The Rose and Crown in Tendring

A beautiful little restaurant / bar in the small town of Thorpe le-sokon. Very welcoming. The staff are all amazing and really considerate to newcomers. A must visit in Thorpe le sokon.

Had the Seniors menu - lovely food. Such good value. Staff fabulous. Be nice to have whitebait back on menu. Lovely birthday for my other half. Any chance of keeping the St Austell Tribute as a house beer?

Fantastic Mothers day roast, compliments to the chef, as he even came out to see if everything was ok. Staff were really friendly and made us all feel at home. Defiantly a revisit is required.

Superb fresh food beautifully presented made for the perfect business lunch. The menu provides some great choices from sandwiches to hot meals and everything in between. I was visiting the area for a meeting but if I lived locally this would be a regular venue for me.

Ham egg and chips… chips and peas cold egg had been stuck to a pan … not happy and no discount for a bad meal

Came here for dinner on two nights while staying locally. On the first night I had lasagna and chips and my husband had the burger and fries. On the second night we shared a pizza and fries. The food was delicious and freshly cooked to order. The lady serving was friendly and welcoming. I would definitely recommend eating here if you’re staying in the area. There is plenty to choose from and it’s reasonably priced. The comments from other diners were also similar. I would recommend the biscoff cheesecake if they have it! We did go to the bell inn but there wasn’t much there to choose from and they were short staffed and very stressed so we left, best decision we made as I think this place is a real gem.

Really friendly and helpful staff. Couple of nice ales on tap. Small but decent menu. Couple of nice vegetarian options. Homemade beef burger was lovely and paired it with sweet potato fries which were excellent.

I stayed at this hotel when I went for my friend's wedding. It is definitely much better than I expected. The room was very cozy and the breakfast in the morning was delicious. I was amazed by how clean the room was when I came back after the wedding.

Stayed two nights. Breakfast was excellent. We had to leave early on the last morning so the staff made a packed breakfast for us. Staff very welcoming and friendly nothing was a problem. Well worth an other visit.

Arrived 3 members of staff told we had to wait while they chatted eventually got a table partner had to go to bar to get drinks as we waited so long partners starter 4 small prawns no value for money.The main was not a good standard and I have never had gravy that was that weak was like putting water on your meal pretty sad as on website looked really nice

No complaints about the food everyone enjoyed it. A friend of mine booked the meal and explained about an allergy that I had when she booked . I rang the rose and crown the day before my meal, I explained my food Allergy and asked if they could exclude this particular food from my salad . I all so asked if they use a dressing on my salad that was out of a bottle can they check the ingredients for my Allergen. My salad was served with a dressing and so I asked them to check ingredients on the bottle just to make sure. The allergen i was allergic to was included as one of the ingredients on the bottle. I was shocked at there carelessness. That made me feel like they just don't take it seriously even after two telephone conversations. My allergy makes me very ill but could be fatal for someone else.

Had pleasant few days here, only drawback being the extremely busy and noisy road running in front of the building

Nice pub and atmosphere, our food was average, Battered Haddock wasn't very big and was a touch chewy, chips nice, wife's Lasagne was tasty but claggy, not enough white sauce in recipe, Korean beef starter expensive for what you get, but very tasty.

We had 2 nights B & B here. Excellent. Staff were very welcoming & very efficient. the breakfast menu was varied & the food delicious. Our room was sparkling clean & well appointed. We would definitely stay again

Fantastic, service with a smile and a warm welcome. Food was delicious too. We were picky and swayed a bits from their main menu and they were very accommodating and happy to help. My Burger was one of the best I’ve had, very yummy indeed. Great value for money and spot on as other restaurants in the area had priced us out! Live local but never had dinner here before. Had a Mother's day lunch and I can say yummy had 3 courses and every course was fab roast was delicious and the roast potatoes and Yorkshire pudding was divine!!! Would definitely go back.

Came here for my birthday dinner while we were staying at the Lifehouse Hotel and Spa just down the road. Had a delicious meal (best chips i’ve had in a long time!!), staff were very friendly and efficient, and prices were very low, would definitely have payed more! Very quiet as it was a Monday night, but still had a nice atmosphere. Would definitely recommend and visit again :)

What a fabulous place to eat, I would thoroughly recommend a visit. We had a fantastic meal which was served promptly and well presented and improved greatly by the waiter, Josh, who was first class, friendly and polite. Nothing was too much trouble for him, an extremely good front man for the pub.We had a few different choices of food all very good quality and value for money.

We were staying in nearby elm farm country park at a lodge and due to having our young daughter were generally having to stay in to put her to bed in the evenings! Stayed in the area and tried all three restaurants in the village. The Rose and Crown was by far the best food offered in the village and by far the best service. The restaurant has done an excellent job with their social distancing measures. If you want good honest food and good service then come to the rose and crown and avoid the other two restaurants and their over priced, pretentious, poor quality food.

We stayed here for one night having dinner and breakfast.The room was lovely - clean, well equipped and well furnished. The only downside was it was far too hot.Dinner was fine - I had scampi and chips, my husband the house burger and we also had cheesy garlic bread and onion rings. Breakfast was included in our room rate, I went for eggs benedict and my husband the full English. Again, we have no complaints with the food - it was all cooked fine.Overall we had a lovely experience.

Booked a table in this covid friendly pub. Sat in the garden because it was a lovely sunny day. Friendly staff gave us a menu and served us our drinks. Orders taken and after a short wait nice sized portions of food were delivered. Was a reasonable price and a lovely way to spend an afternoon.

We were staying nearby and fancied pizza for dinner. Ordered a margarita and ham & pineapple. They were by far the best pizzas we have tasted anywhere, even better than our local Italian!! Do not miss out, if you in the area get yourselves a fantastic pizza from here.

I visited here last evening with a friend, it was almost empty although the weather was awful, The staff were nice an friendly, but you would hope so with just 4 people in total, everything fine with the ordering and the food showed up in a reasonable about of time, I personally had Haddock, which looked nice but the plate was missing colour, after all the first thing we do is eat with our eyes. after trying the fish it was cooked ok, but so full of grease, maybe draining after cooking for a moment would help ? Would I go back...No ......Would I recommend...No

Stayed overnight on a business trip. Booking through their website was really easy. Check-in was quick and the room/facilities were lovely. The staff couldn't have been more helpful if they'd tried and the information pack provided with the room was detailed (local taxis, bus services, shops, etc.). Gutted I didn't have a chance to try the food (checked in after dinner and checked out very early) but it looked amazing. Well situated within walking distance of the train station. Would definitely stay again if in the area.

Restaurant in the Rose and Crown is a traditional style pub. Cosy, friendly and good good. I would recommend the steak and ale pie it was delicious. My friend had the roast chicken meal.Portion size was plentiful, veggies served on a separate platter. Food was great, staff very friendly. Would highly recommend. Plus it's one of the only places open on a Sunday evening in the village. Worth a visit if you are staying at the Spa up the road.

Telephone answered whilst we waited for our drinks, she had to go and find someone, we waited. Couldn't order until 6.30 as they had run out of most things on the menu. Said she would come and take our order. Never did. We ate elsewhere.

If you need to stay in this part of Essex look no further, the Rose and Crown is the best.

We have used this b&b; a few times now when in the area visiting relatives. It’s really good, rooms smart and comfy, breakfast great. Beds comfy and quiet and staff friendly. There is a separate side entrance to the bedrooms so no need to go through the bar to get to your rooms and no issues if you get back late. Will continue to use as it’s everything we want.

Booked a 2 night stay. The room was very clean with everything that you could need. Not much of a greeting on arrival though, just taken to the room with no offer of help with bags up the fairly steep stairs, given the key with no words of welcome etc. We did not eat in the restaurant apart from breakfast which was ok. Fresh fruit would have been a nice option. I think to call it fine dining is probably wishful thinking - it's pub grub. Also the bedroom walls are a bit thin! Very restricted on site parking. Also surprised to get an extra £20 charge on my bill although this may have been in the small print.

We stayed here for two nights whilst reviewing the area for a potential move. Whilst the pub wasn’t very busy the dining was doing really well. Mainly because the food is very good. They do Pizzas and I asked for extra garlic and chilli and got both. The room we stayed in was very good, clean and had a good sound system. Well worth staying.

Our experience of the Rose and Crown was positive, right from the welcome and reassurance of receptionist +++ Phoebe as we phoned to make a booking.

OK, so we were the only people in the place at about 3.30pm on a Saturday afternoon. Drinks were fine and we chose to sit at the bar in the hope that we might talk to one of the staff members and learn a little more about Thorpe le Soken, having never been there before. Instead one of the employees moaned very loudly about some other customers (presumably who had now left) and she went on and on, very rudely and loud to the point where we decided to go and sit somewhere else not to have to listen to her public ranting. We only went in for a quiet drink but instead had to listen to her banging on. Very inappropriate and unprofessional when customers were there I think. We left quickly.

Went along with my 3 year old grandson to the Easter Kids Kitchen, he had a fantastic time. Easter Nests, cake decorating & an Easter Egg hunt . Had a lovely lunch whilst we were there x

arrived and noticed rather busy up rear end of the restaurant. Looked like mourners as all dressed in black. Hence asked one of the three girls behind the bar if open for lunch for general public she said yes.. And we would have to sit up the end as you come in. Thinking about it there was no greeting from these girls just a stare. Mind you they were chatting. We sat and waited and eventually one girl came over no rush about it. Asked what did we want to drink? I asked what fish it was today as it only said fish of the day/ Girl said I think it is cod I asked can you check for me. Off she went husband ordered a small white wine up came a large one. Girl back said it is cod. Somehow did not feel confident about her answer so ordered a Prawn Cocktail. Husband ordered the pie of the day. We waited ages and these three girls were in and out of the wake party and we did not exist. Hope they got a big tip as this clearly is what they were after. There mind clearly was not on the job of serving non wake customers. You would have thought with three girls one could have been told to service the non wake customers leaving two to see to the wake guests. Out came our food husbands plate was stone cold with a hot meal on it. My Prawn Cocktail had brown bread cut in to four triangles the thinnest bread you could imagine. No butter I asked any butter off she went into where the wake party was being held and came back with two little butters named Kerry Maid it tasted awful when I looked it said vegetable spread on it. I called out can I have a side plate as do not want to lay my bread down on the table to butter it, Girl came back with side plate and I asked for salad cream ? Told no do not have that have mayo so settled for that. This Prawn Cocktail was the worst one have ever eaten tasted horrible. Had to call out for the bill although girl walked passed us umpteen times in order to speak on the phone up our end as it was less noisy. Not once did anyone come and ask if the meal was alright so when she came with the bill I asked are you new here she said no. Been here 5 years but we do have a new chef. I told her that Prawn Cocktail was horrible. What is wrong with it she asked? I said does not taste right. I will tell her our chef she said. By now the wake party were starting to kiss each other goodbye so as we were the only other customers there the chef could not have been busy so if she was told she never bothered to come out and speak to me about my complaint. Yet again employ young staff who do not have a clue how to deal with complaints.. We will never return here again it was so slap dash and appalling. From entering to leaving. Can they not find staff who know what customer service is? As it was obviously beyond their capabilities to see to the wake as well as service the general public why not shut the place to the general public? Just greed to try to run both and the public suffered .

We took a friend to this pub for a Sunday roast dinner at 6pm after what can only probably be described a busy Mothering Sunday lunchtime for the pub restaraunt. Despite this the staff were really friendly, efficient and were attentative to the right amount. Two of us had the Roast Beef and the other the the Pork Roast. All the meals were of excellent quality and very a good portion size as well. The same applied to the deserts(Jam rollypolly) in every respect. The pub has a nice warm atmosphere in every way. Cannot fault in anyway and will certainly return.Well done everyone at the Rose and Crown.

We had booked but no need as it was a very very quiet Thursday lunchtime. Not surprisingly, perhaps, the service was excellent - very attentive and helpful. The food was very tasty and generous portions - too full after starters and mains to find room for any dessert! A slightly strange inconsistency with those mains that came with vegetables and those that did not. The prices were good but only because we did not need to supplement any of them.

Often thought would like to try here so did. Not disabled friendly at all steps everywhere out the front to get inside. Once inside only saw one member of staff and she was doing all ,Taking orders delivering food. serving drinks, so waited a while before being acknowledged . Husband ordered the meat pie said very nice but swimming in gravy far too much which made the meat wet. Why not put the gravy in a small jug and allow customers to put their own gravy on their food. I had fish and chips very nice and I ordered a diet coke rather expensive I thought at £2.35 for a small bottle. Husband had wine said nice. Service was rather slow to place your order and then we timed it 30 minutes to the table, Need more staff that's for sure. Not sure if would go back, As plenty around to chose from.
