The food is expensive, so I decided to get by with a milkshake. Unfortunately this was overpriced and also pretty insipid. Would I make an effort to visit again? Sadly, no. I understand that business rents and costs are high in this location, but...

I love bread and lard island! The staff are always friendly, the cinnamon buns are legendary, coffee is delicious and we’ve been for the small plates on a Friday night tonight and were so impressed. The atmosphere was lovely and we all said the food was delicious. One of my favourite regular spots, no matter what time of day 🤍

A nice enough looking cafe..... but reading at the reviews below I am not alone in observing: --- This cafe does not understand what a poached egg is --- I ordered a Cappuccino (£3.80) and Smashed Avocado & Poached Eggs on Sourdough Toast (£12.50). This is at what I would consider the steep end of pricing for a cafe brunch. So, it needed to be good. The Cappuccino arrived and was relatively meagre in size, not great value. The Avocado/Eggs arrived and 'looked' beautiful. On cutting into the poached eggs they were solid through - no ooze. I immediately took this back to the counter and said "I'm sorry, but at £12.50 I'm not happy being served solid poached eggs". I was then utterly bemused when the waiter came back 1 minute later and said "I'm sorry but the chef has had a look at them and said that is how we serve poached eggs". Astounded. A solid poached egg is a boiled egg. The chef then came out to tell me that this was indeed how they "served poached eggs". I was flabbergasted that these people are in the brunch/cafe game and think that this is acceptable. In credit to the cafe, I was given a full refund for the food. However, I was stunned that there was no effort made to simply recook the dish and actually make a poached egg. To refuse and state 'this is what a poached egg is' when you're charging £12.50 is utter madness. It It also speaks volumes that I am not the first customer to have the same experience. I took my refund and went to Cote Brasserie in West Bridgford. There I ordered a Cappuccino (£3.50 - and larger), Smashed Avocado and Poached Eggs on Sourdough Toast (£11.50 - cooked to perfection, ooze intact).

I’ve been a regular at Bread and Lard Island since it first opened, and every time I have eaten here it’s been absolutely perfect 👌 The culinary skills of both Ben and Sam in the kitchen, paired with fresh and quality ingredients, rival some of the best restaurants I’ve eaten at, and that’s not an over exaggeration. Each dish has its own unique layer of flavours that stand out as well as complement each other perfectly, and all priced very reasonably. The Sunday roast is one of the stand out dishes at Bread and Lard. For portion size, quality, and value for money it can not be beaten. Would 100% recommend for lunch during the week, a nice Friday evening meal, Sunday roast, or just a drink and slice of cake at any time. Also a great option for takeaway if you’re in a rush.

Every time that I have eaten at Bread & Lard it has been wonderful. I’ve never had a better Sunday dinner, the breakfast and lunch options are varied and always delicious and the cakes are lovely. The breakfast curry is always a favourite, whenever it appears on the menu. Everything is freshly prepared by them, which I really appreciate, it is beautifully cooked and high quality. B&L don’t take the shortcuts you that you see in chain, or other local cafes and restaurants. The staff are warm and friendly each time I visit. I love this place. Each time that I leave I am always full of food and joy.

Ridiculously over priced cheese plate. Two varieties of cheese thin wedges a single piece of celery and 6 small water biscuits £11!!! Yes eleven pounds! Had to ask for some cutlery and a little dish of butter. I'll grant the cheese was tasty but come on £11 is taking the proverbial isn't it? Left a 'sour taste'... Good job it was sunny so we sat outside to eat our £22 worth of 4 slices of cheese. Really shocked at this blatant rip off.

Found hairs in food when mentioned to waitress she spoke to owner who said there's nothing he can do, when I spoke to the owner he was very rude using the fxxx word several times and asked us to leave. Saying his having a hard day , sorry this is no apology for the way we were treated. All we was asking for was an apology not rude remarks. This has now made me go to the food hygiene service as Also noticed girls cleaning floors/tables and then serving food without washing hands. This is no way to run a business,it was the worst cafe I've been in, which is a real shame as it could have had a 5star review if treat correctly by the owner (you do not swear to customers) This place should be shut down 24hrs on and still no apology Still waiting for a reply, this just shows that the owner does not care about his customers, all he wants is money from people.

We have been coming to bread and lard since they opened. This is such a great space with amazing atmosphere, delicious food and big selection of sweat treats and nice drinks. The food is always on the top level with few classics on the menu and some seasonal options. On Sunday they also serve the most amazing Sunday Roast. On the photos attached we are having a classic ciabatta with eggs, bacon and homemade tomato sauce and the most tasty toasts with smashed tomatoes, basil and olive oil and delicious poached eggs. I also had “burnt honey tart” - can’t stop thinking about it. It’s a great space in the neighbourhood, it brings joy and fun to be around. Good quality, local ingredients prepared with love. Definitely recommend for breakfast, brunches, Sunday roasts, nice wine, beer, coffee or something sweet. It is also very dog friendly which is amazing. Our pooch loves hanging there with us.

Ordered the avocado on toast, Received avocado that had gone bad, had rotten bits with holes in - quite clearly inedible. Requested another to be made, and got a cold, uncaring reply and no apology. The new one also had bad avocado, i found this out after eating half of it. Rotten avocado can be very dangerous and should be checked before served to people! Very disappointed.

Bread and Lard Island really is a special treat and we've been coming here a lot, especially recently. It's been said before, but this is a real gem that captures the laid back, fun with seriously good food. Whether a midweek pop in for a coffee, it's the weekend's that really set the scene. Simply the best Sunday roast around. Ben and Sam are exceptional chefs that provide delicious, high quality food, sourced with knowledge and care, together with the front of house team, make this really special! Priced a little more than average, but with taste and flavours that boom worth every penny. With laid back music, they really capture the eating out experience of the great cities of New Zealand and Australia. We shared a table for four with our family visiting from NZ and it's the first thing they said. They felt at home and loved everything. A big hit and that's what Nottingham has got with Bread and Lard. The welcome and customer service is exceptional. The menu is brilliant and easy to read, and the craft - thought that goes into everything, whether meals, cakes and lovely sourced beers-wine is exceptional. Simply a fab place to eat out. Highly recommend. Just go!

Having arrived at a lovely looking café, we sat down and were welcomed by the owner showing a customer out almost manhandling them out of the building. We ordered our meal I had fried eggs and hashbrowns, well I think they were a kind of hash brown. My partner had poached egg on toast. We received our mail but no coffees that we had ordered my partners poached egg on toast were hard. I took these back and asked for some new ones, then when I started my breakfast, my fried eggs were completely hard so I took these back. After waiting a further 15 minutes our replaced meals arrived But my partners poached eggs were still hard. We asked for a refund on this meal and we were offered £5 for the egg element of the poached on toast. My partner was really hungry. We did say that we wanted to eat the meal but weren’t prepared to pay for it eventually I had to intervene and said please refund us for the whole meal which begrudgingly did. Really sorry for the waitress as I’m sure she reported to the boss who had previously shown customers out of the café. A couple sat next to us and had fried egg and bacon Sandwich, the lady had avocados on toast with poached egg. I noticed that both the gentleman fried eggs yokes and the ladies poached eggs yokes were hard. Such a shame because it was a lovely place but from the minute we got there we felt uneasy and it really took a lot to complain as we didn’t want the same kind of treatment as the previous customer had had. So if you like hard fried and poached eggs, then this is the place to go. We don’t, so we won’t be returning

A stunning addition to the foodie vibe that is in Lady Bay. Beautiful food albeit a tad pricey. Wonderful staff who went above and beyond to serve me. Gorgeous cute palm tree tea spoons which are so stylish. This eatery is like something you'd find in London or Brighton. I met the family yesterday after 3 years . The music was so loud I couldn't hear our conversation, dance music on a Sunday morning . I asked if they could turn it down, which they did for about 2 minutes, then it was turned up to the same volume . Such a shame and a complete disregard for customers . I enjoyed a coffee and walnut cake until I pulled out a very long hair from it . The cake was replaced but I then had a very short hair , which I removed and said nothing . Enough . So thanks for not deducting anything from our bill and being so rude and to not turn the music down slightly . Run by 22+ year olds who did apologise but I felt it wasn't really meant . What a shame to a lovely venue .

I’ve had the absolute pleasure of being a regular at Bread and Lard Island, a gem located in West Bridgford, Nottingham. It’s not just a bar and cafe to me; it’s a place that feels like home, thanks to the warmth and care of the owner, the culinary magic of the chef, and the entire team who’ve consistently made every visit memorable. Every meal here is a testament to their commitment to quality and freshness. The kitchen team works wonders with fresh ingredients, ensuring that every dish not only tastes fantastic but also showcases their dedication to authentic culinary experiences. It’s clear they don’t cut corners, and it shines through in the flavours. What truly sets Bread and Lard Island apart, though, is the atmosphere. It’s more than just a place to eat and drink; it’s a cultural hub that pulses with happy vibes and genuine community spirit. It’s where family and friends come together, where new connections are made, and where every visit feels like a celebration of what makes West Bridgford special. I cannot recommend Bread and Lard Island enough. Whether you’re a local or just passing through, make it a point to stop by. You’ll be greeted with open arms, incredible food, and an experience that will keep you coming back for more. Thank you to everyone at Bread and Lard Island for always going above and beyond. Pretty buzzy little local place, gets very busy at weekends, pleasant to sit in and lovely outside when the sun is shining. Staff are friendly and service great, good flat whites and cappuccinos abound and the food is great with a fresh and mostly healthy focus, portions are generous and everything is tasty, proces have been ratcheted up over the last few weeks which knocks a star off what would otherwise be 5*, starting to get to the top end of what I'd pay for, otherwise highly recommended and now licensed so you can enjoy a drink with the food. Watch for sometimes slightly random and extended closing times.
