Really happy about our meal , Small confusion about delivery times as wanted to pre order for 7:30pm but arrived an hour early but all replaced. Best madras and bhuna we’ve ever eaten and price was amazing for the amount of food recieved . Great communication from the delivery driver . Would highly recommend and will use again when next up here

Ali’s was always the curry house that set the standard for me. Unfortunately these days it sets a very poor standard. The onion bhajis we had tonight were so dry they were un-edible. Rest of the food was OK, but considering how it was, to how it now is!!… Disappointing.

My daughter, not working, still a student, used her birthday money to treat herself to a curry from the restaurant!! She got her delivery. The Korma was £6.50 and cold!! There was no rice!!!!! Chinese restaurants always give rice and the naan bread … well … I won’t comment. Delivery was £2.50. Her charge was £11.50 for a bleek, bland meal which she used birthday money for a treat! Hang your beads in shame !! Please everyone, stay clear.

This online ordering website has got to be the worst in Western Europe. Spent fifteen minutes trying to order one meal, one Naan and one rice dish before I gave up. You log in with your account and expect it to work. After trying my best to remove the five bloody Naan breads from the check out and the two meals that I had ordered two weeks ago, I gave up and decided to walk to the place only to find that IT WAS BLOODY SHUT! Why when all the pizza shops were still open at 10? You can't pay with a card at the Ali Taj so you would think that the ordering system would be good? I have better things to do with my time than spend half an hour trying to order three items online when it quicker t to walk to a nearer curry house and order it there.

Ordered a chilli chicken and a chicken korai to share. Both tasted the same except one had green peppers and the other had old tame green chillies in. Both sauces were too thick and clumpy. No zing! Very disappointed as we don't get takeaways very often. A far cry from the restaurant standard they once had when we would have ordered the same. Naan bread was the star of the show, as always. Won't rush back.

Had a fantastic meal from here with my husband. It was delivered within half an hour although they said it may be an hour. Great start. The Naan breads were the best I’ve tasted. Not too thick or thin, just perfect. Mushroom pilau was very tasty. Chicken vindaloo- a perfect heat and I do love hot food. A perfect texture, consistency and very flavoursome. Chicken jalfrezi was very juicy and tasty too. Will 100% be back to try out the rest of the menu.

Visited friends who live locally and like this takeaway. We all ordered and had it delivered. Terrible place. 6 of us visited on Sunday 28th August. The lady who seated us was nice. The elderly gentleman got pissed off when we tried to order the meals individually. When the starters arrived, most were cold. When approached they took the same tandoori chicken, microwaved it and served it to us. When the mains arrived all the rice were cold. When we wanted to speak to the manager the elderly gentleman came forward and told us they can't warm up the food because that's all they serve. Also told us to leave!! Food was mediocre but what killed this place is the service. We have never received such terrible service from anywhere. Anyone like us who's just visiting whitehaven try the persian takeaway, we got burgers from them. Much better service and food.

We came to the Ali Taj on a Monday evening because the restaurants in Cockermouth were closed. The restaurant looks a bit tired from the outside, but once inside it is large, clean and well presented. We were the only people there to start with (it was 6pm on a Monday evening!), we were served promptly. The menu was standard Indian restaurant menu and seemed a little pricey. We all ordered different things, the food came and the portions were massive. It was more than just dull one pot cooking, although I wouldn't describe it as outstanding food, but it was more than reasonable and more to the point we enjoyed.

With the Sunday evening meal offer, I assumed that portions would be slightly reduced. Not so, a huge amount of food for a very reasonable price. Our main courses were very similar, though that was partly down to bad ordering and regional variations with dhansak (as a southern dweller I think they should be spicier and more lentilly and pineapple free, but they change for the worse up north). The side dishes were particularly good, and the naan the best I've had for ages. Service good, the slightly grumpy owner adding a wonderful touch. He's very hot on allergy advice, unsurprisingly after the man over the road got into trouble. No mention on the menu/window as to whether the restaurant's halal, and don't like to make an issue by asking, so avoided chicken/lamb just in case they were halal.

Instead of having a takeaway it's cheaper to sit in and eat far too much then try to waddle home to burn off some of the calories. You really will be pleased with the quality and price of the food.

So the Ali Taj is easily one of my favourite restaurants. It's quite rare to get something that's just not quite right, but this was one of those times. This meal was a takeaway, which although admittedly wasn't tremendously bad but it was bad enough to talk about, because it's just not acceptable. We had meat samosas and chicken pakora to start which is a favourite of mine and very occasionally you get served meat so fresh it's moist and juicy and the pastry is fresh and supply - my mouth is watering at the thought. But not this time. I suspect that the meat samosas and chicken pakora were reheated from some past serving. They were unacceptably tough and dry. The rest of the meal was decidedly average and tasted again like it had been reheated. Now, I'm not sure what's going on in there but with cash only being accepted and the carpets are extremely dirty, I wonder if he's winding down for retirement. Definitely it's not up to the same kind of standard as it has been, though I'm sure when it does close there'll be a gap in the market for a very good Indian restaurant.

Apart from people coming in for takeaway's it was very quiet. Service was prompt by the owner and drinks were served sharp. We got the usual popadoms and spices which were nothing flash to be honest. Shortly after waiter came to take the mains order. I ordered chicken rogan josh, pilau rice and keema nan. The meat was plentiful but the flavour was not there. Rogan sauce was bland with little taste. Rice was ok and the nan bread was very nice. Overall a very average meal. In general we had no complaints from our group and everyone left happy.

Ate here as a group of 10 for a family birthday meal on Sunday night. Sunday evenings is advertised as 6 courses for £10.95. For us course one was poppadum and dips which were put out within minutes of us arriving, then we got to choose a starter as course two, course three was our main meal, course 4 was a rice or nan bread and course 5 was a side dish. courses 2 to 5 are all served at the same time. Course 6 was a tiny shot of coffee. We were also allowed to swap a side dish for another nan or rice dish. The service was good but the owner started taking orders when people were still choosing from the menu, however we never had to ask for a drink and the rest of the service was great. The most important thing is the food and it was all very good, the starters we liked best were the chicken chat served as mini curry on a mini nan bread, but the garlic mushrooms were also very good. I would recommend the chicken tikka mosalla as it is always excellent but the chicken karahi was also excellent and served in a sizzling dish. We felt uncomfortable so we left our food and asked for it to be bagged so we could pay our bill and leave. But we went in to try to find staff, after a few minutes someone came out of the kitchen and pointed us to a table. Friendly staff who were very pleasant (seeing as we were there bang on 5pm) and didn't rush us to order. We had starters of chicken tikka (plentiful but dry), onion bhaji (lovely) and samosas(hard pastry but tasty filling). Mains were one mixed and one prawn balti (lovely, full of flavour), chicken jalfrezi (a lurid red colour which was slightly off putting, but tasted much better than it looked), and another mixed curry that was again full of flavour. 3 lemonades and a pint of strongbow (poured out of a 2litre bottle) came to £57.25. I nearly asked the woman at the counter to check the price again. Its a shame they don't do half portions for children cos we had two with us that wanted to try something new. We did enjoy our meal and service was pleasant but we may just try the takeaway service next time and save a view pounds.

The food was served and prepared in a short period of time, and was to a high quality - two dishes were ordered. The chicken tikka, ordered as a starter, was well flavoured, warm and succulent. The lamb jalfrezi was provided sizzling, with two well sized plain nans ordered (careful not to touch the dish in which it is served, including the handles! It will burn!) Again the food was well flavoured. A wide array of spice options were present, going from mild to hot.Would go there again!

We had booked a table for four of us and not one of us could complain about our meals,The service was good as it usually is they were having a laugh and a joke with us.We have been going to Ali's for over twenty years so we are on friendly terms with the owner and his staff very helpful,We have tried Akash just over the road and I for one would not go back there. The food is always lovely & fresh and the portions are very good I always end up taking some home with us.

Ordered a takeaway and was informed it would be an hour, after an hour rang to see where it was and was told it had left 5 minutes ago, an hour later it arrived and was only just warm. Onion bhajis were on a bed of soggy wilted salad and naan breads were cold, (we are only a ten minute drive away) also I'm a vegetarian and found a chunk of chicken in my vegetable main dish!! Not impressed and will not be using this place again.

Disappointed with my first and last visit to Ali Taj.Jalfrezi sauce lacked was watery and lacked any intensity of flavour. Chicken tikka tasted to me like it had been reheated. The restaurant is very poorly decorated and furnished and is poorly lit - more like a canteen. The only redeeming feature was that service was quick, albeit a little over-bearing. The waiter cleared my table literally as soon as put my knife and fork down.

We eat here regularly. The food is always good and prices are very reasonable. Some of the poor reviews must be made up. I have eaten at many curry houses across the country. None have been better.

I have picked up food from here only once, last week. This joint is located at the harbour main street in Whitehaven. The decor inside in just about OK. I ordered a full tandoori chicken for 9 quid and waited for 15 minutes. I came back and picked up the parcel on the counter. As I walked back to the car, the weight felt light and I thought I should check what's in the bag. I'm glad I did. I got 2 grilled chick thighs. Now that's not a full chicken, is it ? I went back to the restaurant to make my point. I argued that in London, you'd get a full chicken....a full chicken grilled for £7. I even showed him how a full chicken looks like with a shape, displayed by my hands. The manager said that what he has given, is the correct portion . I was perplexed and drove back to my room. The chicken was grilled ok with good tenderness. But I won't be ordering from here anymore. Sorry no photos....Respect for other patrons.

First experience of eating at this restaurant, and hopefully my last..the waiter was brusque and a little unfriendly, the decor is grubby and dated..this i could live with if the food was any good..but it was terrible..chicken curry was tastless and watery, the rice wasn't much better..would have been better off buying a 95p value meal from Tesco...definatley wouldn't recommend this place

Ate at this restaurant and the whole experience was horrible. When entering the building I chose a table next to the window only to be told I could not sit there and given another table. When I sat down the table cloth was badly stained and there were crumbs everywhere which looked from the previous guests nan bread. When I complained the waiter brushed the crumbs away with his hand. I told him the table cloth was still stained and he just walked away ignoring me. I ordered my food and when it arrived all I can say good about it was it was hot. It was not like any other garlic tikka Chicken I had tasted in other Indian restaurants for the last twenty years. I stirred it around on my fork for a while , paid the bill and left. I wasn't even asked why I had not eaten my dinner. I would avoid this restaurant at all costs.

Myself and my Husband ate here at the weekend and it was the worst meal we've ever had!! We got Dansak which is lentil based, there was no lentils!! It was like puréed baby food & bright orange??!!! It had no flavour & was just very hot to taste. We both left all of our food. We had to ask for the bill three times. We didn't get asked why we left so much food! The restaurant itself is very dated and gruby. I would never set foot in that place ever again, everything about it was awful!!

My family and I are visiting the area and, so far, have found this to be the best of the three restaurants we have dined at. The service was prompt and pleasant, and the food was simply delicious! Overall, the ambience/atmosphere could be improved but the quality of the meal, friendliness and efficiency of the staff and great value for money, more than make up for anything else that this establishment may lack. Bravo, Ali Taj! I am happy to give you my recommendation!

I have tried many Indians in the area but I keep on returning to the Ali Taj. The choice of food is great and are really good value for money. Don't let the outside of the building fool you the quality of service and food is first rate. They also do take away, which is also a great bonus. They really need to get a website up for themselves.

I would like to start my review by saying, we tried another two restaurants within the space of a week and this was fly far the best. Why is this? The food is amazing, I had chicken tikka masala and was left stuffed, nthe range of food was amazing and the value was incredible. I don't think anybody finished there meal, and all enjoyed it immensely. The service was quick polite and always attentative, checking up on us regularly asking if we needed drinks, and just being kind. The food came reasonably quickly, we were waiting for about 10 minuets. I would say the only fall was when they gave us pompadoms they charged us 1.20 each when in the menu they say something cheaper. However they gave us the amount that we asked for. And the table cloth had a stain on (but if they changed that every time someone spilled something then he amounts needed would be endless!)Paying for our meals individually was also not a problem, this helped us all greatly as we couldn't work out swapping money around! But I was wonderful, the staff the food the atmosphere were all second to non. I will be returningThank you

I've been frequenting Ali Taj for over four or five years now being a local (the resturaunt is 30 mins away from my home), and i havent had any bad experiences. There are times when Ali Taj gets busy and the staff panic a bit, but other than that ive had fond memories of this hidden gem in Whitehaven. After reading a few of the other reviews, i was surprised to hear some folk having dissapointing experiences. As far as i know, and i have spoken to him, the owner of the resturaunt is called Ali, hence Ali Taj, and his resturaunt has been there for a long time with his family always owning the resturaunt (it hasnt changed hands.)This place is ideal for anyone wanting a really good tasting curry. All the curries ive had there have been nothing short of amazing and basically everyone i've taken there for a meal has loved it, the experience, the food, oh and their drinks!!! Their Kingfisher on tap is a really good pint.Ali Taj is situated beside the harbour too so its worth a visit before you go to eat. Also the walking beforehand will make you feel less guilty about having a delicious curry!

I recently visited Ali Taj for a friends birthday meal. Everything was wonderful, the only thing I wasn't happy about was the poppodoms, as they gave us enough for the whole group but 2 of us didn't like them.. We later found out we had to pay £1.20 each for one even though 2 of us didn't want one.

I have been to the Ali Taj a number of times over the last few years and up until now I considered it to be one of the best Indian Restaurants in the UK. I visited it recently. Firstly I noticed that the waiter from the Cleator Moor Indian Restaurant appeared to be in charge. (not a good sign the Cleator Moor Restaurant is a dump). On this occasion we ordered the food we ordered was poor at best, the restaurant was cold and all in all it was a very poor experience. As it is a long way from my home in Barrow, I will not be returning to the Ali Taj. I hope my experience is a one off as this place used to be so good.

As mentioned in other reviews, this place doesn't look great from outside. Inside isn't great either and reminds me of Inidan restaurants in the 90s. The staff are friendly but not overbearing as they can be in some Inidan restaurants. When we needed a drink we got a drink, when we were ready to order they took our order - no repeatadly asking if your meal is ok or filling your glass everytime you drank an inch of lager from the top. The food was really good, not the best i've ever had but up there. The elderly owner was there aswell, quirky but a nice man. Finally, it was cheap!

Tried this restaurant on some friends' recommendation. It was great- good, well cooked and tasty food, good sized portions at reasonable prices and it also did not take long for us to get our order despite the restaurant being fairly busy. The service was also excellent, attending to us immediately. Decor was a bit on the simpler side but that is trumped by the food. The one minus point was the music- one indian song repeated all through the night, though that would not deter me from going there again.
