The Genoa Cafe in Newry and Mourne

i was at the genoa warrenpoint 15/2/2021 put an order in for two small chips it took them 20 minutes + to hand the chips to me the restaurant was not busy , when i got home i rang them ask for the manager i spoke to him he said that the chips should only take five minutes, the manager had to get his mummy to ring me and she said she was the owner, i told her how long i had to wait she then said i got the chips in 7 minutes and she changed it to 15 minutes that was a lie, the man that took my order was more interested messing about with the girl at the back then frying fish & chips, i also had no mask on not once did they say anything to me about it, the manager and his mummy the owner was very IGNORANT, badly run restaurant , bring back the old owners, my advice go to fryer tucks or country fried chicken church st warrenpoint, you wil get your chips less then five minutes, WE WONT BE BACK AT GENOA.

Terribly disappointed with that which I witnessed here tonight. The server was wearing her face mask like a beard. She was handling cash and then food, no gloves, touching her face and uniform without sanitising her hands. The sanitizer was plentiful and beside her work station. She exchanged food parcels with builders, again no sanitising was happening. The builders were not wearing face masks. The food parcels were returned to food preparation areas and still no sanitising could be seen. When I spoke with the manager, who was very apologetic the server stood there smirking behind her. I would feel sorry for the poor manager having to try and deal with someone like that on my team. On a basic level there was poor food safety measures in place. A complete lack of HACCP training given what I witnessed, and clearly no thought for Covid guidelines. Utterly disgusting given the current pandemic

I’ve eaten food here for many years but I have to highly commend Team Genoa on the high standard of food service and safety especially during Covid.The food just keeps getting better The new style batter on their award winning Fish was just amazing.Highly recommend for a takeaway Treat.They follow all the Rules provided to ensure each and every customer and staff members are protected.

I asked the young waitress if the fish was fresh. She said it was frozen. I asked if the pizza was frozen. She said the dough was delivered to them and it was freshly made. She, then, returned from the kitchen and said the fish was fresh frozen at sea, then asked if I still wanted the pizza. LOL. Maybe I should have chosen the fresh frozen fish because the pizza base was undercooked, the sauce unseen, the ham processed and thinly sliced as in a package sold at grocery stores for sandwiches. The pineapple pieces were from a tin. The gelato was crystalized, but OK.

Was met at door by loud coarse lady. Said they were open but keep distance at tables. Toilets closed. Crazy.I ordered a burger with fried onions and a latte coffee.Took a while. They put the ketchup on themselves. too much. Yuk.Coffee was ok but both nothing special.Still I expected that. Staff are rough and ready.But hey it is a chippy and ice cream parlour.At 7.35 stg,not that cheap.But Warrenpoint is busy spot. I recommend it.

Consistently high standard of homemade food....one of the best frys around...and the burgers are so meaty You have to try the Genoa ice cream, and the daim milk-shake...amazing

Great place to eat ice cream and chill. Opens late and the vibe inside the cafe is great. Reasonable prices for both food and ice cream. Brilliant service by the professional staff. Ice cream to die for. Very clean and welcoming environment. Great for families. Take out and eat in. Can’t recover s highly enough

Very disappointed in my first and last visit for food. Service was extremely poor. Sat for 15mins before being acknowledged and it was generally slow overall. I’ve nothing positive to write about the food except the portion size was generous. The food we had seemed so greasy and salty. Even the pizza! I’ve heard reports that the fish is to rival others in the town but it was dried up and chewy. Very disappointed!

This place is consistently excellent. Fresh, homemade wholesome food which is very tasty. The portion sizes are very generous and there is great service. Plan to return soon with my family.

We popped in for a bit of lunch, the food was excellent, especially the fish & chips!!! The staff were brilliant, as we were leaving the lady at the counter gave my niece and i a free ice-cream. Thank you.

We thought we’d try it, having been to the PitStop in Kilkeel just a few nights ago. The differences between them are stark. Service here was lax, the seating wasn’t comfy, the fish and chips were not as well-cooked and certainly not as crisp, hot and tasty, but the worst of all was that it was almost double the price when we factor in the fact that the Kilkeel deal includes a soft drink. I really dislike being ripped off and this is a rip off. The price difference would cover the fuel cost for the extra 24 mile round trip. Far better fish bites, chips and a soft drink which was £3 a head cheaper in PitStop Kilkeel. The plates here also had a small amount of salad (see photo) which was incongruous on the plate given the fact we were eating deep-fried, battered food. If we had ordered a fish & chip meal deal we would have had tea, bread and butter. The addition of these nominal cost tea & bread items would have added another fiver a head. Just wrong. In short and sadly it’s poor value and it’s also below average quality and we will not return. We were also the only sit in diners - quelle surprise.

Whenever we're in Warrenpoint, we love to get chips and an ice cream to takeaway, and sit around the front shore enjoying them. The chips are great - hot, as salty as you want, wrapped in paper (the fish is also very good) - and taste even better looking out over the lough.

Arrived to this town and asked someone were to get good fish and chip pointed me to the Genoa and I was definitely surprised to see such a nice chip shop clean and modern and the fish and chips were fresh fabulous service was also great the girls couldn’t do enough will definitely be back well done

A good local Cafe with several good things going for it,usually a queue for the Ice Cream bar with good selections of Good Ice Cream,dining area seating also good with a varied menu,while there my wife had the Fish gojuns with Onion rings and small salad,I opted for the Super Chicken Chip,neither of us were disappointed in the food or the portions,a pot of good tea complimented the fare,Toilet facility is Very Good,price wise was very good,and all this well complimented by the Easy acess free parking facing the GENOA CAFE...We will be sure to return for more of the same....

I visited this place getting take away food the other day. The prices are unbelievable, near £8 for a fish and chip, they were nice though. Seems a nice, clean place. Staff seemed ok. Don't know if I would call back again.

Stored by with a friend recently on a visit to the town with a friend. Wee girl who served us was a pleasure. Food was good the coffee was quality. Tiny little ice cream was a nice touch

We were coming through Warrenpoint on a drizzly Sunday afternoon and we were hungry. We decided to go to the Genoa for fish and chips. It was really like going down memory lane because I can remember being in the Genoa many years ago. The cafe is spotlessly clean and modern and comfortable. The staff were friendly and helpful. Great menu. The fish was tasty, the chips could have done with being hotter. It seemed like they'd been sitting for a little while. Friendly, comfortable cafe to spend a little while and get something tasty. Wee bit disappointed in the chips, but would go back.

Purchased ice cream twice will staying in Warrenpoint and should we ever return our first port of call will be to Genoa's as the ice cream was excellent.

We had: Cheeseburger - average Onion rings - good Curry - not good Chips (fries) - good Ice Cream - great

I would be regular visitor to Warrenpoint and a trip to the Genoa is a must. Fish and Chips followed by their wonderful ice cream is a great treat.

as regular customers of the genoa my wife and I called tonight for our tea,my wife ordered haddock and chips with side salad no dressing when the meal arrived the fish portion was very small and the salad was covered in dressing when I complained to the waitress she just said that's the size we serve complained when I paid the bill and three employees told me that is the size of the haddock they serve we go to other restaurants in the area and their haddock is a full size fillet not a small tail piece will definitely not be back in the genoa

What a treat to find a local restaurant that has it all. We went for the fish and chips which was really nice and plenty of it too. Lots of locals eat here so you it’s good. I’ll have to try the ice cream next time we’re here.

By far the best cafe I have been in. Staff are really friendly. Cleanliness is 5/5. Food has huge portions which taste delicious. Strawberry milkshakes with cream is a must. Got myself a chicken ciabatta which was full of flavour.

I had a lovely afternoon lunch in this lovely restaurant served by a young man name of Brendan he was such an asset to this business he advised me about the food on offer and added little touches like fresh lemon for my hot water he was so pleasant.

For getting a chip shop take away this place it great! The food is good and so is the ice cream! The sitting in experience wasn't great. I'll not go into detail as it's unnecessary. I just think it makes for a better take out establishment.

The lady that owns the establishment shouts orders at all of her staff throughout the café, during several visits now, it is quite annoying as I would like to be able to talk to my friends who are with me without this unnecessary distraction which could easily be avoided by talking to staff in staff only areas and at a lower volume!

called in today and ordered kids meal of cod gougons . oh they were just beautiful and I'm not a fish eater. this wee meal would feed two small children for the price of 1 as there was so much in it. followed by a slider. just lovely

Visited the Genoa tonight really enjoyed It the fish and chips were lovely The service provided by Ruth was excellent she was very friendly and efficient ,We will be back again the special of fish and chips peas with tea bread and butter was really good value wiill be back

We had chicken nuggets and chips. Nice and hot, not bad value and the portion was generous too - shared between two of us it was just right.

Stopped in for Haddock n chips while driving the Mourne Coastal route from Belfast to Dublin this place is brilliant for sit down or takeaway staff are friendly service superb food excellent and the premises so clean and well maintained, will definitely be back again highly recommended.

Really enjoyed our trip out today to Warrenpoint. We went to the Genoa around 2.30pm for a late lunch. The staff are so attentive. Couldn't do enough for us. The food was excellent! We had two kids meals (sausages and chips and chicken nuggets and chips) which were decent portions, a baked potato with chilli and a panini (we didn't want the chips with the panini), 2 large cokes, a slush puppy, a small coke, a latte, 2 desserts - all for approx £35. You couldn't be bad to that. The place was hiving with people queuing to get ice cream as it was such a gorgeous day. The place is very clean and the girl attending to us was fantastic. Very impressed. Highly recommended. Thank you to the staff who were no doubt slaughtered with customers on a busy sunny bank holiday.

Was in on Good Friday. The place was bunged with wall to wall customers. Multiple orders being taken, yet through it all Denise remembered every single one. What a brilliant front of house! I was impressed beyond words. No fear of your order going astray here! 10 out of 10 for Denise!

For the last 3 times i have visited this establishment there has been something wrong in my order each time!!!However, this time my visit to genoa was a joke!!! To begin with i stood and was ignored as the girl behind the counter had the craic with the other employees who were cooking. It wasnt until about 5 mins later when i had to interrupt her that my order was finally taken. As part of my order i had ordered two 4 oz cheesebrugers. When i got my order i checked it there and then to find that i had recieved a 2oz and a 4oz burger, which was wrong! So i told the girl, this was fine they made me a new burger. However, when i got home and opened both burgers there was no cheese on either burgers!!! Despite them charging me for cheeseburgers! At this point i was already home and not driving back down the road. As a result of these continous mistakes with my orders i will not be giving genoa my custom anymore as i am fed up with mistakes everytime!

Celebrated my 50th birthday last week and one of the highlights of my party was a visit by The Genoa ice-cream bike , Sonia and her team were fantastic , my guests were delighted by the delicious ice-cream and the quirkines of the bike with many going back for seconds ! If you are thinking of having a party / wedding / christening etc i would highly recommend you hire the Ice cream bike , your guests will be delighted !

If you are in the south county down area a visit to the Genoa in warrenpoint is a must the fish is so fresh and the batter just melts in your mouth

Always enjoy eating here but it is what it is, a cafe. However, it's a very upmarket cafe and is spotless but it's still a cafe. Food always good.

The days of booths and waitresses in bombazine may be gone but the Genoa spans generations.Superb fried to order traditional fish and chips with all the other dishes that folk want from a take away or sir in.Family business with traditional home made ice cream.Turn back the clock but enjoy the best of modern fast food restaurants.

first of all we walked in after not been for a year and was so shocked to see the make over, it was lovely. but its the food and the staff that make this place. so see you next year.

The chips are crispy and delicious! We had a takeaway and everything was really good. You can see the kitchen where your food is being cooked fresh and they have an icecream counter for their famed icecream or delicious flavoured ones and even a mix if you can't decide!

Call in to this cafe have to say it was simply the best chips and fish we have ever had and to top it ice cream was incredible so We all had two staff so nice as well thanks Genoa

Hate to say this but the last 2 times I've got ice cream here for myself and the kids we've ended up not liking it and last weekend we ended up throwing them in the bin!! Not sure what's going on as used to like their ice creams in the past but won't be going back a third time to be disappointed

The food is nice depending on what you order but the staff are so rude. As a customer I sat there and I got the menu handed to me, but because one of the workers didn't like me because of their own wrong doing they made someone else serve us and take our order which took forever. Then I went up to pay and the young man who was stood there let someone else go then I was stood there for 10 minutes making myself late to an appointment because his friend was on the ice cream, ever since I stepped in once for an ice cream but never again will I sit in for food. Such bad immature service.

A regular here when in the area. Haven't tried anything on their menu beyond their original fast food menu so can only comment on that - best burgers, chips and sausages around, and the coffee was great and plentiful (refreshing to see a decent size cup for once!). Friendly staff.Only thing is the hygiene was not up to scratch - the toliet was in a right state and our table was not clean.

We had tea after spending the day in Warrenpoint. The cafe was busy but we were seated promptly and the table cleared and cleaned. Service was friendly and efficient and the food was tasty, the milkshakes were delicious The only thing that stopped me from giving a five was the fact that the portions were a tad stingy!

I have been here several times in the past and always found the food to be average on a good day, staff are below average in service and attitude at times but the ice cream is a delight and always brings me back.

The genoa café is the best café we've been to and to my surprise the food was not greasy. I would definitely visit this amazing café again.

Stopped here for a quick bite to eat.Had the Genoa's fish supper. Chips were nice but fish was terrible. Seemed nicely cooked but when cut into there was raw batter in the middle. For the amount of fish and chips this place does, it should be perfect every time. However the vanilla ice cream is one of the best in the country, but I do agree with another reviewer about the staff dispensing the ice cream. Need to wear a glove or use napkin around the cone as they are handling money between servings.

Geno are now cooking new potatoe chips, they are to die for definitely worth a visit x the service is great, very friendly staff and the restaurant is spotlessly clean

There was a time when I looked forward to a Genoa but not anymore. The fish n chips are not as good as other fast food outlets and although the ice cream is good there are other parlours so much better. I'll be giving it a miss from now on.

Can't recommend highly enough. We've just spent a week her on holiday and have visited for ice cream every day - I've tried a different flavour each time and have yet to be disappointed! Huge portions, really friendly staff, very reasonable prices and so, so delicious! Not to be missed

We called here on Saturday evening, it was busy but we were lucky to get a seat after 5 mins. Worth waiting on. Very helpful, friendly staff. This place is clean & tidy. Attentive staff who listen to you. Our food, chicken burger for one & cod & chips served with bread & butter & a pot of tea for the other. The tea was lovely & was offered a hot water top up in our pot. A very pleasant experience. Staff here are good in every way, heard a waitress tell people at a table nearby us that there was now a larger table available for them to move to as they were a little squashed at theirs. Very thoughtful. All in all, a great place for food & service. The service was second to none. Will return soon. Thanks.

Beautiful icecream on a sunny day. The strawberry one very nice. Girls handling the food didn't have a glove between and were handling money and food intermittently, not even a napkin around cones.. Gross gross gross.

This is a well known institution in Warrenpoint but relies on its past glory in my opinion. Partner and I had a fish and chips. Fish was ok but the batter was undercooked and very greasy. Chips are average but for a 'chipper' I'd expect better. For 2 fish and chips 2 portions of chicken nuggets and chips..... £23...... Head a few doors down to Diamonds....On the plus point the girl taking the orders was very good.

Finding ourselves in Warrenpoint on a sunny Sunday afternoon. The Redhead and I stopped off here to sample what turned out to be delicious ice cream. Well The Redhead had lemon sorbet, a taste of which brought back taste memories of the 1970's superb.The cafe was busy, but did not seem that way, service was unflustered, cheerful and very slick.Next time I visit Warrenpoint, The Genoa, will be on my itinerary.

Never been in this cafe and have too say it was basically one of the nicest places for a family meal,the staff where attentive,efficient and very pleasant,will certainly be back

Visited here for a lunch on the go today. There was a bit of a waiting time, not good if in a hurry. However, in saying that, the food was quite good and enjoyable. I will stop here again in the near future to compare experiences and try something more from the menu.

Walked in at 8am asked when they closed the girl said 9. So we sat down asked for a menu. We decided quite quickly what we wanted but unfortunately we were ignored as staff were too busy cleaning to bother with the people that pay their wages (customers ) ... Never returning!

Arrived in Easter Sunday looking some lunch as a party of six. A lovely couple moved to another table to allow us to fit in(thanks!). The food was good as was the service but the standouts were the chips and the ice cream milkshakes that were awesome!Would definitely call again.

Visited on a Saturday nite around 8pm. Not so busy so got seated easily. First impressions were it has been refurbished and is nice and clean.I ordered fish goujons with beans and tea. Imagine my amazement to be told they had no beans left and didn't want to open a new tin until next day. I asked for ordinary peas but they only do mushy peas. Not a very good start.My friend ordered wedges which came with a bit of side salad and we're fine and non greasy.I got my moderate portion size of goujons and a battered sausage. Non greasy. Side salad with fish is my pet hate. They absolutely do not complement each other. My friend got my salad.Tea was tea. The meal was ok and came quickly. The building was warm and I can only imagine a packed cafe on a warm summers day.Phew.Still I will go back. And the staff were fine as was the decor and food. They did overcharge me but I got my refund as I noticed it quickly and was in a forgiving mood. I do recommend it even through my bad experience.

No visit to seaside summery Warrenpoint is complete without a visit to the best chip shop in the town. authentic Italian family from the port of Genoa, the food is good. I recommend eating by the shore or taking it to Warrenpoint park, oh and it is mandatory to come back for ice-cream, their range is truly delicious.

Love getting take away fish goujons and chips from this one hundred year old establishment. The ice cream is amazing - home made with many flavours but my favourite is the vanilla nougat wafer. they now have an outlet on the Newry bypass so we don't have to go to Warrenpoint for the Genoa experience.

After climbing to the Cloughmore Stone in Rostrevor Co.Down we all felt hungry and decided to to back to Warrenpoint for fish and chips in the Genoa.Our server Aiveen(hope the spelling is correct)promptly came with our menus and took a drinks order.While we placed our order Aiveen chatted with us asking what we had been doing for the afternoon.Our food came beautifully presented and we got stuck in.We were not disappointed.Aivenn was very attentive especially with the kids and our time there was as equally enjoyable as our outdoor activities.I would recommend The Genoa anytime.Friendly efficient staff beautiful food and spotless facilities.

Fish and chips where quality and the frshest iv had in a long time!little or no manners from the staff bar 2 of the girls!will only go back because of the quality of food and the ice cream was very nice also!

I go here every so often but its not special and quite small portions, the last time I got ice cream large cone 1 small scope. the icream and milkshakes is good but not a lot for the price

Have been to Genoa a few times and it never fails to impress! For both food and ice cream it is the best place in town! Would totally recommend it!

Stopped in this delightful cafe today on a trip trough south down with an old friend, greeted with warm and friendly staff in very comfortable and spotlessly clean seating a true gem good food quality ice cream and the best of craic from an old timer called Gerry look forward to stopping again soon

The food was cooked on order, we had the regular portions which were very generous and the fish was full of flavour and not dripping in grease. The tables were well spaced out and the premises were spotlessly clean. We would certainly call again when in the area.

Called in here on a very wild & rainy as didn't fancy a look around for somewhere to eat.It was a very lucky choice, Very bright,clean decor not what you would expect. Ordered a steak & chips as it was good value, glad to say it was also good food and my steak was cooked properly. Despite the weather we got Ice-cream cones afterwards and they were great. Would have gotten another one but was stuffed after the steak.
