visited BakeOffe last week, hoping for a fresh start after having avoided it due to past experiences with declining food quality. Sadly, it was even worse than before. When I walked in, I overheard a young staff member mentioning she was struggling, only for the owner to dismiss her in a shockingly cold way, saying, “Put your issues in a box and leave it outside the door!” I was appalled by the lack of empathy and respect towards an employee who was clearly doing her best. To top it off, the owner refused to let the young staff member serve me, stepping in herself with an unfriendly attitude. I ordered a coffee and a muffin, but by the time I reached my car, my disappointment only grew. The muffin was wrapped in layers of clingfilm, and when I finally got to taste it, it had a terrible plastic-like flavor. This isn’t a one-time issue either—I’ve heard from friends that the muffins always have this plastic taste, likely from being wrapped in clingfilm too soon after baking. BakeOffe used to be fantastic, but it’s astonishingly disappointing now. The lack of care in both food quality and treatment of staff is really upsetting. This was once a place I enjoyed, but with the current management, I won’t be returning.

Super home bakes, both sweet and savoury. Excellent coffee and all very reasonably priced. Great place for lunch or a snack.

So welcoming, and accommodating. Visited with my partner, child and very nervous dog. Every staff member made a fuss of our dog, and made him very at ease. The food was very nice too, we had a cooked breakfast and all of it was of good quality. Will visit again.

We were 13 miles into our cycle ride from Mersea when we discovered this little gem when we stopped at the traffic lights. Struggling to find somewhere to put our two bikes and dog trailer, a great guy came to our aid and moved the tables around to accommodate us. Once settled, we enjoyed a flat white with a delicious slice of Victoria Sandwich and a toasted buttered tea cake - just what we needed and helped us to take on the remaining 20 miles of our journey!

Fantastic to have this on our doorstep. A great local cafe. Takeaway only due to C19, but brilliant smoothies and delicious sausage rolls. Great prices- makes a change from the over inflated costs of Colchester town centre! Such value for quality. Will be back regularly!

I was surprised to find such good coffee in such an unlikely spot. It's by a roundabout and if coming by car you have to park down the road a piece. But the coffee is excellent, the food is a varied selection of breakfast and lunchtime dishes, plus sandwiches on home-made bread. I haven't eaten there much, but can certainly recommend the bacon sandwiches. The atmosphere is comfortable, the service good and the wifi fast and free.

Lovely cafe. All the food is cooked in it's own fat no extra used. Nice bacon and sausages "essential" great bread too. If you want a quality breakfast you can't go far wrong at Bakeoffee for a great standard breakfast

My first Christmas lunch and I thought I treat myself a lovely hot coffee with Tia Maria. I had to wait for the coffee cocktail and that was ok but when it arrived it looked messy, then I tried it was not very warm but I didn’t had heart to complain so I drank it until the last sip then I could feel something in my mouth and realised I had a fly in my mouth so it was nearly dissolved and I thought I was going to trow up. I told the staff what happened and I had the fly on my finger, the staff didn’t think anything as it was supposed to be normal, they didn’t handled it very well. They didn’t apologise say anything so I had to say I hope my glass off wine will be free of charge as already paid £7.25 for my cocktail. Anyway we carried on with the celebrations and then my Christmas lunch arrived. Looked very nice, food was hot and I enjoyed it until I thought my Christmas sausage looked a bit pale so I joked with my husband you can have it as it looks undercooked. My husband ate half and realised that sausage still raw. Told staff again and no one raised an eyebrow…. Well i think its not the way how to run a restaurant, i know everything is not perfect but at least recognise the problem. Just a sorry and an apology would have been nice.

Delicious food, lots of options and reasonably priced. Had the hash stack which was yummy and apparently the scrambled egg was the best my aunt had ever had! Thank you. Great for milk allergies too as most items are vegan.

Stayed on Mersea Island for a few days with friends for birthday celebration and was looking for somewhere to go for afternoon tea. Found The Gilt Rooms on Tripadvisor and decided to give it a go. We had to book for the afternoon tea but wow so worth it. Everything from the freshly made sandwiches to the warm fresh out of the oven scones and home bakes cakes (chocolate eclair, victoria sandwich, lemon drizzle and choc brownie were amazing. All washed down with a perfectly chilled glass of prosecco and lashings of tea or coffee. It was the absolute best afternoon tea I've ever had and have had a few. Will definitely visit again when there.
