Bouchon in Northumberland

It is very nice in this day and age to find a restaurant serving top quality food and serving it like a restaurant should. Too often these days a restaurant experience is like street food wagons. This is refined food served nicely. Our meal was superb from start to finish, classic french dishes just done better, everything was quality, tasty, nicely presented and decent value. Wine menu was good, we didn't try the house wine but I'm sure it would be decent and unfortunately we were just a bit too early for the Beaujolais being released in November. Must remember for next year to come after the 21st. Service was very good, wine poured properly, real napkins, table dressed nicely, clean and decorated well. Atmosphere was just right. Btw, steak tartare was perfect. Thank you all. I aim to return soon.

Fabulous French restaurant, food is fantastic, service is sublime and the atmosphere is authentic. Love the steak but so many other dishes are worth trying. Confit duck was delightful. The cannelle bordeaux dessert is so tasty and the rum baba is out of this world.

Despite the food being a little slow, it was well worth waiting for! We were extremely impressed with the presentation of our food and the flavour combinations - clean plates all round! We would definitely recommend a visit.

Fabulous meal to celebrate our Golden Wedding Anniversary! This restaurant has many great reviews and in our opinion it is well deserved of them. The restaurant is cosy and the staff very pleasant and attentive (but not too much!). My beef dish and my wife’s trout were beautifully cooked and our dessert (shared), raspberry soufflé with honey and chocolate ice cream was to die for! Not cheap, our 3 course meal with wine/water, was over a hundred pounds but was worth every penny! Highly recommended.

Came here for a meal a few days ago (midweek)....we didn't book and were offered a table on the terrace...how amazing...food was absolutely delicious and couldn't fault anything, what a lovely time we had and will always remember our time here.. it's our number one place to come back to when we return to Hexham...I think we'll book next time just to guarantee a table.

Gorgeous French food, it was absolutely delicious. There was a lovely view of the Abbey whilst we enjoyed the beautifully made food. The duck was cooked to perfection, and melted off the bone. The staff were very friendly. The atmosphere was great, and it was spotlessly clean. Overall, it was a very enjoyable experience, and I would recommend here to anyone visiting Hexham.

This is a little gem of a restaurant. Staff were lovely and the dining room was really nicely decorated. I had the tuna starter and sea trout main. My wife had the halibut. These were all beautifully cooked and presented. The prices were really reasonable and portions good. I would recommend eating here if you’re in the area. Superb.

We dined here with our two friends visiting from Sussex. The whole experience was outstanding with excellent food, service and atmosphere. This restaurant has provided consistently good food and service with a French emphasis over many years. Hexham is very fortunate to have had such a good restaurant over many years.

Feel like I could go overboard with superlatives! Absolutely excellent all round - choice of menu, service, friendliness of staff, quality of food.We live two and a half hours away and came to Hexham to see Vindolanda. The answer to the question ‘would I come back here?’ Knowing we could eat here, then it’s a definite ‘Yes’!

We visited for lunch yesterday as it was our wedding anniversary and wanted to do something a bit special (we eat out a lot!). We did the lunch special (2 courses £23, 3 courses £25) so it wasn't overly expensive. I had a bottle of lager and my wife had a fruit juice and we were offered some tap water which we accepted. The main disappointment was my main which was the pork belly. Small portion as you'd expect in a special but hardly any meat at all, just a very nicely presented piece of pork fat! Starters and sweets were nice but again, very small portions. On settling our bill (which we had to do at the desk as we couldn't catch the eye of the very nice but terribly overworked waitress) we left a cash tip only to discover later that they had added a 20% service charge! We live and learn! We'll tick it off our list but won't be back.

This is by far the best food, I've had recently. I travel extensively throughout Europe and have had great food but this gem is on my doorstep. Staff were friendly and a great peaceful atmosphere. Would recommend to anyone who loves French cuisine cooked properly.

Delightful lunch. The lamb dish was excellent great service and nice ambience. Good location on the edge of the business Central city so you can easily scroll through the lawn bowling club and park there after.

We visited for the set menu on a Saturday evening. The restaurant was busy enough to have atmosphere without seeming chaotic. All the dishes were beautifully cooked and presented. We had super service from the lovely Milly and will definitely return.

Cut above other restaurants for food quality and service. And they show the same pride in making their coffee as they do their food. If this was only a cafe I'd give it 5 stars on that basis alone. This place proves it is possible to serve a strong, rich americano with a golden crema, albeit not in a half litre bucket, that tastes thoroughly enjoyable. Take note cafes of the UK, some customers prefer quality over quantity.

From a promising start -seated on the First Floor and open view -it was a declining experience Service -we sat before a table adjacent -we were a couple -the adjacent table c5 -we waited a long time to get our initial drinks -water -whilst the adjacent table were served champagne --and that was a disaster -the cork smashed a glass -and could easily have injured/blinded a customer I suggested to my partner well give it 5 mins and we are leaving Finally got our water Starter/Main orders taken -I specifically asked about the quality of the Rib Eye steak ref TASTE and was advised it was the best-so I ordered it Scallops -£15 starter --came --3 scallops medium size and overcooked Steak arrived -looked OK but TASTELESS -advised the waiter -and to his credit he offered a replacement choice -but I was half way into my meal and declined Bill £100 --inc £9.20 discretionary service --I declined due to the misinformation /advice given ref the Steak CONCLUSION Bouchon trades on its ''French' experience --I'm afraid it is nothing more than a pretentious mediocre overpriced venue

Long established French bistro in Hexham . Tremendous food with old favourites and updated options, good service, super wine list including by the glass - unbeatable value

In terms of quality, value and atmosphere, this is by far our favourite restaurant in Northumberland. The food is always excellent - we have visited 4 times now and the food has been perfect every time - the scallops are especially good. The staff are so accommodating and friendly, we’ve been served by Millie mostly and she can’t do enough. I’d particularly like to highlight the fact that we mentioned that the brand of water being used contained fluoride and there were better options available; the next time we visited they had actually changed the water to the brand we suggested! We couldn’t believe it, that small touch really made us feel at home and we are so appreciative (usually because we have had the odd look for pointing those sort of things out). In summary, this restaurant is 10 out of 10 and we can’t wait to go back.

It was a fabulous dining experience as a treat for my 75th birthday. Duck was deliciously cooked and halibut was amazing.

First visit, but definatley won't be the last. Celebrating daughters 21st and could not have chosen a better venue. All food exceptional, service outstanding, atmosphere relaxed and friendly. Very good value for money for the quality of the food.

Absolutely first class meal tonight, a birthday treat. Duck was delicious, halibut was cooked to perfection.

Absolutely fantastic food! Cannot fault them on anything - the mussels and lamb were the best we've ever had and the ambience was very pleasant. The staff were so so lovely as well, especially Millie! We definitely will be back to try the rest of the menu :)

I had a very strange lunch of steak frites which looked more like the leftovers and was not very pleasant to eat

Couldn't fault them, fantastic food and service. 2 tables rebooked for a second night when they finished eating,the 2/3 course set menu looked good price will be back to try that!

This restaurant never fails to delight! An excellent menu which offers great pescatarian and vegetarian options. Whenever we come to Hexham, we make a point of reserving a table here.

This is a beautiful spot for lunch in Hexham. The service was great and the food was lovely, we had the set lunch menu which was very reasonable for the quality of the food. The wine selection was definitely a highlight for me as they had some excellent French wines from some of my favorite regions. Worth a visit!

Our favourite French restaurant. Always first place we book when we're visiting Northumberland. Amazing food, wine and service. Love that the prix fixe menu has different choices to the a la carte, but both are delicious and high quality.

Forth visit in a year. Superb food and service as usual. Genuine French atmosphere with knowledgeable input from Greg on wine pairings. We are very lucky to have this very special place in Northumberland. So much better an experience than the local Michelin stars.

Not all great, not all bad. Waited far too long for a drink, wine served after starters arrived. Had to repeat requests for ice/butter etc. My starter was not anything other than average, but main course was absolutely delicious. I found it just a little pretentious.

Highly rated by some, but we can't see why. Arrived at 7pm on a Tuesday without a reservation. Plenty of tables were free, but we were seated at probably the smallest table in the place, next to the door for the toilets. Other diners were seated nearer the front of the restaurant, had their coats taken, wine glasses topped up. Such pleasantries were not offered to us because....we were obviously in the naughty corner. Onion soup starter was average. My wife's vegetarian choice was effectively mashed potato topped vegetables, she didn't eat it & we didn't pay for it. My pork was ok. On getting the bill, we asked why we were seated by the toilets. Apparently, all the other tables were booked for 8.30 & we left at 8.15pm... The maitre d was very abrupt & lacking any charm. No, we don't recommend it.

A little piece of France in Hexham. I’d had a number of friends taking about this restaurant and the food so, I inevitably had to go! Bookings only as it gets busy and now Ive been, I understand. The place is well presented, the staff are attentive and the food is…… outstanding!! If you haven’t been, book and that’s my sincere review because I’m going back.

Absolutely delicious!!! The choice of starters and mains is huge and very traditional. I’m French and I can tell you, this was authentic delicious food. They even have quenelles! So hard to find in the UK and they were excellent. Gutted we live too far to come every month!

Excellent food and service from Jordan. The owner is arrogant and needs to listen. When he became very pedantic about how i wanted my steak cooked, I didn't expect it to arrive cooked medium when asked for it rare.

A great restaurant serving French classics. Very comfortable and stylish dining rooms: perfect for a cosy dinner on a cold and dark winter night (though also great for a slightly boozy afternoon lunch...). Good wine list with a decent variety served in 500cl carafes.

Haven’t been for as few years. It’s not just as good, but better. Simple, yet sophisticated French food. What a delight. Charming staff and lovely atmosphere. Just sorry we’re not local anymore.

I first came here 13 years ago and it’s nice to see that standard have been maintained. I had le douzaine and a confit, with notably good French 65 and Pinot Blanc, a reasonable Bourgogne and a good Montbazillac.

Another wonderful evening at Bouchon. The staff are lovely, the atmosphere fantastic and the food is really special. Bouchon is our “go to” place for special family occasions but on our latest visit there were just two of us and we had a great evening. A special “shout out”for Jordan who is fantastic. Thank you Greg for another great meal.

Could not have had a better experience from Bouchon! The staff, the owner, the food, the atmosphere was just fantastic and we could not fault! My husband chose to go from the A la Carte menu and I chose the Christmas Fayre menu! The turkey cordon bleu was one of the best dishes I have had and it was accompanied with a varied side of roasted vegetables! This was great and was very tempted to ask the owner for the recipe. My husband went for scallops to start and venison for a main. He said there is no where in hexham which could top this meal. We were sat upstairs and served by an amazing waiter and waitress who made us feel at home as soon as we had arrived, with smiles on their faces but yet a very professional experience especially on a busy night. Big shoutout to them both, absolutely amazing! The owner of bouchon was also fabulous aswell and was very kind to ourselfs and the kids- you could tell that he really cared! And to top it off, the kids and the husband had some amazing desserts- tarte tatin, coupe bouchon and ice cream & sorbets which were great! I ended the night with an amazing espresso martini from the bar- which was absolutely gorgeous! Cannot recommend bouchon enough! Best restaurant in hexham and we are very lucky to have it.

Dinner for four in a full restaurant, not cheap but not really expensive for what was expected. Service excellent and food generally good BUT I ordered the most expensive item on the menu, goose breast as I had never had it before; sadly it was so tough as to be inedible. I brought this to the attention of the waiter and left the meat largely untouched. My experience was therefore severely compromised when there was no offer to remove the dish from the bill, or comp as dessert (which costs very little) or even get an apology from the manager - and the service charge was still added to the bill (I left it on as I didn’t want to cause a scene for my companions)! So the moral is, it should be a reasonable experience but if it goes wrong don’t expect the manager to give a damn!

The food is okay but small portions and very overpriced. It can be a bit hit-and-miss but meat options are typically good. The main issue, however, is the manager who can present as very rude and arrogant, especially if customers feel there’s something that could be improved on. He sees this, always, as illegitimate fault-finding for some odd reason, as opposed to a way of improving service. I’m another customer who won’t return due to his awful attitude. ‘The Natural Grocer’ in Hexham offers a far friendlier, excellent quality eating establishment as a recommended alternative where the owner clearly wants you to enjoy your visit of which he is appreciative.

Delicious and hearty french cooking. We had the Dec Christmas menu which was reasonable value for the food on offer, and offered good variety. The confit duck was the pick of my dishes.

Impeccable food and great service. I enjoyed a Christmas set meal with my French student group today at Le Bouchon. Greg and the team were welcoming and friendly, efficient service and of course the food was delicious! See you same time next year. MERCI ET JOYEUX NOËL !

Lovely food and quick friendly service.

Had the festive meal of turkey with roast vegetables. No mash or yorkshire puddings and all the veg was diced. Not a good presentation. If you want a traditional Christmas turkey dinner go to a pub. French restaurants can't do Christmas dinner well. On to the pudding. I had the Coupe Bouchon with prune ice cream. The waitress told me it was like an ice cream sundae so I was looking forward to it. I was expecting the prune ice cream to look smooth and taste like prunes. What was served was a very small bowl of whole prunes, about 5, topped with cream and very little vanilla ice cream. Very disappointing. Will not be dining here again.

A beautiful little restaurant, from the second you walk in you can tell what a high standard they have! The food was amazing and I highly recommend a visit! The bramble cocktail is lovely too!

Mrs H and I had scallops and French onion soup to start, both of which were spot on and came with a little warm home-baked petit pain. Moules frites twice for mains, well presented in a dish that contains a mesh partition that allows for chip dipping in the moules liqueur. Everything was presented beautifully, seasoned well, arrived promptly and piping hot. Service was snappy yet not overly formal, drinks were marvellous too (very good Old Fashioned). A delightful little slice of France transplanted to the North East. 10/10.

We had an excellent meal at this restaurant, the good wine,good and service were excellent with a lovely ambience, everything was reasonably priced and superbly presented, the staff are attentive without being overbearing. I just wish we could pack this restaurant up and transport it to our home city of Bristol. Thank you for a lovely evening.

A lovely French Bistro with good menu both a la carte and fixed. Fixed exceptionally reasonable. Evening meal for two w drinks came in at £77. For the quality well worth it. Will be back, again!

Wonderful restaurant and great food and service

Another lovely dinner here with the usual great service from Greg and the team. We usually opt for the Early Bird menu which is such good value but as it was a special birthday celebration, we chose from the A La Carte. My daughter’s scallops and rib eye were really good and my soufflé was light and super cheesy!! For main I chose the duck confit which was rich and delicious and a generous size. Pudding was crème brûlée to share. The atmosphere at Bouchon is always welcoming and relaxed and the food reliably good. There’s a reason it’s one of our favourite restaurants 😊

Food very good, but the manager was clearly in a bad mood and cared little for hospitality. Waited an age for a menu, to be told they had to photocopy some. When then arrived, he gave us about a minute to decide. When we asked for more time, he went away and took an age to return. When asked if he could do a non-alcoholic sauce, he gave a brusque 'no' and walked away. The pudding tasted burnt and bitter. When I told him this, he looked at me in disbelief, like I was dirt on his shoe. My dining partner agreed that it tasted burnt. I have had enough tarte tatin in my time to know if it is burnt on the base. In any event, the attitude he took made the evening an unpleasant experience and we won't be returning. He was the manager and should have been setting the tone.

Nice lunch but disappointed by a very chewy rib-eye steak. At over £25 for the steak we expected something better. The explanation that they had received other similar complaints did not assuage our disappointment. The lamb dish was very nice and the vegetables, sauces and desserts were also good. But at £50 a head we felt the rubbery steak spoilt the whole meal. Ribeye steaks should be dry-aged for at least 35 days to allow the connective tissues to reduce and achieve full flavour. This steak was not hung for long and consequently it was chewy and lacked flavour - this is a basic error by the chef. The waiters excuse that they had supply problems is not acceptable when we paid £50 a head for this substandard meal.

All round great experience. The restaurant was very busy but the staff where on it. It runs like a well oiled machine. My scallops where good well cooked but a bit over salty, I dont eat much salt so its personal taste. I asked on my main course for no added salt which was perfect.

First visit to this restaurant, really glad we booked as every table was taken. The food and service was excellent, the charcuterie board to start was large enough to share between two. The ribeye steak and the duck were both excellent. A definite recommend if you are visiting the area.

Food was up there, steak over done but still excellent, really well priced I thought. Service was friendly but pretty laborious. Laminate peeling off the table wasn't fitting and just a bit annoying.

Bouchon is quietly excellent. The menu provides a good selection of French dishes to choose from. The cooking really is in character - no pretense here. The prix fixe is good value as are the carafes of wine. I recommend booking. Bouchon was full on a Tuesday evening with several tables doing two parties. A lovely atmosphere and good service.

We were a party of 7 overall the food was excellent, however my brother and I both had the most expensive steak on the menu, Ribeye, both were fatty and chewed!! Not what you expect for nearly £26 each.
