We have been using the dugout for many years as it was always excellent value for money however over the past few months not only has the quality gone down significantly, the price has gone up and the “specials” that always had more than enough are no longer enough to satisfy a small child! Have stopped using after 20 years

Never had a bad take away from the dug out until tonight.They were the worst chips we have ever had. If we were closer we would have took them back. They were cold hard and tasted like cardboard.normally I would have recommended this chipshop but was very disappointed especially how the price has gone up so much.will not be going back in a hurry

chips hard and dry , tika chicken was cremated and was bitter. never use this place again, disgusted. They got money for lousy food.

Very poor quality chips, tasted and looked liked they had been re-fried multiple times. Extremely dry and too hard to eat. Would never use there again. How hard is it to serve decent chips in a chip shop?

Every time i go here i say never again but i’ve just been given the worst chips i’ve ever had. Obviously had been kept in the hopper for hours. Brown & chewy. If it wasn’t open all day this place would have shut down years ago. Dreadful 🤢 avoid.

Worse experience. Visited on way back from nec. Food was shocking tiny portions. Vile taste Expensive prices. Ended up In the bin. The staff was so rude. Esp the owner Don’t waste your money. I have visited before but not for long time Certainly won’t be going again £21 for food to go in the bin. Family was hungry so had to do toast!

I ordered fish, chips and a large carton of peas. The order arrived on time and was delicious. This was the best fish and chips that I have had for a long time, especially delivered.

I ordered mini fish chips and mushy peas. The mushy peas were full of watery juice with about 10 peas in there. The chips were gritty. The mini smush was all batter and inside was just the skin of the fish. There was no fish. Will never go there again

Horrible greasy and unfriendly staff. Seen rats in carpark wouldn't go again. Rather travel to get chips etc now

Revolting and went in the bin…had fish and chips twice my gut told me to walk out the second she started scooping the chips out the warmer, they were burnt, cold and not fit for consumption this fish wasn’t much better tasted like it had been cooked for hours! This was 6pm Friday 2nd June…the fat on the fryer is clearly not being changed which caused the bad colouring of the food and the awful foul taste…I will never walk through that door again you charge a fortune but compromise on quality! Waste of £25.00…if you read this avoid the place and go to another chip shop

I ordered Donna kebab and chips twice, I commented on the chips as they didn't look nice, I was promised they were fresh, they tasted burnt dry and were cold, certainly NOT fresh the donners were awful too, ladt time I ever set foot in the place, that once was good. Total waste of hard earned money

Poor service - order was incorrect even though I asked for it to be checked before leaving. Not happy - they need to do more to get things right!!

We visited the Dugout on a Saturday night looking forward to our chippy supper arriving in plenty of time (10.40pm) before 11.00pm closing time only to find that the door was locked and the Closed display sign with staff appearing ready to leave. Please do not display or advertise closing times that you are not going to adhere to as that can be a real inconvenience to your customers. so disappointed!

Never again will I go too this chip shop not only have the prices massively increased but the standard of the food has massively dropped. Also I found a nice big hair from the woman serving with no hairnet. Do not use this chip shop also I’ve never seen whiter dinner kebab meat anywhere else it’s rancid

Pleas tell me how this is mushy peas? The ‘peas’ are liquid, curry sauce isn’t the one either. Genuinely, I never write reviews, the peas were too bad not to say something! I’ll try and stomach the rest of this food now.

great chippy , nearly always open , wide choice of nice food , great staff , large portions, all you want from a chippy and more , you can also eat in.

Couldn't get served even though there were no other customers, this was due to taking care of delivery orders, arrived home with the battered sausage and chips, chips were totally inedible and looked like they were from the previous day, sausage had obviously also been cooked for a long time and was also inedible, didn't want to risk my son being ill and so threw it all in the bin, awful service and food.

AMAZING!!!!! I come here every time as I know the food is so good. I try other places and as I don’t eat it as it’s shocking I end up coming here anyway. Service is lovely. Portions are massive and always fresh.

This chippie was one of the best around , lately it has become one of the worst , ordered Pie it was off , The scallop was uneatable and the tin roe batter was awful , don't know what has happened, so many people telling me it has gone downhill . After todays visit I will agree it is shocking. Not going back

After waiting gir 25mibs yo be served I purchased pie and chips.. the chips were ok (ish) but the Pie was like rubber/cardboard.. it had been microwaved (reheated) for far too long. Couldn't eat it.. couldn't even bend the crust.. Vile. It went in the bin.. waste of my time and money.. Will avoid in future!!

Brought fish and chips, got home and the fish was soggy and smelt of ammonia. Took them back and was told the fish just smelt fishy!They replaced the meal, but again when I got home the fish smelt of ammonia yet again.Certainly my last visit to this establishment.

Went to get fish and chips tonight - we are staying with our friends in Tamworth for a few days. Chose the Dugout - and wished I hadn't!! The batter on the fish was not cooked through and was sticky and gooey inside. Oil was oozing from it. The chips looked - and tasted like they had been re-heated. None of us enjoyed them at all. and it was almost all thrown away as it made us feel queasy. £25.00 and change down the drain!! The food was abysmal. Also noticed a young girl come in and go behind the counter. She went in the back to put her drinking bottle down and came straight out again - could not have washed her hands - she was not in there long enough. She came out and served someone straightaway - very worrying in the present circumstances. The owner/manager needs to address this.

We thought we would try the Dugout today as we recently moved very close by. It was awful dried up piece of fish as you can see from the photos. It was £21 for fish and chips, mini fish and chips and chicken and chips, which for the quality of my fish and chips was very overpriced. We will not be going back!!!! Waste of money and the 15 minutes in the queue waiting to be served.

I haven't had fish and chips for well over a year so was looking forward to it. Got home. 2 mins away from this hole. Took a bite of the fish and within 10 minutes of biting that awful fish , I threw up. What a shame that this place has so many bad reviews including mine. I won't ever eat from there again. The fish is off.. its poison!

The dug out used to be the best chippy. I visited today their chips had gone up 20% and the quality was apalling. £2.70 for warmed up chips was not on i had to throw them . I will not use this shop again.

We as a family, from time to timeUse this chippy. Myself and my Partner decided in having One Large fish and a portion of chips Between ourselves. On cutting the Battered fish in halve to share, I cut into mine and a Very- Very Pungent smell of Ammonia arose.I have looked this up as too why?Firstly the fish Certainly isn't Fresh. This is the shocking bit?Once dipped in Batter, the person That has cooked this Fish, would Have instantly smelled the Ammonia Coming off the battered fish, that's Being Cooked ! It has put myself Off fish, of which I quite enjoyBut the Concequences of eating it Leads to delly belly. It went Straight into the Bin as I knew Something wasn't rite.

Visited on a Sunday evening around 7pm as Dosthill chippy closed , no queue so ordered however not told that the 2nd item wasn't available until the first item had been completed, therefore had to reorder & had to wait until others who had come in after served (total time in shop 15mins) but in the plus side the chips were the best we had tasted for ages.Will certainly use again

Visited here for a change on a Wednesday night when it wasn't busy or unsociable hours. Had to wait for two lots of chips to be cooked as the first batch were consumed by the two people ordering before me. Wait amounted to 15 minutes which when all you want is a bag of chips is a poor show for a chip shop. Not in a rush to visit again anytime soon.

We often stop here on the way home from the pub, it opens until very late but we usually get here around 9 - 10pm, the large fish and chips have always been good, however I would not recommend the mini fish, it has been dry, tasteless with too much batter whenever I have had it or maybe I have just been unlucky.

Had fish and chips which is pricy now days, fish all dried up and mostly batter, chips were mainly scraps. Keep giving it a try with no improvement. Never again will I give my hard earned money to this establishment.

Had chicken and chips in a box, box half full, chips were at best batter bits. Threw ‘meal’ in bin opposite chippy and went and had a Chinese. Absolute shambles.

I have been using this fish and chip shop since the 1970's.It offers all manor of fare, from traditional fish and chips to sausages, pies pasties and kebab's And for me the bonus is fresh roe.The shop is clean with pleasant staff and excellent food.The food does not swim in grease and is always fresh and wholesome.The only downside is the football choice of one of the owners.Great shop..

On moving to tamworth 6 years ago, the dugout was the best chip shop in the area, unrivalled by none.Unfortunately over the years the quality has taken a huge nosedive and until under new ownership I shan’t be buying from there again. The chips are ok but the cod (on more than one occasion) has been dry, grey and chewy and the batter Hard and greasy. It’s a shame because the staff are pleasant but with so many other good chip shops in the area who cook from fresh that this was my last Visit to the dugout.

Wait 20 mins to be serve only two on and one cooking .two people walked out got fed up of waiting .mad 2 on for 5 ockock

The woman’s nails were so dirty she looked Like she’d been gardening before work! Didn’t even bother to order just walked out. Makes you wonder if they wash there hands after the toilet! No thanks

Cod & chips stale and overcooked dryed out rubbish. Ended in the bin . Disgusted they can get away with selling old stale food.

Meal was fine had kebab but chips weren't exactly hot . Didn't like the server nails were not clean also the white ' uniform' they wear need updating or changing . Looked very shabby and dirty considering just opened the doors . A smile would also be appreciated

This used to be my go to chip shop even though we live the other side of town.

Visited late one evening just before midnight. Surprisingly busy at that time of night.

They have some pretty good deals and specials on, very popular so you can be stuck in a big queue for a while, but that's not a bad thing it's popular! Also very good opening hours, pretty much the best in the area. Will keep going back for sure!

Slow and not that great . Chip 🍟 was not that nice and the service was so slow and only 2 people in did not like any think I had not has good has it was gone downhill

Haven't been to a fish and chip shop for a long time and shopped here for some. Staff were pleasant and friendly. Never know what to have, so decided on fish and chips. The fish had just been cooked, so was hot and crisp.

For about the last Seven years or so, every Saturday lunchtime Mom and I go for Lunch here.....The staff are excellent...The service is fast...The food is well above average...The prices are keen !!...They will cook you whatever you want ( Fresh ) if you ask without a problem !!.....The staff work hard and the management is very good and keen to please....OK from time to time the potatoes that are used Vary ( Seasonal ) But that's everywhere you go !!....This is the BEST chip shop for miles.....Believe me.....Thank you to the team at THE DUGOUT Fish Bar...

Went for our weekly chippy dinner and add that with our sons friend we sat down to a good meal . Service was fast and efficient considering it was really busy but the que was handled and was quickly out there .For our dinners we had 2 mixed kebabs and chips , Steak and Kidney pie ,2 fish and chips and sausage and chips . Back at home we sat down and have to say they tasted blooming delicious . Would definitley recommend .

I eat here often, sometimes the food is really nice, however there are too many occasions when food is rushed out before it is fully cooked. The shop often busy with a large qeue and that is when you encounter problems.

Somos nuevos en la zona y decidimos comer pescado y patatas fritas, el bateador en el pescado estaba crujiente y ligera. El servicio era genial, tienen una zona de restaurante, donde nos podíamos sentar y disfrutar de nuestra comida en familia! Sin duda recomiendo el bar de pescado Cavada!

It's Sunday, you're in fazeley and you have the urge for fish and chips.....and there's only one place open, the Dug Out.The good news is, my experience has made me divert more effort in driving further away to find an alternative, or, not eat chips on the Sabbath!The service was interspersed with staff chit chat, the food was wrapped in 5 layers of paper adding to some very soggy chips, and I'm not sure how, but I have now seen oil floating on oil in a kebab...I only managed half of it, at which point even I gave in!Sorry, something went very wrong at the Dug Out.

It's rare for me to rave about a takeaway but tonight, yes, they're open on a Sunday (!) the Man brought back the most delicious flaky fresh cod & chips. It's a Sunday.... they have fresh fish, it's a miracle. Apparently there was an almighty que outside too. We've tried other places (no pun intended) in Fazeley and Tamworth, this place beats them all.

We stopped at the dugout on the way back from seeing Gardeners World at the NEC.The food there is always freshly cooked and good value for money.

We get food from here relatively frequently and have never had any complaints. Good value as to be expected, along with parking. There is one step to get in unfortunately and not a lot of manoeuvrability inside for wheelchairs however, and the seating area is up some steps, however for takeaways this specifically isn't an issue.

What a true gem of a chippy. Food was lovely. Staff friendly and you can even sit in free. Was recommended to me and was well worth the 10 mile drive.

I believe due to the size of Tamworth and the limited selection of competitive places to dine. This place maybe sufficient for the locals but anyone from Manchester,Birmingham or London will find this place pretty mediocre to say the least in regards to price, portion & taste.

Been coming here for 30 years and they still serve the best chips in town!I live the other end of town now do don't get there as often but if passing it's always worth going there. Other chippies in the area don't come close

Great service and best tasting chips. Well worth a visit if you fancy chippy tea. Car park at the side is good as other chippies can be a pain to park near. Can sit in too in the day.

I am a regualar customer for this establishment, and have been for around 20 years now. I have to say, this was the best chippy in Tamworth, but the past few years, they has been a sense of decline, I live local to this so you wouldnt expect after a 2 minute walk to my house and the food i had just spend a tenner on would be stone cold!? also price increase has been felt by the paying customer. The staff are okay, some of more nicer than other, theres no wow factor here anymore, Maybe its time for some new managment.

I visited this establishment for the first time and, most definitely, the last. I was the only customer in the shop but I was totally ignored for a good five minutes. When I was eventually served the man behind the counter was very untidy and just as rude. The food was over priced and not very warm . I will not be going there again and I would not recommend anyone else to go there.

I have recently moved to Tamworth and as I pass most days thought would have a chippy supper, I found the staff very unfriendly having given my order to a male employee his reply was (Didn't get any of that) he then repeated what I had said and I answered (yes u did get it) if looks could kill. To add insult to injury I overheard him telling one of the staff what I had said, I will never use again and the food was pretty crap !!!! If u want to be served my miserable staff go there !!!!

Today is the last time I will beToday is the last time I will be using the dugout! It has been the best chippy in Tamworth for years and I only ever bought our fish n chips there but it has gone seriously downhill over the last few months. My last 4 visits (including tonight) have provided poor quality fish, badly cooked and stored for too long underthe heatlamp. Have had to throw them away each time! what a waste of time and money.

The price of the donner kebab meat in a tray has gone up but the amount of food you get has shrunk it is not freshly sliced and the meat sits in the trays which is full of grease the staff was un caring about my comments I used the dugout regularly but after today's meal i don't think I will be going there again

I lived in Tamworth for 17 years and and I can honestly say that this chippy is the best in Tamworth.I had lived in different areas of Tamworth and always liked the food from the DuG Out. You always good good size portions, what more can I say!Just good quality fish and chips.

well it is always busy but I am not sure why it is a chippy and not the best chippy I have never seen anyone in the restaurant ?? how ever it is open when all others are closed

We go here frequently - the chips are really nice from here - I like soggy chips and they never disappoint. We have to go to this one first for my chips then another one to get horrible crispy ones for my partner. They're always friendly but there's virtually always a queue - a good sign though cause most chippies in Tamworth don't have queues - there's a good reason for that. Most importantly, they're always consistent.

This is my local chip shop which I dont use that often & won't be again! The staff are extremely rude no nothing about customer service and their uniforms & appearance are not what you want to see when you're consuming food! The food is ok but extremely over priced dont waste your money there are much better fish&chip shops in the area with better value for money AVOID!

We have been using the 'Dug Out' for 40 years and you can always rely on quality and freshness of all the foods they do and i have never had anything that has been 're-heated' They excel themselves in cleanliness, friendliness and value for money Try, you will not be disappointed!

Me and my partner decided to stop off at this chip shop whilst we were out and about. Firstly what struck me is the uncleanliness of the kitchen AND the staff. My partner had a piece of tinned roe which was the most odd looking piece of roe we had both ever saw, it was an irregular shape and looked like it had been left to fester for hours, how can you get tinned roe wrong. My partner was extremely ill after eating from here too so in a nutshell we would not recommend it and will not be returning.

The portions a very good. The quality is very good. The staff are the best in the area . What more can you say this is a proper chippy. We have 3 others nearer to where we live but it is worth the traveling time.

On the occasions I endulge in chip shop style food, especially kebabs, i will head for the dug out at two gates. The portions are great, I generally share a portion of chips and a mixed kebab with the wife and there is always plenty. Quality is good too.

Have been going here for a number of years, the portions are big, so my wife and I share one bag of chips with our main as such.One thing I would like to see is a Donar station, as the kebabs can slow down the service.The food is always spot on.

Dug-out is undoubtedly the best chippy in Tamworth. It does get a bit busy during the evening as a lot of people choose to buy their dinner from there and the queue is even longer during weekends, but it also proves the quality of the food. They sell all items you can find in a chippy plus two types of chicken (tikka and roast) and lamb doner kebabs. There are various meal deals as well. We did use to go there quite often and now that we don't live in Tamworth, whenever we go back and fancy some chips, we go there. The service is efficient, staff don't waste ages talking to customers while they are busy and some may appear at times grumpy but you can't beat the food there. Another plus is they are open til 2-3am on weekends!

After complaining I had to wait for chips twice, two others customers were served and left b4 me I mentioned that to a member of staff there reply was don't have a go I said I wasn't I was just saying isn't the saying first come first served, why when I placed my orderb4 others did they.get served there food but I had to wait ! After leaving the shop I could see I was being pointed at through the window and obviously being talked about and proberly slagged off for just having an opinion and expectations of customer service.

This is the best chip shop in Tamworth by far, we have been using it for more years than I can remember & yes on occasions we. Have gone else where but we always come back as nowhere has the same quality or portions.This chip shop as its own car park, there is also a lay by opposite, yes 9 times out of 10 there is a queue sometimes around the shop & out of the door, but you never have to wait long as there is always plenty of people serving & usually someone cooking so they don't run out of food.If you want to eat in there is a seating area.The kebabs are fantastic, good size & good priceWe travel to use this chip shop & would re commend it to anyone.

This is one of a few fish & chip shops where you can eat in. Most people come and take their food away, but there are times when you just want to sit down and eat it there and then. It's a very busy place especially in the evenings and on weekend evenings, so be prepared to wait a bit. But it's something people know and nobody really seems to mind. The food is good, hot, and there is a large selection to choose from. Are these the best chips? Well, i know somewhere that does great chips, but it's not local. So is this place the best fish & chip shop in Tamworth then? Probably? It certainly has a lot of happy customers.
