This restaurant boasts a beautiful location set inside a private gated entrance. The staff here are incredibly friendly from the moment you walk in. The service can not be faulted - not rushed and well paced between dishes. Good wine menu! The food, on the other hand, whilst beautifully presented, didn't quite deliver on flavour. Lots of fancy tricks and skills on display, but somehow, the food was just missing the mark on taste. Portion sizes are a little small (expected in fine dining), but this isn't the fine dining you come to expect from fine french cuisine. As a result, we felt the prices were a little ambitious for the food. The main beef dish at £32.00 for two small pieces of beef (chewy, not tender) was a little excessive. We've had better for cheaper in well established Michelin Star restaurants. Auberge Du Lac has so much potential of which I'm sure it will tap into soon! Keep up the good work 👏

The absolutely beautiful building and setting really gives a wonderful first impression.. However upon entry it was quite clear that the Interior Design really needed an update/uplift/some love (I'm available). I didn't notice a pre meal bar as we were led straight down the old stairs to the restaurant which immediately looks super dated. No cosy fixed seating, sensitive lighting, luxurious furniture or anything sumptuous for that matter. It felt a bit stuffy and pretentious which thankfully eased as the afternoon progressed and the Guests changed. Contrastingly, the staff service throughout was exceptional, warm, welcoming, obviously well trained... The main event...the food very hit and miss. The main negative being that my wives' meal arrived luke warm... so she sat through the whole main watching us eat then we did the same afterwards. Not good enough at the prices being paid i'm afraid, very very disappointing. In terms of the food quality, the canapes, focaccia and starters were all delicious and well presented. The roast pork belly was sadly, underwhelming. The potatoes and Colliflower cheese aside, it lacked flavour, heat and finesse. The pork belly was so fatty it had barely any meat texture. Soggy pre made Yorkshires, thin tasteless gravy and watery veg though nicely presented were just poor.. Being a Northerner, bad gravy is unforgiveable! The caramel tart desert was back up to a high standard to finish the meal well though my wives chocolate cake was dry and pretty much like a generic birthday cake in flavour. My daughters fixed children meal displayed so little finesse and cooking skill it could have been any pub, anywhere... just here at more than double the price. This place has amazing 'bones' and potential but smacks as 'set ones way' and complacency. Sorry to say with the abundance of local options, we are unlikely to return :o(

Our experience with the Director of Auberge du Lac, Michael Longshaw, was nothing short of appalling. We held our wedding at Brocket Hall Estate - encompassing Auberge du Lac - and the day was tragically overshadowed by an incident involving a Brocket Hall staff member. Despite this, neither Auberge du Lac nor Brocket Hall management has acknowledged any responsibility or offered an apology for the distressing events. Their complete lack of basic human decency is shocking, especially coming from a venue that prides itself on delivering exceptional experiences. The way Auberge du Lac and Brocket Hall management, under Michael Longshaw’s leadership, has handled the situation since has only further highlighted their disregard for customer care and compassion—qualities that are essential for a prestigious restaurant or wedding venue. If you’re considering hosting a wedding or dining event at Brocket Hall Estate, including Auberge du Lac, I’d be more than happy to share our experience in detail. Looking at the attached pictures (we have opted for the less severe ones here), I'm reminded of the letter Michael Longshaw sent us, where he claimed, "I do not believe that your celebration was materially affected by the tragic conduct of an individual." This "individual" was, in fact, a member of Brocket Hall's staff, whom Michael, as the Director of Auberge du Lac, tries to distance from the restaurant. However, it’s important to remember that this "individual" was ultimately the responsibility of the Brocket Hall estate as their employer.

Visited for a birthday meal in the family, had the set Sunday 3-course lunch, which was great! A good variety of options and lovely food. Staff and waiters very friendly, welcoming and knowledgeable. They also didn’t keep pestering the table like some restaurants do, which was very nice - a great balance of attentiveness and distance. As expected, an excellent location and atmosphere inside. Lovely fresh ingredients used from onsite gardens etc. Food and portion size probably not quite worth the price you pay, but there are lots of nice little additions and extras to the meal (amuse-bouche, desert sweets etc) and you ultimately pay that little extra for the great service and location. Free parking onsite too.

We have had 2 dinners for 4 and then 8 in past 3 weeks. Absolutely perfect. As I am into food I asked re how various dishes were in fact prepared - Chef was with us explaining all the hows etc Would thoroughly recommend the Gavi de Gavi white - excellent!! Not bad, just could be better. Some good food. We went for Sunday lunch. We were brought out some lovely rosemary bread for pre starters, I then had a a tasty veloute ( posh word for soup! ), then a very nicely cooked beef done pink. Desserts were a bit underwhelming. Service was friendly, personable but unfortunately rather amateurish. Can be difficult to define good service, but I think it includes always checking with diners a few mins after serving if all is okay - which didn’t happen. Also I think waiters should always been able to clearly describe the dishes. For example we asked what the tonka dessert was and got a garbled description of something that was “weird”, “unique”, and “immense” - which didn’t really help the decision making process! The building is a lovely, old structure right on a lake, which I expect would be glorious on a summer evening. Decor inside is rather tired looking though. I think it could be great, probably just a matter of training up their staff better as they seemed pretty nice people really and maybe thinking about how to get the desserts giving a bit more bang for their buck. Wish them success and maybe try them out again next year, if this review hasn’t upset them too much and they make a few improvements!

A slightly bizarre experience - we were welcomed warmly, taken to our table, and given a menu for pre-dinner drinks. No food menus were brought. We ordered drinks, which arrived, but still no menus! So we asked for them. No wine list brought. So we asked for one. All rather odd. The starters were mixed - a bland crab risotto, a rather vinegary tartare, an excellent parfait and a crispy egg which needed to be runnier, but was tasty, if too salty. The odd service continued: three of the four of us had finished do the waiter cleared our plates including the one of our friend who hadn’t finished, who was left holding a cracker in her hand! The mains were again mixed and generally over salty. The ravioli were excellent; the steak good but in a sauce which was heavy handed on the seasoning, the fish pleasant, again slightly salty and verging on the overcooked. We had chocolate soufflé for pudding - generally well-made and tasty, but again the service was odd - an ice cream was pushed into it at the table by the waiter which caused a good amount of soufflé to fall inelegantly onto the serving plate; the cheese plate was an interesting but small selection of well-kept cheese. Good petit fours (though we were surprised that one containing nuts was offered to us all despite one of us not eating nuts, which we had mentioned). So probably four stars over all, but only just. It’s good to see the restaurant open again but based on this experience, while it’s fine dining, it’s got some way to go to reach the standard of cooking I’m sure they’d like to aspire to.

Nothing was a problem, they were happy to chat briefly and were full of smiles. One noisy table did upset us at one point, but the staff were very quick to request they tone it down. The welcome snack (something with pea and avocado) was delicious, as were the petit fours at the end (and since we don't eat in high end restaurants very often we did not know or expect these). Starters were delicious. Duck parfait, ricotta tart, scallops, sea bass. Such a lot of flavour! Mains were fantastic. Beef, lamb, haddock, risotto and sides of salad and Garden veg. Desserts superb. Stepping up to the building it seemed very low key, but as you walk in and go downstairs to the dining area, the dining room and outdoor area (where we had our meal) were really picturesque. Bilal was great as our host - friendly, welcoming, funny and great to chat to! The location was fantastic too - just over the river from the golf clubhouse, the quaint building which the restaurant was in offered great views back across to the golf club. The food was really well presented and tasted as good as it looked (it was a shame to ruin some of the dishes by sticking cutlery into it!) There was something for everyone too with a good mix of meat, pasta and other vegetarian options on the menu. A great experience! Well worth the price. Thanks again to Bilal and the team for being so welcoming and making our meal memorable.

What a lovely evening as usual. They really are working towards a very warm and welcoming place to meet and eat. Aperitifs on the river terrace is a must Lovely watching Bilal working so hard helping the younger staff. George was great, very informative and charming. Good for them when recruiting is so difficult these days in the entertainment industry Amy at front of house is superb As for the food, say no more Looking forward to returning very soon Warm Regards Nigel & Karen Bass

We we’re lucky enough to dine here during their soft opening. We had a delicious meal and could not fault it in any way. Scott was particularly attentive, he recommended an incredible Argentinian Malbec which paired with the lamb that we enjoyed on the night. We’ll look forward to returning soon.

What a fabulous lunch here, the new chef has compiled a menu that is difficult to choose from. Whilst all 3 courses were of the quality we expected from Auberge (perfectly cooked scallops and cod) the dessert was a show stopper. The front of house staff are attentive and relaxed, add in the beautiful surroundings and it's a lunch not to be missed.

Valentines night - we understand it’s a pop up prior to the main opening. We’ve supported previous incarnations of auberge over the years with Christoff and others and so keen to try and spend our money locally. Venue is amazing - staff trying so hard and no bad marks for effort. Reality was food was in the main ok but too salty on the fish and beef dishes. Wine was explained as limited which was fine but then to find the gavi Di gavi had run out and Pinot Grigio was the alternative …. Come on. We’re not having much luck in restaurants lately as a recent trip to the grandison for a burns night was a complete joke with 2 haggis provided for the whole guest list. We also went to the bricklayers arms in Flaunden last Saturday - OMG - if any of the other gastro pubs or 5* restaurants want to try and survive - I suggest you go there - 11/10 for everything - food, quality wine by the glass ( not cheap rubbish) and service- amazing. Finally back to auberge- it would have been nice for the head chef to have come around the tables to take feedback- Alas it didn’t happen- answer is less salt, make sure you have a wine range in stock and then we wish you well and hope it’s a success

Really disappointing. Although the food was actually really good the place really needs a major overhaul. The interior is so dated, and the smell as you enter is like a school canteen. The waiter asked if we wanted to see the wine list but quickly...

Joanna greeted us with a very welcoming smile as we entered the restaurant. She was very cheerful, helpful and professional throughout our visit. Joanna showed a real interest in her customers and was keen to ensure we were happy with everything as the meal proceeded. Her service and attention to detail, as well as her affable nature and lovely sense of humour, definitely enhanced our experience at this restaurant. We cannot recommend certain dishes as they did not come up as a choice, but we would have done if they had. The food was delicious, desserts as well, and also the wine. Thank you Joanna for your thoughtful, professional approach and natural affinity with customers.

Lovely pub with lots of local walks, dog friendly bar and more formal restaurant. Food is excellent what you want for snacks with a glass or warmer plates to recover from a long stroll. It is next to the A1 which can be noisy outside. Quiet relief inside with a warm fire at this time of year
