Very nice and waiter is welcoming , food is excellent, amazing steak and lovely lamb , however look out for the opening times as it is incorrect.

A lovely meal, great service and delicious food. I had the smoked haggis and black pudding parcel with creamy mustard sauce and my wife the broad bean and pea tart with goats cheese, we both had the plaice fillets with sauce vierge, saute potatoes and charred baby gem, sharing a raspberry creme brulee. Nothing was left on any plate. Reasonable pricing, as are the wines and local beers. Evening enjoyed!

Will opened up specially on a Sunday to cook a fabulous meal for my mother in law’s 90th birthday. There were 19 of us and all enjoyed their food, which was piping hot and cooked to perfection. The service was excellent and I would highly recommend

The chef here, Will, cooks delicious food and the night we ate there he was cooking on his own which is possibly why they had the fully booked sign and just 10 diners instead of the 20 capacity. Very sensible. The menu is pared down to a small number of starters and mains. The food was excellent. Scallops starter beautifully cooked, the haggis and black pudding with mustard and whisky sauce was rich, a large portion, delicious. The Moroccan salmon was cooked to perfection and the flavous were loved by my partner. The plaice fillets were a little dull but well cooked, charred lettuce a good accompaniment. We were too full for desserts, but stopped for a brief chat with Will through the service hatch and said how much we’d liked his cooking, not the first people to have done that whilst we were there.

Food was excellent and Megan made our evening with her witty banter, gave as good as she got!

Fab food and so much sourced locally. I had the pea and mint tart so tasty with a lovely side salad. My main was local sausages paired with puy lentils and red jus. Just perfect. A fab restaurant.

Never fails to impress. From booking, to welcome and service of a small, but varied, menu cooked and presented ready to be enjoyed. Star dish for me this time was the salmon, not usually my favourite fish but went so well with North African flavours, curry sauce and cranberry couscous. Always a pleasure. Thank you.

Food was fabulous. Starter: Local Scallops in a spicy sauce or smoked haggis and black pudding. Unusual but effective pairings. One Main lamb sous vide, a little fatty for our taste the other, Salmon in a tagine with cranberry couscous delicious. Service great. Booked solid, but half empty.

What a fabulous experience! The food, the service! I will drive here just for dinner! African salmon was amazing! Shared a scallop starter with hubby and the chef plated them separately. Nice touch, Chef Gill! Our waitress was bubbly and humorous and very attentive without being annoying.

Having frequented before was looking forward to returning. The return was equally as positive… good service and good food. Definitely a place to return and eat.

A small restaurant accessible upstairs in an unlikely setting. But very well worth the find! A very pleasant ambience, excellent service, a small but interesting menu, and we all three really enjoyed our food. Very worth visiting . Highly recommended.

Great food but some of the plates far too overfacing,I started with the scallops which were lovely,my wife had the haggis and blackpudding with whisky sauce which was absolutely delicious but far too much for a starter,maybe smaller amount on a smaller plate,she had ordered the rib eye steak for her main,it was huge and the chips were not good,she was so full after her starter,I had the lamb which was really nice,my dessert was the lemon posset,probably the best dessert I have had.good food but maybe concentrate on presentation and portion size,overall a good meal.

Having read the reviews we were looking forward to a good dining experience Not to be, had to resort to a steak knife to cut my pork which was quite a chewy ordeal. The service too was slow and unprofessional with a bottle of Rioja, not the one we ordered from the menu, being plonked down unopened on the table without the usual offer to taste. Disappointing !

We really enjoyed our meal at the Auld Alliance. They use great local ingredients and prepare them with considerable skill. The waiting staff were friendly and professional. This restaurant offered really good value for money for the quality of food provided

Fantastic evening with wonderful food!! We were so well looked after by great staff - brilliant locally sourced food with delish French twist. Also brilliant value. Staff couldn’t do enough to make us feel happy - home baked bread and all so nicely done .. loved my pork loin. Can’t wait to return when we visit Kirkcudbright again l!

A wonderful meal in this quirky upstairs restaurant. Fresh homemade bread, then starters of haggis in a whisky based sauce and scallops with caviar and chorizo, yum! Our mains were Cullen Skink, a terrific blend of tastes, ( my husband’s words!) and my pork loin with so many interesting flavours in the sauce, the delicious roast potatoes and red cabbage, honestly every mouthful was just a pleasure to savour. Our lovely waitress was friendly and attentive and looked after us very well. Thank you Will, for all your hard work, it was greatly appreciated.

Superb food and service from this intimate first floor restaurant. As a coeliac, very impressed by personal attention from the chef - virtually everything could be adapted for gluten-free. Succulent lamb in a tagline was excellent and the posset probably the best ever! Thoroughly recommended but you MUST book ahead to be certain of a table.

Visited this restaurant during our latest holiday to Kirkcudbright. I opted for a rib eye steak which was cooked medium as requested and it was very tender. The star, however, was the pink peppercorn and cranberry sauce which was delicious. Only downside was that my wife is vegetarian and she mentioned this on booking. She was therefore disappointed to be given no choice for either starter or main course.

First time at this lovely restaurant , here on holiday and friends recommended it ..we had the french onion soup , the scallops and Camembert as starters all were really good. I thought the scallops caviar and chorizo was amazing each complimented each other with the taste. For mains we tried the lamb tagine which was gorgeous the fusion of ingredients complemented each other .. We all really enjoyed our food .The presentation was also great . The service was also really good our waitress was lovely very friendly and helpful ( sorry I forgot her name ) would definitely recommend and we will be back .

Were attracted to this restaurant as we were looking for somewhere a little different for our end of holiday deal. I made the reservation on line and received a prompt response from Will, the owner/chef. We were made very welcome and appreciated the easy conversation of Will. We dined early and were the first guests but by the time we left the restaurant was comfortably full with around 16 covers. Will has developed several dishes with imaginative takes on traditional Scottish dishes by incorporating French and Moroccan influences. All ingredients were of a high standard and the presentation mouth-watering.

My brother and his wife, who are local booked this as they had heard good reports about this restaurant. It was one of the best meals we’ve had for a long time, with a compact menu, but full of temptation. All three courses were beautifully cooked, presented and served with a smile. Unusually these days I was very pleasantly surprised when presented with the bill too, it was outstanding value. We look forward to revisiting the restaurant…and my brother!

Just brilliant. You can taste the effort that’s gone into each dish in every fork full. Easy to book direct via email with Will. Lady serving was caring but unobtrusive. .Would definitely visit again. Thoroughly enjoyable. Haggis/ black pudding/ wrapped in bacon was truly divine. I could have eaten 4 of them with a bottle of wine and left!

Auld Alliance is a unique and exceptional restaurant. Superb flavours, presentation, service and culinary artistry are abundant. We enjoyed our meal in every possible sense from start to finish. We so wish there were restaurants like this where we live in Lancashire.

Three delicious meals here this evening. We took my sister for a belated birthday dinner and we all had some amazing food. Great portion sizes, everything cooked to perfection and perfectly seasoned. They had even put some birthday banners up as it's mentioned it was a birthday meal which was a very thoughtful touch. Friendly and pleasant staff and efficient service. I'd recommend booking if you plan to go as it's a busy wee place but well worth a visit. Top marks!

We wanted to come here for ages and when we finally did, it was well worth it. We both ate from the Christmas menu and it was spectacular, huge compliments to Will, a very talented chef. The baked camembert in particular was just beautiful. We were well looked after by Megan and Ella too, service with a smile! We definitely look forward to returning.

My husband and I recently visited the auld alliance for a birthday dinner. We both ate off the Christmas menu and everything was delicious! Friendly an attentive staff and the chef is brilliant. Visited when it was a mussels & beer night so hubby had them as a starter. Made him share (had the ones done in wine & garlic) and they were absolutely delicious. Pork & trout dishes as mains, then posset and brulee for desserts. Couldn't fault any part of the evening at all, every course was spot on. Thank you for making the last night of our holiday (and an early anniversary celebration!) so enjoyable! Thoroughly recommend eating here if you're in the area.

Celebrated a birthday on 16th June '23 and we were not disappointed. Service was very good and food was amazing. We must have been lucky, we phoned for a table just the night before and got one. The prices were great too! Thank you Will Gill for cooking such a lovely meal for me and my husband and thank you also to the lovely young waitress who worked her socks off in such intense heat!

So lucky to find this lovely restaurant. The food was superb, all beautifully prepared. The venison was so tender in a Moroccan tagine with lovely spices. Accompanied with a lovely salad and truffle sauce.

We were looking forward to this restaurant, but unfortunately it didn't live up to our expectations. The dishes looked beautiful, but the starter with the smoked blue cheese panna cotta lacked flavor. The main course with the trout seemed promising, but it lacked flavor and was completely overshadowed by the very sour cabbage. The dish with the game was also a poor combination, as the Moroccan spices completely overpowered the meat. Individually, the dishes were good, but the combination did not work well. The salad was also dressed too sourly. Even the dessert sauce was too sour, completely overshadowing the panna cotta.

Ate there for the first time with my family. Excellent food that was absolutely on point. My wife said the Cullen Skink Gratin was one of the best meals she has eaten in the UK. Will Gill, the chef, obviously takes pride in putting together his dishes.

Great find on a cold Friday night in Kirkcudbright. We managed to secure a table - it’s worth ringing in case of cancellations. Salmon and Scallops starters were light, fresh and full of flavour. Mains of Venison and Turkey were excellent - particularly impressed with the presentation of the Turkey Christmas Meal - everything on the plate was so full of flavour, fantastic gravy which was so rich and plentiful. Good wine list and lovely service. Highly recommended.

As we entered the picturesquely quaint, small town of Kirkcudbright, my mum and I felt right at home. This was reflected by the stellar reception and personal, warm welcome of both the staff and chef of this wonderfully cute, little restaurant. Our order was taken, prepared and served quickly. Enough time for a nice chat and to get comfy. The food itself would easily put a number of luxury restaurants I've experienced to shame. Perfectly cooked and seasoned, and it was absolutely delicious. Thank you Will and staff for a wonderful evening in your cozy and comfortable establishment. We will return. Highly recommended.

As we entered the picturesque, little, quaint town of Kirkcudbright, we felt at home. On entering the restaurant we were met with a very warm and accommodating welcome. Even the chef himself came out to greet us with a warm smile. Service was top notch and the food was on another level. Rarely have I tasted such rich and flavoursome offerings, prepared and served quickly, above and beyond what I have previously sampled in a few luxury establishments. Highly recommended

We took our staff here for a late Christmas meal. The attention to detail from Chef Will Gill and communication with him regarding our menu was fantastic, he even had Christmas crackers for us which was a bonus, considering it was March!! The meal itself was fantastic, starters, mains and sweets were had and simply could not fault anything. The staff are attentive, the drinks flowed and a brilliant night had by us all, we shall be back very soon. Thank you to Will, Tracy and staff for accommodating us and giving us such an amazing evening.

What a great surprise to find this pleasantly appointed, comfortable, clean and welcoming restaurant tucked away in the holiday town and live fishing harbour of Kirkcudbright!Super menu catering for gluten free and veggie diners as well as carnivores with a delightful mix of French and Scottish cuisine prepared and presented to high standards. Tim the owner runs a friendly ship and the waitress on the night couldn’t have done more to make our visit the most enjoyable experience.We’ll definitely be back

I would like to commend the front-of-house gentleman with whom I spoke twice today. First this morning to make a reservation, second - when because of unforeseen circumstances - I had to cancel with three hours notice. I understand how restaurants have suffered in the last two years and we all know from the press the high levels of "no shows". The gentleman to whom I explained my situation was polite, courteous and professional.It has redoubled my enthusiasm for tasting the food at this restaurant which has such good reviews.

We visited in August 2020 and thoroughly enjoyed our food, the service and overall experience.The menu this time was similar if not exactly the same. Good welcome, bread served and drinks orders taken. Lovely home made bread. Starters were great - scallops and the pear and goats cheese.I had enjoyed the Dijon pork last time but decided to have a change so ordered ribeye steak. Unfortunately it was not as tender as hoped and while £5 was taken off the bill it was still a disappointment. My wife’s choice of trout was very good. The deserts of crème brûlé were good.The restaurant was very busy, only one vacant table so unfortunately the service was too slow, whether waiting for table to be cleared or for waiting on the bill. We waited patiently but other diners approached the bar to ask for theirs but had to sit back down and wait.So while the cooking and dishes are predominantly great, and the butcher blamed for the steak; I think that the service should be improved by having more staff or by limiting the number of customers. I don’t think that saying it is a small restaurant is a justification for slow service.

A mid week dinner looked promising, the menu looked good. We were greeted by a friendly waitress and showed to our table. Warm and friendly ambiance. I ordered a starter haggis and black pudding, followed by sausage and red cabbage. I had a very nice pint of Galloway gold, served at a perfect temperature. My starter and main were both very tasty. Clearing away between courses was on the slow side. The wait for a dessert menu was much longer, I nearly gave up. When I did get my dessert it was very good, Creme brûlée. We asked for our bill and then waited 10- 15 minutes for it to arrive. Having checked it when we got home we had been overcharged for our starter. All in all a distinctly average meal with very slow service.

First visit but certainly won't be the last, will book again when we next visit Kirkcudbright. Food was excellent, fresh local produce,spoiled for choice with the menu very varied. Great service and very reasonable prices. Would highly recommend if you are in the area.

Beautiful food, the chef clearly takes pride in the dishes he prepares and serves. An interesting small menu which focuses on local fresh produce with a French twist on Scottish dishes. A little gem of a place where you need to book days or weeks in advance, feel fortunate to have eaten here.

We visited on a friends recommendation whilst visiting Borgue. The food is top restaurant quality at a very reasonable price. There is no stinginess to the portion sizes either. My wife was blown away by the red cabbage which she says was the best she had ever had. The whole meal was top class with all top quality ingredients. The dessert was absolute class. The staff were attentive and very approachable. If we only lived closer it would certainly be a regular visit. We wish Will (the chef} continued success.

We have just had the most wonderful meal at the Auld Alliance, Kirkudbright, exquisitely cooked and served by an obviously very talented chef and his staff. One of us had the pork and the other the stuffed pepper - each was fine dining at its best, with unusual but delicious tastes. We have eaten in many restaurants both in the UK and abroad…. This is easily up there with the Michelin starred ones, despite the sole owner/chef. Thank you for the lovely dining experience! We’ll pass it on !!!!

We visited during a recent visit to Dumfries and Galloway, staying in Kirkcudbirght.Everything about The Auld Alliance was excellent. A good range of dishes, very well prepared and presented, washed down by a very enjoyable wine and benefitting from excellent service.We would thoroughly recommend a visit here for anyone staying in Kirkcudbright.
