Blue Nile Cafe in Greenwich

The Blue Nile is a gem in the heart of Woolwich. The food is outstanding only to be outmatched by the fantastic service.

We had the meat and vegetable bebiaynetu. The vegetarian dishes were really good. They made a special effort to make my mum's birthday meal a good one, with dessert and candles at the end. Very affordable, nice vibe and good customer service. Sad they had run out of tiramisu early on a Saturday night but otherwise everything was great. Woolwich might seem far but it's right next to the station and you can park at the big Tesco next door so it's worth coming to.

Delicious food for a great price. The service was wonderful, the couple running the restaurant are warm and generous. It was our second time and we will be back again!

Fabulous and restored my faith in dining out in London. The owner and his wife were friendly, attentive and welcoming. The food was excellent and tasty. The old butchers shop decor was slick and the Eritrean maps and pictures on the walls added a sense of the unusual. We had the injera and vegetable stews which hit the spot. Wine £12 a bottle and finished with biscottis and vincento. £40 for the two. Very much worth supporting if you live locally and worth hopping on the DLR if you don’t.

The owner was so freindly and guided us thru the menu which is great for vegies and vegans as well as meat options , loved the atmosphere and the old shop itself, great little find loved it will return!

A pleasure to visit, as always. Outstanding food and atmosphere. If you still haven’t been, you are missing out.

El propietario y su compañero son atentos, serviciales e informativos. Ahora sé que la palabra café 'proviene de la región etíope de Kaffa. Éramos una fiesta de seis explicamos cuántos eran vegetarianos y el gerente nos trajo los platos apropiados. ¡Estábamos realmente llenos y, sin embargo, solo pudimos exprimir un poco de tiramisú! Una joya culinaria ubicada entre las chozas de pollo de Woolwich y un paseo muy corto desde Woolwich Arsenal BR o DLR, por lo que vale la pena una expedición desde otras partes de Londres. amazing food, lovely atmosphere and the owner is lovely. I have eaten here many times with colleagues and friends, and i would go back in an instant. The food is all home made, freshly cooked and large portions. The owners cannot do enough for you.100 per cent recommend.

This is an incredible restaurant, not simply about the food, but also the whole experience!

It was such a treat to visit Blue Nile. The service was impeccable - we were treated and greeted like friends. The food is tasty, served with genuine warmth and the beers are cheap. What's not to love? The restaurant is a former sausage shop if my memory serves me right? It has lots of reclaimed, original features. It's a cool, contemporary find that is much needed in Woolwich.

Outstanding family restaurant. The owner of the place is the most amazing and kind women, is actually knitting baby clothes and blankets for her customer babies! (For free!), But the most importantly, the food is always fresh, authentic and fantastic. I don't think it is for everyone, it requires specific taste, but our family and friends absolutely love it.

I love the Blue Nile . I go there regularly for the amazing home cooked traditional Eritrean food . The atmosphere is so beautiful , cool music, interesting artefacts and paintings adorn the walls . It’s great for small groups as well as larger gatherings. Staff and so welcoming and helpful .

Realmente me encanta este lugar, el único problema es que no puedo ir allí lo suficiente. Ya sea que tengamos las opciones de verduras o carne, siempre se cocina a pedido y no es inusual que le pregunten qué platos le gustaron y sacan más. El servicio siempre es excelente.

The food was quite nice but we had a very unpleasant experience as the staff shouted at my partner because she found a hair in her food. It was very uncomfortable and we were essentially kicked out. It was a shame as I had been looking forward to dining here due to the good reviews.

A delightful, quixotic venue, with food to match. Service was impecable and the unusual menu offering was thoughtfully explained together with the traditional way of eating the stew with fermented pancake. A highly memorable meal for all the right reasons. Plus the first time i have drank Eritraen beer, that had a slight 'malteser' flavour. Would recommend highly, a pleasant change to the run of a mill 'Indian' curry.

The food is fantastic, something a little different. The couple that run the place go out of their way to make sure you your enjoy your experience. They even cooked my young son some pasta when he didn’t like some of the more spicy stews. We have been several times and will definitely be back!

Food is absolutely delicious and very reasonably priced (as are drinks). Lovely atmosphere and very friendly service. We love coming here!

The restaurant has an industrial feel to it very cool. Service was attentive. I booked the restaurant as was staying with a friend and wanted a change from our usual haunts. I also had read the Open Table article on the top London restaurants and Blue Nile is featured. We ordered a mixed platter of meat and vegetable dishes and it came with a traditional spongy bread. I thought the meat dishes were very good shame there wasn’t more of it. The vegetable dishes were ok but the bread was cold and so the dishes didn’t quite marry well together and I wasn’t a fan of the consistency it’s quite yeasty/spongy. The Ethiopian beer is recommended. I’m not sure if we ordered badly perhaps I would go back and go for the meat dishes.

I’m so glad I finally got to try the food at Blue Nile. Although there are not many options, the food caters for meat eaters, vegetarians and vegans alike. It was quiet and the owner explained how to eat the food traditionally and how they dishes were made. Bar the noise from people standing outside the shop (as it is in the middle of a busy street in Woolwich) the atmosphere was relaxed.

Heard about this restaurant a few years ago and finally went at the weekend. The food , service and ambience was outstanding. We are all vegetarian and the food was lovely. Bill for 3 including desert £50 - bargain

Mi avevano parlato bene di Blue Nile Cafè e non sbagliavano. Il menu è ristrettissimo, praticamente un solo piatto cucinato in diverse varianti, ma il piatto è di qualità altissima, buonissimo. La cosa più deliziosa è l'accoglienza: avevo scritto che saremmo andati lì a festeggiare il nostro terzo anniversario, e sul tavolo abbiamo trovato un vasetto con tre tulipani.

Quite honestly one of the loveliest restaurants I have been to. The owners/hosts, a lovely couple, were warm and welcoming, and the food was affordable and delicious. My friend and I had the injera with meat and veg dishes and kemem tea. We were so full and satisfied we could barely walk! I also had a very informative chat with the gentleman about Eritrea and its current situation, and he was very kind to give me some pamphlets and notes to take home. I can&#039;t wait to visit when I am next in London. Keep up the great work :)

Si hubiera una opción para dar una estrella negativa lo haría. Me encanta la cocina de Eritrea y he estado en muchos restaurantes de Eritrea en Londres y en todo el mundo. Tendré que decir que la toma de Blue Nile está por debajo de lo normal: es muy insípida, la presentación es mala y la cantidad es pequeña. Sin embargo, todavía seguí yendo allí, ya que es el único eritreo cerca de donde salgo. Después de mi última visita, nunca volveré a ir allí y les he pedido a mis amigos que tampoco lo hagan.

Lovely family run restaurant near where I live - will be going regularly in future! The staff are very personable and keen to make you feel welcome. The food is very tasty, and their generous portions mean you will not leave hungry!

Would definitely recommend, especially to those looking for a vegan meal in Woolwich. Shewa&#039;s vegetable stews are superb! Also, make sure to try her homemade caffeine free tea and the coffee she ROASTS HERSELF.

Quirky place, with lovely friendly service. Was good to experience completely different food. Would return with friends.

If you&#039;ve had Eritrean food before, it&#039;s fairly standard and a bit overpriced. The main downside is the arrogance of the owners - they&#039;re better off getting young fresh faces who can cope with service if they&#039;re not going to greet and serve you with a smile.

They went out of their way to serve us dinner despite a booking error. Food and the ambience of the place were also amazing. Definitely going back again

Small, specialist menu. Be prepared to dine with only a few serving spoons and no other utensils. A rare experience, a glimpse from Woolwich into another world. Genial waiting staff, willing to advise and instruct.

This is my go-to restaurant every time I visit London. The food is consistently delicious, the portions are generous, and - frankly - it's a bargain. Absolute little gem, thoroughly worth recommending.

We were amazed at the reception greeting us by the owners. They took us through the history and background both of the restaurant and the food as well as that of Eritrea itself and of their connection with the country and that part of Africa. We were given an explanation regarding the maps and other memorabilia on display.

Visited on sunday 4th Nov. 2018. Good welcome from an elderly lady.Asked what part of Egypt she came from andshe informed me that she came from Eritea. Met her husband when we were shown the menu and he gave us an inclination of what the meal was.We were 5 persons at the meal and we enjoyed the food and the Tea too.

Ate here with a friend, first time eating Eritrean food and thoroughly enjoyed. If I lived in London it would be a regular place to eat. The food, atmosphere and staff were wonderful.

We get the vegetarian set. Unique tastes of each each dish, unlike some places where spices are the same across dishes. Subtle but wonderful flavors, lightly but clearly spiced. Love the chickpeas, lentils, tomato dishes. Unique delicious flavors. Owners run the place and are extremely gracious, friendly and welcoming, like joining them for dinner in their own home. Eritrean tea is perfect accompaniment. Best and freshest injera. Our favorite restaurant in the southeast area around Woolwich and our favorite Eritrean/Ethiopean restaurant in London and we've been to a couple of the best elsewhere.

Si quieres una comida maravillosa comiendo la mejor comida con sabor, este es el lugar para ir. Me encantan las injera y las cazuelas. Injera es como un sabroso panqueque de esponja en el que se sirven los guisos y luego se arrancan trozos de injera para comerlos. No se usan cubiertos, ¡es muy divertido! Hacen arroz y pasta para niños si lo prefieren.

The food was ok but nothing like what I expect from Ethiopian food. All dishes were watered down in terms of salt and spice to suit the western palette resulting in dishes that did not taste anything like the originals. The prices were also steep for the portions - we were two adults and a child and ordered the sharing menu, the owner asked if it was three and I said yes. Mistake. We got the same portions as would come for two people but were charged for three. I knew about the portions as a couple next two us ordered the same and got the same portions. Disappointed.<br /><br />The ambiance is also not traditional Eritrean/Ethiopian. The place was a sausage shop in the past and the owners decided to keep the same decor! Except for a map of Eritrea, nothing related to the culture. The sign in front of the shop also needs an upgrade IMHO.<br /><br />But on the up note, the owner, Hapte, was a gentleman and was quite nice, chatting with us about Eritrean history etc.
