I went to the Hilton with my partner's family for a peaceful meal out. Upon arrival we were greeted by two lovely waitresses who showed us to our table. They found us a nice table with a lovely garden view. However, the restaurant was dirty and in much need of refurbishment. After a reasonable start, it was a shock to find out that we had to pay an extra £2 to have ingredients taken OUT or be made separate from the dish specified in the menu. For instance, I wanted my ribs without the cantonese sauce so I could dip them, rather than getting sticky hands. An absolute sham! The manager was also very rude to his staff in front of customers. He even called one of them a "dreadful person"! A man was even left waiting for his soup for forty minutes whilst he gossiped with his management and kitchen team. This is not a positive environment for customers or staff. I shall not be returning.

Looking for a bit of a change to the norm we decided to venture the short distance to the Mandarin for Sunday dinner. We booked ahead and when we arrived our table was set and ready for us.The Buffett menu has so much choice and with everything made fresh and to order you really can't go wrong! Our children are huge fans of the ribs, chicken wings and satay chicken - as were we!! There was just enough room after what can only be described as the best starter banquet for a nice curry, which was flavoursome and very moorish! The only downside is that the drinks are a tad expensive, however the value for money with the food makes up for it.We will definitely be back!

We've been to the mandarin a number of times & we've noticed a decline in the recent months, in service, food & quantity. Each time we love the prawn crackers but time & time again the simplest thing to cook is undercooked making them (on occasions) inedible & the sharpness has caused small abrasions in my mouth. Each time I ask for them they've either undercooked them or they're lack crispness. I also have the mixed veg but just recently it seems to have no flavour. On the good side the spare ribs & curry sauce are to die for & that's the only reason I use them. Please note if ordering a sauce in a separate container then you are charged (in my opinion) quite excessively. We asked 2 of the meals for the sauce to be separate & we where charged £2. I appreciate there is an extra cost but that is daylight robbery. Talking of which a can of coke is either £1:20 or more so save yourself some money & call at Tesco express or Aldi before you go and get 4 for £2. Why do I go there if there's so many issues, I JUST LOVE YHE RIBS & CURRY SAUCE. It's not all bad.

The interior is ok with nicely laid out tables but nothing posh. food was fine but you can tell it is very unhealthy because i got ever so bloated, it repeated on me all night and the salt content must have been very high because i was thirsty for hours afterwards. the menu is large so plenty of choices. the service was ok, all very young local staff members - one didn't even know what soy sauce was!!!!!! the food did take longer than expected to come out but we didn't mind.

We sat down, in a very empty (we were the only table) restaurant and were quickly asked about drinks and given menus. Some of us wanted our starters with our mains as a side, (there was 4 of us) we asked politely and got told that this would not be possible and that if we did that they could rush the mains out after our starters so there wasn't much time in between. Our mains arrived 30 minutes after our starters, although we had asked for them together. 2 of us had our mains, about 10 minutes later the other half of the tables food came. We forgot to order a side of chips so asked for them when the first few mains came out, they arrived 15 minutes later. The staff were very awkward and unhelpful throughout our whole experience which made it very uncomfortable. The service and staff is a shame as the food was really nice at reasonable prices.

Having just returned from visiting the Mandarin Chinese restaurant at Hilton it is not an experience we will be repeating in a hurry. The restaurant has all the appearances of being run on a shoestring - from the peeling wallpaper, dirty paintwork, the paper table covering to the lack of finger bowls provided after eating spare ribs, not yo mention the grubby baskets used to serve prawn crackers (immediately returned to be refilled for other tables once eventually collected from our table with no effort made to clean/wipe them). The salt cellar I requested was too greasy to handle and the chair I sat on was 'dodgy' to say the least! Service was slow with dishes arriving after long pauses. Food portions were small although the food was adequate. Nothing we ate stood out as particularly tasty and definitely smacked of being frozen or from a jar. When our main courses arrived we were left to use our side plates (previously used to eat our spring rolls on). A plus for the restaurant would be its friendly, courteous staff although there seems to be a training short fall. An example would be having finished our meal to be asked if everything was okay - had we been asked earlier we could have pointed out that we needed larger plates for the main course. For the prices being charged we definitely expected a little more care and food! Sorry Manderin, just not good enough.

We have been regular customers at the Mandarin Hilton for several years now and have never had a bad meal. The Sunday and early part of the week Buffet Menu is excellent value and is served to the table with a good range of options on the Menu. The House Red Wine is very good value and tastes much more expensive than it is.We also use the takeaway service when we want to dine at home and have always found the meals well prepared with adequately sized portions. Some reviewers have remarked on the lack of atmosphere as it is often quiet but for my Wife and I this is a bonus - we do not always want to sit near a loud table. I am at a loss to understand why the place is not bursting at the seams with customers as James and his Staff are brilliant. We have also attended the Chinese New Year events and the Harvest Festivals and again have found the food superb - naturally these events are very popular .We have taken many of our friends to the Mandarin over the years and all have been impressed as we are after every visit.I

Having decided to order a family take away for delivery we chose the Mandarin. The delivery was prompt and all seemed to be going well. On serving the food the complaints started. The crispy sweet and sour chicken and garlic chilli chicken were both covered in 'soggy, greasy batter'. The singapore chow mein lacked any kind of spice or flavour, the mushroom curry was 'watery'. The egg fried rice was 'clumped' together and served in lumps. In all the meal was 'terrible'. As i was feeding 4 young children i did not have the luxury of complaining at that time and waiting for a further delivery. I contacted the restaurant the next day with my concerns and received a lengthy 'e' mail from them about how there food is "never as good as a take away" (perhaps had they mentioned this i would have gone to an alternative supplier). They said they would take matters up with the chef and they hoped i would order from them again! There was no offer of any recompense or replacement for this disastrous meal as they had not examined it! In short avoid this establishment for take away meals as this was an awful waste of over £40, i might as well have cut the middle man out and thrown my money in the bin!

Called in on spec for a meal returning from Birmingham, Onkly two other tables occupied, although it was early (6:15). Quickly shown to a table and given menus. Drinks soon appeared. We ordered the set meal for two - at £16:90 a head it IS pricey. Soup soon appeared; it was good. Followed by dim-sums in lettuce. A little 'soggy' - not crisp as it should be. Lettuce also dripping with water - had not been blotted dry. Bright three main course dishes - all very nice. BUT mains were served into small dishes. These were TOO small to get much in; consequence a messy table cloth! We didn't finish any of the dishes. When they came to clear up, they were going to just takle it away and presumably dump the residue. We asked if they would pack it up as a take-away - which they did, without demur. BUT if this had been Canada they would not need to have been asked! It has to be said that the place lacked any sort of atmosphere; this may have been due to the lack of patronage, but there were no oriental staff in evidence either. Can't fault the servers though. AS this is the only Chinese restaurant within an 8 mile radius, we would go again - but not often.

We were staying locally and asked our very helpful hostess where the best Chinese food around Hilton could be found. She thoroughly recommended the Mandarin and we decided to try them for a takeaway. Having arrived in a fairly busy car park we were expecting a bit of a wait for our food but were actually served as soon as we walked in & the whole order arrived in around 10 mins or less plus free prawn crackers to accompany it & we were offered more complimentary ones while we'd been waiting. The food was perfect; prawn toast, mini spring rolls, sweet & sour prawn balls, prawn foo yung & lamb slices with ginger and spring onions. Not at all greasy, generous portions, very reasonable prices, couldn't get much better. We then booked in to the restaurant side for a proper dinner the following night. We received great service, attentive but not harassing, helpful, informative & professional. Yet again the food was amazing and beautifully artistically presented & the expert serving of sake at the correct temperature was a lovely touch too. This was our 10th wedding anniversary celebration dinner & it definitely didn't disappoint at all! Would recommend the Mandarin to anyone near or far for either take away or eating out for a special occasion and we'll definitely be going again.

My boyfriend and I visited one Saturday evening and there were plenty of other people around which created a nice atmosphere. We were greeted by a friendly waiter who showed us to our seats and was very attentive all evening for drinks orders etc... We ordered the dim sum platter for two, but at £6 a person we thought it was a little sparse. The main was of a good size and very tasty, although the rice portion for two was a little on the small side. The bottled beer is very cheap, we had 2 Beijing Golds at £2 each a bottle! The paper tablecloths on the table covering the lovely fabric ones made the overall image of the place a little more tacky than it was, for just a little extra washing costs they could make it a really fancy looking place. Would recommend this to anyone, as the food was good- they also do a takeaway service which i have used before which is probably more value for money- but as Chinese restaurants go, it was reasonably priced and very yummy.

From the moment we arrived at the Mandarin we felt valued customers. A real welcome from the staff without being over the top. Great choice of food - the scollops are particularly nice and there are specials which are out of the ordinary for a chinese style restaurant. We have eaten at the Mandarin regularly and have attended their Chinese New Year and Midsummer Evenings - complete with Dragon Dancers, fireworks, lots of lights and a brilliantly devised set menu.I would recommend James Lee's establishment

Nice place if you like Chinese food. Good value service and quality. The staff I think are the owners and they were very good. Certainly worth a visit.

On a wet and cold Friday in December, four of us went to the Mandarin. Within 10 minutes of sitting down, our waiter asked us if we were ready to order, which we weren't because we were too busy chatting. Two minutes later, he was back, and then two more minutes later he was back again. Usually this would have been irritating, but weirdly it was quite endearing?! We fell in love with Billy's style (the waiter/owners brother we think) and as the night continued we enjoyed his enigmatic ways. Feeling festive we ordered the Christmas banquet and the house champagne. Our food was delicious.... all four courses! All in all a very good night; great food, atmosphere, service and value for money. Will definitely return!
