The Kitchen in Christchurch

We went for lunch at The Kitchen yesterday for my birthday and loved every minute! The restaurant was beautiful decorated for Christmas and has a lovely relaxed atmosphere. All of the staff were friendly and everyone made a point of coming over to say Happy Birthday which was lovely of them (and brought over a birthday dessert with a candle after which was a lovely touch). We both had the pork chop for our main course and it was absolutely delicious, perfectly cooked and a taste sensation. We had dessert which was also delicious. We absolutely loved our meal at The Kitchen and will happily come back another time, a really beautiful place and meal. 5*

This was the first time that I have had the opportunity of visiting The Kitchen with a group of friends. Some had mentioned that the afternoon tea had been disappointing, but the Festive Lunch looked delicious and a great way to kick off Christmas. Unfortunately I was decidedly underwhelmed. The Service by our waitress was excellent however. It wasn't until I got home that I realised the Amuse Bouche had not been served! My starter of roast butternut squash and sage risotto was very nice. The Main; Roasted Herb-Crusted salmon, had no herb-crust! The portion size was good but I was completely underwhelmed. A dish like this could have been served anywhere. All my friends that had this dish remarked the same. The Festive Kitchen Apple was nice. The time between each course was too long. The restaurant was busy but we were there at 1:00 and didn't leave until 4:30 and even then I had to get up and go to pay. It was a good job the company was excellent! I will, however mention briefly the fact that one of our ladies waited a long time for her dessert. In fact, we had nearly finished by the time hers arrived. It was clear the apple compote had been put into the microwave as when she touched the jug it was red hot and the compote already on the apple burned her mouth! This was raised to the waitress and then to the Maître d'. The way this was handled was completely unacceptable. Not even an apology. However, I will let her take this up with management. In finality, it is unlikely that I will return.

A fabulous lunch at the Kitchen with James Martin teaching his culinary skills in the background. I had the most excellently cooked pork chop which was a delight for my taste buds and my friend had the curry, another taste explosion. Its at the higher end of the lunch cost scale, but the ambiance, service and food more thaqn make up for it. 5 stars from me.

Had a superb lunch at The Kitchen today with my wife and son. The food was outstanding and the service was perfect - friendly, unobtrusive and with immaculate timing. Many thanks to the manager, Tim and to Tom and Bonnie for their combined efforts in making this a truly memorable experience.

Went for a birthday lunch with the family and it was fabulous. The ambience was great and the food even better. Tim the manager was brilliant and super professional throughout. The waiting staff Bonnie and Tom gave us everything we needed along with plenty of smiles 😀 The birthday plate with a candle topped it off nicely. Couldn't be more happy with my experience. Went to lunch at The Kitchen today and it was lovely. The food was delicious and the manager Tim looked after us brilliantly and the service from Bonnie and Tom was excellent. We had a thoroughly nice time, many thanks to everyone, especially Tim.

The Kitchen is by far our favourite restaurant locally, the food is excellent, the staff are excellent, we cannot fault it, we will be back soon. We can say no more than wee feel it represents.great value when you take into account the whole package.

We had pizzas & they were super; fresh, simple (and filling!). Service friendly & attentive. Place modern designed. All good.

The place was an experience I'll never forget. Walking around the grounds was splendid enough. They seem to have thought of everything. There was disabled parking in the front of the restaurant. We were greeted at the door ,escorted to our table,never rushed to choose what we ate. Cheryl our waitress was caring, knowledgeable about all the menus, courteous she even arranged for all the chefs to sign my placemat. Super time was had by all. Food was fab as well.

The food that we had was very delicious and cooked to a good standard. The flatbread of the day had lots of flavour and was a very good combination of ingredients. The fish goujons (on the children’s menu) were fresh and to a very nice quality! The moving mountains burger was very flavourful as was the butter chicken curry! The chips were thick, chunky, soft and fluffy on the inside, and very tasty! Presentation was also very good, it made everything look delectable - it was! The service was professional and food was served within reasonable time. The ambience and atmosphere in the restaurant is also quite nice: there’s music playing lightly in the background which helps to establish some liveliness. It feels causal but nice and smart at the same time! This place did not disappoint and I would happily recommend! This was not my first time here and it will not be my last, the food here is always perfect!

Dined on my own after attending James Martin’s Cookery School which was excellent. Review to follow. Wanted the Gin and Tonic Prawns but sadly no prawns were available so had the Heritage Tomato and Burrata Salad. The dish was delicious my only criticism was the tomatoes were straight from the fridge or cool room and as a result did not have the opportunity to show their flavour to its best. I had the fish and chips which were wonderful, the fish fresh and large beautiful flakes of fish in a crispy well seasoned batter. Chips, properly made and a naughty but tasty treat. James Martin’s own label white and red wines were delicious and much better quality than some “ famous” wine varieties. Had to move away from my window table as the air con was fierce and the staff could not alter it sadly but that is a fairly minor point. Well trained professional staff…….well done all.

We took my mum for a special birthday meal at the Kitchen at Chewton Glen. My mum is 88 and is quite selective with what she eats. We had booked in advance and from the moment we arrived the customer service was first class. The head waiter and allocated waitress could not do enough for us, explaining the menu and understanding my mum’s dietary wishes. Our selection of food was so good that diners at an adjoining table commented and selected what we had ordered. The food was brilliant, I had probably the best cooked steak ever, my wife was overwhelmed by her food but best of all my mum had the fish dish and though she thought she couldn’t eat it all enjoyed every Morsel. We had a shared desert to finish and would highly recommend what was an awesome but very personal dining experience. We will return and thank you to all at The Kitchen Chewton Glen

After a good reception in the main house, we had a ride in the shuttle bus down to the Kitchen. This started off well but went downhill faster than a Ferrari!!!! When ordering the waitress knew nothing about the dishes, she went away to ask what rare breed the burger was, and came back with the answer “cow”, not even beef!!!! A question about the soft shelled crab was dismissed…. We chose the Cornish Sardines on sourdough bread, two tiny Sardines were overwhelmed with the chutney sauce, bread was black one side and barely touched the griddle the other side. The mains came, no option for how the Lamb was cooked was offered and we asked for a bottle of red wine…oops, eventually when it came with an apology for it being half way through our dish. We avoided pudding for further disappointment as whilst watching the “kids” in the kitchen one particular chef thought picking your nose and eating it while on public view is acceptable!!!! The ladies toilets were unclean and not monitored by the looks of it. We sadly left very disappointed by the whole experience and that the local Beefeater restaurant would win hands down on all counts!!! Our waitress was very pleasant but lacked the professional training and experience I would expect in a restaurant of this level. At the end of the evening it felt like we were in the way of clearing up and going home, this was 10.20 in the evening. We feel really sad to have to write a negative review about our experience. Too relaxed and no attention to detail.

The food here is always good and it’s fun to watch the kitchen actually prepare your food. On this occasion our waitress - Wallace - noticed that my son needed some extra attention and made sure to ask if we wanted the music turned down. It was a lovely piece of personal attention which we really appreciated. Lots of places have great food and an open kitchen but a personal experience is rare and the kitchen delivered.
