Zi's Cafe in Cardiff

Stopped for dim sum and was really pleased with the food. Really authentic and great selection. Great news to have something like this available for lunch.

Dim sum has a very traditional and original taste and texture. Atmosphere is excellent and filled with iconic Cantonese songs. Together with the dim sum and music, you can bath in a very relax and enjoyable dinning experience.

All the dim sum are delicious! It is a taste we have in old Hong Kong!Very traditional and the portions are big!The owner and the staff are very nice.They spoke to us in cantonese and it made me feel like home❤️The owner served our dishes and she is very polite and welcoming.She asked us if we like the food and the answer is definitely yes❤️❤️❤️will go again definitely 👍 All the dim sum today was delicious ❤️ I often go for tea in Hong Kong, so today I’m here to try it with my husband! The dim sum is delicious, and the taste is better than what you can eat in Hong Kong teahouses🥹All dim sum are large and filling! When I walked in, the staff were so polite. They asked me in Cantonese what I liked. The boss was a nice person and very polite. He would take the initiative to ask me if I liked the food. In the end, he gave me 2 egg tarts. I’m so happy today❤️I will definitely come again!

This was our first visit to Zi's Cafe. Great selection of dishes to choose from. We had the chicken skewers, chicken and sweet corn soup and spring rolls to start followed by half an aromatic duck with plum sauce and pancakes. The food was freshly prepared and tasted great. The starters were a meal in themselves. After a 10 min rest our mains arrived. The lamb curry, beef and black bean sauce and sweet and sour chicken chop and Singapore rice noodles were full of flavour and beautify cooked. The generous portions left us full of an egg. It's on our list for a definite revisit. Highly recommended.

Disappointing Experience Due to Poor Communication I was really craving dim sum, and there were so many options to choose from. I asked for recommendations, but unfortunately, the staff struggled with English, and I ended up with some rice cake goo dish that I wasn't familiar with. Since I'm not the confrontational type, I didn't go back to complain and only discovered the mix-up when I got home. Now, I'm still hungry and quite disappointed with the whole experience. They really should have English-speaking staff at the front to avoid these situations.

Called 10 mins over delivery time as app showing order delivered. told that driver had 4 orders but was on his way. 20 mins later, still no food. Called again and told they needed to call driver and call me back. 20 minutes later call back received to say the driver had an issue with his car and new driver had picked the food up for delivery. Expressed concerns of it being cold and that fresh food should be cooked before delivery, assured food was fresh and hot. Food was cold!!

Cosy chinese restaurant operate by very friendly malaysian (migrated). Good portion and price to support students.

I recently visited Zi Cafe and had an amazing experience with their dim sum! Every dish was beautifully crafted and absolutely delicious. The shrimp dumplings and siu mai were particularly standout. The atmosphere of the cafe is cozy and inviting, perfect for gatherings with friends or family. The staff were very friendly and made me feel right at home. Overall, Zi Cafe's dim sum left a lasting impression on me, and I highly recommend it to anyone looking for a tasty meal. I can't wait to return!

The tastiest Chinese! Nom nom nom! Will not be disappointed

We ordered a set meal for 3 take out and added a half crispy duck. The half crispy duck tasted fabulous, although would have liked it more crispy. Might have softened in transit. The meal itself was excellent. There wasn’t as much as I might have expected. But it did fill us all up so, I guess, it was a meal for 3 (with lunch tomorrow!). The ribs were big and meaty. The garlic chicken had some real zing to it. The satay beef had some real peppery flavour to it. Very nice. The Ma Po Tofu also had some bite to it. Overall, very satisfied with the food. I would just caution, though. If you don’t like spicy food, don’t order the meal for 3. I can’t really comment on value for money as I can’t directly compare it to what we would get in Canada. At home I would never spend that much on a meal for 3. But I don’t know what the going rate is in the UK. Good quality food though.

Homely, relaxed and friendly atmosphere, feels like being welcomed into someone's home in the best way possible. I've come here a few times with my family so much so it became a little tradition, because it's such a lovely place with amazing food and drinks. It's also reasonably priced, especially for such generous portions.

Staff is lovely. they play Cantonese music, seems like in my country. Food is fantastic. Of course not comparable to the local ones, but compared to the price, it's worth it. The beef satay needs improvement.

Good food. Please give your delivery driver a tip, I asked JustEat to refund a drink but it looks like the restaurant just sent out a driver to give it instead which is a bit mad.

I gotta say, when I order my usual, its always delivered on point and piping hot, I get the general tso chicken with salt and pepper fries, with chilli oil and curry sauce, and I haven't been let down once, they are one of 2 very strong contenders in what I order (I will not name the other place out of courtesy) but Zis cafe are my first go to, I love your service, your warm and enthusiastic approach to my requirements. Just amazing eating experience, and exceptional customer service 👌

Best meal in Cardiff. We booked table of 10 with Zi cafe after reading reviews from Tripadvisor. I’m glad we went. We enjoyed the dinner very much. We asked for less salt and no msg and the food still taste delicious. Very authentic Chinese food with super friendly staffs.

Extremely disappointing rice chips and curry sauce arrived cold half a crispy duck which cost over twenty pound was burnt and inedible. Fried bean curd was disgusting arrived as some slop. I contacted just eat and provided photographic evidence of a burnt duck however they said on this occasion could not support or help reimburse any payment. Can safely say will never order from Zis again nor will we use just eat, appalling quality and service from both!

Staying in the area and saw good reviews. Everything we had was really good and some more unusual choices which was nice. Maybe it's just the area but the prices were 15-20% more than we would pay at home, hence the 4 stars.

Been visiting for years always good

Food was dry and tasteless. Worst fried rice and chow mein I've had, very disappointed after seeing how positive the reviews usually are. Makes me think it must have been reheated food for it to be so dry. I had to add my own seasoning and sauce to make it edible. Did give free prawn crackers which was nice!

Best Chinese Restaurant in Cardiff. Been to Hong Kong, been to China this place ranks equivalent to traditional mega city food outlets. Price is exceptional, and quality is incredible. The more people you go with, the cheaper it turns out and we’ve had a banquet numerous times in big groups. Been here with my girlfriend from Hong Kong, Malaysian and Romania friends, they even said it was the best meal they’ve ever had. Get there ASAP for dim sum, you won’t regret it!

Great food, friendly service in a comfortable environment. My wife is Chinese and I have spent a lot of time in China and I can honestly say the taste is authentic unlike many UK restaurants where food is anglicised. We will definitely come again next time we are in Cardiff.

Ordered takeout last minute 24/2/24,30 min wait,but restaurant food looked smelt delicious,was looking forward to mine Got home,chicken chow mein okay,duck mushrooms and bamboo shoots delicious but not a lot of duck.chicken balls bit chewy,sweet n sour sauce watery and vinegery.Chips went straight into food bin,tasteless rewarmed not nice at all, Bearing in mind didn't mind paying restaurant prices but expected better.quality food.

Came here on a Saturday afternoon with my family. We love dimsum and wanted to compare with Happy Gathering in Canton. Food was decent along with service though portion size for rice noodles with shredded duck was a bit on the small side (shared between 3 people). Not much of an atmosphere (no music) just the noise of other people in the restaurant. Price was ok along with the food (could be better). Highchair was also provided. Overall is just OK, would come again but wouldn’t be my first choice of restaurant.

The food is always 5 star here and the owner is so lovely.

Curry good, rice good, chicken balls batter to thick, sweet and sour sauce to thin and to sour for my taste. Partner said lamb peanut satay was to fatty with little flavour,. Average

The service was good and the venue was cute. You get good portions for the price too. However the food was really disappointing. I had the chefs special. The best way I can describe it is, imagine the white ish sauce from a Chicken pie but remove the taste and add too much garlic. The noodles tasted like nothing as well. I always feel bad giving a bad review however I can't bring myself to lie. I'd definitely give this place a skip or just go for a more traditional dish like fried rice.

The satay sauce for the satay chicken skewers was watery and bland. It tasted like a weak chicken soup with a vague peanut flavouring. The skewers themselves were dry and unpleasant. A dreadful disappointment. The roast duck in plum sauce was better, but for some reason came on top of a load of hot wilted lettuce taking up space in the tray. Very strange. Egg fried rice was fine, but who can mess up rice? Salt and pepper chicken was dry, and the sweet and sour sauce that I got to go with it was a neon red gloopfest. Not at all pleasant. Ribs tasted fine, although the sauce turned into solid jelly after 10 mins of being out on the table. I won't be ordering from this place again.

Food was supposed to be 60-80 mins, was delivered with 35 mins of ordering. It was piping hot and very nice, I would recommend the shredded crispy beef.

Chicken fried rice was pale, and tastless no colour. As for the chicken Zi thing I had was totally inedible.. just swimming in tasteless watery liquid, made the chicken a mush of soggy rubbish.!! Not one piece of that was crispy, or eatable!!! Awful, sorry

We've been to Zi's cafe for a number of years now, and it always delivers. Most recently they've started Cantonese Dim Sum, tasting exactly like the high-end traditional restaurants in Hong Kong! The restaurant owner said they've recruited a senior chef from Hong Kong - no wonder!

Love this place. Been a few tiimes now, but not for a few years and I'm so glad it survived all the lockdowns. Came in without a booking and quite late, but they were happy to accomodate us. I had General Tso's Chicken, which is not that easy to find in the UK - I know it's not exactly authentic Chinese, but I love it, especially when it's cooked as well as this one....real fiery kick, lovely crunchy chicken and a beautiful sweet sticky sauce. All extremely reasonably priced as well.

I just came from there. The food was amazing. The staff very lovely. I even tried one of the coconut tarts -delicious. You would be missing if you don't try it out.

The lamb was so chewy it was inedible. The rice was soggy and lacked flavour, as did the prawn dish. Disappointing as Zi’s came highly recommended.

First time trying this Chinese and we really enjoyed it! Easy to order ahead collect through the website, great value for money and everything we ordered was super yummy. We definitely recommend the pork ribs in honey!

55 mins late. rice was stodgy like pudding. curry sauce was thick enough to slice. chips not fresh dried & out over cooked nit edible.spring rolls hard and Uber cooked. Pork like cardboard & not a nice taste. Vegetarian bean curd was good. sweet & sour sauce was good. noodles were good but overall not a good meal would not order from them again. 50% went in the bin. Over priced and poor quality

This was my first time here. Both food and service were really good. We tried a range of dishes of meat and vegetables and cleared our plates. I would definitely recommend to friends and overall great value for money. I'll be back!

I can't recommend this enough. The salt and pepper wings were as good as I've had, really crispy. The chilli beef was light and full of flavour. The pork dumplings came with a lovely vinegar dipping sauce, and the lamb was cooked to perfection. Also the food came earlier thsm expected ehich was great as we'd ordered really late! I find Chinese takeaway can be a bit hit and miss, but this is one of the best.

My favourite takeaway place. You'd think it's a standard Chinese but no, it's a secret Malaysian place! So the food is more authentic, higher quality, better ingredients and tasty. The price is also excellent value. I'd highly recommend it if you're looking to eat with others at home and need a range of well-priced and speedily prepared food.

As always, a lovely meal. Great quality meal - even though we don't live in the same area as Zi's, it is our go-to for a super tasty Chinese meal. Fully recommend, friendly staff and great portion sizes.

This is usually our favourite takeaway but tonight was disappointing. The beef with dried chillies and the chilli shredded young corn were extremely sweet to the point they were almost inedible. Honestly all the food seemed to have come out of a different kitchen compared to what we usually expect.

After waiting 15 mins to be served, We ordered three dishes. The chef seemed over exuberant with salt. Each dish was very salty. In addition, the General Tso’s chicken dish was just oozing too much soy sauce, that was all you could taste. Spare ribs dish. There weren’t many spare ribs at all. Very limited. Overall disappointing and somewhere that we thought we would try but know we would never return.

Absolutely delicious, we’re not local so I did some Googling to find best Cardiff takeaways and this place was listed- not surprised it was great. Menu was extensive and we tried a few different things and were not disappointed. Best Chinese food I’ve had in yonks, highly recommend.

(Both equally as good) Recently tried a different Chinese just for something new, but never again. Zi’s cafe is the best for me and my girlfriend in Cathays. Been loving their food for 4 years now. 10/10 would recommend.

All the food was very tasty but I felt that the Prawn Chow Mein was lacking in vegetables and not enough prawns

Ordered at 7.30pm and delivery time estimated at 60-70 minutes, still nothing arrived by 10pm. Called and they said it was on its way and shouldn't be longer than half an hour. Now far too late to order anywhere else. Paid £43 for this order. Never again.

Met an old friend. First time trying Japanese (I know ). Tasty vegetarian hot and sour soup- maybe too chilly for me. But lots of flavour, lovely and hot for this cold weather. First time having tofu!! Haha I loved it and completely finished the bowl! Then had deep fried aubergine dish which was amazing. I am so going to try to recreate this at home! With veg fried rice. They had lots of people ordering take away by the looks of it. Saw just eat and deliveroo drivers coming in and out. But apart from us no one else in the restaurant. But sat do see as the food was tasty. But fine for me and my friend to have a good catch up. Service was wonderful, we had jasmine tea, because we were there chatting so long the waitress came and refilled with hot water again - I mean it was just what was needed in the evening on a cold winter's day! I will definitely come again!

Normally the food here is epic, really sad that tonight's was bland and just not up to their normal standard. Gutted.
