg on haddock overcooked. Very expensive for basic food .

We were out last night (7 Feb 20) for a late tea/early supper and a shortish jaunt in my pal's big new hybrid motor vehicle. The sultry close-knit former fishing village of Auchmithie, on the cold North Sea Coast, above Arbroath, awaited our arrival ... we being a boy/girl foursome of experienced, hungry and fussy foodies."Shut that door," Larry-Grayson-like, cried our good-humoured hostess as we entered her deliciously endearing restaurant which was quiet that Friday, unusually, but due to the time of year. Prawn Cocktail for starter was familiar but famous and fine, two Five Star Smokey Pancake Platters, a Crabmeat Concoction and a replete Piping-hot Pot of Haddock and Prawns proved perfect for our mains. Two lovely desserts were shared by all four and this far-from-frugal repast was duly washed down with a pleasant bottle of Prosecco ... Well, we could not have been more surely satisfied with both excellent cheffing and waitressing. With the snug warmth of The House's hearth itself, the village visitors' victory over paid-parking promoters ... and the sheer value for money in the fine feast found that evening, our excursion proved a serendipitous success.

Love Bellies. The folk night on a Tuesday is always worth a visit for. Staff are incredibly welcoming and friendly and atmosphere always laid back and relaxed. Food tasty and really reasonably priced too.

Stopped here for lunch on Saturday afternoon. We drove past it twice as it’s set back from the road and we missed the sign outside. The staff were welcoming and friendly. I ordered the salmon from the specials and my husband had them steak and ale pie. Both were delicious and really good portions.

Packed on the day of our visit and we had probably the last table. Food was excellent quality and service was very friendly if s we’d bit haphazard at times. Part of meal arrived late and incomplete but overall very good
