We were so impressed with this place, we stopped in for coffee (great Flat White with oat milk), we booked for that evening and we went back for a Sunday Roast the following day, too! The evening, we both had a three course meal. The arancinI is divine (had it both times!). We both had the Belly Pork (fabulous!), then my husband had the Frangipani and didn’t stop raving about it, so we had that again after our roast the following day. We ate very well! Great selection of wine/cocktails. I had a Hugo, delicious and with our roast beef, a rather fabulous bottle of Malbec. Best roast in ages! Hard to beat. Staff great too, a real gem of a place. There was a wedding on the Sunday but service was unaffected. So glad we tried you out but you definitely need to book, place was packed.

Dined here on Monday the 10th of June; we have been here before and we loved it. Years down the line and it was Possibly the worst experience we’ve ever had. There were only 4 tables dining. It was disheartening and sad to see a staff member singling out our table in an obvious manner; she asked all other tables how their meals were but never attempted to engage or look at us. Our dishes were shoved at us; she even realised when the fish cake was tossed to the other side of the plate and no apology was given. We were a table of different ethnicities and we never thought about being left to feel different but @ this place we did. It really hurts to see us being treated badly when all white tables are given the utmost importance and attention. She did not even make an attempt to hide her attitude and actions. This will stay with us forever because we have never ever been made to feel different in any hospitality setting and luckily this doesn’t happen often. Its sad to say we will never be returning.

Staying in Newton Abbot for business, I happened across this place. I ordered the burger and it was served hot and freshly made. The beer was very good. It was however, in my opinion, quite pricey! Over £6 for a pint! The burger was nearly £18. Whilst it was lovely and well needed after a full on day, I just feel there was something missing. Service was very professional.

Too many reasons to list from the over priced food, which lacks flavour and presentation, to a number of unavailable items on the menu. It's also not very good for vegan options, but we thought we would give it try for Mother's Day. Some of the food was ok and some of it was really sad. Top of a bread cake with some overcooked oyster mushrooms for 7.95! Sadly we had to send something back as it was not as advertised, which they were happy to do. However, this made the billing confusing as this wasn't shown on the receipt. In fact the receipt didn't represent what we had at all, but they claimed it made everything cheaper, so I trusted them. After checking the receipt in good light, as the printing was very faint, when I got home I realised there had been a futher mistake. When I called back the next day there was only one member of staff there and she couldn't deal with the situation in full. Taya tried on our first call and was very apologetic about the misunderstanding. Although she couldn't understand the receipt either but suggested that they made it cheaper this way, which wasn't true (I added it up separately). Taya did call her manager to see how to deal with it but on the return call later on she then became frusutrated, rude and said she had other customers to deal with and she couldn't help me anymore, I was told a manager would call me back another day to sort this out and I am still waiting for that call - how cowardly. I guess they don't like to deal with these things and send other workers to be their 'voice'. I think good businesses really prevail when they deal with a mistake or discrepency well and all I wanted was to understand the charges and have them rectified. However, Bickley Mill and Taya chose not to help me and on the second call even laughed at my misunderstanding of the receipt. Taya also told me there wasn't any channel to complain about this service, so all I can do is write it on here. All I wanted was to check what we had been charged for, but left the conversation out of pocket, having had terrible customer service experience and therefore we will never return. Do yourself a favour and choose somewhere that will treat you better, rather than act like they are doing you a favour! There are so many other places to eat in the surrounding area, why not go and try them?

Currently staying here for 3 nights on business. Having read the review below I feel I must add my view on the situation. Whilst I cannot comment on the matter of the bill I can comment on the young lady (Taya) who was on the phone for a good ten minutes whilst we were waiting to check in. Obviously I could not hear the full conversation but I clearly remember listening to the member of staff (Taya) and thinking how pleasing it was to hear a young lady handle the conversation both professionally and compassionately and not once did she laugh or react rudely. We also ate here last night (5 in our party) and the food we asked for on the menu was both available and very tasty. Was it pricey? Look at what you pay for a burger at a harvester then compare. We regularly stay here when we are down on a business trip and will continue to do so as it’s a lovely place to stay and we have found that the staff are always very helpful and polite.

Had a lovely lunch today at Bickley Mill. It was valentines day and our wedding anniversary, so a special day for us. On arriving we were welcomed and shown to a table which was nice but didn't feel very valentines. I asked the waitress if we could move to another table in adjoining room that was perfect. This was no problem and we had a really lovely three course lunch with great food and really good attentive service. Our main waitress , Sophie, was so lovely and really made our lunch feel special. So thank you Bickley and Sophie for such a special valentines lunch.

We used to come here a lot as a couple over quite a few years and enjoyed the place. Now coming back as a family the experience is different. The menu is poor for vegetarians, add a vegetarian child to that and it's terrible. A (lacklustre) adult meal portioned down to a children's size is the only option and it shows lack of imagination or care. We even called ahead and asked if options could be adapted, to be met with disinterest. Atmosphere is also a bit sombre for children. So overall, I think this will remain firmly in our couple days and we won't return as a family.

Food was very disappointing. The menu wasn't particularly varied to be honest. Two people had the ham pie, which came with a great dollop of non creamy mash, and a dish of unattractive whole unseasoned carrots and brocolli. The gnocchi was very stodgy. We had a visitor from Australia so not a good advert for our cuisine. Very pleasant staff though. 30th May 2023

We got married at Bickley Mill on new years eve. As a wedding venue it is idyllic and beautiful and their staff members were polite and helpful but our day was not as promised. I was waiting to leave a review until I got a response from Bickley but my 1st response wasn't as expected and I haven't even had a second response. My husband and I booked our wedding 15 months in advance and were so grateful when Bickley told us they wouldn't have their usual new years eve party and we could have the whole place if we also booked out all of the rooms which we obviously agreed to. We spread the food news yo all of our fanily and friends we were extatic. On our wedding days things weren't as they should be. We noticed we didn't have the whole of Bickley they were still open to the public not only that my husband and many of our guests who were seated in the main bar area were turned away from the bar and told they couldn't be served despite us having paid for an extended licence until 1am due to it being new year. The smaller bar didn't stock all the drinks people wanted which was extremely frustrating and embarrassing. I was embarrassingly asked to point out my new husband who was stood next yo me holding an umbrella over me. My parents and multiple guests didn't receive their welcome drinks. The food was fantastic and our wedding breakfast went down a treat. However we picked a buffet for the evening as with it being new year we thought people could pick at this throughout with it being a long day we got married at 2. This was meant ro be in the function room but was set up outside with no announcement ro the guests. Plates full of food were then removed after 45 minutes when myself and my husband and many others had noticed it was out there. 100's of pounds wasted and hungry guests but apparently this is health and safety. I feel this should have been communicated as was extremely disappointing and wasteful if we'd have known this in advance we coukd have looked at other options. Finally our daughter was supposed to have an adjoining room to her nan but when we got there this wasn't the case so she had do be in a room by herself which made us feel uncomfortable. Communication from the wedding planner definitely could have been better and an apology wouldn't go a miss. These things aren't good enough we saved a long time for our special day and expected things to be perfect. This is no reflection on the staff they were friendly and hospitable

The gnocchi with supposedly home made pesto, and I can believe it, with tender stem broccoli on it was the best. The port loin was dry, both said it needed some kind of sauce, amazed it didnt come with one to be honest, some kind of a sharp and rich sauce.Fishcakes were dry, but OK.Ham hock terrine was good, mushrooms on brioche used a marsala cream sauce, not normal, but not bad, its a good sauce. Sea bass was OK.It is a lot better than it was a few years ago, but it needs more still. Service was good, and the interior very well done.

The Bickley Mill has changed over the years but is still a beautiful pub in a gorgeous location. Pretty gardens at multiple levels allow you to drink outside with a level of privacy. The staff were pleasant and attentive but the food was a little ‘lack lustre’.The grilled Halloumi starter was served with stone cold pre-grilled cheese and a very small amount. Yes it was a starter but it wasn’t even one slice of Halloumi. The chicken pie main was very nice but the side of vegetables had not been drained properly and were floating in water. All in all it was a little disappointing, just a little tweak here and there would make this pub perfect.

We stayed for two nights last week, the room was rather small but very modern and tastefully furnished with a good sized bathroom with walk in shower, spotlessly clean and excellent Covid measures being taken. We had dinner on the first night, which was nice. Breakfast on both mornings was lovely and plenty of it, the staff were lovely, very good service and very friendly. We thought the room would be noisy as there seemed to be a service room next door, but once we went to bed at night it was fine and we slept very well. The weather wasn’t good so we weren’t able to take advantage of the lovely garden, the setting is quite remote down a lane, but only about 10 minutes drive from Kingskerkswell and Abbotskerkswell where we had dinner on the second night. All in all a very enjoyable short break after lockdown.

Went with a party of seven to celebrate a reunion four weeks ago. The hotel itself is excellent but the dinner was less so. Although it was only half full on a Tuesday evening, the service and food was distinctly average. Each course took ages to appear and the cooked food was on the whole not up to the standard you would expect (you can't really make a mistake with ice cream). I had a steak and it was quite tough but I didn't complain because I didn't want to embarrass my friend who had arranged the evening. Other friends felt the same. Asked for a repeat coffee order later on and the waitress said that she would be with me in "a couple of minutes" but never re-appeared so I had to go to the bar to reorder. My friend who had organised the evening was apologetic to us all when he shouldn't have had to apologise.I have been to Bickley Mill half a dozen times in the last two years and I'm sorry to say that each visit has seen a deterioration in both the food and service. I cannot see that Covid -19 is an excuse because the restaurant was only half full and there was a reduced menu (which wss fair enough). My wife and I will not be returning and the others felt the same.

Great location, lots of outdoor space which is ideal right now. We arrived today and wandered around to the bar area as no obvious place to go from the side we came in at.Four bar staff and not one acknowledgement. No hello, nothing.Eventually another staff member arrived and took our name and showed us to our table. We could see tables outside and asked if they were reserved. We were told not but no table service. No problem. The suns out it’s perfect during Covid to be in space.I went back inside to place my order. No issues. We both ordered beef roast lunch. Couldn’t fault it. Great food, all the veg was good and we asked for extra gravy, also no issue. It was that good, I’d made a comment to my wife that we finished our food before another couple who started before us.When we finished, our plates were on our table for 25 minutes!! The other couple had their plates cleared before ours. Staff came out and delivered food to another part of the outside which I couldn’t see up the hill. When they came back down, they just looked and went back inside.Another member of staff brought drinks out for a table beside us and again walked past us and didn’t clear the table but she did clear the glasses from two empty tables on the way back in.Very poor.Only ordering dessert prompted a clearing of our table. We had no checks after we were served. For pudding I ordered the brownie which was more of a cake and my wife ordered the crumble. Both were ok. Not as good as lunch but I think the service let the whole experience down. The staff are all female and all young and seemingly inexperienced so lacked in the obvious clearing and checking on tables. When we paid and asked ‘was everything ok’ I didn’t mention the wait on clearance and instead of an apology we got ‘well it’s outside so it’s hard to keep track’Unfortunately my wife and I have both worked in hospitality and outside/inside - no excuse.Real shame. But I would recommend the Sunday roast!

Me and my girlfriend had a fantastic meal at the Bickley Mill on 17th August 2020. Unlike some other restaurants that are using the eat out to help out scheme they haven't held back from providing a great experience. A smaller menu than pre lockdown perhaps but certainly there's no restriction on the quality of the food, all the ingredients and style of a bistro in Shoreditch all with that Devonshire twist. Added to that the kindness and efficiently of all the staff to make it all round a very enjoyable evening out.

My wife and I stayed two nights at Bickley Mill Inn. It’s clean, warm and comfortable: and the staff without exception were friendly and efficient. I guess it must be hard to stock a kitchen at such a quiet time of year, which is perhaps why the evening menu was not extensive. The first night there were six other diners: the second night one. We had, over the two evenings, beetroot and goats cheese risotto (okay), belly pork (okay), individual beef and ale pie (good) and chocolate orange cheesecake (very good). My overall impression was that it’s competent, good pub food - but nothing to get excited about. Nothing to complain about, but nothing to travel a long way especially for either. Breakfast is also limited if you don’t want anything cooked - yoghourt, granola, and individual packets of cornflakes, coco pops or weetabix. Oh, and prunes. I opted for scrambled egg and smoked salmon, but after a couple of mouthfuls had to say to the waitress that it was not right. Not because of the egg, which was over cooked; but because of the salmon which tasted odd and smelled of ammonia. She was extremely apologetic and offered an alternative: and came back from the kitchen with the chef’s apologies as well. The staff are one of this establishment’s best assets, and made us feel very welcome.

Having visited Bickley Mill to dine quite a few times over the last few years I have to say we were bitterly disappointed after our most recent visit. The menus choices if you happen to have dietary requirements are very restricted. The size of portions with a view to value for money ....poor. There was a severe lack of vegetables offered with any of the meals. The evening we dined lacked atmosphere, partly due to only a very few other diners. The decoration is attractive and welcoming but it ended there! We would not choose to return.

Needed some time out. Had a fantastic meal –not just the food but the service was brilliant. First time I’ve been asked would you like some time before the main course is prepared - and I did. Thank you Natalie for your excellent service service and your great hospitality.

Took my Mum for lunch here today on arrival found they were hosting a Wedding so was unsure if they would be able to accommodate us. But after asking at the Bar no problem at all, shown to the restaurant where we could choose where to sit all the staff friendly and attentive would not have known they were obviously very busy as hosting a Wedding. Chose the battered haddock and chips for both of us , quick service and food delicious finished off with white chocolate panacotta with honeycomb. Haven't been here for a meal for a good couple of years but will definitely come back and strongly recommend thank you we thoroughly enjoyed it!

Came here for a post wedding meal with family. Eight of us all together. There was something on the menu for everyone (including our vegan guests).

A lovely Christmas lunch at this warm & cosy restaurant. We were a party of seven, five of whom were either blind or visually impaired, the venue was very accessible with no hazards. We all enjoyed our food & the extra veg was delicious. It did become a little noisy (not a problem) so we moved to the bar to enjoy coffee & additional drinks, could of stayed longer but some had to catch trains. The waiting staff were very kind & understanding, nothing was too much trouble. Hoping to return, there could be more of us!

Went for Sunday lunch. Having stayed at Bickley Mill ten years ago and enjoyed it, we looked forward to the experience. We were seated next to the hotel access which was so busy that day it felt like sitting in a corridor. I asked for a vegan meal and was offered only one dish, which I didn’t fancy. On the menu was a quinoa and grilled vegetable salad topped with halloumi (this is the way it was worded), so I asked if I could have that without the halloumi. The waiter replied somewhat sarcastically “So you want halloumi salad without the halloumi?”. I overlooked his rudeness and ordered it. When it came, the vegetables were barely warmed through and mostly courgette and red onion - and a very small portion. Even so, it was so unappetising that I left most of it. My friends’ portions were very small - and hardly fine quisine. When we finished the meal, we waited so long for any attention, we had to go to the bar to ask for the bill. Will not be returning.

We love everything about this place, the location, the food, the service, everything. It’s a double edged sword though because it wouldn’t be the same if it was over run by people. I recommend it only to my favourite people and keep it to myself with everyone else....

Visiting the Bickley Mill Inn was a very pleasant experience and an easy walk from our B&B.; More a restaurant than a pub, Bickley Mill is a warm, welcoming setting with excellent food and friendly, responsive staff. We saw immediately that it's a popular place where people go to have a good time, whether for drinks and a casual meal or a big event. Certainly good value for money.

Would love to have given 5 stars but for rushed checkout on the Sunday morning after my daughters wedding weekend we were all told to be at breakfast at 9-00am sharp and by the time we had finished it was about 9-50am my son has 2 very very young kids and was expected to vacate the room by 10-30 when I mentioned to the elderly grey haired cleaner it was not good and was rushed for a young family she rudely replied at the Premiere Inns you check out even earlier and implying as long as you’re out by 10-30 I don’t care I replied that Premier Inns charge £70.00 per night we had booked all the bedrooms at the hotel and it had cost us thousands we were then told we could have had a late checkout for my son but this was never mentioned to us so make sure you ask for it the day before I suggest the management speak to this rude cleaner about customer service but the rest of the staff were great and the venue superb for a wedding so Thank you all for a great time at the Mill

We went to Bickley Mill Inn at the weekend for a wedding and it was the nicest wedding I have ever been to. They seamlessly and effortless converted the spaces for the different moods of the day, and catered for everyone effortlessly in-between. I can't comment on the food as we didn't eat at the Wedding Breakfast, but the bar staff and management were excellent throughout the event. Enough people on bar at all times and it was never too much trouble for anything. Really great venue for small intimate weddings, lots of different spaces to use. Really lovely venue, I would recommend for any country small weddings or get aways.

Our recent visit to The Buckley Mill will certainly be our last. The appalling rudeness of the acting manager spoilt our evening and resulted in us leaving without even taking a seat at our table or ordering food.

Our group visited this place for a family gathering and a double birthday experience. The evening was spoiled by the Managers attitude towards a person who, I think, had asked if someone could take the orders of his group in order to assist the kitchen. After some verbal exchanges the Manager screamed at this person " Get Out" or something like that and made an awful atmosphere and spoiled what should have been a very pleasant evening. Needless to say I will NOT be returning to this venue when the Manager treats customers like this.

Walked from Devon Mill, first time visit. Lovely tasteful decor really nice outdoor space. Service staff v friendly helpful and professional. Food Top Quality and delicious.Really enjoyed scallops pork belly and pea puree,my wife had crayfish cocktail, along with a really nice bread side, followed by lovely crisp haddock with really nice chips and a pea puree which was v flavourful.Nothing overstated, the shared dessert of chocolate and raspberry brownie with vanilla icecream and a chocolate shard was successfully cleared and we were both full to bursting. Thanks to the Chef and Service staff for being so accommodating.

Excellent fishmongers and deli. The fish is excellent. Love their scallops. Their Taramasalata is a favourite of ours with some nice bread. Very simple, but makes one of my favourite lunches. Always friendly and always good. Google just asked me to update my review. Nothing to add. As good as it always has been.
