Waited 40 minutes for our food (breakfast) and it was clear that the young staff ‘feared’ the man / cook in the kitchen . I’m my view his attitude was not acceptable and he came across as a bully just watching how he spoke with the staff and their reaction. Other than that the food was good, abd the young staff were all friendly and pleasant, but I don’t think I would go back purely because of how the staff were treated.

I have lived in kilkeel for 7 years and this is the only place I have had a meal and haven’t been up all night with cramps in my stomach and every time I have been in for a meal we have been served and eaten our meals and paid within a hour which I think is great service just wish it was open all year round :)

This establishment really is the bottom of the barrel. It’s unbelievable how badly the place is run, the staff are all extremely young looking and very obviously haven’t been trained to a good extent. It seems like the place is just being run completely by a bunch of children. The food was horrendous and barely eatable. The burgers we got came out raw, they had to be returned it was that bad. The oil mustn’t get changed that often because the other food was overly greasy. It seems like there’s no proper chef or anyone with cooking experience in the kitchen. The staff really don’t have a clue what they are doing. However, it is difficult to blame the staff for how bad the place is when they are all so young. One has to ask where the management is because they are nowhere to been seen and there’s no one there with a bit of experience. All in all, this place is not somewhere I would recommend to anyone. It is far handier to drive into town and eat out, at least there you’ll get properly cooked food.

Hi I went to beachcomber today with my daughter and son, Daughter had bbq wing and we’re beautiful and loads of them for the price. Son had a ice cream which he asked for chocolate chip and got vanilla so I asked the young girl out front did he not ask for chocolate chip and she said he didn’t, there was another member of staff sitting beside us she was having a break I assume she was eating but she never had a break people were asking her everything while she was eating but this lady asked the girl to give my son chocolate Ice cream, I told her it was ok to have your break the young girl did give my son ice cream but came and took the other ice cream away which is ok because he doesn’t eat vanilla but she made a really smart comment along the line of “I’ll f eat it myself” This lady is still eating her lunch and calls another girl and tells her to refund us because of the attitude of the other girl, Which was very kind of her, God love that woman I was in for about 30mins and she couldn’t sit at peace people were coming and going from her, I don’t no if she is the owner or just a worker but I would like to thank her for dealing with this while on her break, Over all food and ice cream was beautiful but customer service needs to improve out front of your cafe

I put in an order for a large chip, chicken goujons and onion rings. It was ages before I got my order. When I opened it up you could hardly see the goujons- they were so small- more like a portion for a small child. On the other hand the onion rings were cut really thick and looked like bowls rather than rings! The chips were the best part of the meal. Really disappointed with the wait, chicken goujon portion size and the enormous greasy onion ‘rings’.

Called to beachcomber on Monday for lunch with the kids. Food was delicious myself and kids gives thumbs up. Only disappointed was the girl that took our order her hair went all over the table when taking the kids meals down. I actually found one of her hairs on the table when she left.

Went for a nice spin on my bike today from Carlingford to Cranfield and stopped for lunch at Beachcomber Cafe I was very impressed with the ‘beach casual’ decor and I really enjoyed my choice of BBQ Chicken and Pineapple Panini! Service was very friendly and it was a very enjoyable experience all round...

Well, just to clarify for those of you who may not know, The Beachcomber is not actually in Kilkeel but a few miles down the road at one of the Chesnut owned caravan park sites situated at Cranfield beach. It is right at the entrance to the park and there is ample parking to the front right of the building but at peak times (and when the weathers good) it may be tricky to get a space.. Now your initial thoughts of a caravan park 'chippy' may not be great and your expectations are no doubt low so boy will the Beachcomber surprise you! Yes you will get the normal 'something' with chips and the offering of kids meals in the same theme but you also get a specials menu each day as well as the option of a couple of types of fry as well as tea/coffee, tray bakes or ice-cream. And not only does the menu sound good-it tastes good and is very well presented as well! I have eaten here over a dozen times in the last 3 years, as we often visit the beach with the kids, and never once been disappointed! Genuinely a hidden gem. I do have 2 small critiques though-sadly, the food in the cafe is almost so much nicer than the takeaway even though the kitchen is shared and, my biggest gripe, they don't open on a Sunday even during peak season! Please, please rsolve this!

One recent evening I found myself sitting across from my companion in the Beachcomber once again. I was excited for my meal - little did I realise I would be thoroughly disappointed. The presentation which I had been so impressed by last time had plummeted. What once was served in newspapers and charming patterned papers now lay negligently in the bottom of a sad tin bucket. Asides the presentation, the meal lacked flavour. Disappointing. My companion was also extremely dissatisfied. Overall, my experience at the Beachcomber was very mediocre, and very overpriced. I most likely won’t be going back.

I entered The Beachcomber at about 5:45 with my good friend. We were immediately seated and given menus by an extremely polite young waitress, who came back in only five minutes, ready to take our orders. Our food arrived in a matter of minutes. A small disclaimer - The Beachcomber was almost empty when we arrived, and so that may be the cause of the extremely quick service. However, I was still thoroughly impressed. The food came, and my chips and chicken nuggets were fabulous. My accomplice, however, was a little less lucky. Her gammon steak was honestly the saltiest thing I’ve ever tasted - even saltier than my close friends. Asides the saltiest, he gammon steak was rather good - very tender and juicy. The toilets were clean. Overall, The Beachcomber was good. However, I must warn fellow consumers about the prices. Unbelievable. My friends gammon steak with a side of chips, although it was very good, was £9.95. I ordered a child’s meal, and it still came to £5.50. I do not believe these prices are appropriate for the type of clientele in the area - caravaners and campers looking for a cheap but delicious meal. Asides this, the staff were courteous and polite, and my meal, personally, was amazing, if a little out of my budget.

First time to Cranfield over Bank Holiday Monday weekend. My family & I wanted to try The Beachcomber on our last night. We arrived at 5.30pm, there were several customers standing around the till area, so it wasn't clear if they were waiting to be shown to a table, to pay, or to collect from the takeaway service. We stood for 20 minutes, during which time the 2 very young and inexperienced-looking staff members didn't come over, hand us a menu, or apologise for the delay in seating us. My husband eventually lifted a menu, having checked with a staff member if it was ok to do so and we decided to seat ourselves. There were no kids' menus, so I went to the counter to ask the staff, and was told they were being reprinted, but gave me a choice of food options nonetheless. Having made our meal choices, we waited another 15-or-so minutes for someone to come and take our order. Again, it felt like no one bothered, despite the staff walking past us with other orders. Again, I went to the counter to let the staff know that we were ready to order, to be told that the kitchen was closed and no further orders were being taken! No apology!! The 2 very young "front of house" staff looked completely out of their depth and there was no sign of management to direct them. All in all, a really negative experience, so we won't be back 🙁

Called for coffee a couple of days ago. This cafe seems to be run by a few wee girls with absolutely no training, direction or interest. However the food on the plates going past us looked great so we thought we would go back. We went again for coffee and a bowl of soup. Soup was ok, it was supposed to be served with Guinness wheaten bread but came out with the tiny end of a plain rock hard wheaten and no butter, wasn’t even worth picking up. This was apart from the actual length of time it took for it to get to the table and then we had to ask for a spoon to eat it with. The coffee took ages because the waitress didn’t know how to operate the coffee machine which is fair enough and everyone has to learn. However after her third time steaming the milk over the worktop and onto the floor perhaps it would have been advisable for someone else to give it a go. A slightly more mature presence on the floor might prevent the aimless wanderings of the “staff”. They were painful to watch. The visit was disheartening and off putting and we won’t be back, not even for the great looking food.

We are currently staying in a neighbouring caravan site and decided to celebrate my birthday with a meal in the beachcomber last night. We arrived at around 6.30pm and there were no tables free, my husband asked a young male staff member with dark hair if we could wait for a table and he snapped angrily that there were no tables and turned his back to us. We decided to wait outside for 10mins as we had a buggy and a 3yr old, to save the kids running around the restaurant while we waited. While we were waiting outside 2 more couples went inside looking for a table. After 10-15mins we saw a table finish and get up to pay so i went inside to see if we could be seated yet and was told by a female staff member that there were 2 couples in the queue before us (these were the couples who arrived after us) and if we wanted a table we would have to sit outside. It was quite windy with a threat of rain but our 3yr old was looking forward to mums birthday party and we didn't want to disappoint the kids by having to go back to the caravan for toast and beans, so we agreed to sit outside (hoping that a table would clear inside while we ordered). The female staff member who took our order was lovely and very helpful and assured us as soon as a table inside became available we could have it, and sure enough we did. This staff member served us our meal and was very attentive and very good at her job. When we finished our meal we waited for 15-20mins for someone to clear our table and take our dessert order as the kids were looking forward to some chocolate cake and ice cream. In this time the tables all around us were cleared and reset and we were ignored, i beckoned the young male staff member with the dark hair that had been unhelpful when we first asked for a table over and he ignored me. I eventually got up and went to the desk to enquire about a dessert, he snapped at me angrily again that there was no desserts, so i asked if i could possibly just have 2 lattes to our table instead and he tutted and rolled his eyes and said 'right' . I was shocked by how openly rude and unhelpful this young man was to us from the moment we arrived at the beachcomber, the kids didn't get their cake because he told us there was none and then as we were paying a waitress walked past us with a slice of chocolate cake! My kids went home very upset that they didnt get their cake and ice cream and i was really upset about how rude this guy had been to me every time i spoke to him. He really did ruin the evening for us and the food didnt really matter anymore because we felt so uncomfortable every time we needed something. It was a horrible experience that we won't be repeating again and will make sure the other caravanners know to avoid aswell.

I'm sorry to have to say it but I have visited the beachcomber on my many trips to cranfield and always found it to be a place to relax and enjoy good food with a great atmosphere. However, on my most recent visit I was very saddened to see that this beautiful little beachside cafe has lost its charm and quality of food. Firstly, the portion size has been reduced to half, with prices still the same if not higher. The quality of food has greatly deteriorated. The atmosphere is subdued and above all the warm welcome that we used to receive from the friendly waitresses no longer exists. We always looked forward to seeing the familiar faces from year to year but everything now has changed, food, service and charm, and not for the better! After enquiring I've been informed that the beachcomber has changed hands leading to nothing but disappointment!! Unfortunately I will not be returning to the beachcomber.

Since the beachcomber has recently been taken over by new management the food is first class. I have dined here a few times now and the fish and chips are the nicest I've tasted in a long time. Burgers are also delicious and kids enjoyed the chicken nuggets. Staff nice and friendly and prices reasonable. Definitely recommend.

Service was the worst at our stay in the hotel, staff were asked twice on drink order took 45 minutes also our friend found a hair in her chicken curry which puts a question of the hygiene rate in the kitchen, also staff didn’t know anything about the menu and staff weren’t informed on what was on the menu. The food we had was lovely and the atmosphere was perfectly fine. Credits to the lady with the ginger hair she done everything we had asked her and knew her job role very well The hair in the food problem was resolved with a discount much appreciated but still believe regulations need to be made.

Lovely food and great for families. The menu is traditional Irish food, really tasty. Potential for entertainment with music, and can book for large gatherings.
