I’ve been meaning to write this review for ages! We stumbled across this cafe on a wet Saturday afternoon. We had a lovely brew and some cake. The staff made the biggest fuss of our little girl it was just a lovely experience. Thank you so much :)

When you get a warm and friendly greeting with that all important smile you just know that you are on a winner and the staff here give you that in abundance. Socially distanced tables, lunch went down a treat, it is good to have you back.

City centre location, spacious relaxed environment, with large opening windows onto street keeping things cool on a hot day.Menu choices are good, with freshly prepared and generally healthy options, with plenty of both vegetarian and vegan choices. Our food was well presented and delicious. Service is very friendly and efficient and we considered our lunch very good value.

Our first eating out experience after shopping, since March. Feeling naturally apprehensive, we relaxed as soon as we walked through the door. We have been to The Squashed Tomato before the pandemic so are used to the welcome and excellent food.What impressed us most was the steps they had taken to keep us safe. The tables were so well spaced out and the cleaning of the tables and chairs after customers had left was really good.They must have lost money because of reduced tables but customers will remember that they put us before profit and remain loyal and keep visiting.Thank you for a lovely experience yesterday. It lifted our spirits.

Welcoming smile as soon as you enter and with not that many people out and about around the city it felt a little eerie, but we have to try to get back to some kind of normal sometime and support businesses. The staff in here do a fabulous job and the coffee/cake was just what I needed on a rainy day.

Visited this week for the first time. Menu wasn't too extensive but was a good menu and the food was excellent. They had 3 types of soup and 3 types of quiche available. The atmosphere was very relaxed and we didn't feel rushed to leave. Looking forward to going back already.

Quick and efficient service with that all important smile, relaxing atmosphere and a very good cup of coffee, what more do you want.

Me and my partner I visited here today and were very impressed. The staff were really friendly and helpful. It was very clean and decorated with a contemporary vibe. The food was delicious as were the drinks. We have never been before but would happily visit again.

Several friends and I, previously work colleagues, have been meeting regularly every month to compare family tales, and to commiserate with those still left working. We have been visiting the same café for several years but, due to the recent closure, have had to search around for a suitable venue that would match our high expectations.We found it!The Squashed Tomato easily accommodated our group, although it is wise to book if there are several of you. The menu is small, but varied, and very tasty, and they have specials that change regularly. Special dietary requirements are adequately catered for, and they have some lovely speciality teas, served loose leaf in good sized teapots.The staff really made us feel welcome, and it is obvious that they enjoy what they do. They do it so well.We are already booked in for October!

My mum and I have visited a couple of times now for breakfast. We were, on both occasions, presented with the perfect bowl of hot, creamy porridge.. completely delicious. The coffee is also superb and they offer a wide range to suit everyone. But most importantly, the staff are so helpful, so friendly and cater to all your requests without question. Nothing is too much trouble and we always feel incredibly welcomed.Thank you, for we have now found our favourite cafe in Derby!

Met for lunch at this little cafe recommended by a friend and it didn’t disappoint. Great service and the homemade quiche was lovely served with a plentiful salad. Nice and quiet and friendly - would highly recommend :)

I don’t know Derby well and was in to make a specific purchase so stopped here on impulse for brunch.

Visited with a friend and was very happy with everything. The food was absolutely delicious and the staff were very friendly and attentive. Was a nice chilled environment and didn’t feel rushed. I will definitely be returning again :-)

Small very friendly place to eat .Food is excellent, homemade by the staff you see. Interesting well thought out small menu Soup great, the option for soup with sandwich is a good lunch. Quiche with salad looks good

With so many coffee shops to choose from it is refreshing to find this delightful haven only a short walk away from the city centre. The welcome and service are excellent, the food fresh and delicious and the drinks are just right. Almost just as important, there is no intrusive music so The Squashed Tomato is the perfect place for conversation. This will be a regular venue for us from now on.

We don’t normally wander into this part of Derby, but did so today when we visited the Art Museum to see the Leonardo da Vinci prints that were being exhibited temporarily.

Relaxing atmosphere and spotlessly clean with excellent service from the staff, just the place to enjoy one of their wonderful cakes and a coffee whilst in town.

The friendliest atmosphere, fab food and the most welcoming staff. Especially Claire who is one of the reasons we love coming back so often! :) Great spot for lunch. A;so the Bacon & Brie sandwich is a must.

A wonderful friendly and welcoming café, delicious home made food with fresh ingredients. It has a homely feel and the staff are great, attentive and fun .I have breakfasts here a few times when I have visited from London and every time is it fab.

WE called in on our way into the city and had a fantastic toasted sandwich and realy smooth capachinos. All the staff were attentive and friendly. In might be a few metres from the main shopping but it is well worth the short walk.

Stopped in for lunch yesterday and brunch this morning. Friendly staff, good baby changing facilities; very clean high chairs and a very nice chocolate cake. Plenty of high windows and natural light, lovely daffodils on the tables. Gem of a place.

I was really hungry while shopping in town and went into this little cafe. The moment you stepped into the restaurant you were greeted by friendly staff. The food was amazing. I couldn’t stay for long but they could do me a take out, Stilton and cranberry quiche was absolutely amazing. Definitely would recommend to anyone visiting derby.

After an evening visiting friends in Derby and on our way back to the train station on a rainey saturday morning, we were craving a full English breakfast...and we came across this little gem. A delicious freshly cooked breakfast,great buttery piece of cut loaf toast and fab coffee...it certainly hit the spot! We will be back.

Called In with my Daughter for a late lunch. Lovely atmosphere. The menu was a brunch menu but we were also offered a lunch menu. Staff were friendly and attentive. Daughter had a toasted sandwich and I had the open sandwich. Both thoroughly enjoyed it. I saw that they had been awarded best newcomer and I can see why. Perfect all round. Will be back

The staff were extremely welcoming and friendly. The food was delicious, the open sandwiches were to die for. We had chai tea which was lovely and warming. Once ordered service was fast and we got our food and drinks in no time! Despite being rushed off their feet and new on the day, the staff were happy and friendly. Giving a very positive experience. Will 100% be going back!!

Very wet morning, waiting for the car to be serviced, museum not open till 10am, we were so pleased to find this cafe open so early.

The food was fab and the service was exceptional. Very welcoming of our child- a great place to eat!

Always a warm and friendly greeting from the staff here with that all important smile. Bacon cob and a very good cup of coffee in a relaxed atmosphere reading the paper, what a great way to start the day off.

I cannot fault this place, from the moment you walk in you are met by a cheerful member of staff.

A very pleasant place for coffee or a light meal. Ideally located in The Strand Derby it really brings a quality eating place to a lovely part of Derby. Staff are great and a warm and friendly welcome awaits. Table service is excellent.

On entering we were met and welcomed by the staff which is always a great start. Orders where taken, I had the open toasted ham and cheese sandwich, my partner had the avocado and salmon open sandwich. Both were presented beautifully and with the side salad were so tasty and filling.

After a friendly greeting I chose a homemade kiche and my wife chose smoked salmon and scrambled eggs.

We have now been twice since Squashed Tomato opened and both times have been an excellent experience. The welcome was warm and this time we were remembered form our first visit some 5 weeks previous! The feel of the place is cool and very relaxed and not crowded or hurried service. The coffee is delicious and I would also recommend the mushrooms in toast and the freshly prepared brunch tray for 2 is a lovely treat. Coming back soon...

As soon as you enter the Squashed Tomato you are greeted with a warm and friendly smile from the staff, what a great start. Restaurant is well laid out with lovely decor, menu is quite small but with enough items to please most people. Bacon sandwich was excellent, nice amount of filling on soft chunky bread and washed down with a very good cup of coffee.
