Interesting and innovative menu. First rate food - the emphasis here is on really fresh ingredients. Three of us had an excellent light lunch and very much enjoyed it. Good service. Sensible prices. Lovely restaurant situated within the hall. Highly recommended.

This was a complete surprise to me, I have lived in Bolton most of my life and did not know this place was so close to home. If only I had,I could have saved myself a small fortune in petrol. Basically all the brilliant reviews are absolutely true, you will not find better anywhere, lovely food in beautiful surroundings and friendly atmosphere and staff. No need to look any further than here for a fabulous place to eat.

Friends of ours decided to introduce us to an exquisite tearoom situated in Smithills Hall, located in Bolton, Greater Manchester. Bake & Roast is an establishment based within one of the oldest and best-preserved manor houses in the North West of England, hosting a Medieval Hall, a chapel, Tudor and Victorian buildings originating from the 1300’s. In not knowing what to expect, our breaths were taken away as on entry to Bake & Roast, you immediately walk through history as you enter into this manor house. At first, you think you’re having lunch in a historically set tearoom, but quickly realize this isn’t the case as Bake & Roast have brought a modern look that welcomes you with comfort and LOTS of light. One wall of this tearoom has such a large window that it almost gives you the impression of having lunch on the patio, overlooking a spectacular garden. The hosts were incredibly friendly, and their smiles quickly made you feel welcome. Before selecting which table, you’d like to dine at, you notice the freshly baked pies and colorful cakes. An assortment of homemade goodness that soon makes you realize you need to factor in dessert too! The menu is well-priced and though not overbearing, you can easily find a meal that will tickle most appetites. For those adventurous foodies, Bake & Roast offer a twist to some of the traditional pies and due to being a lover of most unique recipes, we had to order some of each as a takeaway for later (these new tastes did not disappoint at all). The meal I had decided on was the traditional sandwich and soup combo, and wow! When this meal arrived, it was much larger than what I expected, the ingredients were incredibly fresh, and the love put into each item on the plate was very obvious. Normally not one to finish a large plate of food, the bread and salad were so light that I was able to enjoy every bite. I can highly recommend the soup, as it was rich and thick, and presented in the perfect size soup cup. The hosts were very proud of their tearoom and took great pleasure in showing us the history behind this venue. Having heard some of the stories of the estate and in having them gladly show us around parts of the establishment, this created a little space, which meant a cup of tea and freshly made scones could be enjoyed. Very truly a place that knows how to make the heart and stomach happy. We highly recommend this venue for your coffee dates, light lunches, afternoon teas & cake.

Went for the afternoon tea, but wasn’t given a tea pot! Asked for tea, and a mug came with a tea bag. I’ve never known afternoon tea without a tea pot. Food tastes good.

Visited this lovely establishment which had been highly recommended, and wow it didn’t disappoint. The staff were lovely and the service was excellent. The food we chose was from a comprehensive menu. I chose the Black Pudding Sausage Roll Lunch and my wife had a Single Platter Lunch consisting of a cup of soup, half a sausage roll, half a sandwich which was large as well, this was finished off with wedges and salad. The quality of the food was exceptional and portion size probably enough for two. Great value for money. Many thanks to the waitress who looked after us, and without asking brought my wife a glass of water as she had a coughing fit. Finished our visit off with a free tour round Smithills Hall which was excellent as well. If you plan a visit you definitely won’t be disappointed. Thanks to all.

Bake and Roast at Smithills is a fantastic venue with food, service and staff all first class. We had snacks there and enjoyed them so much we took one home also. Can thoroughly recommend the pastry roll with spinach, potato and Lancashire cheese as well as the mushroom and brie sandwich. The coffee as well is excellent. It is advisable to book in advance.

We visited Smithalls Hall today for a walk! We've not been over winter and we're pleasantly surprised to find that 'Bake and Roast' tearooms had opened in the hall. What a lovely setting to enjoy a snack, lunch or afternoon tea. We went in for a drink and piece of cake only to end up having a light lunch. My husband had homemade country veg soup with a pretzel roll and butter. He is quite the critic but declared it delicious. I had an open sandwich of smoked salmon on cream cheese all on a toasted sourdough bread. This was topped with a beetroot Chutney all served with the chunkiest homemade chips and a salad with a difference. Not only did it taste good but was beautifully presented. My husband had a large pot of tea and I had one of the best tasting smoothist lattes I've had in a long time. We've had many a 'snack' in a historic house but this is up the top. Friendly staff and virtually everything homemade. I had no room for cake! But being an Aussie was intrigued with the Australian crunch slice so took one home. Trust me it tastes like a Laminginton, looks nothing like one but is crunchy and full of chocolate. We will be back. Thank you. Oh yes we walked it off afterwards!

2nd visit to Bake & Roast at Smithills and the quality and service again couldn't have been better. We hadn't booked which is quite risky due to to its well earned popularity. However, on arrival we were very well looked after and were able to be accomadated. Food was fantastic and the coffee was amazing. The quality and preparation of food and drink is of a very high standard and the service is warm and genuine. The tea room is set in incredible surroundings and the friendliness of the staff makes the whole experience one to remember. Can't wait for the next visit!!

You could tell everything was homemade, even the sandwich fillings were top quality. The service was good too, I will definitely be going back and would highly recommend!!

Had expected to be blown away by this place but it was mediocre. Table hadn’t been wiped properly when we arrived and I had to source our own cutlery, as there was only enough for one person in the table bucket (we were a party of three). A man who appeared to be the manager seated us and supplied us with menus, but failed to explain that lunch service had ended meaning that when we came to order, our requests were declined. Why not give people a menu from which they CAN order instead or one from which they can’t? Makes no sense. Ordered a scone; menu indicated that the butter and cream would be from local Smithills Farm. However when the scone arrived, the butter was a bulk-bought foil covered portion - definitely not from Smithills Farm. Very dishonest advertising. Felt like the cafe were trying to hoodwink me! No knife, butter knife or teaspoon provided to cut the scone or indeed to spread the jam, cream or butter. It’s not rocket science. The manager did nothing when he saw me taking cutlery from other tables, instead opting to stare into an iPad. The scone was dry and stale-tasting. It crumbled into a heap, rendering it incredibly difficult to tackle. One young lady waiting tables, a young man making coffees behind the counter and a man/manager who did nothing apart from seat us and take our money afterwards. The waitress was pleasant and helpful, albeit rushed off her feet and did try to negotiate with the kitchen so that we could order lunch items (since we were given a lunch menu) but she had to deliver the news that this wasn’t possible. I’d have expected the manager to have dealt with this but he didn’t show any interest. Coffee was decent and well made. Save your money and go elsewhere. This was a dishonest menu, disappointing food and quite frankly, daylight robbery.

Came with my partner for lunch today, only to be turned away at the door saying they were fully booked - despite there being SIX empty tables. Instead, we had to make do with a snack from a tent outside, where we sat in the cold to eat and could see these same tables layimg empty through the window looking in. We did a loop of the grounds and came back 40mins later. Same handful of tables still empty. Snubbed away perhaps? What a shame. VERY poor service.

I visited Smithills Hall with my daughter and her 2 children for lunch - we had only heard good things about the food so thought we would give it a try - Well we weren’t disappointed- the food was delicious - we had the soup, half a sandwich and sausage roll with side salad - it was delicious and so filling - We didn’t have any room for cake but took some away for the rest of the family - who all agreed that the food was lovely What makes this place extra special though is the staff - they were an absolute credit to the place - I don’t think I have ever been anywhere where the staff were as friendly and the service was fabulous I definitely recommend visiting - it was a lovely afternoon x

Having seen the reviews we booked for 5 and was satisfied with the food . The service however was very poor. Nobody asked if we wanted drinks , we had to find someone every time. Finished plates and glasses were only taken away after we pointed it out , despite waitresses walking past several times. The wrong meal was presented to my partner who then had to wait another 15 minutes for her replacement. A drinks order was incorrect when brought to us. In summary it's the worst service we've ever experienced in an eaterie. The food was fine .
