Toff's in Haringey

Absolutely appalled by the behaviour at Toff’s I wanted fish and chips fried in a separate oil from the same oil for sausage as it’s not halal. I was given terrible service from the fryer man who shooed me and told me we don’t do it. Then another man comes with a black shirt, thin with a beard saying we fry it upstairs but we are short staffed so no one can do it. Which is absolutely lies as there is a fryer at the end, but they couldn’t be bothered to fry it for me because I’m Black and Muslim. I’ve never felt so belittled and dismissed in my life, I will never go back there I’m so upset! To have grown men make me feel like I’m not worthy to provide a service for, it really disheartened me. I’m so disappointed with Toffs customer service it is the worst!!!

Buying fish and chips and getting a tiny bowl of chips and a small fish is a joke small portions and isn’t even that great anymore 😄

Toff's has been taken over by new management; they admitted as such after being asked. The fish and chips is nothing like it was the last time we visited. The cod was clearly not fresh with a grey appearance and flaky texture befitting fish which was well past its prime, and with a considerably reduced size. When settling the bill, the member of staff did not ask how the food was, but did ask whether we would be leaving a tip! Needless to say, we didn't. We won't be going there again. Pity!

Good traditional fish and chips experience, the lunch time menu is the thing to get (Even if they forget the buttered bread)! Good to see grilled or battered options.

Fried fish extremely greasy. Waitress advised was probably because they hadn't drained it properly after frying as were rushing owing to initial mix up of our order. No apology offered. Food left unpleasant taste in mouth for rest of afternoon. At £50 for 2 of us, totally unacceptable and we will not return

Very dry chips and the fish batter was wet. Not crispy On last few visits for take aways. Not as good as used to be. Disappointed

No longer halal friendly or chips suitable for vegetarians! My old fish n chips place from when they were known as Barracuda back in 1979 are probably still very good but no longer suitable for customers with dietary requirements as the staff just confirmed they fry their fish and chips

Very expensive fish and chips at £20. Fish was very dry and chips tasteless and also on the dry side. Expected perfect plate of food at that price. On a busy night there was only one waitress who did the best she could to cover all the tables.

Went with sister and brother in law and had an amazing meal ! The fish,chips,tartar sauce and the gherkins are first class! We are known by staff and they make us feel very welcome and a wonderful experience 😀

Overpriced, scaly and not worth the hype. Went on a Saturday night. Waited 10 mins at the door only to be told that reservation was required. We then decided to get takeaway anyway as we’ve heard so many good things about the place but was only met with disappointment once again. The fish had scales on and there was also a bit of small plastic in it which is a safety hazard. Definitely not worth the above average price tag. Would not recommend.

Great place came since was a little girl now 27years old food is always fresh tasty and brilliant quality. Good variety great price !x Perfect for a nice family meal out or a date night. I even go alone its got a beautiful atmosphere the workers are so friendly very family orientated. We ordered on the phone and were told it’d be ready within 20/25 mins and they made sure it was - given how busy they are that was very good. We ordered 3 grilled and 1 fried cod, chips, mushy peas and calamari. The only thing we didn’t enjoy was the calamari however the rest of the food was amazing. The tartar sauce was also very good and a huge portion. It’s a little expensive but probably one of the best fish and chips I’ve had. I’ll definitely return.

I have been coming here for years as the food was top notch but something has changed. Now is not good at all. Shame.

We have lived in Muswell Hill for a few years now and loved Toffs, however the quality of food really has deteriorated. We ordered take away tonight and the chips were just not up to standard with a handful not even cooked properly and raw potato on the inside, fish was ok but lacked crisp. Real shame. If anyone can recommend other good local fish and chip shops that would be great.

Been here a few times, and always leave happy - only because the food is great and the service is superb. The fish is super fresh coated in crispy light batter and does not feel greasy. Likewise the chips are light and crunchy and delightful. Service is always consistently great and friendly. Always make a booking for a table. Highly recommend the turbot too, sweet delicious fish. Overall, would come again and again.

Coming from the South Coast, I have never been able to find good fish and chips in London since I moved here 15 years ago! I always walk past this place and never tried it, today I got a take out as I was on way back from a dog walk and it was the best fish and chips I’ve had in London! Chips are perfect, chunky, not greasy and just crispy enough with some bits at the bottom of the bag. Nice gentleman serving me at the counter today. Will be back for a sit in dinner soon to try their hospitality!

Great little place, very fresh fish cooked nicely to order

Great service and delicious food . We went as a family in large group. Server was very pleasant and helpful. Only thing we didn’t like was the veggie option - pasty wasn’t great and I don’t see why a veggie fish option (halloumi or jackfruit/ banana flower) isn’t available. Our veggie family member felt a bit left out!

We had cod + chips + mushy pea. The fish is fresh, perfectly cooked, not too oily. Nicely chunky chips. Generous portion for both cod and chips. Award winning restaurant. Been my go to place for fish + chips. Friendly folks at the restaurants and many regulars.

This was my first experience getting food for takeaway at this place. My friend had recommended it, but unfortunately, the food didn't live up to the expectations. The fish and chips lacked flavour. However, the main issue was the way the waitress asked us to leave while we were waiting for our food. It would have been better if the staff had shown more understanding and provided better customer service.

we have been coming here for many years and have always found the food and the srvice to be well above normal standards, however after being away in france for a few months, we came back to toffs and had a very nasty surprise. the service is now zero, it was ages before the waitress came to take our order and then it took even longer for her to bring my whisky and our bottle of wine. we ordered fish cakes but they were off. fishcakes were a speciality of toffs made from fish, NO POTATO. so we ordered calamari and scampi to be followed by grilled cod. it took another age for the scampi and calamari to show up and what a disappointment, the scampi was in a very deep thick crust of batter and the calamari was soft, not crispy as it usually was. the grilled cod when it finally arrived was ok but nothing special like it used to be before. most utterly disappointing and we certainly will not be going again. what a shame they have ruined this once exceptional restaurant.

Ordered calamari and pop corn prawns to take away. The shop has two calamari dishes which are priced differently, when I asked what was the difference they laughed and said both are calamari. Why then was one priced higher?? The calamari was cooked weirdly with butter. The price of the dish was more than in a lot of restaurants, which is scandalous. Avoid this place as there are loads of better seafood places around!

Absolutely incredible. The food was exceptionally tasty. The service was good (we did have to prompt about the missing mushy peas) but away from that, I cannot fault the customer service. He was friendly, gave advice, and seemed welcoming. Though my friend and I initially felt a little like we were the sites at the zoo, we enjoyed the general vibe. People were enjoying themselves and so did we. I would definitely visit here again. The fish was huge, the chips were lovely (I could always have more!), and the curry sauce was delicious. The garnish was comical as it looked like an afterthought. Perhaps they could find a way to do it so it doesn't look like a sad salad but an intentional little bit of garnish. (Just my view, of course). May need to change the lettuce to something greener and prettier of the mixed greens variety, maybe? Price was mostly fair. It is, after all, posh fish and chips in Muswell Hill 😉 I'm definitely adding Toffs to my list of places to go to and recommend. Thank you.

I bought the fish and picked it up at the counter and the attendant gave me cold fish. Furthermore, he was very rude and intolerant of my English, which is not good, but understandable. I will not return to this establishment again.

I usually go on fridays to sit there and it, the other day i sent a friend to pick up some fish and chips. The chips must of been sitting in oil for some time, did not look fresh and the fish the same. The skin was so dark it looked as if it was replaced in the oil to cook. so very disappointed. Not sure if i will be going back again.

Takeaway lunch yesterday. Skate and chips. An occasional treat for us as involves 45-minute round trip. Batter was dark coloured, crusty and saturated in fat, fish inside dried out. Inedible. Clearly had been double fried, despite manager’s claim on phone fryer had admitted to just over cooking it. Why waste time sending it out? Refund offered but couldn’t be processed, in this day and age! And voucher by email will take days to send. Why?! But then, no worries. We won’t be rushing back. What happened? Is place under new management?

I have to say that my visit to toffs today was not great, I called in to order a takeaway (3 x haddock and chips and grilled king prawns and chips) and was surprised at the cost, just over £64 to feed 4 people. I understand that prices have gone up and all but still, wasn't expecting that. That's not what made the visit not great, it was the food itself, the prawns were not seasoned like they had been on previous occasions, the haddock being crammed 2 into a box made them steam up and lose their crispy exterior, the chips were not fresh (perhaps they were sat in the chip scuttle for too long) and to top it off? Barely any salt or vinegar on 2 of the chips (I had to ask for extra on one and to be fair I asked for one portion to only have salt). I've been to toffs quite a few times and enjoyed my meals but today I was disappointed with the food. Please also fix the tills so you can print out an itemised receipt with the prices on there, any epos system should be able to do that.

Good fish and chips. Cod was delicious. Chips were as expected. Curry sauce was too salty and the savaloy was a bit tough. Pleasant staff and was served quickly for takeaway.

We ordered fish n chips with mushy peas and a chicken pie. The fish was huge and the best I have ever tasted. The peas were excellent and the pie was just OK as it had very little chicken inside. The chips had no crunch and looked undercooked. Our waitress was wonderful.

We have been coming here for years and never had a bad experience. We just visited and noticed that the fish is a lot smaller but the prices the same... we asked about it but we were told its measured by weight.... well we know what we have been getting for the past 12 years. Then noticed that I don't recognise the staff or the chefs... It turns out Toffs have been bought 2 months ago. Now we can see that the new owners are cutting the portions but charging the same... What a shame, we won't be going back.

Lived here for nearly 47 years but never set foot in Toff's until that day. Very clean and tidy.

What a shame This ain't a review... This is me rewriting my review where before I gave Toff's a 5 star on every category... I'm sadly changing it to 1. After going there for YEARS (20 years or so)... Sadly... Toff's ain't no more what it was. Two months ago the owners sold it to a company that are known to franchise every they buy. Fish portions have now become so small yet the prices the are same. I just paid £46 for 2 small fish , chips and 2 cokes. After years of promoting Toff's to everyone I know... I shall no longer do so. Today would be my last visit. I began with this review as I will end it... What a shame.

It is confirmed as the best fish and chips in London; far from the tourist flows of the centre, in the north-eastern area of ​​Muswell Hill, it is a welcoming place, with impeccable service and above all delicious food. Even though we were with two small children who caused a bit of chaos, the staff was understandable and helpful. Delicious fish, not only the classic fish and chips but also the other dishes. Super generous portions. Highly recommended. It is also worth going there to discover an area of ​​London that is certainly not touristy but beautiful

Eating in is understandably quite a bit more expensive than takeaway. The plaice was huge and beautifully cooked. Chips nicely done, and tasty coleslaw.

We had the cod and haddock fish and chips. I could tell it was really fresh and it showed in the flavor. Probably the best fish & chips I've ever had. Also the sticky toffee pudding was to die for. Servers were super friendly!

Friendly staff and delicious fish and desserts

The fish was quite good, but our evening was spoilt by a the aggressive grumpy waitress, who had no customer service skills. I had to ask twice for a glass of water and received a curt rude reply. when I complained she became aggressive. This was the opposite of hospitality! Such a shame as Toffs has always been a nice friendly place, and my family and friends have felt comfortable and enjoyed it. This totally spoilt my evening, so I wouldn’t return and wouldn’t recommend it.

Just....wow. first time visiting Toff's and was fantastic. The food tastes amazing but the highlight was the curry sauce. AMAZING!!! Prices are above average but your paying for QUALITY. can't wait to come back!

Been comming to Toffs & also referring to friends and family for over a decade as the best F&C - unfortunately recently it’s become the very definition of what fish and chips should not be - fried cod was greasy it’s base soaked in oil - the grilled salmon and cod were soo overcooked you would think you are eating a badly cooked cheap cut of leather - extremely disappointing and now 3 times in a row!!! Here in lies the end of Toffs on 12th of April 2024!!!!

An institution in Muswell Hill, with a catastrophic supply chain problem once a week on a Friday night. Expect to stand out in the cold for 45 minutes if you are incautious enough to fancy a cheeky haddock and chips at 730 on a Friday night.

The food was not that hot and not good beef and onion pie not good at all. Cold and chips were half hot and half cold. When we ask for the bill the staff said tips. I founda little bit rude to ask Makes you feel sooooooo uncomfortable.

Probably one of The most awful Fish and chips after I had eaten my scampi And chips after this throughout the rest of my evening I was constantly Throwing up, scared the life out of me honest to God I do not trust the fish they make people can believe what they want to believe but honest to god this food ruined my body.

Outdated fairly rubbish old fish- how can a Dover sole be hard and seemingly past it’s sell by. Starter of prawns was ridiculously drowned in garlic A waste of an evening! Prob ok for basic take away but otherwise it’s real bad!!

Traditional wooden panels and a huge menu, even fresh roses on the table. I ordered the lunchtime special, with tea. My haddock had big flakes of fish, boiling hot and full of flavour. Crispy batter and great chips. It came with bread and butter a side salad and ketchup and tartare sauce. Friendly service, nice atmosphere, even though it was busy. Managed to fit in a steamy, sticky toffee pudding and custard. It was really goohy and so good. My lunch cost nearly £25, ok for London. High standards, best fish and chips away from the seaside.

We are real foodies and lived in Muswell Hill years ago so regularly had cod and chips from the original toffs when they won the national award I called and asked for 2 large cod and chips it was ready who arrived Sadly the fish was not cod but a watery tepid fish cod is steak like and has structure this was limp and lifeless To be fair the chips were good as you would expect from a chip chop But if someone asks for cod provide cod or at least be honest and tell them of a substitute

Went to Toff's following a raving review in Time Out magazine. Thought, as I have a friend who lives near there, I'll pick up my Brixton anchor and sail north of the river to treat us both to my favourite culinary Britainalia. Yes, the service was friendly and efficient. The fish was fresh, flakey and juicy. But that was it. The rest of what makes a f&ch the complete meal was, from not really special, to very dissappinting. Chips was a good few moments short of that desirable ballance of outside crispiness and inside softness, while batter was soked in oil, making shoveling the meal down the gullet quite heavy going. It is an absolute shame as it was obvious that all the ingridients were there, including a delicatelly thin batter coating, but sloppy executon had ruined the opportunity.

I was dropping some family members off to Heathrow, and stayed over at a relatives in London for the night, and she recommended eating at Toff's, so glad we did, the food was amazing, and the service from Ahmad was top notch. I highly recommend this to anyone.

Was served a truly magnificent piece of haddock that was up there with my top five ever fish and chips meals. I actually couldn't move after finishing Eating in is a (relatively expensive) treat - but oh so worth it Book ahead as seating is limited - otherwise takeaway is an option (The length of the queue is evidence of the popularity & quality of Toffs)
