Black Horse Inn in St. Helens

Not been for a while, what an improvement. The decor was beautiful, the food although cheap was beautiful, we all enjoyed our meals. Drinks reasonably priced served with ice, a straw and a smile. The staff waiting on were brilliant and very busy. My favourite pub in rainhill once again. Well done.

I went tonight for my daughter in law’s 21st birthday there was 6 of us, the food was absolutely amazing, it’s the best steak I’ve ever had the service was amazing and I can’t fault any of it, Well Done to you all Thank You

Great pub, food was delicious and staff are always attentive! I got the steak and chicken skillet which was cooked beautifully and served by Laura! Manager was great shown us to a table and also directed us to the loyalty system on the app! Will definitely return

Nicely refurbished. Totally unacceptable wait of 1hr 20min for food for 2 people. Asked to speak with manager, who I believe was Scot, assistant manager. Very poor management skills, he stood at least a metre away, and when I said the food was acceptable but the wait was totally unacceptable, his attitude was of disinterest. He said the kitchen had been very busy and he'd had to go in himself. He said he'd take both main meals of the bill, to which I agreed but it ruined the evening. Very disappointing. The lady that served us was lovely

Came for breakfast this morning with my family. I had the bacon waffles and my family has a full English each. Great meals that’s are brilliant value! Lovely, welcoming staff as soon as you walk through the door!

Breakfast was great so was the staff it came out quick had the big breakfast one of the best I’ve had in a while. Was Really surprised how cheap it was cause it was high quality and you can tell

Had a lovely starter and sizzling main course at The Black Horse. Staff were friendly and helpful. Although busy, we received our food in good time and it was delicious.

Effectively, no longer a pub. Shocked to discover they do not serve any real ale. Such a shame, would have been a cosy place to sit and drink.

Went here for my daughters birthday with all the family. and our 7 month old grandson. The food was exceptional, and the service from the staff was second to none. My daughter was absolutely gobsmacked when the bar staff brought out her cake, and joined in happy birthday. I hadn't been here before, but let's say it is now a family favourite! Thank you again to all the staff but a special shout out to Paddy, Laura and Julia for going way beyond service and making our daughters birthday surprise extra special!!

We regularly visit this Pub, my daughter and I for quality time together, with a group of friends weekly and for all our family birthdays. We also had my daughter’s baby shower there. Food is absolutely lovely! Always piping hot, good portion sizes, great selection on the menu too. I absolutely LOVE a good salad no matter what the weather is - and the salad bowl with hot chicken and bacon or halloumi OR their Caesar Salad is delicious! Highly recommend

Christmas Day 2023. Horrendous. staff are lovely.SACK the chief. stuffing ball had a film over it. the turkey had a weird taste i think it was under cooked.the yorkshire pudding was soggy. the veg was so hard i don't think it had been in boiling water. even the roasted parsnips were hard. the pigs in blankets were covered in grease as though they had hone cold before being plated.the plate was hot but food was luke warm. one meal came out without gravy.the only thing i ate was the roast potatoes and the gravy. the whole meal was absolutely disgusting. And we had an early sitting so its not even a case of been too busy. the desert was an icecream party a glass with icecream at the bottom party ring biccys huge pieces of birthday cake and cream on top. the apple pie an custard was rancid. no imagination and no flare. I can honestly say the only nice thing was Leaving…….£55 quid. daylight robbery. Don’t Bother

Recently refurbished. Great value meals. But the waitress Becca is the absolute star of the place, she remembered my daughters name and sang happy birthday to her. She literally went above and beyond. She is an absolute credit to the venue.

Has recently been refurbished and the place looks amazing, staff are very friendly and knowledgeable. We had the fish and chips and a gammon which were both delicious and well worth the money.

I wanted this to be a good experience after the recent refurb as this is our local but not the case. When ordering food we were told there were no sizzling skillets available so food would be on a plate. I asked if there would...

Sizzling chicken fajitas, tasty but very little veg. No coke had diet coke or Pepsi I had a no alcohol pina colada which was the worst I've ever had,definitely no cream in it and didn't even come in a cocktail glass! Very poor!

A couple of issues but fully resolved, 2 meals arrived slightly wrong, the manager was extremely apologetic and resolved within a few minutes, and gave us 2 free drinks. Service was as always perfect. Must say, loving the new decor feels different but familiar. Food...

Went to visit for my birthday, had a great time, food was great. Lukey B was great and made our experience fun and entertaining and was engaging and communicated with us.

Very poor sizzler was Luke warm chips cold asked another waitress could I speak to the manager the waitress who served us came over offering free dessert people on other tables telling me to ask for money back but left instead stay away people

Drinks fine , staff and service grest but food appalling.... Grilled Lemon and chicken skillet with lemon and garlic...chargrilled dry chicken , no flavour..singed cougette , no peppers and a little bit of red onion, rice bland and dry ..poor portion... chicken burger bang avarage...

A little disappointed with our meal tonight at the newly refurbished pub ... Decor is nice but no major changes Staff lovely as always ! But I wasn't impressed with the new menu and the layout is quite confusing All my favourites have been removed...

Little disappointed following the refurbishment. Kitchen wasn't open on time, no change in the poor beer selection and didn't have the dish we selected from a high calorific menu? On a plus note, the refurbishment looks very good and the staff were friendly.

Went to the grand opening and was not disappointed. The Revamp is gorgeous, lovely colours and a warm ambiance. Phill had the chinese pork belly which he said was delicious and I had the 10 oz rump which was cooked to perfection. Glad to see...

Called in on Boxing Day for a meal and drinks with the family. Service was quite slow when waiting for our order to be taken and turned out they didn’t have some of the items on the menu we wanted, although minutes later we overheard the only item missing was the sauce. If we were informed of this we would have been happy to continue to have the meal, and to just exchange for a different sauce. Once the food that was available arrived, it was bland and had no flavour. A second offer for drinks was not offered during the entirety of our visit and our plates were sat cold in front of us for at least 30 minutes before being taken away. Despite all this, the staff were polite and well mannered, however I do not believe the restaurant is managed very well. Personally I will not be returning.

First time back since the second look down. Greeting was warm and friendly and informative about the covid safety controls. Service was friendly and swift and food was good pud grub as usual. Again another good visit well done 👏

Just had lunch taking advantage of the "50 % off deal, booked online and great. We look after a disabled person who has frequently been here before and enjoys it. Online it states that it is 50% off Monday to Wednesday.. had meal... Items missing off the Chicken Stack (natcho, onion rings) but I thought to myself I'll not complain for it us half price.. Came to pay bill to find that we are going to be charged full price.. We asked if thst was right to be told have you got code which we didnt.. No advise given or help.. No offer to show us how to do it... Waitress took our money and returned with change.. Dissapointed that on arrival ("booked online) to find we were not booked in... Then not asked of we are taking advantage of offer, items missing off meal.. Then to be charged full price when we were under the impression that it should be half price using up all of our service users budget... Dissapointed is t the word and lack of help and empathy from waiting staff.. Didn't complain at time for our service user was becoming adjitated and needed to go... Feel Dissapointed ripped off and generally unhappy.. Poor advertising if you don't offer what you advertise.. Will not visit again... Had tried to contact pub by phone also but no one seems to answer the phone..

Just been in for an early evening meal. Had the Italian chicken and Sweet chilli beef. The food was fabulous and the service was great. All Covid restrictions were adhered too, one way system in place and the staff all had masks on. Would definitely recommend this place.

1st time back since the new safety rules. Great welcome new rules explained and felt very safe. The manager and team made us feel very welcome and looked after us all night. Keep up the good work.

Visited for a family birthday party , 6 of us. Wednesday evening so not very busy. Welcome was great, food was amazing BUT sadly let down by poor service. No one came over to ask how were the meals, and when we finished we sat for a long time and no one cleared the table. We ordered cocktails and desserts and when the waitress brought our second cocktails to us I asked could we put a candle in a dessert to sing happy birthday, she said you have ordered ice creams and sundaes so no .....I wasnt after a freebie but a little customer service ?? A bit of fuss it was clearly a special birthday !! So it was a no she left the cocktails along with our empty dirty plates on the table. Then the desserts came and i had to ask the waitress to clear our table...who wants to sit infront of empty dirty dishes whilst trying to enjoy a special birthday meal ?? No one acknowledged the birthday despite balloons etc . Sorry Black Horse food was lovely service very poor didnt feel like you wanted our business .

Very pleasant staff, food great on all visits over last couple of months. Paula is very pleasant cheers the place up and makes you feel so welcome. Crispy sweet chilli beef is gorgeous.

Went out as a family of 4. Soon as we entered the pub we were warmly welcomed by a member of staff, who explained the COVID procedures and the items which were not on the menu. Ordered starters, mains and desserts no complaints with any. Good pub grub reasonably priced. Service was excellent and will definitely call again when in the area.

Went to this place for lunch during “eat out help out” promotion and was very disappointed. This is the time for restaurants to shine and get people to come back, but this place did the opposite! Will not go back even if it was free. Came in on Wednesday 3pm the restaurant was almost empty, however we waited an HOUR for starters, then another 30min for the mains! When the food came it was tasteless- starters we had halloumi fries and torpedo prawns which were greasy and tasted like they where from Iceland. The mains- loaded surf and turf was bland, steak was Chevy and overcooked, stack of buttermilk chicken burger was as bland as the interior on the place... Deserts- chocolate cake was barely warm and tasted like baking powder (no chocolate taste in sight) and Eton mess Sunday, well you can’t mess something that doesn’t require cooking but raspberry syrup didn’t taste raspberry. Felt sorry for the servers as they were really nice, because it’s not their fault food takes that long to come out and it’s so crappy. Felt like sending every plate back but as I’m 8months pregnant couldn’t sit any longer without enduring back pain or getting my bum numb so just ate the grub and left...

Called in for a drink with family 26th July, asked by manager to gel our hands on entry. Waitresses serving food without masks or visors, talking and breathing over food, and not wiping tables properly in line with current Covid guidelines. Was thinking of booking a family meal for 6 next weekend but won't be bothering now. My advice is to swerve this place and stay healthy. What is it about these virus instructions they don't understand?

Overcharged .... be careful people... check the amount you are being charged.The food menu says you can have a alcoholic drink for £1 with your food but you get charged FULL PRICE... when I pointed this out to the barman he blamed the till... How many other people has this happened to ????

Went here for Christmas dinner and we were not disappointed. We booked for nine adults and four kids and the meal and service was great. We never had to wait for our food and the staff that brought the food were professional and polite and very helpful. The meal itself was excellent. Thirteen of us to wait on was not a problem for the staff. We had booked again because of the same experience last Christmas and we were glad we did. Thank you for a great meal and making it a memorable day for all our family.

I have visited a lot of pubs in the area but have to say this beats the lot for food and value can't knock it was really good food and will be back very soon 😘

It has been a number of years since I last visited the Black Horse, it used to be a Cask Marque pub then, not anymore. Just ordinary beers on offer. The staff are pleasant but totally unorganised when serving meals. We asked to delay serving the starters until we had a drink, "just let us know when you would like it". Two minutes later the starters arrived, we hadn't said we were ready. I enjoyed the tomato soup. My wife was still eating the starter when the waiter started clearing the table, he was asked to stop. We all had the steak as the main course. You get a lot of onions with the steak. Mine was very fatty while my friends were fine. Again we asked for the desert to be delayed "of course just let us know when". Two minutes later it arrived. It should have been apple crumble but turned out to be soggy apple pie. It should have been better the whole experience. It is unlikely I will return.

Excellent pub,great staff who are thoroughly professional, attentive and friendly. I will be back and then I will have a meal this time. The food looked and smelled sensational.

Had a roast with my mum, waited 40 minutes which you don’t mind if after that it’s excellent food, which it wasn’t. Roast potatoes were tepid and tasteless, I don’t believe they are freshly prepared. Veg tasteless, Yorkshire’s were soggy. Shame really, the roast should have been excellent and more timely in arriving as it was a Sunday! Will not be returning

Been a couple of times and the food is never hot just warm. Staff haven't got a clue. I was standing at an empty bar on my own for a couple of minutes and a barmaid comes out and says " Who's next " Lost for words. They should try asking that when I've been standing there with 5 or 6 other people, but they don't or just ignore you.

This is my local pub, I come here regularly and can’t fault it. The team are friendly and know my name and order and take there time to chat with me. I eat here every couple of weeks and it is what it is for food, cheap and tasty. It’s a clean as it can be and I’ve seen it get busier over the last year or so. Great to have the football back! It can tick a lot of boxes here, decent food, good pint and sports in bar area. I know they even do catering in a private room for parties. It’s a chain pub that does exactly what it says in the tin. Bill, Laura and Jackie are spot on as are the rest of the team. Cheap beer on a Monday too!

Great pub, lovely food. We also came here for christmas dinner last year and honestly couldn’t fault it. Staff are all lovely and couldn’t do enough for us. Will definately be back soon. Our little girl particularly liked the manager Bill, he made the effort to talk to her and make her laugh.

Manager so rude. Due to go back for a planned meal but won’t be going back after that. Pity as bar staff are lovely. I only live down the road too.

Espresso in a milk jug - not sure if this is deliberate but apparently nobody ever buys them so despite being in the menu this is the way it’s served - mavericks !

Popped in the dinner food was typical pub style reasonable price staff friendly all ok get what you pay food from a pub chain .

Visited here quite a few times food is always very nice and service is excellent and the place is always spotless. There is an outdoor play area for the children and a beer garden & a large car park.

Staff very unfriendly waited an hour for meals when it arrived pie was thick hard pastry with gravy in middle chips horrible my sons meal was worse had burnt chicken with raw onions really was worst meal we have ever had never going there again

Always been my local pub, came in with my family of 5 today for a meal. We Waited for a member of staff to take us to a table, which we didn’t have to wait long for atall.

Pub was pretty quiet when we arrived. Southern fried chicken stack and a gammon ordered and drinks. Food arrived about 30 minutes later. Looked lovely and was lovely. Pub had filled up while we were waiting for our food but not packed. Staff friendly and attentive.

On Wednesday 25th September myself and my husband decided we'd take the children out for a mid week treat. We've always loved the food at the black horse so it was our first choice. We all hoped in the car at around 7pm (7 of us) and set off, we only live 5 mins away. We walked in and I could see the lady behind the bar eyeing us up then eventually asked could she help. I asked could she seat 7, she looked at us and said that she would have to have a look. After about 5 or so minutes she came back and informed us that their 2 large tables were reserved (at gone 7 at night in a place that stops serving at 9) so I asked could they seat us at 2 smaller tables as we had our adult children with us, to just be told out right no! The place wasn't even busy and we could see through the window that they had many empty tables. Absolutely disgusting, so we went to the seven stars who were very acommadating and the food was lovely.

Booked a table online for breakfast at 10.30am and received a booking confirmation back by email. Arrived at the pub to find it closed! The lady who answered the door said they don't do breakfasts anymore! Asked to speak to the manager as the booking system shouldn't allow people to book for breakfast if they don't do them. I thought they perhaps would want to sort it out so other customers weren't inconvencied, apparently not!! The response was it's nothing to do with us it's Mitchell and Butler (owners I assume) no apology, no we'll let them know literally it's nothing to do with us...customer service needs a lot of work! Have come to the new Park Restaurant instead, highly recommend.

Visiting from London with my friends and had just finished the Beatles tour and decided to pop in here for some dinner and was blown away by how lovely the managers Stephen and his partner were. Had great fun chatting and getting to know the people that work here. Me and my friends then ate some amazing food which topped of what really was a nice evening. Recommend coming here for some good pub food and atmosphere!

Had lunch here recently staff were helpful with the wi fi .the food was a good selection and reasonable prices. Also watched the cricket while dining. Good to see sky sports back .

Went here on a Monday night in August. I had Messy Mexican which was burnt rather than Sizzling!

The food at the black horse is outstanding, Teddi the assistant manager is very polite and incredibly helpful! She made us feel welcomed and kept checking on us to make sure everything was perfect. I couldn’t recommend this pub enough!

We come here once a year for a family meal and i go every now and then.. I think people expect very high standards in the food but its a pub and not a restaurant. The food is still very nice and very good value for money and that's all that counts.

Lovely pub nice atmosphere and decent food. Bar staff nice and polite ...went on a Saturday and the place was not too busy.

We booked a table for our small group of people a few hours before going to The Black Horse but when we arrived the staff denied all knowledge of the booking . As it happened the pub had plenty of available tables but instead of apologising and perhaps laughing it off, my wife made to feel that we had made a mistake .

Popped in for dinner with my family. Food was spot on and great value. Pub food just what we wanted. The staff where very friendly.

Not my first visit - been many times over the years, but I have to say the standard of service has fallen over time.

I have always had a great meal here, always hot, fresh and tasty. The management and staff are very welcoming and attentive. Good choice of beers too. Nice relaxing atmosphere.

Ordered roast beef Sunday roast and hot peppered beef Sunday roast. Explained this to 2 of the staff that it wasn’t what we ordered and they said it’s what comes with Sunday roast, but it doesn’t say anything about peppered beef in the Sunday roast menu.Not very happy with how this was dealt with. Visit here regularly and never had a problem. Be a while before we go again.

Love this pub ,visit often with my family and wud recommend to everyone to give it a try ,excellent play area for children and really nice environment.

I would not return, the beef was delicious ( though a small portion). The veg where mediocre.(frozen) .The staff where however very good.

So...we often find this place a bit hit and miss food wise.

Visited here last week with friends for a social meal. Firstly the food was below standard and we all felt unwell the next day. We was asked to move away from our table during the night into the bar where it was bitterly cold and uncomfortable. We were asked if we would like any more drinks when it was last orders and we no sooner bought our bottles of wine when we was asked to leave as they were closing, which was very early no later than 11:30. We had to wait outside in the freezing cold for our taxi as the manager locked up and drove away. We found the whole experience dissapointing and will not be returning.

Promising start,met on entering and shown to table. Ordered 2 chicken burgers and chips. A Saturday,around 7.30ish. Not too busy. A bit of a wait but not too bad.

Came here Sunday evening and it was really busy, but have to say the time I waited for our food was well worth it, the food was amazing and so was the drinks, there were some staff there that looked miserable most of them girls but the young lad was working hard and was always smiling and very helpful think his name was eliot I’m not sure but other then that excellent.

Decent food at a good price, good selection at the bar and there are usually offers on make this a no brainer!. The Car Park is large and the interior is also spacious. No issues with the staff who where polite and helpful. Enjoyed our luch here!.

Have been here in the past and things have been a bit disappointing. However two recent visits have shown a good quality of food along with helpful and friendly staff. In addition great attention to detail regarding a gluten free order. We’ll done to the team there! Would recommend.

Had such a lovely night celebrating my mums 50th on Sunday, polite smiley staff , warm cosy atmosphere especially with the cold weather... food arrived fairly quickly at a great standard, I will recommend this lovely pub to all my friends. See you again soon!

Recently went for sunday lunch. The food was great. staff friendly. Much better now with the cutlery on the tables . Saves you getting up and down all the time . Was seated by the manager ,again this is better then walking round try to find a table. Overall much improved.

Called in on an impromptu date with my sisters. Average pub grub, nothing special but nothing bad. Just ordinary . Atmosphere was nice and it appeared clean and tidy

Been here tonight for my sister's 50th Birthday celebrations with family, there was 10 of us and we all had different meals and was very pleased with each one of them. Staff are so polite and can't do enough to make your visit a good one. Will definitely be back again in the future.

This had to be one of the better drinking pubs in Rainhill. Warm and cosy with a friendly feel to it when you walk in. There are 2 bars. A main bar with a pool table, dairy board and a few chairs. In the next room it's a more relaxed feel with a nice array of chairs and tables to sit and watch the football or just catch up with friends. A great selection of ales and beers as well as ciders. Reasonably priced as well. This is definitely the best place to watch your live football games with numerous tv sets in each room. An added bonus is an Indian restaurant that can be accessed through the sitting bar. The bar staff are very friendly and always up for a chat.

Good service, nice staff, decent food, good atomsphere. Not been for a while but will definitely be back again. Good value pub grub.Happy customer.

Dropped in with friends for a couple of pints and something to eat- we sat in beer garden as weather so warm however gangs of kids running round throwing toys and stones and unsupervised by their parents and no prevention by staff.

Bit quiet - visited a couple of times on weekdays during the week - pleasant outside space and nice and spacious inside for bar and also dining area. Menu is a bit limited aside from pub classics but all good. Portions are a bit on the small side but that reflects the price. Kids menu is great! Staff are pleasant and it ticks the box if you’re wanting to escape the restaurant and Costa menu at Whiston hospital as it’s so close by! Bit if a god send really.
