Used to be a regular at this restaurant years ago. Decided to call in and give it ago as we hadn’t been for a few years. The restaurant is clean and comfortable service was good. I eat thai food regularly so I know how dishes should taste. I ordered Pad Prik beef. It was very tasteless with a sweet taste. If you never tasted real thai food then maybe don’t try here first as it may disappoint you. Very basic tasteless food won’t be back !

First time to visit this hotel for work stay. Had food in the Thai restaurant and I couldn’t fault it. The spare ribs were lovely and the meat just fell off the bone. Then the spicy chicken main course was beautiful. Service was great very friendly and attentive. Reasonable price. Will definitely be back

Regular visitors here and it never disappoints. Food is amazing and the staff really helpful. Highly recommend the Beef Massamam curry and my wife always gets the Star of Siam special rice

What Thai restaurant serves prawn crackers with tomato ketchup? Not just that they served duck spring rolls with ketchup as well, likely to save a few pounds. The waitress gave me a look of shock when I asked for some plum sauce. To top it off I couldn't get a chicken massaman curry which has to be one of the most popular Thai dishes going. Never again!

Despite living close by for over 2 years, we went to The Star of Siam at The Highfield Hotel in East Rainton. Booked online and had a nice table near the kitchen entrance which meant we got see and smell all the wonderful Thai dishes leaving the kitchen. Service was great and the food was fantastic. No pressure to finish up and leave we were just left to sit and chat after we’d finished. Very reasonably priced and a nice bar adjoining for before and after drinks. They also do take away. We’ll definitely be back.

Had a meal here on the night we arrived. Chose from limited menu of two or three courses. There’s a choice of about 4 starters and five main course. Portion sizes were just right allowing room for the cheese cake dessert. I’d definitely eat here again

Looking to book a hotel in the area for a visit in the near future we spotted the Thai restaurant was attached so decided to have lunch when we went to book. Although the place seemed to be light on staff we were served quickly by friendly waiter. The food was excellent and one of the best Thai I have had in a long time. Whilst the place was a bit out of the way, I would recommend seeking it out.

Decided on banquet meal. Starters were ok. Hot and sour soup was horrendous couldn’t eat it. Awful taste and just swimming in oil. Main meals were just ok not much taste to them. Sweet was ice cream and you can’t go wrong with that! But was presented with a dirty (food on) big serving spoon to eat it with? Other family members had ordinary ones. I asked for an exchange and got a tea spoon! All in all a disappointing visit after having been and had specials before this banquet was DEFINITELY NOT WORTH £29 per person!! Sadly reluctant to go back now.

We have been visiting Star of Siam for over 20 years. Food and service have always been excellent. We visited again on 2 March. Unfortunately the food was not quite up to the usual standard. The Pad Thai noodles lacked their usual distinctive flavour and our curries were rather bland and looked quite anaemic, whilst also lacking their usual intense flavour. To be clear, there was nothing wrong with our meal - it just didn’t reach the usual very high standard. I suspect there may have been a different chef on duty. We will certainly continue visiting Star of Siam - and hopefully the usual chef will be working. Highly recommended.

Had a family birthday celebration in a wonderfully relaxed atmosphere. Fantastic attentive staff made our visit very special. Loved the food which was well cooked and well presented. Good parking at rear of restaurant. Will surely visit here again.

Visited for a friend’s birthday and had a great night! The restaurant was really busy, but that didn’t impact the service, our two waitresses were fantastic, we were seated and served very quickly. Most of us ordered from the set menu, which is great value for money. The food was super tasty with good portion sizes, so good we all had some boxed up to take home with us. The pub is really cute too and great for pre/post meal drinks, defo worth a try 🙂

I couldn’t review the food as never got as far as ordering anything or consuming anything due to the attitude of the worlds worst waiter. They want their heads looking at employing this person to interact with customers. Came to take our order, asking us what we wanted to drink and seeing as we had already made our menu choice as well (wasn’t exactly complicated as we were happy just to have the set menu so wasn’t exactly a complicated order to take ) I said we are ready to order food as well to which he then proceeded to have a complete hissy fit, resulting him saying to us “for gods sake “ and stormed off to serve another table , leaving us looking at each other in complete amazement!! Considering there was only about another 5/6 tables occupied I’d be more thankful someone was about to order £48 worth of food plus drinks. Never seen anything like it, bad day or not you simply DON’T go on like that to a paying customer. Farcical.

Star of Siam has always been an excellent restaurant service just right , menu choice and quality and presentation of food perfect.

Went with 3 friends on Sunday 24th September 2023. Service was great, staff were friendly and helpful. We took advantage of the special menu, two courses (starter and main) for £13.50 and we added a few extras. We all ended up ordering deserts which were lovely. Will be returning.

Returning customer. Yet again, outstanding authentic Thai food, with great attentive service. My guests from down south were astonished at the quality and prices at this authentic Thai restaurant.

I had been several times before but all over 15 years ago. Read some of the reviews and decided to make our own minds up. Went for the 2 courses instead of a la cart and had chicken satay and dim sum for starters. We shared and both dishes were really flavoursome. For main we had chicken with basil and chilli and beef in oyster sauce. Both dishes came with egg fried rice and all portions were really generous. I had a large coke and the bearded one had a large lime abs soda. Bill came in at £29 for the food and overall cost came in under £35.20. The man that served us also deserves a shout out. He was really busy as there was only him behind the bar and there were quite a few tables and more filling up as we left. He was attentive but not over the top. Loved loved loved the place and can’t wait to return with our darling son!

We go for the food which is always delicious. Set meal for 2. We have noticed a smaller amount for the entre but still excellent and overall plenty of quality and quantity. We had our desert to go which we enjoyed 2 hours later. Service is always very good. Highly recommended Thai meal.

Ive driven past it many of the times over the years but had never been in for a meal until tonight. What a surprise, the bar was busy when we went in (at 6pm). But we had a pre booked table in the restaurant which was lovely. The food was delicious and the service was excellent. The duty manager Gee served our table, and she was great. We will definitely visit again.

Food is nice but portions are small for what they cost. Most staff are lovely apart from the owners,one being a lady who is abrupt and rude,seems never to be there to help out staff that are dealing with drunken groups of ppl who stay at the hotel attached. N.B….. Take a coat lastly as the place is Baltic. After eating we sat in the bar and everyone had coats on as apparently the owners won’t allow staff to turn the heating on,poor girl behind the bar was shaking she was that cold. Decor is dated also and chairs are dirty and dropping to bits,quite embarrassing but rooms seem nice and good value. Honest genuine opinion,hope it helps.

We have been coming here for a long time. Never been disappointed. The Thai food is authentic and absolutely fabulous. The service is so good: professional and so welcoming. The duty manager oversees everything:checking everything is up to scratch. 10 out 10 to the chef.

Been here loads of times. The food is always amazing and reasonably priced. The service wasn't the best this time around. The young girl could not have been less interested. So much so she forgot to put our drinks order in. Which was her only job.

We've been many times 95% of the time it's outstanding, from the food to the bill on occasions the service can be slow but that's down to the youth of some of the staff I believe.

We visit this gem of a restaurant at least twice a month. Have done for the past 25 years. The food is authentic, my dad worked in Thailand for years and can vouch for this. The best Dim Sums and Beef in Basil & Chilli. Great service and atmosphere. Fabulous all round 💗

Drinks came quickly food order taken quickly but the food was well below average. The chicken skewers starter was barely cooked small and tasteless The ribs were nice and tasty as was the spring rolls but the mains were so bland and tasteless most of mine and my wife’s were left. This is our favourite restaurant, nothing compares to the quality of food and the friendly staff. If you haven’t tried Thai food we recommend it, our meal was perfect as usual!!! We highly recommend for a lovely meal in a friendly environment and will be visiting again soon !

We booked in advance for my daughters 25 birthday as after researching she chose the venue having contacted them direct and confirmed they had tofu available as a menu option. On arrival At 7.30pm we were asked to wait in the bar despite the table being available for our party of 6 adults. We waited over an hour for our order to be taken and when a separate party who arrived after us were served before us we sought out the main waitress asking to order.Our main courses were serve nearly 2 hours after arrival (9.45pm) and they had no tofu or duck left? The food was not at all good with several dishes being swamped in fish oil and therefore tasting all the same. Two of our party choose the Banquet which included coffees, however when the meal was complete the waitress took the orders for coffees only to return to inform us that the restaurant had no milk. On paying the bill I explained we had travelled a long way for a special birthday meal and once again expressed my disappointment at the absence of tofu after being assured that they would have plenty. The manageress apologised and handed me the card machine to pay the full amount. I also pointed out the lack of milk so that none of the party had coffee which was on Still added to the bill. On removing the coffees the final bill came to £5 more than the original amount due to the COVID discount set up on the till!!!This was a total Star Of Siam disaster and we will never return or recommend this restaurant again.

I visited on Tuesday night. This was my first visit but friends have been many times and recommended this restaurant.I was really impressed with the decor which gave it an authentic vibe, and the Covid procedures were in place and I felt very safe.The Staff were absolutely lovely, very pleasant and helpful giving advice on any questions about the food and service was quick.Some of us had the set menu and my food was delicious. There was lots of choice and between us we had the chicken satay, ribs and a dish which was little filo parcels with vegetables, salad and a dip ( I can't remember the name of the dish).For mains we had duck, beef in oyster sauce and another curry which was coconut based.Everyone said their food was delicious. For dessert I had a berry cheesecake which was perfect.We paid half price under the Eat out scheme but I would happily pay full price as the food and service was brilliant.We'll definitely be back

It's about 3 years since we paid a visit, shame on us. Went yesterday lunch time, exceptionally busy, ( possibly due to Gov Eat Out Scheme). Had to wait about 10/15 mins for a table, (booked for 1.30pm) staff pleasant and friendly.Decided to opt for the set menu for 2 persons £21.50 per person for a 4 courses.Drink orders taken and quickly received, and the starter soon followed. We love the fact you both (hubby & myself) get to taste the 4 different dishes on the Siam platter. A wait for main course but it was again worth waiting for. 4 different dishes including a stir fried vegetables, the other dishes had the selection of chicken, beef and king prawns serviced with lovely fluffy individual portions of egg fried rice. It was like where do you start, my favourite was the prawn dish with a lovely dry curry/ coconut flavoured sauce, all the dishes were served piping hot and the taste buds just went wild. The plates/dishes all went back empty. Desert was either ice cream or a choice of cheesecake. We both opted for the ginger cheesecake, light with just a very hint of ginger, a lovely different flavoured desert to complete a wonderful meal.We declined to have the coffee or jasmine tea as we were full.Once again a fabulous meal and we definately will not wait as long to go back.

Quite a while since I was at my favourite thai restaurant but it was just as wonderful. My 3 great grandchildren had it on their wish list for the summer. I had the.lunchtime specialwhich was ideal for me. I had spring rolls and massaman curry. These portions were so good I had no room for desert. The covid adherements were carried out to the letter. The first time since they opened that I have not had a hug on arriving and leaving.I'm going there tomorrow again for anniversary lunch so I will report back. By the way I took home a massaman curry and that was beautiful also xx

First visit since March social distancing was adhered to and staff seemed well organised. Food was great both of us went for Prawn hotplate with fried rice. We were served by young man whose name i didn't catch but he was very polite assisted by the resident Thai lady G i think her name is(excuse my pronouncement)The bar person Isabel was equally on the ball and equally friendly.Great meal cant wait to go again . Due to Coronavirus restrictions, the restaurant is providing takeaway and delivery services. The food is is good as ever, however the delivery service failed miserably. My order arrived half an hour late and needed to be heated in the oven before it could be eaten.When the restaurant was contacted to determine where my order was I was assured it would arrive soon and would still be hot! All wrong.Put simply, the restaurant needs to improve the delivery service or accept fewer orders, so that food arrives hot and on time.

I just had to write this review as soon as I finished my takeaway lunch. I opted to pick up my order although delivery was an option. I rang and placed my order and had it divided so I could deliver to my great grand daughter. We have both just finished the mother's Day menu. Even though I did a four miles detour mine was still really hot. The yellow curry was full of chicken and the satay and spring rolls were cooked to perfection. I really thought I was going to miss my favourite of food for lunch but thanks to Shirley and kathryn and all the staff my day has been really enjoyable. Thank you star if Siam. They are making deliveries all week so I'll be ringing. Just try and stop me . Xx
