My party of 5 had mixed reactions to the quality of food. My own choice (grilled swordfish)was well-cooked and very tasty. My friends were less enthusiastic, however. This, coupled with the delays between courses, has led me to an average rating

visiting ross on business with my wife , we were looking on trip adviser for somewhere to eat in the evening , our problem was we needed a meal that could be prepared to our needs as we have both recently joined weight watchers, reading the reviews about this restaurant from previous visitors , someone said that the chef had been able to cook for there dietary needs, so it seemed to fit the bill, i asked the chef if this was ok and we weren't putting him to too much trouble , the chef [joe] told us to let him know what we would like and if he had it he would cook it for us …. i choose the medley of fish , and my wife choose a chicken kebab with peppers and rice with vegetables , both dishes were perfect , the mussels that were served with my dish were the best I've ever tried, the staff were lovely and the music was all the best old tunes, the kinks , free, george harrison [gently weeps] …. a very superb night out

Without booking we arrived as a party of 6 (with a child and a baby) and were greeted warmly. Seated, welcomed, all was good. Cider selection was good, and wine list was well priced. I wish the food has been as good as everything else...The veg lasagne was ok was scorching hot like it had been nuked in a microwave and came without garlic bread (?) despite it being on the menu. The beef stroganoff was terrible and tasted like dry kebab meat in a packet sauce. The vertical mixed meat kebab was dry, and more vegetables than meat. No pork in sight? A far cry from the £16 charged for it. The mixed fish grill was good, the only good meal on the table. When asked if we enjoyed our food, we simply said that we didn't. The server was sweet and informed the chef. I went to the bar a little later and the owner(?) assured me confidently that it was fillet steak but when you have strings of meat 8-10 inches long that must have been a mighty cow...We were given free dessert which I appreciated but it still didn't make it for a rather poor experience especially as our family were only together one night. We didn't have expect to need to buy crisps after dinner.

The restaurant serves well-flavoured and well-cooked meals. The menu is not trendy but there is a good selection for all tastes. We are veggies and they had several appealing options. The chef came around at the end of the evening and asked if we enjoyed the food (a first for me). He said that he would happily adapt dishes for vegetarians - what a great attitude!Overall, the restaurant is good value, the atmosphere is relaxed and pleasant (especially if you like music from the seventies -who doesn't?), and the food is of a high standard. A delightful, warm interior, in a beautiful small town. This bistro certainly excel with their fish stew, Cantaplana! Upon ordering, I was informed it was a great choice and have to say, I would not hesitate to go back for another repeat. If anything the vegetable side was slightly over cooked but was not too wet or mushy. Overall, a highly recommended dish for any fish/sea food lover.

My husband and I visited Ross on wye and called in on the restaurant on chance as we did not know the area. What a lucky Find! We both had the Dover Sole which was extremely tasty and a good size. The staff were extremely helpful and attentive. Also it was my birthday and we were having a lovely time we had bought little gifts for our grandchildren and we did not realise until the next day when we got back home that we had left them in the restaurant. luckily we had kept the receipt and managed to find the phone number. I rang the restaurant and the gentleman remembered us and that we had left the toys there. Without any hesitation he said he would parcel up and post out the items as soon as possible. This not only cost him money but his time as well. It is not very often that you come across anyone who will go out of their way to help.So a big fat Thank you to all at Bistro Mondo for you lovely food, lovely staff and honesty. We stayed for three nights and spent the majority of our evenings at Bistro Mondo and ate there on two occasions. We were astounded by the warmth and friendliness of the Ross folk in general but particularly Nick and his team at Bistro Mondo who were incredibly welcoming. The food was exceptional and Joe the chef was happy to share his culinary knowledge with us and is clearly passionate about what he does. We were privileged to join the locals at the bar for after dinner drinks and met some genuine unassuming people who have left us with a warm, fuzzy feeling. Superb on every level and we hope to re-visit soon. Thanks Nick and Co for the buzz! Sandra and Simon

My wife and I had a chance to eat out without our kids and so took some time to pick the best restaurant we could find in Ross. Ross has too many restaurants serving the same old stuff that we visitors can get at home. But Mondo's bohemian decor and exciting menu made it a really easy choice. The Mrs adored the Lamb Marrakesh (really tasty, very generous and impossible to make by yourself without a Morroccon relative standing next to you). But I had the totally amazing Cataplana. It arrived in a sealed stewing pot and when it was opened for me an ocean of sheer pleasure was unleashed. King prawns, swordfish, salmon, calamari, vegetables and (please bear in kind I am Irish) perfectly cooked new potatoes in their crunchy skins. I cannot tell you how amazing it looked and then tasted. The healthiest, biggest, tastiest, most exciting dish I have had since I visited a similar kind of restaurant in New Zealand 12 years ago. Food simply doesn't come any better than this in the Northern Hemispshere and I want a cook-off between Bistro Mondos and Bistro 1284 in Rotarua, NZ.Service from Nick and his team was warm and welcoming, ensuring our rare night on our own was truly memorable. We are a quiet and slightly reticent couple but we asked to have a quick word with the chef and met the man behind the food and could see where the imagination, passion and creativity comes from. My wife and I are so passionate about our work in education and healthcare and therefore it is so rewarding to meet others who feels as crazily passionate about what they do as well. We have one shot in this world and so we may as well be our best and not deep-fry some chips and defrosted cod fillets.Very occasially a restaurant gets it perfect and as we travel back home this afternoon our brief getaway break to Ross will be remembered as a perfect evening of luxury.I have never done one of these reviews before and so why now? I am really tired of replicate restaurants serving out the same old stuff on slightly different plates. We'd prefer a sandwich from M&S than waste money on 90% of restaurants that churn out the same old stuff.Mondos is so different. They will transport you to Morrocco or Naples and make you feel like the most important guest they've ever had.If the Roman gods dined out, they'd go here!PS We shared the Cinnamon waffle and ice cream pudding. Blimey...

We had an absolutely terrible dining experience at Bistro Mondo. Although the staff are lovely and very helpful, the food was awful. My boyfriend ordered a medium steak which came more than well done, and I ordered the Cataplana which was completely over cooked. The squid was so chewy it was inedible, and the rest of the fish and langoustines were dry. The only thing in the dish that wasn't over cooked was the potatoes! The restaurants decor could be improved vastly as it is very dark towards the back of the room. A real shame as the rest of the reviews for this restaurant were very good.

Met up here with family for the new £7.95 Sunday lunch – it was the first Sunday they’d offered roasts and the place was very busy. It did mean we waited some while for our meals but when they came, the food was really good and piping hot, and there was a lot of it, but it was served on really cold plates, so things cooled quicker than they would have on warmed plates. Desserts weren’t so good. Nothing wrong with the ice cream, but the (bought in frozen?) crumbles and accompanying custard were both cold. When we came to pay the bill we’d been overcharged, but it was corrected no problem when we queried things, just a shame we had to do so. So we think it’s definitely worth considering Bistro Mondo for a meal, but ask them to make sure the dessert is hot, and check your bill carefully before paying.

We like our fresh tuna lightly seared on two sides but left pink in the middle (like our steaks that way too) and Joe has always done exactly as we ask. We even requested crispy skin on the fresh sea bass and that was no trouble either. An exciting new seasonal menu should provide satisfaction for pretty much anyone who enjoys good food in relaxed surroundings. Matched with the attentive staff, Mondo's is a "must visit" restaraunt. Excellent range of wines and beers available too.And every thursday its live music from 8pm , not too loud and performed by proffesionals, the syles range from country and blues through to soft pop and mellow jazz. Our favourite is Kim Cypher who plays the most amazing saxophone. Accompanied by a gentle electric guitar she has your feet tapping as you eat. A marvelous way to while away a couple of hours. We like this place a lot!

Very good food but menu is very limited. What we had though was great, and the cheese board at the end is one of the best I have had. Nick, the owner is very friendly and makes the whole experience very good, he even remembered we had booked for our anniversary and wished us a happy one. If I was in Ross on Wye again I would definitely revisit.

We were looking forward to trying somewhere a bit different and Bistro Mondo appeared to fit the bill. We were the first customers on a quiet Saturday evening. The decor is interesting and seemed to fit the promise of something different. However service was terrible. We were ignored and found it very difficult to attract the attention of the waitress who spent most of our time there gazing dreamily out of the front window instead of looking around to ensure that customers were happy. The owner/manager kept disappearing so the two waitresses were left very much to their own devices - however, ensuring that customers are happy and keeping an eye on the room are not difficult skills and should not require constant supervision. We noticed that other guests who arrived after us were also left desperately trying to catch the attention of the waiting staff. The food was also disappointing. The cooking was at an amateur level. The pasta ratatouille that I ordered had aubergine that was almost raw, and the seasoning had not been stirred through, meaning that my first mouthful was very underseasoned. I rarely add salt to food, but on this occasion the blandness of the first mouthful indicated that extra seasoning was required. However the third mouthful seemed to contain the entire amount of seasoning for the dish and was overly salty. My husband's lamb tagine was also bland. As a saving grace, it does have a decentish wine list.

A great atmosphere. Excellent meal and evening. The online menu could be kept more up to date - disappointed not to have the lamb off the online menu. A Southern European atmosphere in the restaurant. Nice touch the owner and chef checking our satisfaction. Like the idea of the small bar at the immediate entrance for small number of local drinkers. Would be my favourite watering hole - definitely worth a visit.

We visited Ross a couple of weeks back. While out on the Thursday night we stumbled across live music at Mondos. The weather was lovely, the front doors were open and atmosphere was brilliant. So we walked in. Nick and his team were very welcoming and we spent the next couple of hours talking with the Mondos team, the Ross locals and listening to the live acoustic set. We simply had a fantastic night. We certainly recommend a visit to Mondos on your visit to Ross.

Didn't realise Wednesday was Fish night - which was brilliant for us as we love fish. Had a brilliant starter of whitebait followed by swordfish on noodles, very tasty and fantastic value. Good friendly service. Much improved from our last visit and very good choice of menu and will certainly be back.

Returned to Ross for the first time after probably twenty years to find that it has changed for the worst. The place is tired. There are several good pub grub places but Bistro Mondo stood out and we were not disappointed. A friendly welcome, good menu, good food and wine. Recommended.

Stayed at Ross On Wye for a few days on the 31st July. The town not up to much, but Mondo's saved the day. We had a really good evening there as they had a great jazz trio and the food was excellent. The staff, chef included, were all brilliant. Thanks for a memorable evening. Couldn't have been better, especially as it was my wifes birthday. Many thanks, Dave and Karen from Hampton Court, Surrey.

We visited Mondo's again on Saturday and I can say it was better than before! It was very good before, but this time the food was superb! The Cataplana is a wonderful dish, full of flavour and if you like seafood - it's a must! Everything tasted fresh, even the side veg were delicious, lovely creamy new potatoes and green beans - cooked to perfection! Joe- the chef did an excellent job! Good, efficient, friendly staff and a great atmosphere. It's so nice to have a 'proper' restaurant in Ross rather than have to go to a pub to eat. Long may it continue !

A visit to this restaurant is a must. Lovely food and wine, seafood was delicious, and piri piri chicken is a must for spice lovers! portion sizes were great, a party of 6 and none of us could fault it in anyway. The staff were excellent, it was a birthday so they let us bring our own cake and even gave a free glass of wine to the birthday girl! A very awkward couple were next to us, and the staff dealt with them superbly. Would definitely go back.

Great to have a Wine bar in Ross. Menu looked good but food was absolutely tasteless, what a disappointment. The smell of the kitchen was too much. The service was good and I thought that the man in charge was a delivery man until I was told he was the owner...I think his appearance could have matched his importance. So disappointed will not be going back sorry. Waitresses were smart and very friendly and efficient. Music was too loud for the size of the restaurant and killed our conversation. Come on Bistro Mondos you can do better than that if you want to do business with the locals and their visitors.

This was our second trip to Mondo's this time to celebrate my birthday, and we weren't disappointed. The music from Phoenix J was wonderful jazzy and sassy! The food was even better than last time with their new Portuguese chef. I had Duck breast cooked with a blackberry, raspberry and red currant sauce with dauphinoise potatoes, and my husband had a ribeye steakboth cooked to perfection. The cheese board was amazing. We shall certainly be returning againand would recommend to all.

I have now eaten in this restaurant 5 times and have never been disappointed ! The food is beautifully cooked and presented with the ingredients sourced from local suppliers. The music in the background is just at the right level, you can hear it, but hold a conversation easily over it.We have taken friends there and they have taken their family and friends there - word of mouth (apart from Trip Advisor) is usually the best recommendation! It is nice to have a 'proper' restaurant in Ross instead of having to rely on hotels and pubs for a meal out.The menu changes frequently and it has a lovely ambiance and decor and the staff are friendly and helpful. Tasha is a model of quiet efficiency and calm. The wine list has a good choice and variety and they serve Stowford Press cider on tap (for all us 'real' cider drinkers out there!). We will be eating there on a regular basis! it is also open lunchtimes for coffees and light bites and the bar is open in the evening for people who just want to socialise ! They often have music evenings there with different performers which are very popular!

My Wife and I went because we saw a musician friend was appearing there. Hadn't seen it before, and it was an absolutely lovely experience. We hadn't booked, didn't faze them, found a lovely table, and the service for the evening, from the young Gentleman, and Lady, was at just the right level - efficient, and pleasant, not too in your face or formal, and this was the same later in the evening with Nick the Owner, I assume, when enquiring how everything was.Well, everything was lovely, my Wifes Pork Tenderloin, and my Rosini, and a very nice cheese assortment. The Music was first rate, sound level excellent, talk or listen, and a very pleasant atmosphere. I would recommend a visit (music or not, which appears to be monthly), and we shall certainly be returning at an early opportunity.

As a declaration of interest I've been to this venue several times, but professionally, as the 'roadie' to an act performing there. So in passing, if in a biased way, may I commend Bistro Mondo for its support of live music, and recommend these special evenings to anyone seeking a full dine-out and entertainment experience. However last night was purely personal. A dark, dank winter's night in Ross-on-Wye, but with the kids taking over the house for a party I took my wife out as a surprise having seen tantalising dishes waft past before (they also do Tapas nights), and we fancied a 'special night out'. The decor is already a beacon of warmth and light to greet you, but the staff act in perfect complement from the moment you walk in. Attentive and friendly, but unobtrusive. It is an 'intimate' venue, which makes it perfect for two, but we have seen much bigger parties easily accommodated. The meal was just perfect and arrived piping hot after just the right time to savour an aperitif and chat. We started with the Thai fishcakes, which are breaded and offer a subtle flavour of the spices from that country. For mains my wife had the Chicken Piri-Piri and I opted for the Lamb Marrakesh. Both stews basically, so great to swap and compare. And both delicious! The portions were generous and the flavours a lovely, varied tour of diverse global cuisines. Pricing reasonable for the experience, ambiance and calibre of cooking.

I would recommend this restaurant to others highly (After reading and hearing some mixed reviews I was unsure what to expect) - however my partner and I were both greeted with a warm welcome, helpful staff, and were impressed with the lovely and original decor. We had the £10 for 3 courses meal - having Parsnip Soup & Roll /a Greek Salad/ Orange PanacottaPate on toast / Spaghetti Bolagnese / Lemon TartAll our food was served in a polite manner with attention to detail on the portion size and presentation. All the right temperature and very enjoyable. We were very pleased and it was a lovely anniversary meal. I hope others who were unhappy before give this place a second chance as you will see how good it is. Good luck and hope you do well here in Ross. We shall be back again happily.

Our first impression of Bistro Mondo was what a nicely decorated and well finished environment. We anticipated that our food would be in keeping with the attention to detail that had clearly been lavished upon the décor and surroundings. We were certainly not disappointed! A great choice of food from around the world was offered on the menu. Our choices of food were served piping hot and well presented. Went to Mondo for their Christmas Tapas night. Excellent range of quality tapas served by cheerful and attentive staff who actually wanted to be there ( unusual at this time of year). Musical accompaniment from a duo ( lady singer, male guitarist). The guitarist was absolutely brilliant and worth listening to on his own. A great night was had by one and all. Then we went in on christmas eve just for a drink and were greeted with the same degree of hospitality. Marvelous. They have a good selection of beers and spirits as well. We shall certainly return.

Two of us ate dinner here last night and had a lovely meal in what is a very pleasant restaurant. The menu has a nice choice of dishes which are all reasonably priced and the wine choice, although not extensive, is extremely well priced. If anything, the portions were a little big for me, I chose to have the tomato & basil soup, which was very tasty and clearly freshly made. I requested a starter size portion of pasta for my main and couldn't eat it all, even though it was really lovely, it was just slightly too big for my little appetite. My husband had 3 courses and thoroughly enjoyed them all, the cheese board was packed with cheese, biscuits, grapes, olives and chutney. The service was excellent and there was a really nice buzzy atmosphere. The décor is warm and welcoming as are the waiting staff. We would recommend and when we re-visit Ross on Wye, we would definitely return to Bistro Mondo.

Restaurant is on the outside of an industrial estate, out of the city centre, however the quality and taste of the food is lovely. Price of food is also reasonable. Plenty of customers, which is a good sign. Owner Ali, is an excellent chef and went round to each table to ensure everyone was happy. Only downside is the location, which is why I have given 4 stars.
