2 friends & I stopped off here for brunch when out on a walk. The cafe itself is lovely, spotless & lots of room. I went up to order us 3 teas & 3 bacon toasties. I was asked if I wanted a side salad & crisps with the toasties. I said yes, assuming it was included in the £4.95 price. The toastie was tasty & had a few crisps & a handful of lettuce. But when I went to pay, was charged £2 extra per toastie! We all felt that this was over the top for what would normally be included anyway. The total bill was £27, which we felt was too much. Don't think we will be back 😏

Hidden down a little lane at the east end of the High Street this little cafe is a wee gem and well worth a visit. They have an amazing selection of the most beautiful cakes and tray bakes but also a surprisingly large selection of sandwiches/toasties/paninis all at very reasonable prices. I chose soup and half toastie for £7 and portions were generous. There is a bright spacious seating area but no dogs. However the super friendly, helpful staff quickly provided a chair and table outside and there is a park adjacent with benches and they do a takeaway service. Only open Thu-Sat 10am-4pm. Good place to stop after walk at Almondell

Super friendly staff and great coffee, but the star of the show has to be the cakes I confess, I was fond of a cheesecake before I visited, but now I'm well and truly a fan Well worth a visit

What a fabulous party on Sunday 23 January at Abbey J Cakes. The food was delightful - dainty, tasty and beautifully presented. The owners were lovely, and nothing was too much trouble. I know that the birthday girl was absolutely thrilled with everything. I can't wait to return.

This is the nicest, cleanest cafe I have visited. The staff were very friendly and obviously proud to work there. All the food is made on the premises which are spotless. I'm not a lover of cakes but the cheesecakes were irresistable and delicious. Definitely worth a visit.

A gem of a place well worth a visit. Super child-friendly, spotlessly clean and amazing homemade cakes. Loads of room for larger parties. Disabled-friendly access and amenities. Relaxed and friendly. You can get a lovely selection of hot and cold food too, I love the soup.

Difficult to choose from the great range of cheesecakes (the mint chocolate one was delicious). Tray-bakes are also available. A hidden gem in Mid Calder!

The cheesecakes are to die for. Also has decadent cheesecake shakes on offer. Has great amenities including a play area for the little ones. I love that they have different cheesecakes on offer at any one time. A step above the usual kid friendly cafe offering.

Cheesecake to die for and the paninis are great too! It's tucked away behind to the North of Bank St. beside the Bowling Club but well worth the effort to find it.

First of all, I do not like cheesecake, but my boyfriend does. There seems to be a serious lack of independent cake and coffee shops in the ‘new town’ of Livingston and so we were delighted to find Abby J Cakes after googling for independent coffee shops. Well, after visiting Abby J’s it would seem that my dislike of cheesecake was due to only ever having had poorly made, shop-bought cheesecake! We requested a Caramac cheesecake for the weekend of our visit & when we visited the owner had added it to the menu for us - that’s some excellent customer service! The Caramac cheesecake was the best we’d ever tasted and the coffee was delicious - according to my boyfriend “the best coffee we’d had in a long time”. It’s so hard to find decent coffee in the UK! The old school building which houses Abby J’s has been renovated to a really high standard and the cafe is lovely and airy. The only criticism we would have is that when we visited at 2.30pm on a Sunday afternoon, the staff were preparing to close early due to a lack of customers that day. We were seated, but the chairs were turned up on all of the other tables & it’s not nice to sit and eat in a coffee shop where you feel like a) it’s about to close or b) like staff are waiting for you to leave - this is not to say that the staff weren’t friendly, they were. I think when you are a new business, you can’t afford to just randomly close early as you risk losing new and repeat customers who turn up to find you closed. It might also be worth putting a sandwich board out on the main road to advertise the business - people driving through won’t know it exists and not being from Mid Calder, we found it hard to locate too. The cheesecake here is too good not to pull in passing trade to try it. That said, we will definitely be coming back for some cheesecake and would recommend anyone in the Livingston area to give it a try (they also offer items such as panini, salads etc). It would be nice to see this fledgling business flourish.

A warm welcome on a very wet afternoon! Bright and clean with good selection staples and treats to choose from. Had to drag daughter away from cute play area. Loads of consideration put into this new venture. We’ll be back! 💕

I think it's very overpriced, £5 for a bacon ciabatta roll which only had 2 slices of bacon was extremely disappointing
