We came her for Gluten Free Fish and Chips and were NOT disappointed. Gorgeous Gf fish (and specified Gf vinegar) a fabulous ordinary fish and chips and then 3 slice haggis supper! Local haggis was the best I've had. Cannot recommend highly enough. Worth a trip to sit in the shadow of the ruined Jedburgh Abbey on a quiet side street for fabulous fish and chips! We'll be back!

Fish was very fresh and well cooked - delicious. Chips and gravy were also very good, would recommend if you are around the area.

Hier kann man schnell, gut und preiswert essen. Der Fisch war bei zwei Besuchen immer super, die Chips hätten etwas knuspriger sein können, die Curry-Sauce war spitze, mit einer kleinen scharfen Spitze. Komme gerne wieder.

Avoid! I’ve been looking forward to trying the fish and chips here l since go down A68 frequently. Stopped last Friday, but fish wasn’t fresh, it was over cooked and tasted odd, chips were dry and old. No one in on a Friday night should have given me the clue, and it was produced too quickly! Will revert to the very good ones in Lauder or Pathhead!

Without doubt the worst pizzas I’ve ever had. Sat for 30 minutes for them (no problem with that) but when I checked on them the lady said they’d had trouble with one and needed to recook. She did in fairness give a little money back to us for such a long wait. Got home - pizzas all burnt. Absolutely incapable of consumption. Had to throw them out. No good. They must have known.

We ordered three fish and chips and two kids fish and chips. All made to order whilst we waited. Decent portions and good quality fish and chips. We all enjoyed them very much. Staff were friendly.

Fabulous fish and chips and are in regularly. Called in today (12th November) at 2.30pm only to find you were shut. Very disappointed. You need to keep your opening hours up to date on the Web.

Visited here for a chippy tea and was not disappointed. We all ordered fish and chips which was more like whale and chips and tested lovely. We phoned our order through and it only took 10 minutes to sort. 4 members of staff so no waiting around and lots of customers in and out whilst I was there. Fish tasted delicious and was devoured by all.

Excellent fish and chips with mushy peas! Was a takeaway cos I couldn’t be bothered cooking after a long day! Very pleasant service from the staff too. I’ll be back. Definitely recommend.

Horrible staff, zero customer service skills, faces like slapped bottoms, was made to feel rather awkward when choosing what I would like, hands on waist, tapping foot, rolling eyes.....I mean is your job not to serve people fried food, there was no que or no one waiting, I’m unsure why we received such a cold response, I think the ladies face may crack if she smiled. Ended up saying I needed to collect money from the car and left as I honestly did not think they deserved any form of service....or even a job to be honest. Shame as the food looked ok. A lovely local man spoke to me outside and explained the women who work there are always exceptionally rude (he used words unable to type but he captured their personality perfectly) but they have no option as the only chippy in the town. Would sooner go hungry than give them my money....shame for them as they lost out on a order for 4 full hungry car loads.

We live in St Boswells but travel to Jed to go to the Abbey chippy, chips lovely and fish always fresh batter just right. Lovely curry sauce and mushy peas..very good takeaway!

Absolutely disgusting food and service staff look depressed and clearly don’t care it’s cash only and they don’t like complaints it’s the only take away in town so clearly standards don’t matter -how are you still open - you smell of cooking fat hours after you have visited they use beef dripping so vegetarians look out as this is not advertised

We went to Abbey after visiting the Abbey, ours was cooked to order and was very good, highly recommended, as said on another review the forks very very poor, but don't let that put you off, you have fingers, its a cash only place.

Wie waren schon oft hier und kommen immer gerne wieder. Die Fish & Chips sind sehr lecker und ein Stop hier inzwischen für zum Ritual geworden, wenn wir auf dem Weg in den schottischen Norden sind. Called in for fish & chips on Friday evening and were completely blown away. I commented on the quality of the carton that they served their food in, the fish was in a separate compartment to the chips which meant that it didn't stick to the chips when the carton was opened. Great portions of food for the price paid, we will definitely look to call again in the future.

Chips looked like they had not even seen the frying pan. The fish was decent but definitely not outstanding. Basically the entire meal was soaked in fat. I wouldn’t recommend this place.

We get a takeaway a couple of times a month and it is always good from “Ralph’s” which is what the locals call the Abbey Takeaway. We have tried lots of other chippies and this has definitely been the best.

Popped here for a quick bite on a golf trip, I had the Smokey & Chips and my dad and a pal both had the fish supper, we all enjoyed the food.

I always call in here if I am travelling back from Scotland on the A68. Really good chips, best battered pizza, good service, reasonably priced. Can't fault it. Never had a bad meal there yet and it lovely as you can sit outside on a good day and look over at the Abbey. Defiantly worth stopping for.

We have been to this take away many times in the past but I don't know what as happened to it but we had fish and chips, the chips were dry and tasteless, the fish was well all i can say is it wasn't nice at all, batter so thin and again tasteless. Won't be going again

Only had chips for the kids, but on nicking a couple they were quite tasty and plenty of them . The kids thoroughly enjoyed them.

Tried this place after a trip to Jedburgh to try out the "new jed chippy" but that was shut. Not to my taste, fish very thin and a creamy colour, batter still slimy where it touched the fish, chips very pale and hard. Tremendous amount of grease left in bottom of tray when finished. I wont be back.

Well adverrtised, needs to be as the only one in town. Quick service, only Haddock on the menu, backed up by the usual burgers and pies.A little competition might bring their prices down. Otherwise very good. Seating outside only on the benches, so cannot be really classed as a restaurant.AS per tick the boxes below. But the lineage / title does say 'takeaway'.

Failing going to Whitby, I reckon this is as good as it gets for fish and chips. If anyone says anything different it’s probably because they are having a bad day.Going from Derbyshire to Edinburgh I always stop off here. It’s consistent. This time, realising we were running out of time before closing we phoned ahead and placed the order. The owner kept the shop open for us and had them ready when we arrived (just being finished off). I spoke to the owner and found out his secrets; what the fish are cooked in and where the fish are landed. I’m sworn to secrecy so I can’t pass it on, however, after many years of working in the fish industry, I approve of both sources and techniques. Please don’t ever close.

Having read reviews of this establishment that were less than complimentary, we went to see for ourselves.The fish and chips were of the first order, as good as any in the Borders.The staff, were very obliging, few in number but pleasant and competent. You cannot expect the staff to fawn over you like you were the most important customer in the world when you have a queue of hungry customers out the door and down the street. Give the staff credit, they knew their jobs and most of the customers by sight and name. Well done.

My friend and I stopped off at Jedburgh on our way home and could smell the fish and chips from the car park at the bus station!!! So we wandered round. We were served by a lovely lady and the gentleman there was doing the frying. I ordered fish and chips and as it is all cooked fresh we sat down to wait. After about 10 minutes the man called me over to collect my order. A group of loud, teenage boys had come in and were milling around behind me talking loudly. The man asked me if I wanted salt and vinegar and I answered yes. He then snapped rudely at me asking me again did I want salt and vinegar. I replied to him that I had already answered. I then ordered some tartare sauce which was given to me by the lady serving. We sat outside on a breezy sunny evening and enjoyed our well cooked fish and chips. The tartare sauce was to die for. The menu board said it was homemade which I can believe, it was the best tartare sauce I’ve ever had. I almost went in to ask their recipe! I’ve given this place 4 stars the welcome from the lady was lovely and the food was amazing but a message to the man frying who served me, if you want return custom it pays not to be rude or shout at customers.

This mom and pop fish and chip shop was recommended to us by the owners of the Hundalee House. It was easy to find and an excellent choice! We have been traveling England for a week trying out a few of the fish and chip shops. This was our first stop in Scotland. This has been our favorite thus far. The owners were great to talk to and helpful with our traveling questions. The shop was nice and clean, well kept. They gave us plenty of food for a great price. The fish batter and vinegar had a great flavor! If we come again we will go there again. Recommended to anyone traveling through. Excellent!

Absolutely terrible service, the miserable old trout behind the counter and the 'boss' both have typically dour personality and they've never even heard of manners! I thought it was maybe because we were English tourists passing through, but when a little old lady who was clearly a local (and known to the staff by name!) she was met with the same frosty response so clearly that's just 'their way'!They do deep fried pizza - which is truly disgusting! Burnt pizza topping on a frozen pizza based that has soaked up the cheap oil. They merrily stab holes in the top of the polystyrene boxes that the food is served in, which makes no difference!All in all it was a very unpleasant experiences and one which I will not be repeating ever again!

People working here especially the mature gent, need to get a job where they don't have contact with the public, Rude, obnoxious is being pleasant to them. Absolutely shocking customer service. I wouldn't encourage this behaviour. No please, thank-yous or anything friendly !!!!!!

So many places don't do or get breadcrumb fried fish wrong. Abbey takeaway got it just right, I will certainly visit again.

Stopped here travelling south which was a big mistake. Its was truly awful.Tasted like cheap oil, out of date. The fish under cooked and the chips had a really strange taste. Not sure how they managed that. Never had chips from a chip shop that were so bad.Sadly it landed in the bin practically untouched. Sadly cannot recommend.

Clean crispy batter and the fish lightly cooked. Just perfect. Chips were good too. Just remember your cash... No cards accepted.

We have travelled all over the UK and NZ and had fish and chips. The fish here was tasteless and about 1/2 the size of any other fish that we have had at other takeaways.

Arrived late and hungry on St Cuthberts Way walk from Melrose. This hit the spot perfectly. Delicious haddock and chips, friendly staff and locals to chat to.

Ok ... now...Question 1. has anyone ever heard of something called "King Ribs"? Well...they aren't actually ribs at all they're battered, deep fried and burnt around the edges (not even our dog ate them)Question 2. Does anyone like there fish and chips cooked in cheap oil? (I.e like you may find on Blackpool or Bognor Regis Seafront?) Question 3. Does anyone like their fish and chips served in polystyrene containers so that when you get it home it's all soggy and it's hard to tell where the fish ends and the chips begin?Question 4. Has anyone ever seen the old Nestle Dimebar advert with Harry Enfield and co? (Check it out on YouTube)Seriously, I don't like being negative, we were looking for a good fish and chip shop in Scottish Borders and we're now left praying that this is not the ultimate measure of Scottish Fish and chips. Angry is not a severe enough word we would use to describe how we are feeling right now. Cannot NOT recommend this place enough...unless you are going to strangle your family as a result of absolute starvation then I would strongly advise you to avoid this place like the bubonic plague!

Lots of places to eat in Jedburgh, but not all of them dog-friendly and those that were had no space, so take away it was. The food was good and plentiful, and well-priced. As it was a fine evening, we got to use the tables outside.

We were travelling back from Hexham Races on Sunday and stopped here for our tea. My husband and I both had a fish supper and it was brilliant :) freshly cooked fish and the chips were perfect - sat outside in the sunshine with views of the Abbey - perfect . Highly recommend

Dreadful food, horrendous customer service.Garlic mayo so out of date it had the consistancy of pease pudding, and was yellow. When asking why, they said it was the type of mayo used. Chips were so under cooked they were nearly white....and drenched in grease. Awful.

Awful. Greasy, undercooked chips and the garlic mayo had the consistency of butter (so greasy even the sauce wouldn't stick to the chips).Never have I felt the need to complain at a restaurant/takeaway but for this it was necessary. Even when complaining the customer service was abysmal; with poor excuses rather than looking to deal with the complaint.The food went in the bin it was that bad. Certainly won't be visiting again!

There is a short wait as it is cooked to order, but well worth the wait, piping hot and cooked to perfection, we will visit again when in the area

Suchten Fish & Chips und haben sie gefunden. Vor allem der Fish war grandios. Als takeaway zu empfehlen! Und dann an den Fluss Nähe der Abbey gehen und dort mit view essen. Sehr schön!

We were traveling home from Newcastle to Dunfermline Came across this great place after speaking to the owner he was explaining where all his produce came from Proper black pudding/ haggis white etc..All butchers made Also where his fresh fish was fromFood excellent We had 3 fish n chips1 white pudding n. Always stop at the Abbey Takeaway as passing by would mean missing out on the finest white puddin' supper in the Borders. Ralf and his staff are always on form and have a huge selection for all tastes, try the pizza topped with haggis and cheese, seating outside with views of Jedburgh Abbey to contemplate whilst enjoying such exquisite cuisine.

Some of the best fish and chips you can get in Scotland. It's always our first stop in Scotland when coming there for holiday.

Very tight with portions, staff seem like they can't be bothered to give you the time of day - too busy whispering between themselves. Which makes you feel rather uncomfortable. Twice we have tried this place and twice we've been left disappointed. Save your money!!

No teníamos planeado quedarnos a comer, pero entramos y nos decidimos a probar. Bien precio. El pescado muy muy bueno, los hugies también. Las patatas fritas no tanto. Aún así, para ser nuestro primer contacto gastronómico en Escocia: puso el listón muy alto para el resto de lugares.

We popped in to this shop having been rudely ignored by the establishment next door to it. I'm not a batter lover so asked for a very lightly battered fish . smashing lunch and probably half the price of the pub next door, excellent service gorgeous food.

I live locally and have never had a bad meal, no matter what I choose. The shop is fairly small but has tables outside, which are great for using on a nice day, opposite the historic Jedburgh Abbey for a view. Friendly staff and good food and prices reasonable.

After a very long drive from the south we were thrilled to spot this wonderful little takeaway. Two haggis suppers and a cheeseburger please!The haggis is from a local butcher and delicious, with generous portions. Well worth stopping for tea. My daughter was perplexed by her cheese burger which came without a bun and in batter?? Well her verdict is yummy especially when the cheese oozes from the middle of the burger. Happy girl!

Popped in for some chips - which were yummy and worth a return trip, however the lady serving needs to find her manners and customer service skills. On entering the shop a gentleman was at the counter he then headed to the door, i thought the lady was looking at him (i thought he was checking with people outside their order) i then realised the lady serving was starring at me waiting for my order, shame she couldn't ask. I placed my order, whilst waiting for the order the lady came from behind counter to a table with a family eating their food, leant over them with no 'excuse me' or 'could you pass me' for a door wedge. She then adked a gentlman to move so she could wedge the door open - just missing a gentlemans knee who was sat at the table. She then proceeded to head back behind counter pushing past the gentleman who had just moved for her. Once again no excuse me and the gentleman stumbled back over being caught by a customer. And not a single apology uttered!! To say i was shocked by this rudeness is an understatement!

We were lucky, it was raining but there was just enough space for us to sit down inside. Very little wait even for cooked fish. It was very busy with tourists and locals.

On a day trip to Jedburgh it seemed that most eating places were crammed full of coach parties at lunch time so we decided to have fish and chips from the Abbey takeaway. The fish was absolutely delicious, perfectly cooked to order with a thin crispy batter and not at all greasy. The accompanying portion of chips was generous and similarly excellent. Heartily recommended.
