Blockhouse at The Sheet Anchor in Newcastle-under-Lyme

What a pleasure it was to eat at 'The Blockhouse'. The staff couldn't have been more helpful, they catered to our every need. The food and service was excellent, we will most definitely go there again. 😃👍.

Beautiful food. Been a number of times and the food is always great. The person who served our burgers gave us the wrong burger, so I took a bite out of my other half’s burger before realising (oops) but the food tasted good and cooked to perfection. Service is always lovely, nice chilled out atmosphere. If you like indie rock music like the kooks etc, you’ll enjoy the music too. Not too loud but creates a bit of ambience. This is my go to place for this kind of food!

Beautiful modern restaurant. Great atmosphere, staff are so friendly, happy and 100% on it. Food is amazing. Served quickly. Great drink choices also. Personal touch for special occasions by adding balloons to the table. The blockhouse is turning into my favourite restaurant after my second visit. Definitely worth a visit.

Food was pretty good, very expensive though. Also added on an automatic tip which is ridiculous.

There was an issue with the starter with our meal and the staff sorted it out straight away, were friendly about it, offered us a drink to apologise and took the item off the bill. Great service, lovely meal despite a small issue :)

My meal was amazing I can't say anything bad about it however my friend who's leaving do we went for ordered the shared plate with another friend. It cost £65 and came cold and dry the portion size was tiny and I can honestly say I had more on my plate than there was on the share platter. Looking back to when one of my friends came less than a year ago and got the same share platter it was clear they got alot more for £5 less. We didn't say anything during eating as at the point the staff came over the food that had been eaten off the platter was warmish and we didn't realise the rest was cold. The ribs that came on it had barely any meat on them and when separated one was bare while the other had the tiniest amount of meat. We also originally had no drinks menu and when we wanted second drinks had to go to the bar as the staff neglected our table for the 50 minutes we was waiting for food. When we did say something about the food we then found the staff calling us all sorts of names at the bar for saying the food was cold and even when we did say something the member of staff we told was trying to blame us. I would have went back but the staff were that awful it put me off. They did knock £20 off for the cold meal but then attempt to put a £20 service charge on despite ignoring our table. It was very gutting as my meal was amazing but the treatment of the staff, name calling and unter disrespect has really put me off and the price just isn't worth it would highly recommend going somewhere else alot of places are a better value for money and have much better staff.

Atmosphere was great and the staff were very friendly, but the food was overpriced and underwhelming. The burger, despite tasting nice was tiny. The portion size was very poor. The sticky toffee pudding was very poor, tasted like a cheap microwaved sponge.

Disappointing service for a birthday meal. I paid for balloons to be on the table, which they were, making it obvious to all staff we were celebrating. I was told by phone, that the birthday girl would receive a cheesecake slice with sparkler on… I’d also taken in a birthday cake, for them to present after our mains. We had starters and mains, which were all good, and then two other tables celebrating had their cheesecake/sparkler delivered- with people singing happy birthday…. We waited and waited, but ours didn’t arrive, no one came anywhere near to our table to ask if we wanted anything else. Most of our party didn’t know about the cheesecake or our cake we had taken in, and were ready to leave…I didn’t want to get up and ask at the desk as the birthday girl was sitting directly in line and would have seen me… Eventually my mum caught the attention of our waiter, and asked about the cake… He brought out the cake with a sparkler on - no cheesecake for the birthday girl- no big deal, but was expecting it, as I had been told about it, and the other tables received there’s… I did mention that we had been forgotten about, when paying the bill, they doubled checked they had our information about celebrating and apologised. The balloons were £9.95, and were completely deflated by the morning, so I think poor value. I was asked for a review later via email, and gave my review, and was told they would have a meeting to see how they could improve.

Birthday meal for my Mother in Law, the Birthday card made her day and was a lively touch. Food arrived hot and well presented. The staff, as always, were fabulous, friendly, professional with a wine of humour which made the whole experience better. The only gripe we had was that the roast beef was really fatty. The beef itself was tender and tasted lovely, just a bit disappointed in the amount of fat but it’s just a small thing o wall.

I went on Mother’s Day after a trip to Brigemere. I was treated to lunch by my daughter and son-in-law, and we hadn’t booked. We just called in and sat In the front bar area. It was cosy, the food was perfect, and the atmosphere was buzzing. I had a lovely time and would defo go again. The sheet anchor has a long standing reputation that is well deserved it ticks all the boxes.

Food was absolutely delicious. Staff were welcoming and very friendly from the moment we stepped in the building. Will definitely be returning. Can't fault in any way . Thanks to all the team for the brilliant service

We were a party of 8 who experienced the bottomless brunch at The Blockhouse, Baldwins Gate on Saturday 5th April. We arrived on time for our booking which was at 2pm. We were greeted nicely and seated. Our server during the 90 minutes was Ethan. He was extremely helpful, polite and attentive. We were all very impressed with our experience and would definitely recommend it to friends and return ourselves.

The food is incredible. The gravy is so good you should serve it behind the bar in pint glasses. Would totally recommend you to everyone. The staff were wonderful we were not rushed at all. It was a perfect night. Thank you

I’ve been to the Blockhouse a couple of times and had a great experience, but tonight was just off. Service was … well random. Inattentive, multiple mistakes on the order despite having to go over the order a few times at the point of ordering, our waitress was just disinterested. Food was covered in sliced red chilli on half of the dishes ordered. Halloumi tacos could have been lovely but were covered in a sauce so spicy that I couldn’t eat half of what I ordered. Nachos were just ok. Burger was fine but was upsold a double patty, to then just one patty on the actual burger. When we tried to get the attention of the waitress to flag, and ensure we weren’t charged for two patties, she just said ok and walked away. Two patties appeared on the bill …. Disappointed tonight - I probably would give another go based on previous experiences, and everywhere can have an off night but this just wasn’t worth the money for the food, service or experience tonight.

Came here to celebrate finishing my apprenticeship with my partner. We came and celebrated my partners birthday last september. The food was amazing! So tasty and well presented. The service was almost too keen, but very friendly and professional. Overall, another great experience. We’ll be making it a habit to celebrate special occasions

Disappointed to find a reduced menu. Came to celebrate wedding anniversary and presented with a menu with very limited choice. No notice of this on website at time of booking.

1/ Meal comes with fries. Order a side of dirty fries and you don't get the fries that the meal should come with. 2/ 7.50 for a side of fries. Quality of the "dirty" ingredients poor in relation to the price. 3/ The 12 hour smoked Brisket tasted like it had been smoked by leaving it in a dirty ashtray for 12 hours. 4 Food looks great and they say you eat with your eyes but it just came across as an overpriced Tex Mex. Would pay a lot more for a quality meal but this was just worth the price. The positive. Could not fault the staff. Could not have been better and more attentive.Nice atmosphere. But overall it's a like a tex Mex Toby carvery where the food looks better than it is and has a far higher price tag. Won’t be returning.

It really lives up to expectations, I was recommended this place by a friend and I thought why not give it a try. The food was amazing to say the least, very affordable for anyone on a budget but still wanting to eat amazing food! Not only the food but the staff were a true credit to the place, especially my server Leyla - she was helpful throughout the entirety of my experience there. Overall I would say that the next time I am in town I will definitely be visiting again!

We've had a lovely evening. Leyla, our server, remembered us and treated us like old., valued friends. Attentive and friendly. The atmosphere here is lovely and conducive to customers chatting to each other. The food, served quickly and well presented, was good. My only criticism was that the ribs were too smoky, but I realise that is personal choice. Meat was tender and the wine was exceptional for the price. Leyla, you're fab xxx

Even though it was busy I have to say our waitress Lauren was very attentive and went above and beyond, she mentioned how there is a complimentary cheesecake for birthdays and due to it being our youngest’s 17th we were able to secure her a free cheesecake.

Great night for Paddy’s day! Layla was amazing kept us filled up with drinks all night. Up sold everything so instead of 2 glasses of wine and 2x pints we got 2 bottles and many pints!

The person who took our order was very friendly and attentive without being too pushy. They were able to make recommendations and advise on the different products that were on offer.We ordered 2 burgers and were each happy with our choice. Based on the experience, we would definitely visit again.
