We had a lovely morning / afternoon walking. To finish our walk we had a lovely lunch in Fox House. The staff were very friendly and welcoming to us and our dog. I asked for a carrot for him (odd request I know) but the girl sorted it. The little things make a big difference. The Food was so good, we enjoyed both the starter and main. Definitely recommend after a good walk.

We came here last night for a meal and if I’m honest we were very disappointed. First of all my husband orderd a ribeye steak which in our opinion it was NOT a ribeye. It didn’t look like one and looked more like a rump, it was very tough and chewy. When my husband mentioned it the lady who took our bill said it could have been a suppplier issue or a mistake 😳 Secondly I ordered the lamb kebabs which I’ve had before, usually the skewer is really hot keeping the meat warm, last night it wasn’t hot and my lamb was luke warm. Also it comes with a slaw but all I got was a mound of pineapple. Thirdly the restaurant was quiet but we were seated in the dog area which I wasn’t impressed with as we didn’t have a dog, we spent £67 and wasn’t impressed. 😡

Generally very disappointing, both the food and the service left a lot to be desired It was my daughter’s 40th birthday, no welcome or attempt to make the evening special. The service was exceptionally slow, the food was also incredibly disappointing. One member of our party booked fish and chips, which looked nice, but the chips were cold. I had the king prawn skewer….there were 5 tiny prawns, in their shell and overcooked so difficult to remove from their shells, again accompanying chips were cold. Another member of our party had the chicken burger, which he described as decidedly average and the chicken was overcooked. No one offered us sweets and I stood for 15 minutes waiting to pay the bill, several members of staff walked past me and no one asked if I needed help…I had to practically pin a member of staff down to pay the bill! Lovely location and super for a drink outside, but I wouldn’t recommend dining there, very expensive and not what we expected at all.

The service was amazingly horrible. We walked-in on Sunday lunch and we had to wait almost two hours for our food💀💀💀 They never serve food. If you are lucky, you will get your food but otherwise you need to fight. It wasn’t only our experience. people seating next table to us also had to go shout at kitchen to get the food. So if you don’t get food in 30min, no matter how the pub is full you should go ask and shout to kitchen for your food. After an hour waiting we go and ask to server but that red hair women just told us our food go to kitchen just 20mins ago and just irresponsibly leave. So i found another male server and asked again and find out that our food was even not in the queue. That 20min food was someone else’s food. Amazing! So we end up waiting around 1 hour and 45 mins. Finding a kind server to look for your food is customer’s another responsibility in this pub. For the highlight the food was cold! But we just eat it and leave the pub. Never go for food in this restaurant. Also beef sunday roast is not good. Rather go for pork. Amazing time wasting for customer who spend over 50£ here.:)

I visited today for Sunday lunch and WOW it was amazing! I was very kindly welcomed into the fox house by a young man called Billy, and although all tables were fully booked (the place was heaving!) Billy managed to help me find a table outside in the lovely sunshine! I had a sunday trio which was absolutely beautiful! the wait for food wasn’t long at all to say how busy the place was! all the new staff were attentive and kept the tables cleaned ready for the next person, a lovely lady called Paige served me at the bar when i ordered my food and drink, she was absolutely delightful and was so helpful explaining the menu items! i just want to add, there was a very rude customer on the next table to me, but the staff handled the situation really well, they’re all credit to the business. i look forward to my next visit!

I don't leave negative feedback very often but the staff at The Fox House were a long way from their A game today. Food took a long time to arrive and one of our group didn't even receive their meal. He was given complimentary chips and onion rings. The chips arrived first for which he requested tomato sauce which never arrived. The onion rings arrived a long time later and were burnt. This was amongst a few other service related irritations. I've been a few times before and it's always been great but not today. It's not as if they were too busy either. Just arrived at The Fox House on a lovely Wednesday afternoon for a late lunch only to be told that it's bookings only, we can't have any food. There is barely anybody here, it's a Wednesday afternoon when most people are at work, so it's not busy or booked up. What do you mean I can't order food? What is the point of a countryside pub if you can't sit down and order some food? Defeats the purpose does it not? There was a chef walking about front of house so he obviously wasn't busy. Utterly bizarre policy. I won't be coming back, the only use this place has is as a car park.

Myself and 2 others went to The Fox House after a long walk. I am coeliac and have to eat gluten free. They have a very confusing allergen menu, it lists which allergens are in which dish but it also states that you need to check how everything is cooked. I checked how food is cooked and they cook everything in the same fryers and on the same grills so there is no safety for anyone with dietary requirements. It would be better if it said on the menus and on the website that they can't cater for any dietary requirements safely. It would save everyone a lot of time. The service was very mixed. The first woman I spoke to at the bar gave awful service. She was really miserable and unhelpful. I asked for our very dirty Table to be cleaned and no one ever came. Looking around outside all the tables were dirty, all with glasses, cups and plates on, and customers having to push them to the side. A second person I spoke to behind the bar was more helpful and explained that nothing was safe to eat. He is the only reason I am giving the place 2 stars. It's only really suitable to go here for a quick drink. Which is such a shame.

We attended today at lunchtime which proved to be a very disappointing visit. We were seen to our table that we’d booked almost immediately and left with menus. Our order was taken around 20/25 minutes later. My husband ordered well done steak but it arrived more rare so he informed a member of staff about it. It arrived identical to the initial steak so we decided to leave and my husband complained to the manager who was very apologetic and he gave my meal (chicken burger which was lovely) for free, including our drinks too which was a nice gesture but the whole experience was disappointing so we will not be returning anytime soon.

I'm reviewing based on our experiences with the food. We were charged £85 for two adult meals and two children's meals, including desserts and one alcoholic drink. The food was far below standard of the bill. Far below. After our meal, I asked what in the menu was actually home made and was told that basically none of it was. The signature burger had the quality of reconstituted meat. The chips were uniform oven chips. The beef brisket that should have topped the burger would barely fill a teaspoon. The pork belly was... Fine... But obviously the 'crackling' was from a packet and not from the actual cooked pork. The sticky toffee pudding was bland with a skin of sauce on top. None of this ready-made-mass-produced-reheated garbage is right for the pub. The choice on tap was god awful too, just a range of weak lagers... And Guinness. Mitchell's and Butler, owners of Vintage Inns (owners of FH) also have Toby and Harvester under their umbrella. I have a suspicion that the food here comes from the same factory as those other brands where quality and craftsmanship take a back seat to uniformity and replicability. FH is a hiker's and biker's pub. We've spent hours in the Peak District. We want to be welcomed by a roaring fire and lashings of frothy ale. The food should come out glowing, radiant with love. What you get is small print on a plate. You get a graph of maximised profit. The kitchen serves the headline graphic from M&Bs homepage - its shareprice. It's £2.25 right now. I doubt that Vintage cares what a good British pub should be and wouldn't ever try to return FH to its former glory. A fully staffed, fully equipped kitchen of chefs... Shareprice doesn't need quality. Shareprice doesn't care for your memories of good pubs. Shareprice only needs to reduce operating costs.

Came here for a drink at lunch time. Ordered 2 drinks & a bowl of olives. Wasn't overly busy, but very short staffed, and all staff looked stressed, so gave benefit of the doubt and waited 45 minutes before saying anything about the olives not arriving. Went inside & told staff who apologised and said they would get them shortly. Waited a further 20 minutes & despite waitress passing our table several times to take other people's orders, they didn't bring ours so requested a refund. Wouldn't usually complain about something like this however not the first time I've visited here and this has happened. Been several times and always have a problem with excessive wait times 1.5hrs+ , wrong order or just like this time, no food turning up and having to get a refund. Not really a fault with the staff on that day, more a management failure to staff properly. ALWAYS understaffed! However will probably return to be disappointed yet again due to great location. Only thing going for it as prices are crazy and food (when it comes) just OK.

May I preface by saying this has been a pleasant stay and location but it appears management is trying to prevent that... We arrived on our first night to be informed that hot water was unavailable, which is pretty paramount considering we have a wedding to attend the next morning. Thankfully, the amazing Kal was on it and offered an alternative room at The Castle Inn, but before we could decide, the water was fixed post dinner so we were able to resume our stay and the dinner bill was kindly waived - thank you again Kal! The following morning we were perplexed as to the delays in the kitchen for breakfast? Unfortunately, it resulted in us being a little late to the church service, so more Deliver-boo as opposed to Deliveroo then I suppose. This delay in breakfast service sadly continued throughout the day. Fortunately, we were able to use it as an ice breaker when conversing with other guests. On our last day whilst contemplating our review of Fox Inn our mind was made up when we were hounded by a barking German Shepherd on the way back to our room. The owner whom is staff was surprisingly casual despite the constant bounding and barking at us as opposed to apologising for the sudden scare! Thank you for the send off, much appreciated! Silly us for not being familiar with your dogs. Perhaps we should've went straight to The Castle Inn?

Really great food, let down by extremely poor service. Service was painfully slow throughout. We’d been there for 1 hour and 45 minutes before I had to flag down a server just to order dessert to go. About 10 minutes later, we were asked to move to the reception area as they needed the table. It’s frustrating, as we’d have happily been in and out much quicker if service had been more efficient. Starters alone took around 40 minutes to arrive. Such a shame, because the food and venue were genuinely excellent.

We went to The Fox House for a lunch to celebrate my mum’s 70th birthday. Admittedly, it was busy with the restaurant appearing to be at its capacity when we arrived at 13:00 for our booking. We decided to place our starters, mains and drinks order at the same time as it took around 40 minutes for the waitress to take our order. My wife ordered a rose wine but received a white wine. We decided to not pass comment based on how long it took to receive our drinks order and my wife enjoyed the wine irrespective. The food was very, very good, presented nicely, on lovely crockery. There was a nice sized portion for all dishes ordered. We placed our dessert order following our main course. All but one dessert was served. It took a further 30 minutes and two requests for the Sticky Toffee Pudding to arrive, by which time everyone had eaten and was ready to leave. The restaurant manager kindly reduced the bill by £30 and did not charge us for the late dessert. They had respectfully admitted their shortfall which I find honourable. In summary: Lovely meal which took too long. I’ll definitely return as it is a great pub and restaurant. Unfortunately it just wasn’t as streamlined as I’d have expected. If you’re in no rush, then you’ll enjoy yourself thoroughly.

A saving grace of a pit stop during our hike. The fireplace was lovely and the service was very quick. Staff were so friendly as well! Highly recommend!

Six old friends met up for a lovely long leisurely lunch today. Been visiting this place for well over fifty years, an amazing place in a lovely location. Great food and drink all delivered to the table by our lovely waitress Jesse who was a delight to meet. Till the next time.

I stayed here for three nights with my partner, overall the stay in the hotel room was nice it was clean the bed was comfy except the pillows a bit hard for our liking and we had neck pain every morning, unfortunately the service and food was just not great. The service overall was disappointing and throughout the stay we felt it got worse and put a bit of a damper on our holiday, the food service was very slow throughout, the only time we had decent service was at the start of our stay as we got our food quite quick but it was because we were the only people there for breakfast, the full English was okay but you couldn’t even get a knife through the croissants they were rock hard, in the evening the service was fast when we sat near the bar and just ordered the food and drink by going up to the bar but when sat in the restaurant the service was very slow one night we sat for almost an hour waiting to have our empty plates taken and dessert order taken it then took over half an hour for dessert which was just a brownie and ice cream the next night was a bit quicker but when we arrived the server at the front desk appeared annoyed there was little greeting and when ever she was serving us it just wasn’t very polite. we asked for dessert menus we seemed to be forgotten the person we asked walk past us twice, after we still hadn’t had any menus in the end we decided to skip dessert and just go back to the room, when we asked for the bill for the dinner, I explained I had a voucher without asking the server took my phone from my hand and walked off with it to scan the code she didn’t ask or say she would need to scan the phone at the till. The last morning we had a different server who was lovely and very attentive breakfast was quicker with service but again we were the only people. It was shame it was our last morning that we felt we finally had good service at breakfast. I think I was stay here again I would pay to have food included I the stay would eat else where

Booked a table for 9 of us for lunch on Saturday, and it couldn’t have gone better. Vicki took my booking and helped me update it seamlessly, even accommodating very particular dietary requirements with ease. Welcoming to muddy boots and dogs as-well! Fantastic place, staff and food and the most amazing smells of wood fires.

Went for a Sunday Roast. Food was excellent, compliments to the chef. Front of house staff unfriendly, and proper grumpy which let it down.. kind of ruined the overall experience so only 3 out of 5.

Booked a table in advance were given a secluded table with broken heating in 3 degree weather, the fire door was constantly left open right next to table. Despite asking for a resolution or just to be somewhere warmer, no solution or meaningful apology was granted. The food was nice and we enjoyed all the dishes, however even accepting the busy nature of the venue, the service was very poor and we had to chase waiters around to be served…from sitting down, it took nearly three hours to receive mains and desserts. One of our friends was labelled a problem by management despite only asking for a proper answer to these glaring service issues which is frankly unacceptable in a dining environment.

Have come here for years, used to be the perfect place for a post climb pint. But in the last few years, the quality of pretty much everything has massively dropped. Food coming out cold, drinks over priced, managers blatantly not caring. This isn’t due to the bar staff or the chefs, this is clearly shoddy management making quick money grabs rather than maintaining quality control. We’d left it the first few times the poor service started happening, thinking it was just a once off. It is not. It is consistently poor from all aspects. Think it’s time, unfortunately to find a new pub. I will no longer be recommending, I will now in fact recommend not going. This pub has been ruined by bad management. Good luck to the rest of the staff on this sinking ship.

Disappointed would be an understatement! Having booked in advance for a table of 8, we arrived promptly to be seated a cold annexe of the building. There was nothing done to make our experience more pleasurable apart from the duty manager saying "we can cancel your food if you don't want to sit here". Totally unacceptable that they would rather turn away 8 customers than try and find a solution. When we asked if there was any alternative heating solution the answer was a straight no. Throughout the meal, she inconsiderately kept leaving the back door open causing the temperature to drop even further. Having sat down for 15 mins, no drinks order was taken and we were forgotten about in this cold, dingy part of the pub. Only when I managed to get the attention of the manager, she came to take our order. Her demeanour was off from the beginning, bad energy and a face to match. She took our drinks order, whilst telling one member of the party to speak up. The drinks arrived after a long period, whilst forgetting a simple glass of water. The food arrived at different times for the party, which I guess is understandable as it was a busy Saturday lunchtime. Apart from not having certain items on the menu, when I made enquiries she seemed annoyed to be asked, which was later confirmed in a conversation after the meal. I believe this woman needs some serious customer service training if she is going to be working the public and should understand that a customer is able to ask questions and shouldn't feel put out by doing so. The meal was mediocre at best, nothing that reflects the prices that they charge. Following our meal we ordered desserts and coffee together. They too came out separately, and at this point we were ready to leave. I went to speak to the duty manager to tell her to cancel the desserts, where she decided it was a good idea to rudely insult me. I quote " I could tell from when you walked in, that you were going to be a problem". Not referring to any member of the party but me, she mentioned that I asked too many questions, I explained to her I'm entitled to ask questions, I'm not being funny but if she can't answer basic questions to a customer without feeling aggrieved then she should not managing anything. I felt her comment was rude and inappropriate, I felt that she targeted me based on my skin colour and that she be spoken to about her actions as this is totally unacceptable. She then provided me with £30 off the meal as a way of shutting me up. At this point we were all fed up and ready to leave. Please avoid this place if you value your self respect and your hard earned money. We will not be returning.

I took shelter here on a stormy walk through Padley, and the staff were incredibly accommodating on a busy night and served us great meals and drinks. Especially our server Jess, and the manager that managed to squeeze us in.
