Wholesome Junkies in Manchester

MAR 25 Exciting to see the return of Wholesome Junkies! I shared a couple of small plates with a friend: Taiwanese Beefless Rolls and Roasted Squash and Whipped Tofu. The latter? Absolutely incredible. A must-try. * I’ve stopped by Wholesome Junkies for some top vegan desserts: a Biscoff Cake and a Kinder Bueno Brownie. I love the Firefly beverages, also. There’s only a handful of tables, but you can take food away if you wish.

Ermergherd, I FINALLY made it here!!! Droooooling. Bit tricky to find as it's downstairs, behind the direction we walked in, but my friend spotted the sign. It says on this page that WJ is a kiosk in a food court but this one is a kitchen behind a deluxe bar named Hinterland! Confoosey. When I asked about the food court, I was told there was another location but the person did not know where it was! What? Ha ha. That is because they work for the alcohol free bar and not WJ. They don't take cash. Beautiful upscale vibe inside. Billy took our drink orders and brought coke and tea to our table. The tea had a sand timer and teeeeeny glass pan of milk. We splurged on the Sunday roast dinners and were not disappointed. I moaned in ecstacy throughout. It was the most glorious, gorgeous, edible, delicious, fancy feast ever. I have been meat free since 1980 and have never had a meal like this. There were two options of glazed sausages or crisped cauliflower that were offered to us when we came in but we did not realize they were for the Sunday roast. Gravy, Yorkshire pudding, broccoli, roast potatoes, sage ball, cranberry jelly, it was perfection. I will be back very soon. Billy was a wonderful host and so friendy and accomodating. See you again very soon!

Consistently incredible food and good vibes from the staff. One of my favourite places to eat in Manchester.

Wholesome Junkies is a vegan restaurant specialising is in "junk food" but with a high quality twist. This restaurant is found within Hinterland and can be found just under street level in the Northern Quarter. I visited with a non-vegan friend so it really was put to the test! We both tried chicken burgers with different dressing and we were both very impressed. The fried chicken had an excellent blend of spices and the garnish on both were expertly delivered. We also ordered the Fried Oyster Mushrooms. This was definitely a stretch for a non-vegan but landed extremely well. They were super crunchy and the flavourful batter really sold it. I could have just eaten a full portion of these for my main course! Overall the food was delicious and was well worth the visit. I think the price point is slightly high given the menu is based around burgers and fries, but I will say that each thing I tried felt like there was an extra level of consideration and flavour to the dish. I would definitely advise visiting this restaurant and I convinced a friend that being vegan can still be super tasty 😁

Absolutely the best burger I have ever tasted! And the chips are devine!

Overall, a mixed bag with this restaurant. I had been back when it was originally in the Arndale as well as near Victoria so I was excited to try the new space in NQ. When we arrived, we were shown to our tables which were sat on the floor. My partner and I giggled at this but we were surprised we were not given prior warning in case the seating proved challenging for us. It also felt like a kick in the teeth that we had to then get up and go to the bar to order! We ordered a burger and chips each and were a bit annoyed to be charged extra for ketchup. To add to the annoyance, the food arrived with a measly serving of ketchup (less than a tablespoon). As good as the food was, it was quite salty so to get such a stingy serving of ketchup meant we struggled to finish the dry food. We ended up spending about £40 for two burgers and chips with a couple of sauces (no drink purchased). We left feeling disappointed and frustrated by the experience. The space was large to get more customers in, but the atmosphere wasn't great. It didn't feel as good as it used to and as much as we liked the food and wanted to support great vegan food, we won't be going back

Great vegan junk food, very tasty. We went fairly early so it was a little quiet. That's not a problem for me. The menu is full of family favourites. From burgers to tots they've got the lot. They also have a full selection of non alcoholic drinks catering for everyone. The setting is cute and intimate. I will be back to try something different when I'm next over in Manchester.

What a hidden gem! This place is down some stairs so we nearly missed it. The ambience is so relaxed and comfortable. I was impressed by the entirely alcohol free drinks menu and the selection available to purchase. Highly recommend the korean burger.

Wholesome helped served food for us at our wedding party we held at Hinterland bar. I was very grateful and impressed with the food service as there were so many of us ordering. Everyone was happy with their meals (I loved the baos in particular!) I highly reccomend :)

We just visited the Wholesome Junkies pop up in Hinterland, Manchester. Love the location, and the addition of the sober bar + the great food is a definite winner! I had the truffle burger which, hands down, was the best burger I've had in 15 years. My friend got the mac and cheese, pretty good, tasty, noochy, fairly standard. Fries and tater tots again were nice, standard stuff. The only disappointment was the Chikn wings, the texture was on point, and the visual, but i found them very bland. I was expecting a southern fried kind of flavor to them, or at least some kind of seasoning. It tasted like plain, unseasoned batter and oil. Also the sticky toffee and biscoff slice, whilst tasty, was more like a carrot cake then a sticky toffee! Overall a good experience, the staff were really lovely, nice atmosphere, beautiful location - and amazing to know that everything available was vegan/alcohol free, safe 🤣 Would definitely go back again. Also if you're planning on visiting the Hinterland location pre booking seems pretty essential.

Everything is great!!! We ordered a curry rice and the classic burger (all vegetarian) and it was very delicious. Very friendly staff, a very helpful Mexican guy at the checkout helped me!!! The waiting time may be very long but it is worth it for the food!!

Went to the pop up at Hinterland. The food was absolutely unreal. Service was swift, presented beautifully and tasted absolutely phenomenal. My fave was the Korean poppers but honestly it was all amazing.

Amazing. The food was incredibly tasty, fresh, and bursting with flavor—worth every penny. I tried the festive pigs in blankets and the roasted squash with tofu whip, and both were absolutely delicious. The tofu whip was my fave by far. I only wish they could have it on the menu all year round. Loved every bite, highly recommend!

Longtime fan, first time reviewer. Wholesome junkies constantly serves up BANGING scran no matter where they are! I've never experienced flavour like it! Whenever I eat anything from the wholesome junkies team, there's a party in my mouth and only the kindest and sexiest people in the world are invited. It's becoming a little tradition to start my year with a WJ meal, and it puts me in the most grateful and positive mindset to start off the year right! 🫶

Had the festive menu at Hinterland today, was absolutely fantastic. We had it last year on the 1st and have made it sort of a tradition so we were so glad to be able to still enjoy wholesome junkies in Manchester!! Love the regular menu too!

Best Burger ever ... and it's vegan?! Please keep the Chilli Cranberry Cheese Burger in the Menu forever! Just wow. Nice food, nice service, nice decoration. Best Burger Experience I had.

I had the privilege of having their Christmas dinner today. It was absolutely sensational. I've have many, many great experiences of food from Wholesome Junkies, but the Christmas dinner truly blew me away. Genuinely the best thing I've ever eaten!

If I was rich, I would’ve bought the entire menu just to try it. I got the festive burger, and it blew my mind. All the flavours worked so well together and, to top it off, the burger stayed together and didn’t fall apart at all. Not to mention the exceptional service, especially from the man behind the bar (at the Hinterland location) who gave my friend a free brownie and sang her happy birthday. I will always be very sorry for not joining in (I started, at least), but you were very appreciated. I cannot recommend this place enough. I just wish I didn’t live a 2hr train journey away so I could work my way through that entire menu.

Have been following wholesome junkies for a while and managed to go last Sunday. I forgot to check the opening times and nearly missed closing time, it was busy but the staff were so friendly and got us a table. The food was incredible, ordered way too much but wanted to try everything! The Korean tofu was my favourite! Loved the hinterland bar, it was so cosy and had a lovely atmosphere

The best vegan roast dinner I've ever had.

£14 for a basic burger and doesn't even come with fries comeonnnnnn Thai tots seemed ok until you got the taste of the oil seeping through. Chicken bites were so heavy on the batter and as one of the other reviews mentioned just plain with a tiny dip on the side Glad I didn't go for the large mac n cheese cus it was nothing great All this for a 40+ minute wait - felt ripped off for over £35 and being sick half the night from whatever oil was used

I have had a lot of vegan breakfasts in the UK. This was by far the best I've ever experienced. Service was fantastic but the food was something else. The breakfast burger was absolutely amazing. If I lived close by, I would be here every day if I could.

Lovely place to come for a nutritious meal and reinforce body and mind during highly pretentious times. The only critique I have to do about this venue is the low-key judgemental customer service I get (I presume is because of my posture or clothes, defo something exterior). Every time I come here they shove me in the worst tables. I just wanted a quiet corner to study, which exists in the café and was given to another single customer who happened to walk in after me. No reservation tab on the table either as there was 1 rable with a reservation sign. Food for thought: Preferencial treatment is discriminatory. As Budhists, you should act in harmony to Buddhist laws and principles, don't use the Budhism umbrella to empower your discriminatory beahviour please. Try to learn more about the person before judging or trying to hide them away. Although the ladies serving me were very kind to me. Peace, love and wisdom to all ✌🏼

We waited our food around 1 hour and no body came to check us, we asked the staff twice and still waited long time for the food to arrive. The food were cold and they gave us wrong one as well! We ordered vegan beef but came as chicken. The food are so expensive as well, very plain, nothing special, 6 pounds for 4 dumplings, we tought it might be special, but no! They are just from frozen dumplings! Very disappointing! The food are pop up as well, so the stuff there are not really care!

Really disappointing visit. The food was incredibly slow coming out, we waited for over an hour for a couple of burgers and some sides! We understand that it is a busy time of year, but there was no communication with us at all about this. We had to ask twice where the food was and got an incorrect reply (3-5 minutes, then waited 15 more) with no apology at this point. When the food arrived it was lukewarm at best and the wrong burger. We were excited to try the truffle gyoza but these were over cooked, supermarket bought ones (we know the exact brand) in an underwhelming sauce with no taste of truffle. Overall the food is average, but massively overpriced. We did finally get a couple of apologies from people who run the bar, but they essentially told us this was the pop ups’ fault and they’d pass on the feedback. We were offered to swap the burger and they did offer us free things from the menu, but who would want to wait another hour? We declined to take anything for free as a result of this experience.

I visited wholesome junkies as a one off with a vegan friend of mine. Wasn't sure what to expect but the place is so quaint and cosy. Staff were pleasant but the food..... Freakin delicious. Had the chickn truffle burger, tater tots and a squash &sprouts smash dish omg unbelievable flavours very impressed and very happy to eat vegan food here again on any occasion

Comparatively expensive vegan fast food, too much mayo on everything, but rly creative dishes and flavours from all around the world, I still rate highly tho, their burgers never ever miss

Honestly, very disappointed with the food. Ordered a large “sweet + sour chikn balls” £10.95 “prawnless toast” £6.95 and “double patty truffle burger” £15.95. None of it was worth the money tbh. Chikn balls and prawn toast size vs price is crazy. The portions are tiny, there’s no way the chikn balls are supposed to be shared… The name for sweet + sour chikn balls suggests they’d be cooked in some sort of sweet + sour sauce. They are basically chicken nuggets with a sweet chilli dip on the side. Both just tasted of grease and left a coating in my mouth, I wouldn’t recommend. For £15.95 the burger should come with fries!! (even if it is a double patty). It was nice but I’d also agree with a previous comment saying that there IS too much mayo on it.

I had wanted to come here for a long time but felt it was disappointing. I had the truffle burger which had far too much mayo in & not a lot of flavour. My partner had the chilli burger which was a lot nicer. We felt the prices were too high given what you got (£15 for a burger only - we felt it wouldn’t be a huge overhead to throw some chips on the plate for that price given the prices in the rest of the city). Service was okay but not overly friendly. It’s also a little confusing upon entering as the sign above the door says Hinterland. I’d be hard pressed to return given the choice.

I have a bit of a mixed review despite being so excited to finally try this place. I had decided to get a takeaway and thought the order would be made properly. I had ordered a truffle chikn burger and asked if I could order thai tater tots instead of the thai fries. The guy who took my order was fairly nice and said they could do the tater tots as thai tots instead of thai fries. After a wait for 30 minutes (I didn’t mind as the man who took my order did inform me that there was a bit of a wait), I was given my order and I happily headed home. To my surprise, upon opening the items, I had received thai fries instead of tots. It was so disappointing to see that my order wasn’t made right despite of being promised that I would get it in tots. Taste : I would say the burger tasted good! I enjoyed it and would definitely love to have it again. However, I found it to be on the pricier side of things as the burger costed £15.95 for a single patty. Overall, I would say my experience was average and I was disappointed as there was no one answering their contact number to rectify the mistake. Unfortunately, this is my only way of communication to Wholesome junkies. I love the initiative and the idea behind it - hope any future experiences of mine have a better outcome.

Cool place and concept, happy to see a Vegan restaurant thriving in the wild! We tried the Sunday Roast, a “pork” burger, a small mac n sheese and some chkn balls. Although everything looked delicious, the flavours just weren’t there for most of the dishes. The Sunday Roast was okay, but the gravy didn’t taste like much, same goes for the burger (serving a burger with NO sides at £14-£15 is waaaay overpriced). Mac n cheese was good, if it wasn’t for the mayo on top that was hiding the tasty sheese.

What a little find. I hustled over here from Manchester Oxford Road even though my train was imminent because I wanted to get something yummy for dinner unique to Manchester. I'm so glad I did. On advice of the folks there, I ordered the Sweet and Sour vegan chicken bites, mac and cheeze, and salt and pepper tater tots and every dish is sooooo yummy. They also recognised that I was in rush and got me all that yummy food very quickly. I'm still in the Manchester Victoria train station (just an 8min walk from them) and trying to hold out from eating all my food before boarding. The place is a bit tricky to find (downstairs in the Hinterland bar I think it said) but very worth finding. Will be back next time I'm in Manchester.

So happy they’re back! Having been once to the previous location and once to a market stall I was devastated when they announced they were closing up. When the new location was found I knew I had to get there as soon as possible. There were so many delicious sounding options it was difficult to choose but we ended up with a burger each and a few small plates to share. I had the truffle burger with the beefless patty which was absolutely delicious, a perfect balance of oniony sweetness, cheese and “beef”. I also especially loved the Thai fries which will be something I definitely get again next time. My husband had the Korean burger which he had been lusting after for ages and really enjoyed. The other small plates were the crispy shredded beefless bao (as a mushroom hater I actually loved this), the prawnless toast (our least favourite but only as the other ones were so good) and crispy chicken balls (light, fluffy and moorish). And the alcohol free drinks menu was great to see! A really wide selection of mocktails, beer, cider and hot drinks meant they have something for everyone. We will definitely return and love supporting two vegan businesses that have joined up to make something really special

One of the best vegan meals we've had - we tried a burger, korean poppers, mac and cheese and it was all delicious! It's also a really great idea to keep the bar fully no/low alcohol. Amazing!

Amazing food, we were 3 and all vegan so absolutely loved getting lots of different things to try! Had the prawn toast, sticky tofu, Thai tots, these were my faves also the mac and cheese, the burgers were amazing and so saucy, loved the truffle chicken! Also the hot chocolates with marshmallows are on point, absolutely coming back. The staff are friendly and the place has a nice vibe with cool decor. New favourite place in town!

The main point of coming back to Manchester is to come here. I have never experienced vegan food like this. Burgers; superb, tater tots; amazing (would recommend the chaat or Thai tots!!) I nearly ordered another burger to take back to the hotel with me.... I wish there was one closer to me as I would definitely be a regular. Keep doing what you're doing ❤️

Had the BEST vegan burger that I've ever had (bold statement I know!!!) Service was fantastic. So annoyed I didn't get the girls name who served me and my friend, she was lovely, she was wearing acid wash dungarees.. she was AWESOME. I couldn't decide between chicken or a burger patty.. So I had both! Wasn't too much for the lovely staff to accommodate and the sides we had were incredible (kimchi tater tots and my friend had Korean tofu bites). Will definitely be back to try the cauliflower patty burger that my friend had, she said it was *chefs kiss*

$27.85 for a (frozen?) burger and some loaded fries ? That’s pretty shocking to Americans like me 🙄 Absolutely delightful staff, delicious, flavorful food and incredible, vibrant atmosphere. With all my heart I wish you the greatest success, so one day your delicious vegan food will be accessible to more of us on the planet.. aka .. please consider lowering your prices, golly ! That being said, I look forward to coming back and supporting the movement even more, and trying more of your menu :) ..shows you how tasty everything was for me

Really great food, super funky decor. The lunchtime menu is very good value for money as as someone who is not exclusively vegan, I would certainly put this up with some of the best non vegan food I've had.

Wholesome Junkies is one of those restaurants I always find myself coming back to, not only is the food delicious but the staff are so friendly and welcoming & it just has such a nice vibe! I suggest this place to everyone, vegan or not, as the food is that good & the menu so varied that not even the most hard headed of meat eaters will complain!!

Incredible burgers! Probably the best plant based burgers we've ever had. We had the OG burger and smokey BBQ. The chips were also incredible. Beats almost famous hands down, and no cruelty needed. We'll be back!

Will forever be our fave restaurant in Manchester, absolutely amazing food, place is a vibe and staff are lovely, you must check this place out ! Great for Vegans AND non vegans, the food is bangin and all the people we have taken that are not vegan have been blown away.

I'm not for words apart from outstanding. Food, good. Service, good. Desert, good. Would highly recommend the gyoza (if you like heat) and the cauliflower 👌 Probably the best vegan chocolate cake I've ever had too. I got 4 dishes in total to dine in. The 2 mentioned above as well as a corn dog and tofu. And I got 2 deserts to take away.

Such a good spot for delicious vegan food. Korean tofu bites and mac and cheese is my go to. I love having so many delicious options for smaller plates instead of having to go for a main - and everything I've had was incredible. Staff are always really lovely, so we come back to this place whenever we're in Manchester. Highly recommend

The best vegan restaurant I've ever been to. I've been a reoccurring customer for many years now and I've tried and tasted a vast majority of the menu (when they were just a takeout kitchen and also at their restaurant) and each time everything I ate was jaw-droppingly delicious! Not once have I not had a 10/10 experience with these guys and everyone I bring, vegan or not, is blown away by how tasty the food is! Ran by a truly amazing team, serving some truly amazing food, in a truly amazing location, what's not to love? The world would suffer if we lost this place so please make sure to go and support them!!

Im obsessed with how tasty this place is. I often place an order to boost morale and am never disappointed. It’s utterly banging food. Highly recommend kimchi burger and truffle mac n cheese. I always plan for leftovers but end up devouring it in one go.

Wholesome Junkies is hands down my favourite food place in the world. Gorgeous food, friendly vibes, great options and all vegan too! There's something for everyone on the menu, with both delicious plant based meat replacements and gorgeous original plant based options. (Top tip: the off-menu oyster mushroom chicken wings are a Must Have on any trip)

Had such an amazing time at Wholesome. Easily the best burgers in Manchester, vegan or not. I've taken my friends who eat meat and they all loved it. It's a local business run by a lovely team who have consistently made incredible food so please do go and support!

This is the most delicious tasting vegan food I have ever had. The menu is extensive and I couldn’t choose, there was that much I liked or wanted to try. Service was friendly and great advice on the food. My husband loved the food even though he’s a meat eater. I can’t wait to return. Would highly recommend this restaurant it’s one of the nicest and friendliest

First stop on our vegan food crawl on our visit up to Manchester. Have followed them on Instagram for months and couldn’t wait to try their huge burgers.. Incredible that this place is 100% vegan and chuffed for them that they obviously do well. But I’m sorry I don’t think they are worth £17 just for one burger, another fiver on top for fries. The photos look absolutely massive but it’s just your standard burger size from a fast food joint. We actually went to two other places in Manchester for a burger and they were bigger and cheaper 🧐 so I’m not sure where the high prices come from really. It’s a shame because you can see so much thought goes into their wicked menu but I just don’t think they need to be that expenny 🤷🏽‍♀️ personal opinion ***edit*** Have just been to another burger joint in Birmingham and got a huge burger with loaded fries for £16, same price as what they are doing here. Also burgers in LONDON are £16-17 and include fries or a side (Mildred’s / Fat Hippo), sorry Wholesome Junkies but I can’t get my head around your prices 😭

We visited for the first time at the start of April, ahead of an event, and we're really let down by the poor service. We were seated quickly at 5:45, had our order taken quickly and our food arrived after about 15 minutes. We ate quickly as we were hungry and had somewhere to be. The food was nice but a bit overpriced for the amount we got. We waited for our plates to be cleared, but they weren't. We weren't offered any more drinks (not sure if they serve dessert but we weren't offered it if they do), or the bill. We tried to catch the servers eye but they walked by us repeatedly without looking in our direction at all. This went on for over 35 minutes in total, with us asking for the bill twice during that time and being forgotten. We eventually paid and left, and followed up with an email about our experience. Management checked CCTV and apologised, offered us a voucher by way of apology and then ghosted us for 2 weeks (so far) without providing the voucher. The customer service is a joke, the food is nice but overpriced and not worth the hassle of dealing with being ignored / forgotten / made late for events. They need to move to an upfront payment system at the very least, and retrain their servers ideally.

Amazing food and incredible atmosphere! Definitely the best vegan burger I’ve ever had. The Sunday roast is also an absolute must. Even though I’m not vegetarian, this is hands my favourite roast. With the crispiest roast potatoes you’ve ever had, delish stuffing, and savoury gravy, I cannot wait to have it again. I had it with the oyster mushroom chicken wings, which worked so perfectly with the gravy. Definitely recommend

This place is so over rated! Was really looking forward to going here and it just let me down so much. It’s only a very small place but is too crammed. Service was slow. People just brushing past your table while you eat and knocking things. Took over 25 minutes just for the drinks to come. Something like £14 for a burger and it doesn’t even come with fries! Asked for no sauce on something and it came with it. Supposed to get sauce on the side and that didn’t even turn up. Food was bang average as well and upset my stomach later in the day. Got up to pay and the waitress didn’t even ask how the food was. Such a shame as they do a really good job of selling this place on social media.

I’ve wanted to check this place out for ages. Glad we finally went—the best burger we’ve had in Manchester, the oyster mushroom “chicken wings” are something we’re still talking about—we were really impressed. They were very accommodating when they were really busy; it’s nice to find a small business who care about you having a good experience. We felt looked after and will return - next time we’re gonna try the roast! Thanks for the great service and food 🙏

i wanna start by saying the food was 9/10 in terms of tastiness. but omg the portion sizes are criminal!! £7 for one tiny bao bun £7 for a small portion of chips and a burger for £14 that didn't even come with chips , feel like i've been mugged off here and then the cheek to charge £1.50 for a small pot of sauce. the food was lovely but i'll never come here again purely because its not worth the money and they overcharge.

went there to eat with my boyfriend as I'd always wanted to try it however we will not be going back. we were absolutely shocked and felt quite mugged off with the prices in comparison to the portion sizes. £14 for a burger with no fries, £7 for a tiny tiny portion of fries and £7 for ONE bao bun. I was shocked, the bowls and plates themselves were tiny, they didn't even try to make the portions look big. and on top we had to pay for some mayo. the food is nice however it did not justify the prices. as an ex hospitality worker, I have never felt the need or want to complain to a server (as it's not their fault) however I told her what I thought this time. We were shocked that 3 items that weren't that filling came to £30. if this was a high end restaurant where you pay for the experience I would understand, however this is not the case as it is a small cramped restaurant tucked away just out of the city centre. As a vegan I love eating out and trying vegan food - I should have taken photos because I was in disbelief as to how much I paid to receive the smallest portions I'd ever seen.

The people who work here were so lovely to us and made us feel comfortable and welcome. The food was amazing and we ordered a lot for two people. But it came quickly. They also were really on it with taking orders and clearing the table. The feeling of the whole place was cozy and lively at the same time. Full of life but not noisy. We couldn't have had a better time. We can't wait to go back!!!!

Absolutely delicious food! Some of the best in Manny. Great and friendly service and the restaurant itself is lovely and atmospheric:) We’ll be back for sure

What a Find! The food here is absolutely Delicious 😃... and the service was above & beyond. I will definitely be eating here again 😃. Yes it's a little pricey... but it's quality 👌🏽

Fantastic burger !! Really really good gluten free buns. Loved it! If you're coeliac, it's a shared frier, but the burgers are good 👍👍

Unfortunately me and my partner had high expectations for this place as the photos looked amazing on Google etc & the reviews were amazing. But unfortunately, we pay £16.90 for a standard burger with no chips, and didn't look anything like the photos online, yes it was nice, but most definitely not worth £16.50.
