The Trawlerman in Wigan

Seizing a break in the rainfall, I decided it was the opportune moment to pay a visit to The Trawlerman in Wigan. Given the acclaim surrounding this fish and chip shop, my expectations were lofty, yet they were met without disappointment. The traditional chippy boasted indoor and outdoor seating, with the interior design catching the eye through its black and white menu boards and clean equipment. The staff were professional, and of smart appearence, and friendly. My order included a large fish (cod) and large chips, alongside what is affectionately termed a Smash Barm - essentially a battered potato scallop nestled within one half of a barmcake, crowned with mushy peas and capped with the other half of the barmcake (bread roll), and it was tasty. I then sampled the celebrated Wigan Kebab, a simple concoction of a meat and potato pie served on a buttered barmcake, which was equally enjoyable. The visit was enjoyable, and I wouldn't hesitate to make a return should I find myself again in Wigan. Beautiful chippy! We travel a good 10 minutes by car to get food from here. Food is always fresh and piping hot. Very clean and a must have on a Friday night.

Good local chippy, friendly, welcoming staff. Nice, fresh fish with good batter, chips are chips and they were ok too. Cash only unfortunately, but i think there is a cash machine in the newsagents next door, they don't offer delivery but the service is fast inside.

Outstanding. What a fantastic traditional chip shop. My first time visiting this evening. We had fish chips peas along with a pot of curry & gravy. Not had a fish supper if this standard in a very long time. Fish & chips cooked to absolute perfection. Peas nice & thick & lovely tasting. Curry & gravy lovely tasting & thick. We had some scraps which was so nice to see as a lot of chip shops no longer do scraps. As the shop was due to close I was offered 2 scollops free which was a really nice touch. The staff are extremely friendly & polite & the shop is immaculately clean.

I'm always met with a big smile. The staff are always happy and laughing. Chips hot and cooked to perfection. My steak pudding is fantastic. My boy loves the cod Goujons . My husband has the fish chips and peas and says the batter is always spot on. Fantastic service.

Absolutely fantastic chippy. The staff are friendly. The food is off the planet. We had 2 fish, that were about a foot long, as well as being over an inch thick. Perfectly cooked, along with crunchy, "proper" chips. We also had plenty of scraps too. Our new favourite place for fish and chips. Thanks to all of you

Just a great Chippy. Everything was fresh. The staff very friendly. Had seen the Chippy on social media and didn't disappoint. Few of the menu items have different interpretations however there the same things. The dine in area is only small but it's cosy. Proper mugs of tea as well. Get down there.

My first visit and have to say best fish and chips I have had for a good time. The fish was lovely and white and cooked to perfection with nice crispy batter. Chips excellent, tasty and dry and served with a good portion of tasty mushy peas. Prices are very reasonable and will have no hesitation in going again, very enjoyable

Best fish and chips ever had, the wife had steak pudding that she thought was delightful. We knew the chips was going to be good before even trying them as they looked delicious as they were serving them. Staff was lovely will definitely be returning.

Just been cost us over £13.00. It was the worst food ever tasted. Chips were over cooked and had a burnt taste. Fish was burnt to a crisp. Peas were tasteless. Only thing eatable was the sausage barm. But you can't go wrong with the sausage as they are frozen catering sausage that are just deep fried. Never again will I go there.

Lovely shop, the Wigan Kebab tasted great and was much bigger than I was expecting especially for the price. You definitely get more than what you pay for, and they do some seriously good pies. The workers were all lovely and didn't mind us getting a picture with the man himself. Will definitely be going in again when I'm next in the area.

Best in Town by far. The fella has cracked it. Was dubious when he took over a few years ago. But their food really does stand out. I don't know what oil they use, but I prefer it to any other chippy in town.

Wow! I urge anyone looking for great fish and chips in Wigan to go here. Huge queue and it did take my other half a while to get served but we would queue every time if we had to. The fish is unreal from here. We understand why there was such a huge queue because it is amazing here!! ☺️

Absoloutley amazing, looked about today for a decent fish and chip shop after buying food we dont like from others, the reviews lead us here and so glad they did the food and the service from the dining area is outstanding a true credit to the local comunity this business

Extremely friendly excellent food and cooked as you like it. They also have scraps. If you not sure what scraps are well you have never lived. Bits of cooked fish batter. Great with salt and vinegar these didnt make it home the 4 mile journey was too much to bear and as I got towards wigan centre they just started whispering to me. Eat Me eat me iam so crunchy .well what am I supposed to do. I didn't need asking twice not even once so the scrap paper went straight in the bin when I got in. The fish was so large it almost covered two plates. and the chip well they where brilliant. So it only remains for ne to say I will be back. The only downside about the trawlerman chippy is that they shut too early. The menu is vast ho and dud I mention the gravy!!! No well it should be up for an award. Its not as good as my sunday roast gravy .I've had many years perfecting that but it's up their. So marks out of ten it a full Ten .

Possibly the finest pie chips and curry sauce I have ever tasted.

Quick service, friendly staffs and delicious fresh made and lightly battered. Just the way I like it. I recommend it to anybody.

Went there and I wished for a smack barm pea wet, got up in the morning all happy because i was finally going to get that tasty meal. When i got there the they said the potatoes were to small to make smack! I cried and cried some more.. I finally stopped crying and decided to get the fish and chips, those were an absolute scran, I loved it. Great place would recommend!

My first visit here. Amazing food, great value for money will definitely be coming back even if I have to drive 20 mins.

We have recently set up a four person panel to review our local chippies. Our final judgement rates The Trawlerman by far the best and most value for money. Our only concern is that one of the four person panel enjoys fruity curry, and he was distraught when he was given the news you do not sell fruity curry, he soon came round when he saw the excellent portion sizes. Keep up the good work Trawlerman/Trawlerwoman/anything else you identify as.

Best fish and chip shop in wigan

Eight people in the queue in front of me, early Tuesday afternoon was a positive start, as you don't queue for mediocrity! As per the pictures, the portion sizes were perfect. The quality of batter on the freshly cooked fish was excellent, as was the quality of the chips. The three members of staff were very busy, but had time for a smile and a friendly chat. Restaurant quality from a takeaway is hard to replicate, but they've managed to do it here! I'll be back again soon! Definitely worth the full five stars. Try it, you won't regret it.

What a place, i made the decision to visit after watching the Joe video. We diverted from the motorway on the way to watch the mighty Gillingham FC at Accrington Stanley. We ordered the Wigan Kebab, Babbys Yed, Pea wet and Smack. The food was amazing 👏 All the staff were incredibly friendly, it felt like i knew them for years as they were so engaging. This place really is a gem. If we are going through Wigan again i will be calling in. The best chippy experience i have ever had.

Seriously the best chippy around! Believe the hype, it is that good. Great friendly people, and good prices for what you get. The Smack barm pea wet is phenomenal! The baby's 'yed was scrumptious. And of course the classic fish and chips were spot on! We came all the way from America and we were not disappointed!

SMACK BARM PEA WET & WIGAN KEBABS GALORE! This is the best chippy in Wigan, especially if you're after the famous (and elusive) Lancashire chippy items. Wigan Kebab (which is a meat and potato pie in a buttered bread roll), Smack Barm Pey Wet (battered potato scallop in a bread roll with water from mushy peas) and Babbysh'ed (Steak & Kidney Pudding). The guys running this place are great, and this is a must if you're visiting Wigan, or you're going to a Rugby League or Football match at the DW Stadium up the road.

Walked out as I would not have had time to eat in my limited lunch break. Only one serving and she was way too slow. Sorry but won't be back to actually try the food.

Lovely sweet tasting potatoes in the chips, fresh tasting fish with crispy batter. Great customer service and at a good price. Could it be any better? Yes. The curry sauce needs watering down a bit. That's about it 😊

The staff are friendly but on two occasions now the chips have been undercooked the gravy didn't taste the best, the pie was disgusting there was black hard bits in you couldn't even pull apart with your fingers the filling was grey, looked like an old pie, won't be returning to this one again

Where do I start? The customer service, the hygiene? The FOOD???!! This place is an absolute GEM to the chippy community, I can honestly say that I have NEVER ate food that taste that good, the place goes viral, I met the couple that run the place and WOW, I felt like I'd known them for 20 years, the most friendly people I've ever met. Now I'm not a huge fan of pies, but when I tried the wigan kebab..... BRAIN WAVE, I'm actually kinda sad that I've eaten here because now I've tried the very best, no where else will satisfy quite like this establishment, INCREDIBLE!!!

Ive been having Fish & Chips from The Trawlerman for nearly 12 months now and its brilliant. I even tried the famous "Wigan Kebab" for the first time during the summer and was converted straight away 🙂 Great value for money, service and lovely owners too 🙂👍🏻

Unfortunately fell well short of the reviews I've been seeing recently. I was actually convinced my partner had gone to the wrong place when I opened the food. Positives first - My little girl loved the sausage. The steak pudding was hot, fresh and tasty!! Gravy and peas were also fresh and hot. Everything was packaged well to keep it as fresh as it could be. A bit worse now - The fish was fresh & tasty however it was soggy and fell apart from the wrapper. Looked a reet mess!! A LOT worse now - The backbone of a chippy!! Chips!! They definitely wernt fresh!! Luke warm, soggy, greasy, brown.. a million miles from the great looking pictures seen online from this place. Literally some of the worst I've had 🤮 Perhaps that's why we got such a large portion of chips as they were what was left before closing, quite the opposite of the 'quality over quantity' seen in response to other reviews critiquing the portion sizes.. Maybe the time we went just wasn't right but you would hope the quality remained consistent throughout a shift.. go closer to when opening and it'll no doubt be much better..

We are relatively new to Wigan and have a long family history of fishing. We were recommended to try The Trawlernan and have not been disappointed. We know good quality fish n chips from our home town and have found the same here. Delicious batter on very tasty fish. Friendly owners and exceptional service.

There service was brilliant really nice people but the food I would say other wise the chips were a bit greasy and rigid in some area’s and the fish was a bit chewy and soggy but overall might come back
