A Passage to India in Ipswich

REPORTED TO FOOD STANDARDS AGENCY - DANGEROUS IF YOU HAVE FOOD ALLERGIES OR DIETARY NEEDS! I called in advance to ask if they cater for vegans. I was assured that my curry would be made vegan and even added it to the notes section of the order to make sure as I have an intolence to dairy having been vegan for three years. My VEGAN curry had PANEER (cheese) in it - I am now dealing with the consequences of my dairy intolerance with an upset stomach and sickness! You'd think that was bad enough, my friend then found MEAT in her VEGETARIAN curry!!!!!! We called right away and spoke to a horrible, unhelpful and rude lady called Mel. She accused us of lying, told us (a vegan and vegetarian) we were the ones who added meat to our curry, that paneer is tofu (when tofu isn't on their menu and it was 100% cheese) and that Indian cheese doesn't contain dairy which was an outright lie and I even had to read the Google definition to her on the phone! She was shouting, made an offensive comment about her own staff, "well he is foreign but he knows what he's doing", lied multiple times about what allergens their food contains and treated us like liars. Reporting to Food Standards Agency immediately and highly insist that all with allergies, dietary requirements or just common sense stay away!!!!!!

Ordered takeaway. Order cancelled for some reason. I thought the idea was : I order food, pay for it, you deliver it. Absolute rubbish.

Awful. Closes early because they have no business even when they bookings. It now seems obvious as to why people do not use this restaurant. Avoid avoid avoid.

Booked a table for 8.30, was 10 minutes late, lights off, knocked on the window for this aggressive woman to start threatening me with calling the police for smashing the window, which obviously we hadn't, really strange cos when I eventually got through to book the table on Thursday night it felt like she was more interested in eating her food, it took me 9 times to get a response !!! Been going there for years, never again, disgusting behaviour!!

This is with out question the very best Indian restaurant in Suffolk. From the minute your are greeted and shown to your table, nothing is ever a problem. The atmosphere is fantastic. The food is the very best. The portion sizes are plentiful. I have eaten there several times and ordered many takeaways over the years. I have NEVER been disappointed. I recently visited last Saturday night with my wife for our wedding anniversary. We had a great time. We were made to feel like we were VIP. I cant wait to go back. THIS IS THE VERY BEST INDIAN RESTAURANT IN SUFFOLK.

Excellent food and service lovely biriyani lamb curry and masala

I am very disappointed with my experience at this establishment. The portion sizes were very small, with minimal meat in most dishes. Additionally, several items were missing from the order and the naan bread was burnt. The food overall lacked flavour and was rather bland.

More salad than meat and no sauce

Have used this restaurant many times over the years but more recently for takeaways.We ordered our usual and were very disappointed. We paid extra to have chicken tikka currys and frankly wasnt worth the money . 8 teaspoon size pieces which were lost in the sauce. Also for a Dhansak and Jalfrezi there was no heat to the sauce. Unfortunately dont think we will order with them again

Very disappointing and will never order again!! The food was very diluted,salty and the meat portions were so little that it looked like someone had eaten it. The food was delivered with the packaging crushed resulting the curry sauce spilt everywhere. Also the naan bread was burnt and tasted stale. To make it worse they didn’t deliver all the items we ordered. If there was a zero star option then i would definitely choose this.

The plain naans were totally burnt. We ordered 8 curries and the meat in the curries were very small. For instance the lamb rogonjosh had about 5 pieces of meat that were 1.5 cm cubed. See pics. In addition the order was missing items. We will never come here again.

Was looking forward to trying here but sadly missing sauces which were paid for, wrong rice sent, food was bland and meat wasn’t very fresh, so really disappointing unfortunately

Had a lovely evening here. Food was really good and the service was excellent.

The vegetarian set menu was missing a samosa and veg saag meal was missing rice and onion bhaji

food was poor quality. portions where small. onion bharjees were under cooked. lamb bhuna was like a chicken curry soup. poppadoms whilst we're free where stale. Will never use this place again. Delivery was ok after time moved a few times

The curry was like water it was so runny I couldn't eat it

Excellent food, Excellent staff, would highly recommend, all food had exceptional flavours. Staff are extremely friendly and attentive.

Channa poori, chicken tikka biriyani, cobra beer was fine.

Had heard great things about this place and we had booked for my mother in laws birthday on a Saturday evening and expected it to be busy. First problem was finding parking as there isn’t any nearby but we overlooked this as it’s normally something that the restaurant has no control over. The decor is quite dark and dated but it is in a listed building but things like dead flowers wilting on the floor and cobwebs isn’t a great look… We ordered drinks and the coke was flat, sent it back and requested lemonade instead but was brought back coke. Had to ask twice for straws… there was only 2 tables in (quite bleak for a Saturday evening) so you would have thought the staff would have been more attentive. The food then came, Dhall had a skin on which was in no way appetising, “king prawns” were tiny and like rubber bullets from being overcooked… and rest of the food was quite bland, we left around 3/4 of all of our food and nothing was asked from the serving staff … Rice seemed microwaved as it was hot in some places and cold in others on the plate Nearly £200 for 4 adults and 2 children with no starters and 1 drink each is quite expensive for the meal we had… The waitress was very polite though… Overall wouldn’t return in a hurry

A fabulous meal once again! Such wonderful tasty food, brilliant atmosphere and vibe and the service is awesome. The wine is good too ;)

Fantastic food and excellent service

Ordered a takeaway. Forgot one of my dishes AGAIN. When I went back to collect they said they didn’t have it in order despite going over my order 4times when ordering. Whilst in the middle of dealing with my complaint, house lady went on to serve two other people, even though she had not finished with myself… madras was missing, they then gave it to me for free but it was more like a vindaloo. Just as well my child wasn’t eating that as it was extremely hot. Appalling customer service.

NEVER ORDER FROM HERE IF YOU WANT YOUR FOOD WITHIN AN HOUR! It’s Sunday the 10th 2024 on Mother’s Day i ordered from here at 5:30pm and Its now 7:11pm and the restaurant will not answer there phone, really bad delivery service and phone service

Brilliant as always. Had a takeaway this time but have been coming to Passage India for many years and have never been disappointed. Cannot fault.

The food was very poor dansak was very runny and 3 pieces of lamb mush barghi was nothing more than half portion onion bargi was dough and flour we have taken pictures to we actually binned the food and went out for dinner instead. On calling the take away the lady on the phone was very rude and unhelpful

Chicken biryani with vegetable curry and a peshwari naan on the side. Lovely food, decent amount of chicken compared to other places. Ordered online to collect, ready in 15 minutes. Very friendly family run restaurant/takeaway.

Decent biriani but not worth £11. The Chicken Tikka Dansak portion was embarrassing. Didn’t even taste like the real thing. Was hoping The Passage was back to where it was two years ago, but clearly not.

Not happy with the food, portions were not good - Ordered half a chicken and got x2 legs! One dish had x2 big boiled potatoes with frozen veg which does not reflect the price at all. Not good dishes, won't order again

Atmosphere was pretty bland. Maybe traditional music would be nice... Booked a table of 12 for 7pm... One waitress. Didn't get our main meals til at least 9pm. Super slow drink service despite all being bottled lager. Drinks super pricey. Portions were overall quite small but acceptable. Food was decent. Based on tonight's performance I will never be coming back to this restaurant. Considering it's long-standing reputation as very good. Tonight's showing was terrible.

Food was delicious was delivered quickly and was fresh and hot. The only thing I would say is the portions are on the smaller side but would definitely order again

Waited over 2 hours for food. Phoned restaurant over 20 times when they finally answered told me to collect as driver hadn’t picked up order. Finally got home with cold food. Food worst Indian food I have ever eaten. Far too much salt. Sloppy, naan undercooked and doughy , saag aloo like sloppy salty mush. Couldn’t eat tikka masala was disgusting. Just about managed to eat half my korma but far too sloppy and salty. Will Never order from here again.

Ordered fir delivery. Waited over 2 hours. Phoned restaurant over 20 times finally got through and was told no drivers available to deliver and could I collect. Tried to cancel order but app said I would still be charged full price. Had no choice but to drive to restaurant and collect. Got home with cold food. Warmed in microwave. Food worst Indian meal I have ever tasted . Couldn’t finish meal too salty . Flavours strange but not nice.

Amazing restaurant with great waitress who was very kind and chatty just what we needed after a long drive down from lincolnshire and hungry bellys the food was lovely and we loved the look of the restaurant they kept it traditional it was beautiful so in all brilliant all around thank you for a lovely curry and lovely evening

So nice relaxed atmosphere and great authentic Indian food. Great selection of dishes and I recommend the fish pakoras!! Just go as this one is not to miss…

Meal delivered not as ordered. I ordered a Makhani, I have eaten in there so know what it’s like. What I got delivered was a Korma, and not a very nice one either, so it went in the bin. Very disappointed, how can you get that wrong?

Both driver and restaurant problems. Food arrived about an hour late, arrived cold as if it had been sitting there for ages , popadoms were stale and gross

Had a Rogan Josh and it looked like water with 2 grisly bits of chicken, absolutely disgusting. Normally this is an excellent Indian but for someone to pass my meal for delivery shows they don’t care

Butter Chicken, Rices, Mixed Grill & Onion Bhajees were cold as well the Bhajees not at all crispy but soggy and full of fat. Very disappointing as I have always used you before. Very poor quality tonight

Generally nice, the peshwari naan had a very strange taste and was like dough. Not much meat in the curries

After getting the suggestion by someone me and my husband bumped into, we turned up without a reservation and was instantly greeted with a smile when apologising that our visit was spontaneous. We were shown to our table and offered some poppadoms and asked what drinks we wanted to start off with straight away. After only a little wait whilst eating and drinking, we were ready to order our mains. We aren't fussy with what we eat and love trying new things so, we told the waitress the flavours we liked, spice tolerance etc and said that we would leave the dishes for her to order for use. Let's say, she didn't disappoint. Would highly recommend for people to visit and experience the lovely, friendly atmosphere and delicious food. X

We had an anniversary meal last night in this lovely restaurant. Although it was a quiet midweek evening it was still a nice atmosphere. Our hostess was friendly & kindly brought up a portion of keema naan for my husband to try. Our meals were delicious with good portion sizes. We had a lovely evening & our hostess even brought us complementary drinks to round off our celebration. We will definitely return & I will certainly recommend it.

Chicken Tika was very over-cooked

The staff were attentive and very generous and really looked after me and my family on my birthday. Food was delicious and came really quickly. Once again, I can only say wonderful things about the waitress and hospitality. Definitely be coming back.

It has always been one of the best Indian restaurants in the County but the cuisine is now even better with a new Indian chef who brings authentic flavours and dishes you won’t find in other restaurants with Bengali chefs. You will be greeted by a new female manager Husnara who will help you choose from the new menu .

Great sauces and flavours for all dishes but hardly any meat at all in any and the vegetable curry had one potato and a few peas that was it so disappointing

Inedible, far far too hot. My order of chicken madras just tasted of chili powder and hotter than some phals I've tasted, shame as this used to be a great restaurant, no poppadoms yet we were given poppadom sauce? Unimpressed to be honest

Ordered via Uber and was utterly disappointed with the food. It tasted good but the portion was minuscule. Had a king prawns makani ( 1 tablespoon of prawns cut in halves)curry which look like a Korma. Lamb meetha tasted good but about a tablespoon of lamb. Containers were huge but just full of sauce. The only good thing about the delivery was that it was extremely quick!!!

Ordered a chicken Makhani and chips but got a chicken Korma and less chips than my sons happy meal.

I've given 4 stars for the quality as the korma was watery but it still had a very yummy flavour. We thoroughly enjoy it. Thank you ❤️

Worst Indian I have had In a long time . Ordered a take away /delivery. I had mixed grill got 3 little pieces of bland chicken and 3 pieces of what I can only assume was supposed to be the lamb . Looked like it had already been chewed on and spat out . The naan was supposed to be included but was missing, The sheek kebab looked anemic and was very bland , the tandoori on the bone was mostly bone . Chicken Kebab rolls not what they used to be from here a few of them was just roll ( no meat in it at all ) maybe this was the naan that was supposed to be with my mixed grill? Chicken tikka bhuna my partner ordered was very bland and not much meat. The free 2/3rds of a poppadom really got me , it seems to me either the driver got hungry or these were left overs from the restaurant? I tried calling the restaurant a few times but they didn't answer. I will Never order from Here again , I don't usually write reviews but maybe i can save someone else the disappointment in the future.

Lovely food, tasted amazing. Really enjoyed it. Got the set meal for 2 and it was great, well worth the money. Ordered the food for a set time and it was on time.

Super delicious, fresh tasting food.

Visited the restaurant for the first time with my husband and experienced the best customer service and the most delicious food. We were visiting Ipswich and someone recommended this restaurant for us to try out. This will be our go to Indian restaurant anytime we visit Ipswich again.

Wonderful staff excellent customer service can’t wait to go back again. Great vegetarian selection. Had a take away this time looking forward to dining in.

Went to a rare meal out with my husband We’ve been here before and always enjoyed it. The restaurant wasn’t at all busy and picked up the later the evening went on. Greeted by a lovely cheerful lady , very friendly and attentive. Ordered starters and main and a couple of bottles of wine Was a lovely evening all the food was extremely nice and we were giving plenty of time to chat and eat Was given a free drink at the end of the evening a lovely touch Definitely be going back

The passage does, really excellent food, The people who own it and run it are really nice people. Nothing is to much for them. Will even prepare food which is not on the menu. Give it a try

One of our orders was different to what we order, portion sizes were small and delivery took almost 2hrs (20mins over the time given on just eat)

Food fantastic, the restaurant didn’t have any delivery drivers on hand & I wasn’t able to go collect so the put food out with a taxi driver at there cost. Great place that goes above & beyond

Wonderful food. Wonderful service. Special appreciation for the lady who waited our table. She came running behind me when i left my phone on the table and walked out. She ran for about 50meters to hand the phone to me. Food was good. Not very Indian but desi style.

There was 20 of us, we had pre booked and given main orders a week in advance and we arrived on time at 6.30 when it was empty, but food took 2 hours to come out! Far too long, delayed our pub crawl. Food OK and priced well but no way makes up for slow service, even getting a bottle beer took an age.

Enjoyed a really lovely evening here. Fantastic choice, tasty food and the most friendly, accommodating, knowledgeable and lovely lady host. The restaurant and atmosphere was lovely and inviting. Will definitely be back again soon.

Food was pre ordered to be delivered at 8.30pm. So we could eat when the children were asleep. It arrived at 7.50pm. By the time we got to sit and eat it at 8.30pm it was cold and greasy.

We returned to this lovely restaurant for the first time since the pandemic. We’re not often in Ipswich but occasionally visit family in the area. The restaurant has not changed and the meal was as delightful as ever. Plenty of choice, including a number of healthier option main courses. Host for the evening was the owner’s daughter. She welcomed us in and looked after us for the evening. The menu is varied, with plenty of choice for those who do and do not like spicy food, for those who do and do not like/eat meat etc. Can’t comment of the overall bill for the five of us, as the tab was picked up by a family member … we were not allowed to see. The menu prices all seemed very reasonable. From the plaque outside, marking the restaurant’s opening, it appears to have been in business for over thirty years - so they are clearly doing something right. Our food was tasty, nicely served and plentiful. We’re glad we returned.
