Aya Sophia Greek & Mediterranean Cuisine in Calderdale

We are there on Monday night. I ordered a kleftiko and my partner ordered a lamb kebab. Neither dish was cooked to order. They arrived less than 10 minutes after ordering and both had clearly been pre-cooked and heated in a microwave as the temperature was uneven in them. The lamb kebab was really tough from being cooked twice. We should have sent them both back but persevered but extremely unhappy with this. Would strongly recommend avoiding.

Great restaurant our 1st visit and won't be the last. Really attentive staff and they took care of all my dietary requirements even phoned in the afternoon to run through what was suitable for me on the menu. Food was amazing and just the bit of Greece we needed, which we have missed since our holidays in the summer ☀️ 🇬🇷

I cannot rate this restaurant highly enough. The food is simply out of this world. I opted for the mixed kebab and my partner the chicken kebab. The portions are large and filling. The kebabs are probably the best I’ve had. The staff and owner are wonderful, very friendly, helpful and welcoming. Highly recommend.

Went for an early evening meal and the place was already quite busy, but the service was still quick and the staff were friendly, and the food was very good. We strted with Olives and hummus and both had mousaka one vegetarian and one meat both of which were very tasty

If I could this place 0 stars I would. Restaurant was well aware my friend had a nut allergy. We ordered food they assured us did not have nuts in and she had an allergic reaction, had to use an epipen and go to ED via ambulance for a few hours. It was undeniably the food as the reaction started 2-3 mouthfuls after. I would never recommend the restaurant especially not to allergen sufferers / people with intolerances

Very quiet lunch time so minimal atmosphere. Food good, great lunch deal

Nice place but the meat and fish is already marinated and as someone who can't eat chilli it made it difficult. The waitress was very good, doing her best to try and was loading with the chef but they didn't have anything unmarinated so I wasn't able to have any meat. Was able to have some prawns in the end which were nice. They could do with keeping some meat and fish aside that isn't marinated in case others are allergic to chilli and peppers. Apart from this, it was a lovely place (music a bit loud inside upstairs so we had to shout almost to hear each other) and my other half enjoyed their food (no allergies).

Absolutely lovely again as always, this is a must if you are in Hebden. Thank you to whoever cooked my lamb yesterday, it was perfect and the service was excellent. The standards only get better every time we visit.

Always great and excellent value. Lovely staff good relaxed atmosphere. Ignore the pretentious "ooh it's not authentic" reviews. My favourite place to eat in HB by a country mile. Thanks Oz.

Unfortunately we didn’t have a nice meal at all , it didnt taste like authentic Greek food at all , hummus was runny , garlic mushrooms was horrible , the moussaka just wasn’t Greek at all and tasted like an average shepherds pie , no flavour food all bland and tasteless so won’t be returning and it’s not cheap either, we expected better for the over £200 bill we received so won’t be returning

I’ve eaten here before and thoroughly enjoyed the food , atmosphere and staff . Staff and atmosphere were good this evening but sadly the food was distinctly average , not much flavour or taste . Sad to say but probably won’t visit again

I didn't try the food so can't comment on it. The drinks, however, are very reasonable and that was the purpose of my visit. The decor is modern and sleek with plenty of indoor and outdoor seating options. The staff are lovely and friendly. The music is relaxed rock/indie music. The prices for drinks are very reasonable as you would be hard pushed to find a - good - cocktail for 7.50 in most establishments. I had my drinks on the rooftop terrace, decked out with comfortable seating, mosaic ceiling lamps and a glass firepit -It would definetley be a nice date spot or to catch up with friends. Check it out !

A surprise visit by our niece, so we went to Hebden Bridge After a quick walk round the shops time for food. Aya Sophia is an excellent choice, very friendly staff, they let dogs in as well, always a bonus. The offer of 2 courses for £18.95 cannot be beaten, lots of choices for starters and mains We had Greek salad , Tzatziki and cheese garlic bread for starters, main courses Adnam kebab, Vegetarian Moussaka and chicken with spaghetti. The food came quickly and generous portions, we couldn't finish everything but we did try, Efes beer and rosé wine to quench our thirst, recommend booking, but also have other offers on their website, walk ins welcome

Had such a brilliant night, staff go above and beyond... the food was brilliant, the atmosphere is excellent... cannot find a fault... can't wait to come back for a good laugh, food...

I had a takeaway so I can't comment on the atmosphere, but as the other two categories deserve five stars I think it's fair. Excellent service, friendly and thoughtful staff and the food was excellent. I had a lamb kebab and the pieces of lamb were beautifully cooked and there was lots of it.

Birthday meal with a couple of friends. I haven't eaten here in years and to say it has changed would be a massive understatement. The building has been totally renovated and is barely recognisable. The menu has a great choice of options including veggie, vegan and gluten free. Great selection of drinks at a reasonable price. I have read some reviews on here stating that the drinks were over priced. Well, I didn't find them to be any higher than other places in town. Three of us chose five different dishes including two where we asked for a variation on the menu. The waitress didn't bat an eyelid at the changes. The food did take a while to arrive but, they were busy and we were in no hurry. When the food arrived we were all very pleased with what we had ordered. We chose not to sit in the main eating area because to be honest it was a bit too noisy for us. So, we asked for a different table and that was dealt with in a really friendly way. This didn't affect us at all but, this restaurant is on the first floor in an old building so not suitable for anyone who cannot cope with stairs. To be honest, that is true of a lot of places in this town due to its age. So to sum up a lovely evening and I will be going back again soon.

We did cocktail making at Aya Sophia for a hen do back in May. They were amazing - so helpful, happy for us all to make different cocktails, great value for money and really good with different dietary requirements. We had much more food than expected and everyone really enjoyed it. A special thanks to Ozzy who made sure we had an amazing time!

Great food served by Josh, could not fault the quality. Had several dishes & never thought it would come to end. Plenty for all it has to be said & excellent value for money. BTW Josh, great sense of humour, nice to know there's young people out there keeping these places going.

Went for Lunch time beautiful food an drink an family meal very sunny day very busy but nothing too much trouble pleasant bar staff an restaurant staff had hot an cold starters an beers an a cocktail for me an daughter resturant just on edge of the street into the town near ole sweet shop big portions looked at sweets cakes etc but was too full dips an pitta nice too.

We always eat here when we visit Hebden Bridge. The food is amazing. We had a beautiful starter and mousaka which was first class. However, we asked for lime and soda to drink. We actually got water (which is free) with lime cordial!!! Not soda. We were charged a whopping £5 for the two drinks. Absolutely diabolical. We also paid a service charge which we didn’t realise. I’ve still given a 4 because of the food but it will be tap water next time if we go back!!

Called in due to another restaurant card machine not working. Wow so glad we did. Food amazing.Staff extremely friendly. Food was delicious severed hot and not a long wait . We called on a Thursday at around 7 pm the place was busy but couldn’t fault anything from walking in to leaving. We will be calling again soon.

Quite simply outstanding. We have booked for my big birthday family celebration in July and called in last minute - yesterday evening to see if they had a table for us there and then as well. We ate the Greek Banquet between us and it was superb. Not been here for ages and it is really lovely. Beautifully clean and well decorated, Fabulous food and an exceptionally lively vibe to the place. Thoroughly enjoyed ourselves and absolutely recommend that you go. They also have a great cocktail bar which we didn't use but it looked very comprehensive and exciting!

Called in for lunch, restaurant was freezing cold. Food average, a shadow of its former self. Prices have gone up significantly, no longer the great value for money it once was. Service charge added to the bill was the final insult, why should I be expected to pay staffs wages while I dine in the cold? Doubt I'll be back.

Really enjoyable experience. It was a quiet night but there was a friendly atmosphere. The meat moussaka was one of the best I've ever tasted.

Lovely restaurant, came as a family of 6 and the food and service was fantastic. Atmosphere was busy and bustling but not super loud. Would recommend a visit to this lovely place.

Very disappointed to see a member of staff smoking at the top of the stairs on entering the restaurant. Very quiet for a Bank Holiday Weekend, food was ok, but felt slightly rushed.

Just went today — food was great and well-priced, but the music was definitely too loud! We could barely talk to each other at our table without shouting. Likely won't go back, even if the food was, again, really good

Fantastic food, fantastic cocktails.

A group of 11 of us ate here last Saturday evening. The food was delicious, we all had different melas and everyone enjoyed them! It was delicious! However what stood out the most was the amazing staff. They were attentive but not pushy, chatty, polite, patient (there were 11 of us!!) and really added to the whole experience. I rarely put reviews in but this restaurant really stood out!

Went with friends and we chose the 2 course special menu. Found the food bland and not very authentic. Service good but the overall experience was very disappointing. Doesn’t help that you have to walk through customers smoking whilst entering and exiting the restaurant.

Fabulous Greek restaurant with lovely friendly staff. We were there on a Monday evening and we expected it to be really quiet, but there were quite a few in and it was only 6pm! This restaurant couldn’t be mistaken for anything other than Greek and had gently Greek music playing in the background. I started with Ezme, one of my very favourite things, and it was cool, fresh and spicy and served with warm pitta bread, my husband had calamari and he said it was some of the best that he had ever had, and he’s had quite a lot! I followed with the lamb moussaka, it was delicious and my husband had the mixed kebab, another best for him. I “managed” baklava to end the meal, served for me with fresh cream, and all this was accompanied by a lovely bottle of Sauvignon Blanc. We had a great time, and hope to go back soon. I believe there is a cocktail bar there also, and there are various seating areas to eat. It looks very busy on Saturday nights so I’d recommend booking just in case. Do go if you love Greek food, you’ll thank yourself.

Popped in on a rainy Thursday night after looking for some where to eat. The place was busy but we managed to get a table for 2. We had the 2 course for £17.95 meal deal. Food was lovely - baked feta, houmous and chicken kebab each with a side of chips. Service was great, staff are friendly and welcoming and we weren’t rushed to leave as soon as we had finished. Would recommend.

Booked a good three weeks in advance as my Birthday was also Mother's day , arrived to a flight of stairs to get to the restaurant, we were sat in corner seat next to a stone wall it was so cold , the food didn't represent anything we had eaten in Greece or Turkey, the service was very rushed between courses, very disappointed we won't be returning 😑

I can’t praise this place enough! Having had a somewhat sub-optimal experience in another restaurant in town the contrast in our visit to Aya Sophia was dramatic. The staff were fantastic. The person looking after us was friendly, attentive and really made us feel welcome. I also noticed other members of staff keeping an eye out for any customers who might need anything so it looks like everyone who works there takes pride in what they do. The food was absolutely delicious, I had the Sucuklu Yumurtah Pide (a bit like a pizza) and my wife had Lamb cutlets. We were stuffed and couldn’t finish but they happily boxed up our leftovers so we could take them home and enjoy them the next day. (I can confirm that the remaining Pide was very tasty as a snack straight from the fridge.) The atmosphere inside the restaurant was vibrant and relaxed. I’d look forward to a return visit should we visit Hebdon Bridge again in the future.

This is a great place for lunch. We popped in on a Sunday, without a reservation and were lucky to be able to get a table as it was busy. The atmosphere was pleasant and service friendly and efficient. We decided to eat off the deal menu- which was 2 courses for less than £20. All the food was delicious. We will be back next time we are in Hebden Bride.

Really good food but not really authentic. The moussaka didn't have enough cinnamon taste and the kleftico was really a lamb shank with rice and salad. I would prefer Greek potatoes.

Short notice walk in of 7 guests and 2 dogs, very warmly greeted and offered a delightful outdoor heated booth! The food was to an impeccable standard and ALL staff were welcoming friendly and happy to help. A true gem in the heart of Hebden Bridge!

We booked in to the Aya Sophia as a party of six for a birthday celebration. From the moment we walked in we were catered for and looked after very well indeed. Staff were excellent, efficient, poilte and knowledgable. Service was fast but we never felt pressured. There is a great menu to choose from – we all mainly went for mezé starters to share and traditional Greek main courses. We were not disappointed. The food was fantastic and overall there was a nice atmosphere in the restaurant. Afterwards, we managed to blag a side room with a 'firepit' in so we could chill out and continue our evening with cocktails. A great finishing touch to a great night and we'll be back at Aya Sophia for sure. Highly recommended.

Mixed kebab put me in a sort of trance. Unbelievable. All the meat was beautifully charred and yet still so juicy. Star of the show has to be the calamari. Probably the best I've ever had.

Lovely restaurant - I went here with my family who came up from London and wanted something nice and authentic. Ordered loads of different meats and thought the food was made very well. The design of this place is beautiful too and they were super accommodating to our dog. Having finished the weekend, my parents said that this was their favourite place they'd eaten at before going back down. We ordered the pide and the mixed grill as well as some vine leaves fries, cheese rolls (bourek) and the Greek salad. If you are in the cocktail bar (the only dog friendly section) and it's cold then make sure you're closer to the front door because that's where the heaters are. The staff did bring blankets but it didn't do the job (they did try!). For the four of us it was about 112 pounds

We really looked forward to eating at Aya Sofia after seeing the reviews. We were given a table by a log fire which was good and ordered Tzatziki with pita to start with the house white wine. The tzatziki was very disappointing compared with others we have experienced and had very little taste. Our main courses were Kleftiko and chicken kebab. Rice as an accompaniment was not offered as standard but rather bulga was provided. The dishes were not as hot as we like. The service was pleasant but slow (odd as there were very few customers). Overall this was a disappointing meal and we would not return.

Popped for lunch with my wife and daughter, we're all fans of Greek / Mediterranean food and we weren't disappointed. We tried out the lunchtime specials and they were delicious, we will definitely be back to try the full menu.

First time visitors but won’t be the last. Live local but never been to this restaurant before and after our meal wondering why. Excellent service, great menu, good atmosphere, reasonable prices (service charge added), main thing food was fantastic. Well worth a visit.

Was a bit disappointed after reading the reviews so wanted to share my experience. The service was excellent and the restaurant was clean and tidy. The food was well presented. However I ordered the vegetable moussaka which was a very thin layer of roasted veg with no sauce cover by a layer of melted mozzarella cheese. The bulgar wheat rice was a bit bland so the whole dish lacked depth of flavour. My partner had the Chicken Bodrum which was very nice but with the bland bulgar wheat rice became a bit samey.

Unreal food… just DELICIOUS. Service also excellent. Couldn’t recommend enough.

As I use a walking stick to aid my mobility it’s not the easiest place to access yet if you can push yourself to climb the stairs to the restaurant you will not regret it. I had a mixed grill and it was superb. Served with cuscus and two dips. Beautifully cooked and presented. Served by ( a very lovely woman in a leather skirt) I’m sorry I didn’t catch her name. She was very pleasant and very attentive to our table and knowledgeable as to what was on the menu. All in all well worth the visit. We will go back and try something different next time as the menu looks superb.

Absolutely love this place. The food was incredible. I had the Sucuk for a starter. This tasted amazing. The sauce that it comes out in was delicious. It was great for dipping bits of pitta in. Love Tzatziki so we had to try that too and it didn't fail to disappoint. Again this was great for dipping and nice and light before our main. Being a greek resteraunt I wanted to keep things traditional so i opted for Moussaka. This was amazing - absolutely delicious. Only thing that slightly let it down on the night is that staff forgot part of our order. We had to remind them to bring it out. But unfortunately by the time we had finished our meals it still wasnt ready so we had to cancel it which was disappointing. Let me say though the food here is absolutely delicious. The menu is great and has a wide variety of choice. The prices are very reasonable as the food is exceptional. This is easily one of the top resteraunts in this area and the surrounding areas and one of my favourite places to visit. I can't wait to come back again to try out more of the menu. And i would highly recommend visiting if you haven't done already.
