Devastated to find this wonderful, cosy little vegetarian restaurant (established 1978) has now permanently closed. Streatham won’t be the same without this oasis of calm. Their World Famous Banofee pie, generous salads and bakes now gone forever. Farewell to Kim and all the lovely staff and thanks for all the delicious veggy food and organic wines over the years.

Was walking past enroute to sit on the Common, looking for somewhere to buy some food for a picnic with my 3 year old. I read alot of recommendations about this place on Streatham Mums Network so decided to give it a try. It was absolutely brilliant! Heathy, delicious and substantial portions. Im not a vegan or vegetarian but enjoy eating healthily. I ordered a homity pie and side salad for the 2 of us to share. The pie was out of this world. And the side salad was big enough for us to have for our dinner in the evening. Going back again this afternoon. Can't recommend it enough.

Firstly, this review pertains not to the food served in Wholemeal, nor the service of thereof. Although I am sure I'm not their most frequent customer, I have been eating here sporadically over the last 10-years and everything has been great. They always say it takes a long time to build trust and reputation, but that you can destroy it very quickly. Perfect example being Gerald Ratner and his Ratner's jewellers empire. OK, Wholemeal is not an empire, or even a big business, but the principle applies, integrity, integrity, integrity. I called in en route to another shop, as I saw through the window that Wholemeal had become less of a cafe and more of a grocer's shop. This was days before the 'Corona' lockdown, with supermarket supplies depleted and I was personally short of many things, as indeed was my 99 year old Grandmother, who I care for. I applauded the owner's (Kim) initiative, as well as his social empathy and sense of community in selling off lots of his food supplies, as the cafe was almost now closed for regular business. I understood this was not pure altruism and as someone who consults, and has a strong penchant and empathy for, small business, I had no issue with the owner trying something alternative to keep some money coming in, to pay staff and bills etc. And even if he sold things at cost price, or even put a small mark-up on, it would be a win-win situation, especially considering he will no doubt pay wholesale prices. In actual fact, there was not so much on offer that I needed, apart from toilet rolls, and the single ones on sale were certainly not Sainsbury's Super Soft, let alone Andrex. But that did not concern me, beggars can't be choosers. But I felt almost obliged to help out and do my bit for a local business, and respected the owner's 'apparent' reciprocal sentiment. After-all, we're all in this together aren't we?? I also took a standard size pack of spaghetti, that up to now had been like gold dust, and we all know even brands like Napolina, or Rummo only cost about 90p, with Lidl and other own labels only costing around 20 - 30p. Dried spaghetti is as cheap as chips!! When Kim totalled up these two things, together with a lettuce and two red onions, I was absolutely stunned when he calmly told me £15.20, despite assuring me that he would give me a good discount when I asked about the prices. I asked specifically about the spaghetti and was amazed when with a straight face said it was £3. I told him how much it was in Lidl, and his response was, well you can't get hold of any. I was absolutely aghast at this attitude and it was only after I got home, having ditched everything apart from the cheap toilet rolls, that my disgust and incredulity sank in. This is NOT how you do good business, taking advantage of a desperate situation, that we are all affected by, and by ripping people of when they are in need. You kind of expect it from the corporates, but not from a supposed friendly, small, local business. I think the owner should be absolutely ashamed of himself, and I will never ever set foot in his cafe again, even though the food and service is good. it goes beyond that. it's about ethics. But make your own mind up. They always say people show their true colours in difficult times....

Good afternoon, As per my picture, I went for the lunch deal on the 11th of March and they provided us with the lunch meal for a total of 13 GBP. The meal was nothing to write back home about but it was decent price for Streatham I returned just 6 days after and because of COVID 19, they have almost double the prices and stop taking debit cards, only cash.... (probably related with taxes) They didn´t advise me they changed prices and they served me the same quantity as 6 days ago. On top of that they have accumulated basis necessities as toilet paper and pasta in bulk and resell them for 3-5 times the retail price. I recommended them that this policy of taking advantage of their customers wouldn´t sustain in the long term. Streatham neighbours are keen on supporting their local business but this is a shame and I reckon they will be the first ones to shut down. They lost their first 2 local customer with us. :(

Visited with my son on a Saturday lunchtime. We were excited to see a vegan cafe in Streatham and were hungry and looking forward to giving it a try. As it was very busy it looked promising at first but a female member of staff behind the counter was being very rude to an elderly lady who was just trying to pay her bill. She even accused her of having had more dishes than she was paying for! Having witnessed this behaviour go on for about five minutes and as no-one offered us a table, we went and sat down. The menu looked quite plain, unadventurous and overpriced and after 15 minutes without anyone coming to take our order, we eventually gave up and left. We won't be returning to this unfriendly and overpriced cafe any time soon!

OMG!!!!!! went to this pretentious little cafe and ended up with the owner snarling in my face while I was eating with my eight year old son and his friend. Apparently the two boys were being too loud and it was disturbing two tattoo clad women behind us. The portion sizes were huge, which for 2 people who don't have much money and rarely eat out was a lovely surprise. The food was tasty, they do serve salads and stews so I don't understand how you can say it isn't healthy (early reviewer). It may not be groundbreaking cuisine but it makes you feel at home. I have been going to Wholemeal for over 25 years now, I used to live in Tooting but often still travel back to eat there now I live in Kingston. I love their food, it isn't necessarily what I would call healthy, although you can choose healthy options, but when presented with yummy cheesy choices that often proves difficult for me. I felt compelled to write as it is probably my favourite vegetarian restaurant, I love The Gate too, but it is pricey, and 222 (but only their lunch buffet and the cafe is small and difficult to get to for me by public transport and parking is expensive), and also Mildreds in town but that is so busy. I felt the comments here about it being expensive were unfair - their portions are huge! And they do an optional weekly meal deal.I particularly recommend - homity pie, nut roast, their cheesy bakes, banoffee pie, their salads, everything really. The nut roast isn't on offer every day and their cheese bake varies in its appeal to me but there is always something there to tempt me. The staff are lovely too.Perhaps I should add - you order at the counter before sitting and pay at the till where your bill is brought to you, so it isn't fully waiter service but your food is brought to you and the tables cleared for you.

This is a simple, plain cafe and it's a very humble place. However, the service here is very attentive, friendly. The food was Chealthy, fresh, made on premises. Good bread too. decent juices( had a mixed blended fruit juice). Soups and mains tasted homemade. But nothing exceptional. Good aspects: Nicely seasoned food , tons of veggies, plenty for vegans. The dessert we tried was gross. It said " almond cake with cream. I asked if it was vegan and was told it was. Then it arrived and was NOT a cake but a pudding slab of stodgy dreck drenched in package custard. Sickly sweet and inedible. Yuck,My issues here are that the food was adequate. VERY pricey for three people sharing one dessert. Two glasses house wine. No other alcohol. Good service though. Sorry, I'll never return.

I had an appointment in Tooting, and have never been in the area before. I was pretty happy to wander about a bit and find a vegetarian/vegan restaurant, because the appointment took longer than expected and I was famished. I got there about ten minutes before they opened - they open at 12. After they put the sign outside, I walked in, and found a nice little well kept place, with friendly people ready to serve food. I had a tomato/bean soup, very filling, and a salad. The salad had a great rice and bean under it...the absolute best was the miso dressing! (I probably would have bought a bottle had they sold it!) All in all, I was lucky to find it and am now hauling my very full belly home.

We've been going to Wholemeal for years and it never fails to deliver! It's a cosy and homely vibe, in terms of both the atmosphere and the food. Everything is very fresh and tasty. There's a small range of dishes but what they do they do well. We love the homerty pie - great comfort food! The salad that comes with it is huge, varied and delicious! To be honest, it's hard to look beyond the pie so we can't really recommend other dishes but other friends and family have said good things. There are good drink options too: organic wine and beer, healthy juices, and a variety of teas. The pudding choices are always hard to resist, we'd recommend the crumble and soya custard if it's on the menu. A simple, unfussy restaurant that knows what it's doing and does it really well.

I've eaten here twice and popped in for takeout once. The food is lovely, (there's no getting away from it), but as someone who cooks a huge amount of vegan food, I think it's highly over-priced. Brunch alone cost us just over £40 and it was just everyday dishes. It wouldn't be somewhere that I could validate just popping in for something light during an average day for that reason. It would be more of a treat.

Let's get one thing clear- this place is very much, as the name suggests, a café, not a restaurant. So when cafes start charging restaurant prices, with café-level service and café-level quality, I can't help but feel a little put-off. £8.50 for a passable vegetarian stew and rice? £20 for a half-decent bottle of red? For a café on a quiet little road in Streatham (up-market it is not), this came as a bit of a surprise. 'But it's all natural', you might say. Fair enough, and I wouldn't mind that- so long as the quality was there. But it's not. The food is nice enough, but it's the level you'd expect from a diner (which is what it looks like, with the hot trays laid out in front of you). The saving grace was the banoffee pie, which was very good and I'd definitely recommend it if you do end up paying a visit. The Wholemeal Café isn't bad, but unless you're a die-hard vegetarian and limited to Streatham, you could certainly do better. There are some great Vegetarian places in Kingston of a similar price with better food, better service and similar prices. I know which one I'll be going to next time.

After 40 years trading, Wholemeal continues stubbornly in the retro vegetarian vein. Food tends to be wholesome, hearty, and unadventurous. But delicious, if comfort food is what you're seeking. the meals you find here you would have found in veggie restaurants 40 years ago, so what they're aiming for seems to be the old school, school-dinnerish bakes, jacket potatoes and soups. But one thing is unforgivable. The salads. Here is an opportunity to excel with exciting mixtures of vegetables, cooked and raw, modern flavour themes, and dare I say, a bit of effort. Instead, we have a choice of 6 bowls of ingredients for a mixed salad plate. An unchanging cooked rice salad with peanuts and raisins. A cold pasta. Sliced peppers -( too much for my digestion). Then sadly, a bowl of cherry tomatoes out of a packet. A bowl of sliced cucumbers, a bowl of rocket out of a packet and a bowl of bean sprouts... you guessed it. No effort is made to create a salad from those ingredients except by spooning them onto a plate. Thank goodness for their signature miso dressing, which makes anything taste fabulous. But please, Wholemeal, not good enough on what should be your area of excellence.

I went again with my Daughter. I am not vegetarian but I have loved their rice salad with a miso and ginger dressing for years.I had a 'Special Salad', well it was special and so filling. A wide range of salads on the plate, all excellent. That was the problem. Therevwas so much I couldn't finish it. I am a big eater and this was a suprise, and a shame!Shame because I wanted a pudding but just couldn't manage one.My Daughter had the veggie goulash, that was also lovely.Staff are warm and welcoming, music good, and price very reasonable. As Arnie says 'I'll be back'.

Taken here by a friend it was a real treat. I am not a vegetarian but I loved the freshness and quality of what was on offer here. I had a large salad, freshly pressed apple juice and banoffee pie. It was lush! Staff and service were all excellent. Will return if in the area again.

We were introduced to this café by a friend. The food here is very good and reasonably priced. Staff are also welcoming & helpful - always happy to explain ingredients of each of the homemade dishes. I love the Homity pie which is so tasty and served with a lovely mixed salad. Wonderful home made puddings on sale. Café is smallish with a steady turnover, but seats/tables have always been available whenever we arrived.NOTE. Correct spelling is SHRUBBERY RD

This place is a regular of mine as its not too far from where I live. I'm not a vegetarian but I really enjoy the food here and quitye often get takeouts when I'm feeking too lazy to cook for myself but still want something healthy. Also the portion sizes are huge so I usually get 2 meals of of one which is always a bonus!

I've been coming to this restaurant, on and off, for over 30 years. The food hasn't changed much in that time - old-style veggie, on the heavy side, pretty much canteen, 80's style. But an ok place for salads etc. Quiet. pleasant atmosphere. But something's gone wrong with the hygiene. And the usually friendly attitude. Yesterday evening I had to continually swat fruit flies away from my plate of very average, (fresh veg light, lentils and rice heavy, salad...not up to usual standard. ) They were those little black flies - the kind that hang around your fruit bowl if you leave anything to decay. This is a new one for me... It's been a hot summer, but this is the only place I've encountered this problem. I mentioned it to the server, and got met with the alarmingly off-hand reply - 'it's flies, it's food. What do you want me to say...?'Well, maybe you could come up with er... something, a little more customer-friendly?

We've been coming to the cafe at this location (different owners) for it must be 30 years. We no longer live locally but use any excuse to drop by and feed, travelling recently from Brighton to have lunch and get a takeaway for dinner. The Special Salad is superb, along with the crumble and the world-famous Banoffee Pie. The Homity Pie is a disappointment but the other hot food is excellent. The lovely lady in charge on the day we went recently was so welcoming, helpful and efficient. Do seek out this terrifice cafe - even if you are not veggie the food is great, as many of my non-veggie friends have discovered on being brought here by me over the decades.

I've just been trying veganism for a month and it's places like this that have made me consider doing it full-time! After a very warm welcome I had a kind of nut-crumble stew with mash and salad. Every mouthful was different (there were so many ingredients) and delicious. I look forward to returning. They do vegan ciders too.

Visited this place with my Vegan colleague. The food was flavoursome and filling! For a meat lover like me, I thoroughly enjoyed my Homity Pie accompanied by a selection of delicious salads. Good value for money and happy to have this nearby. Will definitely return to try the other delights!

This is one of my local haunts, a place to go when I want a quick, healthy and reasonably priced meal. The atmosphere is quite chilled, the surrounding basic but helped by the artwork of rotating artists. I think I have gone there about 10 times in the last year, the service has always been friendly, the food delicious. Sometimes I have the special but I have to admit I am slightly addicted to the homity pie. The banoffee pie is best I have had. And it is nice to see a good selection of vegan meals too. It is not highbrow, just a nice place to veg out and eat veg.

Decided to pop in for lunch between two playgroup visits. We ordered off the menu which although varied has not added any new dishes in all the time I have been visiting it, which is about 12 years. Ordered the meal deal of homity pie with mixed salad for me and my 2 year old daughter, my friend had her son and nephew with her and she had a meal deal, special of the day. The children sat at the tables whilst we ordered and were excited. They playfully began to bang their spoons on the table, yes it was loud but it was not prolonged, and for goodness sake they are only two! We asked them to stop and they calmed down and eventually ceased their fun. The owner, an angry and unfriendly man, sneered angrily at us and told us to 'please control your children they are disturbing my customers!' I replied that the children were two years old and just excited. This fact was ignored and he spent the next few minutes huffing and puffing and rolling his eyes at every noise and whimper. The atmosphere was uncomfortable, embarrassing and unpleasant. Our order came quickly but was overheated so the children had to wait whilst it cooled. They didn't enjoy any of the food we ordered, the homity pie was far too salty and is just a mashed potato on a pie base with cheese. The salad was beautiful but the portion tiny. The water jug was chipped so I asked for another, that was chipped too but in another place, I dared not ask for another. My friends food was ok, a ghoulash that was watery and contained too much cinnamon. There is no place for buggies so the owner complained about that they were in the way, but where are we supposed to put them! My friend told him how rude and unwelcoming he had been since we entered the restaurant, his exact words were 'if you are not happy, there is the door, this is my place.'My friend and I did not want to make a scene because of the children but I can honestly say it was a humiliating and most unpleasant experience for us. Aren't children people too? What are we teaching them when we act towards them like this? I'm afraid we wont be going back. The food is ok but nothing special and quite pricey for what it is.

I love going to Wholemeal & whether by accident or design it delivers, with an easy grin! Wholemeal is not trying to be anything more than a veggie/vegan cafe' unlike some high street vegetarian restaurants it's not pretentious, service is polite & friendly and I always leave satisfied with both the food and the cost. Signature dishes are Homity Pie and Bannoffee pie however their rotated dishes are just as yummy and the crumble is sinfully delicious too! Organic wines, ciders and soft drinks cap it all off and salads are made crunchy fresh every day, what more could you ask for?

Love to pop in for lunch on my own or grab a taleaway when visiting mum - in the local care home. Great food. Easy atmosphere. Prompt but not rushed service. Today I took one resistant (carnivorous) husband - he tucked well into the lush salads and dish of the day.

I've been coming here for years as it's one of the few Veggie restaurants in South London. Since moving to Streatham, we're now more frequent visitors and my sister absolutely loves the place being a Vegan - she has lots of choice and more importantly choice of dessert! I like the modern interior mixed with traditional veggie fayre, I love the wholesome meals and the great range of salads. Although I tend to favour Chocolate desserts, the Bannoffee pie is lovely!

I have been using this restaurant for 20 years. Food is good wholesome veggie, not the stereotypical raw carrot. Homity Pie (leek and potato) is the signature and the banoffie pie cannot be beaten anywhere!!

This is not a place to visit if you want to be a healthy vegetarian. Food is below average and not everything is of fresh produce. Most of the dishes if not all have melted cheese on top.Main dishes like curries and casseroles lacks flavour and imagination. This has to be one of the worst vegetarian restaurant in London .

I love this place! It's a very relaxed, cosy little restaurant serving unpretentious vegetarian cuisine. The menu is on the small side but that just means that everything they make, they do well. They rotate it now and again to keep things interesting for their regular customers.

The food was fine. Unfortunately, some of the staff lacked even the most basic social skills, and didn't seem comfortable interacting with customers. The museum itself is great, and deserves better than this strange and unfriendly place.
