A Peculiar Tea in Belfast

What a fantastic experience with the best tasting afternoon tea I've tried to date. Not only does it look good but the flavours are out of this world. Its a shame its closing but I'm looking forward to trying the new restaurant.

My friend and I flew up from London for the day with high expectations of having an amazing afternoon tea and we weren’t disappointed! The afternoon tea definitely had a “wow” factor and every item on the menu was a taste sensation! The interior was decorated in a quirky but beautiful way in accordance with the theme. The wait staff were friendly and personable and the price was unbelievably cheap compared to less tasty and quirky afternoon teas that I’ve had in London! I’m disappointed that the restaurant will soon be closing as I would definitely have made a return visit!

Food was lovely but service was awful, waited an hour between first and second courses, we had to complain to get tea and second course. Dishes were not all cleared away

I had made a booking months ago for my partner (her birthday) and I after confirming that the last week of the menu caters to Vegans/Vegetarians and emailing to confirm before making a reservation. Fast forward to a week before the reservation and I am told that they have decided to no longer offer vegan options and would vegetarian be okay. I'm sure the food would have been lovely however as they have decided to no longer offer vegan options (even if it was just on the last week of the menu and guests making a reservation had confirmed MONTHS in advance that this would be the case) I cannot recommend A Peculiar Tea. Such a backwards decision in 2024. Shame.

I had heard of A peculiar tea before from friends and I wanted to experience it myself .. You are incredible.. had one of the best experiences there . The theme for our dinner was Harry Potter .. and was it creative ? … 5 for that !! Food was not only creative but it was delicious … Service staff were very attentive . The tasting menu for the price was absolutely worth it .. thanks for making our dinner special !

Went for afternoon tea, the food was presented lovely. However the service wasn’t what I expected. We waited over 1hour for our sweet course after having the savoury. Our booking was for 14.15. We didn’t receive our sweet selection to approximately 16:00. Staff were friendly, and we got additional tea/coffee upon request. However no one came to check on how our meal was or check if we had enough tea/coffee. Tea and coffee took a while to come and when the coffee came it was lukewarm. Pleasant setting and well presented food. Staff were accommodating when we required anything.

Went here for afternoon tea. Located near Queens so very handy. Quirky treats and quirky decor, all themed of Alice in Wonderland. Staff very very attentive. We all enjoyed our visit.

I absolutely loved this place, from the moment we arrived till we left we were treated like we were the only ones in the restaurant, the food was absolutely delicious, we have booked again for afternoon tea in a few weeks time. I would highly recommend.

Terrific as always. I treated my daughter and daughter in laws to afternoon tea here yesterday ( one daughter in law traveled all the way from Wicklow for the experience) ………..what can I say other than terrific. Absolutely everything was first class , from front of house and waiters but especially the exceptional food . Congratulations Gemma and team ….. you are all amazing. I had an absolutely wonderful afternoon………. And will definitely be back

Amazing through and through! The food was fabulous on the tasting menu, paired with with the recommended wine.. outstanding! So creative and I love the theme ideas! We have just come home from the Alice in wonderland evening, and we will certainly be back to try the others… hoping a Harry Potter theme will be back soon! Atmosphere would have been fabulous, just a little bit of a rowdy table near us, not a big deal really and certainly not the restaurants fault but shouting to speak to my partner was a little irritating 😂 Staff were more than attentive and extremely on point! Paid almost for a voucher for my son and his girlfriend to have pairings dinner. When they booked a date and had dinner they were asked to pay more. Embarrassing!

I have never tasted such high quality food until dining with A Peculiar Tea. I have experienced both afternoon tea and their tasting menus for dinner and just 3 nights ago, the first dinner course gave me actual goosebumps, how can food give you goosebumps? Their cocktails are full of flavour with the perfect amount of alcohol. Their food presentation is so carefully thought through and the taste of every dish is of pure quality. An absolute must visit for any special occasion or if you're simply a foodie, don't hesitate, just get booked in.

My daughter and i had had our first visit to this fab little place today and it won't be long until we're back. Everything was perfect, the most friendly staff and the food was delicious, the best afternoon tea we've had.

Had an amazing time here, the food and decor are outstanding. The staff are so friendly. I took 1 star off because there were only 3 of us and they charged a £15 service charge. We would have tipped anyway but think £15 is a bit much when you're already paying £120 for afternoon tea ( which was just 1 tray set down between 3 of us so not a lot of service involved to justify the fee). Again, really disappointed I had to mention this as everything else was perfect.

My word what an experience! I must say it was definitely on my top 3 best meals I have ever had. As a Harry Potter fan the meal and the atmosphere only made the whole thing so much more special. The starters burst into action with their amazing flavours, specially the mackerel pate accompanied with a lovely homemade cone and a lovely sitrus yuzu. Next came a cheeky side of lovely chewy sweet bread with a creamy umami butter. So good we ate it before the next course came, which was not our best move due to the lovely sauce that came with the next dish, which was a lovely piece of white delicate Halibut. For the main the heft hunk of meat, a sugar cured pork chop was next. It was amazing, juicy, sweet and delightful. My partner couldn’t finish hers just showing how big it was, but for me it only meant more meat for me. The best part was the bones left from the pork chop that I later gave to my dogs, who as I did delighted in the amazing flavours of the pork. Finally, came the dessert, sweet and light. The maple and tahini snitch was outstanding. Overall, the experience, the meal and the service were top notch. Totally recommend a visit. I will be returning for any other themes that may happen in the future.

Best food experience in Belfast! The Harry Potter theme peaked expectations, the efforts the staff go through in the menu, atmosphere and theme is exceptional!

We came here during our stay in Belfast for my partner's 30th Birthday. The staff were super welcoming and friendly from the moment we got there. The experience itself is amazing. The level of detail they put into the decorations for their themed events was truly amazing. The staff took their time explaining each of the dishes and made sure you're well looked after. A truly memorable experience and we will definitely go back to in the future.

Simply Wow! Best afternoon tea and I've been to The Plaza in NYC and The Ritz in London and multiple 5 stars here in Northern Ireland and none of them come close to a Peculiar Tea. Incredible food, fabulous staff and unique atmosphere. This place deserves a Mitchelin star.⭐ Definitely will be back!

We went for the Willy Wonka Afternoon tea in June and I was dying to come back ever since. Yesterday we tried the Harry Potter afternoon tea and it didn’t disappoint. Fantastic selection of savouries (the sausage roll was 🤤) along with a plentiful selection of sweets all of which are inspired by the story of Harry Potter (treacle tart was my favourite) Lots of Harry Potter themes throughout the restaurant which is ideal for any HP fan or anyone who loves Afternoon tea. Finally staff are so friendly, attentive and welcoming. I brought my baby yesterday and staff made me feel so relaxed and well looked after. We have booked for May and I honestly can’t wait, I can’t praise this place enough, if you haven’t been, you need to go! Thanks again!!

First time here for Mother’s Day and it was a brilliant experience. Great service, incredibly friendly staff and great food. Absolutely loved the decor throughout for the Harry Potter theme! Such thought and care given to every detail. Can’t wait to try out future themes.

I could not wait to go and found it so so disappointing. Thought there would be more of a vibe, nothing really peculiar about anything, other than corn beef sandwiches and black pudding sausage roll, scones could have been smaller. Not my favourite food at all. For £40 you would thing there would be more use of the Harry Potter theme. Waiters dressed to the theme, broomsticks etc. The great thing was the staff, amazing and plenty of them, but wish maybe we didn’t sit beside the kitchen door.

A weird experience for afternoon tea? Harry Potter desserts that were full of food colouring and overly sweet. The savoury food was lovely. When I booked nowhere did it say it was Harry Potter Themed. It says Themed, maybe I was naive thinking it was going to themed around something delicious not Hogwarts!!! Bright blue desserts and the brightest red chewiest macaron that was so full of colouring one bite turned our teeth red! The Harry Potter Theme felt childlike, we were expecting more. The guy who was the waiter was lovely, he was worth a mention.

My husband booked the afternoon tea for my birthday. It was Harry Potter themed although he didn’t know that at the time of booking. We had the vegetarian option and the food was very good. Service was sadly patchy despite lovely servers. We waited for ages to have plates cleared and to pay our bill.

First time at this restaurant. My son had been a few times and always rated it but was really impressed with The boy who lived and advised us to give it a go. He wasn't wrong. Absolutely great meal and very pleasant service. Will be on the list for future outings.

Visited A Peculiar Tea a few days ago and I must say it did not disappoint. Picked the Harry Potter themed afternoon tea as we are such big fans! The decor and menu were so perfectly thought out. A feast for the eyes as well as the stomach! Food was delicious, cocktails were tasty and super funky and staff were so pleasant and helpful. Would totally recommend and will definitely be back!

Had an amazing time here for my birthday. It was a Harry Potter theme and the food was great definitely Michelin Star worthy. The staff were lovely and very attentive. Would like to mention Andrew his service was top class. I've already booked in again for May for my partners bday as we both loved it so much. Would 100% recommend!!

I purchased 2 Afternoon tea takeaway boxes as a treat for a family member coping with cancer. Great selection of items all very well displayed. We enjoyed trying to work out what each one was made of and were disappointed that there wasn't a note giving the details. Some of the contents lacked flavour - quite bland which was also disappointing.

We just had their Harry Potter afternoon tea. What a lovely afternoon eating delicious food. The whole restaurant is steeped in Harry Potter memorabilia, such attention to detail. The food and cocktails were very good m, especially the panna cotta. We will definitely be back to try onw if their other themes.

Genuinely one of the best nights out for a long time. The food and drink was amazing. The accompanying wines were excellent and to be honest the second course was out of this world.

Sad to say we had an awful experience here recently. It was my first time here and after read the reviews, I was excited to say the least. Having waited 15 mins for our prebooked table we finally got seated for our party of 11 (setting for 10). Then we had to watch 3 parties of 2 seated (and booked for 15 mins after us because we got chatting to them all whilst standing in the hall) and served after we were seated. 45 mins after our booked time I had to ask the staff when the food was coming because we were all starving. Clearly understaffed (no fault of theirs), poor scheduling, food minimal, one child got 2 extra finger sandwiches at an extra charge of £8 , no butter dietary requirement for 1 person was met with no butter for the entire group, over charged and the whole experience was sub power. The experience for a smaller party may be better but after this experience, I won't be back nor recommending to friends and family.

Had an amazing morning for my first visit to A Peculiar Tea. I cannot rate this place highly enough. All members of staff were so friendly and incredibly helpful. The staff even managed to arrange a separate selection of savoury treats for my mum who does not like cheese. The care and detail in all aspects of this establishment were thought about. The attention to detail in the decor, menu and service was truthfully outstanding. I will definitely be back again and recommending to everyone I know. Thank you for making my mum’s 60th birthday treat so fantastic!

Ordered afternoon tea for takeaway, for Valentine’s Day. Firstly, I ordered it and forgot to select the veg option. When I realised, I tried to call on the Sun to change but they close Sun, Mon and Tue. Sent an email on Sunday evening in the hope it would be picked up on the Wednesday morning which was the day I was due to pick it up. Lo and behold, it was and the change was made no problem. Called and collected it as arranged. It came in a beautiful presentation box/sleeve kind of thing that just lifted off to reveal the gorgeous contents in a little takeaway afternoon tea rack. Everything looked amazing and the flavours were fab! Honestly, it was well worth the money. The cream for the scones came in a little pot like the jam. There were two suki tea bags on top to make tea. My 14 year old son shared it with us and it was enough for all three of us. An absolute delight and would do it again! Thanks so much.

Unbelievable experience, the team are fantastic, so attentive, knowledgeable , the food is fantastic. Highly recommend, the whole experience was fantastic, we had booked this for a meal on my birthday, from stepping in the restaurant until we left we just were blown away from the experience.. the theme was Harry Potter and it felt liked you walked into Harry Potter film, they had carried the theme with decor in the restaurant. We had the taster wine alongside the food and the team’s knowledge of the wine was impressive, the wine was fantastic. Highly recommend, can’t wait to come back to try another theme :)

Went here with family(ten adults one child),the experience was not as expected,the afternoon tea was mediocre at best,the staff though very friendly and pleasant were far from attentive,the table was set wrong so one of our party was stuck on the end of an already cramped table ,more suited to a party of 5 to eight people for comfort,one of our party ask for sandwiches with no butter so none of us got butter,for £47.00 we each got two finger sandwiches one bit size chicken wrap a slice of sausage roll and a egg cup size of soup,to be fair the deserts were nice enough and a cocktail which was just ok,we had to go up several times to order our own drinks we had to ask for sugar for our tea and salt for the table to add some flavour to the egg sandwich,when the bill arrived we were charged over £50.00 service charge,all in all I feel peculiar tea's afternoon tea is over rated over price and under delvered

Knowledgeable staff, excellent service, but more importantly, creative, inventive vegetarian options. The cocktails are a luxurious touch, so definitely have one (mocktails too!). It's so nice to have a high tea that delivers on every level. A few of Belfast's bigger establishments could learn a thing a two from this Chef. Huge thanks , Ruthie

This is an absolute gem of a restaurant, fine dining with a hint of humour. All four courses were brilliant, full of flavour, interesting on both the eye and in the mouth. Service was great and the wine pairing added an extra layer of joy to the meal

Visited for the Harry Potter themed menu and it was ok. The first 2 courses were lovely (halibut was incredible), the 3rd course was pretty abysmal and deserts were OK. Its pretty pricey so I expected a bit better if I'm honest. The roasties were missing on course 3 so it was basically just a huge chunk of meat and I'm not really into that. When I queried the absence of roasties I got told they were on the way and then told they were only on the veggie menu (quite clearly stated on the regular menu) Obviously something had went wrong in the kitchen and we were being fobbed off. Quite disappointing and I noticed lots of people left the main half eaten. Service was very friendly and the decor is exceptional.

Small intimate restaurant with seating on two floors. This was a sort of tasting menu but themed around Harry Potter. (The themes change even months). The four courses allowed the chefs to exhibit their expertise and 3 of the courses were excellent. The main cour, slides pork loin, was not quite up to the intricacies of the other courses.

Aft er many a let down I am so glad this restaurant tonight ticked all the boxes . Amazing staff...gorgeous food ...placed timely and actually well priced good wine . Everything explained well and just delightful. No pretentious Ness... Just wonderful. Clean toilets ...great gimmicks ...loved it ... Long may you continue in the format you have chosen ...

Afternoon Tea wow wow wow. I took my mother who is of pension age. The new them was amazing. Grainne served us and she made us feel so welcome. She talked us through the savoury course, explaining everything to do with the theme," very knowledgeable". Then we had the 2nd course an array of beautiful tasty delights. This place has got better every time I've been. I think at this level of restaurant criticisms are more a matter of personal taste than genuine grievances. The sommelier puts together outstanding pairings and is great craic. The waiting staff are attentive without being intrusive. And the food is consistently interesting and well executed. Definitely worth a visit if you enjoy fine dining.

Highly recommend. Went for the first time with my sister and friend to start a weekend back ‘home’. Oh my goodness it was just perfect from start to finish. Staff were so welcoming on arrival. Where to start on the food a fabulous selection all themed and were delicious. Beautifully served…we didn’t want it to end. I’ve been lucky to have afternoon teas all over the world and believe me this is up there with the best.

This is my 3rd visit and it didn't disappoint. The food was delicious and I tried jackfruit for the first time. My favourite item for savoury was the sausage roll and in the sweet layer was the toffee apple flavour treat. Gemma is really inventive when it comes to flavours. I have recommended the afternoon tea experience to my family and friends and will be back.

Excellent food as always, though our earlier visit was even more spectacular. Service was great, although we had enquired about a mocktail but the waiter forgot to get back to us. But it's a superb place to go for eccentric and excellent afternoon tea. Thoroughly recommend it.

This is no ordinary afternoon tea. We have just had ours, with an interesting Halloween concept. It was beautifully presented, a collaboration of tasty savoury delights with a stunning mixture of themed sweet delicacies.it is appropriate to say this was an absolute ‘treat’ and we can’t recommend it enough. Absolutely the best high tea IN THE WORLD!! I came alllll the way from Montreal for my cousin's wedding and I must say, this is such a highlight of my trip. The staff were so friendly, efficient and allowed us to be our nerdy selves. The nightmare before Christmas theme was amazing and so well done. The staff were even knowledgeable of the film. If youre in belfast - DO NOT MISS OUT! Next time I'm back I'll be stopping by. Thank you so much to our servers, bartenders, chefs and all the staff that make this place a real jewel of belfast!!

My friend and I had the Grease Themed 7 Course Tasting Menu tonight and I can honestly say that I've never enjoyed a meal so much anywhere else! Every ingredient was fresh and locally sourced from the chicken to the cherry tomatoes and butter from right here in Lisburn! Every course was presented with such precision and care and it was fun! I loved hearing the waiters describe what we were eating, and then getting to experience the perfect bite of food. There wasn't one thing on any plate that was put before me that felt pretentious or there just to fill space and I came away full and happy. A Peculiar Tea is worth absolutely every penny you spend there, the staff are worth their weight in gold and Gemma is a Culinary Genius! Yes. We're already wondering if they'll be open on New Year's Eve so we can try the Afternoon Tea!!!

This place is just the best. My wife and I had the 'Grease' themed tasting menu. Every dish has been well thought out and gives you the opportunity to try things I never have or would even think about having in a restaurant. The staff are a credit to the place, carrying out their work with professionalism but at the same time, happy to have a natter and a bit of criac.

Amazing food lovingly crafted by a genius! The staff at the restaurant help create a warm, relaxed atmosphere but are also highly professional, and knowledgeable on each course and wine. The Grease theme was fabulous. I can’t pick my favourite as each was sublime. I love this place !!

Afternoon Tea! Having heard so much about A Peculiar Tea, we simply had to pay this place a visit! We followed the team on FB and were teased with tempting themes connected to creative food! Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, TV Game Shows to name...

Had Afternoon Tea and as always it was delicious,I don't want to give anything away,but the dippy egg and soldier was sublime.I am Gluten Intolerant and still got a phenomenal scone and sausage roll.Wonderful experience.

We were visiting from England and love ourselves a weird restaurant experience - we came for the 80's Game Shows themed tasting menu and it was amazing. Each course focused on a particular game show, with a fun game to play accompanying the food (which was absolutely amazing and tied into the game show for that course). The staff were excellent - knowledgeable, friendly and cheerful, and they really helped make the evening special. We will definitely be booking more weekends in Belfast specifically to visit A Peculiar Tea again!
