I like to be pampered by my surroundings when I go out for a special meal, which I always hope a two Michelin star restaurant is going to provide. In this occasion you walk into a noisy room and are immediately taken downstairs for the start of your ‘journey’ to, as has been described previously, a shabby bar, where you are offered a range of champagnes. There was no ‘would you like a drink in the bar first, or shall we take you straight to your table?’ and no choice of aperitif offered. This felt like unnecessary pressure (given the cost is already £220 per head) to spend more money. I also suspect that our table wasn’t ready as we then waited some time in the bar perched on uncomfortable bar stools. When we were taken to our table, our ‘journey’ was explained to us and the meal began to arrive. Everything was described in detail - what order to eat things in, which cutlery to use, and we were corrected if we were seen to be doing it ‘wrong’. The presentation of the food was exquisite and the work which went into its preparation and the staff required to maintain this standard is evident. The ingredients are undoubtedly of high quality. Each of the six ‘courses’ comprise an number individual mouthfuls, all beautifully explained, the region, the composition, spices, etc. At the end of the day, did I enjoy the food ? It was certainly interesting and I enjoyed some components more than others and, as I have already said, the work which goes into such beautiful food and presentation is clear. However, for me, I would rather have a few more substantial dishes, where I can really taste and appreciate the flavours, than 30 mouthfuls, each a lovely bite in itself but quickly forgotten as the next morsel is presented. Was it worth the money ? For the food - probably; the ambiance - no. It was an interesting experience but I wouldn’t return.

We were very kindly gifted a voucher of £500 for this restaurant for our wedding last year. We have been trying to get a booking over the last year but every time we looked it up the restaurant was fully booked up. We were finally able to make a booking on 16th July for 28th September. According to our voucher it expired on 24th August. I spoke to the manager on the phone tonight and he was not understanding or accommodating. He told us we could email the owner Andrew Wong which we have done a number of times with no response at all.. We told him we would not want our friend's extremely generous voucher to go to waste and, had we been able to get a booking at any earlier point in the last year, we would have but it was impossible. They have completely ignored all emails/attempts at contact

It was a very pleasant visit to A.Wong. The tasting menu offers a great variety of food with different ingredients and ways to present the food. As someone from Hong Kong, I may not appreciate the most traditional food (like dimsum) from them but I really like how they present the ingredients in a Western or innovative way. The service is attentive and they provided good explanations on our food. It is the first dining experience that I have difficulties to name which is my favourite dishes - since there are quite many of them! Thanks A.Wong team for this experience :) It is really worth for special occasions celebration - I wish I would have chance to revisit!

Lidt blandet rammer for oplevelsen, som let ville kunne forbedres.

A visit to A.Wong has been a long time coming but now after our amazing lunch on Saturday we just can’t wait to return and enjoy the full dinner experience. The restaurant is situated on Wilton Road and only a short walk from Victoria Station. When we arrived the place was already full and had a lively and friendly atmosphere. We received a fabulous welcome before being taken downstairs to the Forbidden City Bar for an aperitif. Here we enjoyed the A.Wong Negroni and the special Gin and Tonic. You also got to see the chef’s making the Dim Sum. Now it was time to head upstairs to our seats at the counter in front of the bar ready to begin the afternoon’s festivities. We opted for the Touch of the Heart Tasting menu that included a wine pairing. This would be fifteen courses and five glasses of wine priced at £195. Personally I thought it was definitely worth it. The staff couldn’t have been more friendly and professional throughout our lunch as they explained every single dish and recommendations on how it would be best enjoyed. The sommelier was also excellent and the wine pairings were amazing. The menu includes some absolutely stunning Dim Sum to begin before moving on to dishes including Memories of Peking Duck , the Cantonese Chicken , Wonton with Garlic , Shanxi ‘lamb burger’ , dessert and petit fours. Every single dish was beautifully presented and the flavour combinations were simply incredible. These are matched perfectly with the wine chosen by head sommelier Mickael who it was a pleasure to meet. This really was a team at the top of their game and now I just cannot wait to come back for the full evening experience. If you haven’t been to A.Wong yet then I would highly recommend you do so. This is Chinese food like you’ve never tasted before and the service is excellent so my recommendation is to Book Now. Many Thanks to Andrew and his team for a fantastic dining experience and look forward to seeing you again soon.

I was looking forward to 4 people eating here but overall I was left disappointed. It wasn’t the experience a 2 star restaurant should be. We were shuffled into a dark basement on arrival thinking this was our dining area. Whilst we ordered cocktails the service was disinterested as we didn’t want vintage champagne. The food/ drinks menu on the website is less in terms of variety is incorrect . A guest ordered a £18 glass of red wine. It was clearly “ off “ to everyone on the table. Took 30 minutes to replace it despite asking multiple times The lunch time tasting menu was good but a bit “ gimmicky” but overly dessert orientated so after spending £1200 for 4 for lunch we were left hungry but feeling sick and felt our £ would be spent better elsewhere. I wouldn’t return

Michael is exceptional sommelier / such a fun character. Dim Sum some of best in world alongside Man Wah and Tim Ho Wan in Hong Kong. A peculiar location opposite a Sainsbury’s in Pimlico, but once inside such a great experience. Only two star restaurant in London where a bottle of wine and sumptuous food don’t require second mortgage. Thank you Andrew & Nat.

This was our second visit to A Wong. They were extremely helpful as they had to cancel our booking, but arranged to swap nights with another restaurant we were going to later in the week so that we were still able to go. We had pre-dinner drinks in the small bar downstairs and were then seated in the restaurant. The staff were very efficient and knowledgeable and introduced each dish explaining what region of China it was from and in what order to eat them. We mentioned the charismatic waiter who had served us last year and "Uncle Ben" came through to see us and also bade us goodbye when we left. The food was very good, although I preferred the Menu of Five Movements which we had last year. Just my personal preference, but my taste buds became a little overwhelmed as so many of the dishes had strong individual flavours. However we will definitely go again.

Instead of the more relaxed dim sum lunch, which is the best in London, we reserved the classic tasting menu for the evening, and it was almost a three hour experience. Just when you thought they had given you the best tasting bitelet you’d had in your entire life, they would serve you something even tastier. It was truly decadent the way it went on and on for hours as the surprises kept coming. The kitchen team is genius. We sat at the bar, with a view of the open kitchen and watched them work. We chatted with several waiters and with the charming and beautiful Mrs A Wong, who was serving part of the time. It is their family business and she is a formidable person and a perfectioness in her own right. We always have something to talk about, so the hours passed nicely as we were barraged by 28 different dishes, each one different, all well presented, with some bordering on the highly elaborate but all of them shamelessly good. It’s hard to single anything out, everything was excellent. The bill is as eyewatering as the food is mouthwatering, but by then you don’t care because it’s actually good value for the effort they’ve put into it. I am not sure why anyone would ever give them a bad review or less than three Michelin stars. Everything throughout the entire experience was exceptional and praiseworthy. We’ve been coming for about ten years, and have watched them evolve into being one of the top handful of best in the world. It’s a good idea to skip lunch if you are headed to A Wong for dinner.

A Wong is a good Chinese restaurant and certainly one of the best in the UK, there’s no doubt about that, the food is presented nicely and the menu is imaginative enough, but I wasn’t blown away by the flavours by any means. I do personally think two stars from Michelin is quite generous. I had the evening tasting menu and it must be said that the dim sum is probably the best in the UK and the noodle dish was very good also, but everything else for me didn’t stand out at all, it was dish after dish of forgettable things. Having eaten in every single Michelin starred Chinese restaurant in the UK as well as the perfect one but should be two Michelin starred Shang Palace in Paris, I unfortunately cannot say A Wong is drastically better than the two Hakkasan locations or Kai that it deserves an extra star. Michelin award restaurants stars for culinary achievement but it has to be said that service, decor and even location can sway inspectors in a certain direction to believing a restaurant is better than it truly is. Which puzzles me as to why this restaurant is two Michelin stars when the food doesn’t stand out whatsoever and considering, as a previous review mentioned, it’s quite frankly poor location, premises, decor and not so perfect level of service. Considering Alex Dilling and Claude Bosi are two of the greatest restaurants in the country at the moment and are outperforming all the three stars, how A Wong can be the same star rating as them is poor judgment on Michelin’s behalf. The cost of the evening tasting menu is also grossly overpriced considering most dishes are tapas like in size (though so are L’Enclume’s so this may be a modern trend). For me, A Wong is not that different to Kai or the two Hakkasans and isn’t worth the extra cost at all, especially in the evening. It would be better to go in the daytime for dim sum and à la carte. A good restaurant but by no means a two Michelin starred restaurant sadly.

Unfortunately we live in Los Angeles or we would live at A Wong. We build our trips to London around eating the incredible dishes. I enjoy most Chinese food but this is way beyond any other Chinese food that we have had. Andrews gets two Michlin stars. He deserves three! I would give him five stars on a grade up to three stars. The rooms are delightful and tables are not squeezed together. The service is first class. Every person knows and carries out their job. They explain the different dishes. Nathalie, Andrew’s wife greets everyone and treats them like family. Roger Gibbons the general manager does the same thing. The staff, Ben helped us by taking pictures of us. Tashi remembered us from prior visits. Vaibhav and Jouves were our main servers. They were really great. Shelly also remembered us from prior visits. She was terrific. Michael the sommelier is so knowledgeable about Wine and helped select the best options. He is wonderful! Andrew Wong himself is extremely talented. He brings together food combinations from many parts of China. He is certainly not aloof. He is humble. What a treat for being a chef of his caliber. The first of the three days was dim sum lunch. Let first say that the food is indescribable in that there are so many incredible flavors blended together. My wife had the crispy spring roll lettuce wrap. She enjoyed it. Then she had the black pepper beef, whispy pastry with tamarind with dried shrimp caramel. Loved it! Followed by the forbidden city sweetcorn, wagu beef meat paste and black truffle. Salt and pepper French bean fritters. She loved this so much she could not wait to have it again on Saturday lunch. She finished with Wagu beef and lettuce fried rice and oyster emulsion. I had the pork and prawn dumpling with king crab, smoked tofu and lemon grass broth. It was phenomenal! Then the clear shrimp dumpling with sweet chili sauce and a rice vinegar cloud. So far I am dying and going to food heaven. Next I had the Cantonese kitchen barbecue pork crackling with prawn, plum and truffle. How does Andrew dream up such amazing food combinations? Let alone then produce them. Next abalone flaky tart with aged balsamic vinegar. Fabulous! 999 layered scallop puff with xo sauce. Yes another winner. Crab claw with tomato and wasabi. I loved it! Next was my absolute favorite. Garlic steamed wild tiger prawn, mung bean noodles and superior soy. OMG!!!! We had the steamed duck yolk custard bun. Heaven in a bun! Friday evening dinner was prefix and I left my notes at the restaurant. But let me reassure you everything was out of this world. I did post pictures of each dish for Friday. We went down stairs to a special room for dessert. I posted pictures of each dessert. All were special. Saturday we returned for dim sum lunch and selected some of the same dishes from our first lunch. Then we added some new dishes. First new dish wasIsle of Mull seared scallop and honey glazed Iberico pork cheung fun. Followed by bamboo pole noodles with king crab and spring onion-oil. These two dishes were fabulous. As you can tell I love everything about eating here. I encourage everyone to come here. Just leave me room for when my wife and I come to London. Thank you A Wong. I hope that I did not leave anyone out because everyone is terrific.

MORE AT TripAdvisor

I preface this by saying that I have been lucky enough to dine at many, many Michelin star restaurants, including a great number of two and three star restaurants. So I do not write this from a place of ignorance. In short, for the accolades, reputation and price point, we expected better in all areas: location, restaurant, service and food. Location - unfortunately not a great location, the street is very tired and run down and the neighbours are mostly cheap businesses and bars. Restaurant - the restaurant started off as a small family business in 1985, and unfortunately you can tell. The layout isn’t great for a luxury restaurant, with a very tired front conservatory area which really feels second-rate and cheap (we felt very sorry for those dining in that area) and another area which although better decorated still felt cramped with a poor flow of staff. Service - Okay, but poor for a Michelin starred restaurant. The level of information about the dishes was very high, which is great, however it often went on for so long that by the time the explanation had finished the food was cold! Some of the dishes on our dessert course which were frozen had almost entirely melted before we even got to taste them. There really needs to be more awareness from service that the food is being negatively impacted by the excessively long playing/introductions. We also had a ‘dedicated’ server, which is fine up until the point where you’re trying to ask that person for more rice for quite some time, only to find that they’re off giving one of the lengthy introductions to another table, and eventually just giving up. Food - Average. We opted for the 28 course collections of China menu, and really hoped to be blown away, but honestly it was a mix. There were some great dishes with well put together flavours and textures, but a fair number of ones that didn’t quite hit the mark for us. Fair enough, arguably you could chalk some of these down to personal preference, but really it felt lacking for a supposed two Michelin star experience. What is unequivocally unacceptable is the sheer number of hot dishes that were served lukewarm or turned cold before even being started due to the excessively long serving process and equally long introductions (for example the rice, perhaps the easiest dish to cook, was almost stone cold). All in all, we expected better and felt it was poor value for money. If you compare to other two Michelin star restaurants in London which are similarly priced (for example La Dame de Pic or The Ledbury) it is really lacking in all areas.

Chef Andrew Wong and Chef Albert Adrià created an exciting collaboration last night ⭐️💛⭐️ Spanish ingredients meet the art of Chinese dim sum. Fab food, signed menu, great experience. Now empty pockets 😀🥂🍾 The highlights for me were: the olive 🫒 that turned into an egg; the bubbly (almost 20 years old); the dim sum, and the Chefs. Plus being a Spanish speaker, I understood what was happening in the kitchen and I got a big smile from Albert 👍 One negative critique is that the bathroom is old and scruffy and when you are spending more money on dinner than flights to Dubai, I would expect a cleaner sparkling, new bathroom. #AWong #albertadria #dimsum #2023 #domperignon #elbulli

The food was average. The service was terrible. We were waiting approximately 1 hour, after we got a table, but after several time they told us to go upstairs instead of sitting to before selected table downstairs. In restaurant we found terrible not hygienic situation. The dirty dishes from around near people were eating their ordered food. We were waiting approximately 30 min our food. They brought noodles and vegetables first, after +30 min they brought ours ordered meat and it was cold. The staff were not polite. My recommendation is to find another place to eat. Don’t choose this restaurant!!!!

We went to Joy King Lau yesterday for dinner. Can absolutely not recommend this place. I got terrible food poising, presumably from the duck, which I only I had eaten. We ordered a quarter duck with plum sauce as a starter, cucumber salad, vegetarian gyoza and egg fried rice. On top of the food poisoning the food tasted only mediocre and came late.

Had relatively high hopes walking in, service was good and also prices for the dim sum dishes were fine. Ordered like 4 or 5 dim sum options for around 7£ each, I was thinking I may come here more often. Then the waiter was like do you want any vegetables and I was like yeah, some bok choi would be great please. So the food came and the rice Congee was good, the Bok Choi was good, the waiters were good, but the dumplings were quite average, below average and same as the beef Cheung, which was kind of supposed to be the highlight. I’ve dined at 1000+ Chinese restaurants and had dim sum all my life. This was below average apart from the rice and vegetables. At this point I was like this an ok restaurant, not sure if I’ll come again but it’s like alright… so the bill came and it was more than I expected, the other dishes were all 7£ but the bok choi was 20£. I asked if there was a manager around and he was like I am the manager. And I was like? Why did you give me the most expensive vegetable, I told him I saw bok choi for 7£ on another menu and he was like, that’s for the raw bok choi, we gave you the cooked one. And I was like well I was looking for just a cheap side of vegetables, some notice would’ve been nice, you mind taking off 10£? And he was just like na. And I was a bit like ok I’ll pay but it’s not great business. He was like I don’t mind at all, gave me very I don’t care vibes, just want that extra 10£. I was like you know I was interested in coming here possibly more often, I’m on Baker St a lot, I live around the area, this is just bad business and I’m looking for a good place for the occasional dim sum. And he was just like ‘I don’t care’. Was a bit strange, I said I wouldn’t write a great review and would’ve loved to come more often if he’d just been a bit more honest with the vegetable pricing, but the manager was very like, I don’t need you to be happy to make this business successful, so best of luck to him, I will be looking for other good Chinese restaurants.
