The pub is in a great location for incorporating into a walk in the peaks. The food was really nice.

Visited as a larger group for Sunday lunch, lovely meal and friendly service. It’s also based in a fantastic location, which allowed us to have a brilliant walk after and burn off the calories of the indulgent sticky toffee pudding.

Went for Sunday lunch with friends. Arrived a little early but we were shown to our table straight away. The waitress attended and took our order and our starters arrived shortly after. We all had the garlic mushrooms, but when they arrived they weren’t very hot, however, Vicky quickly sorted the problem and fresh mushrooms were brought out promptly piping hot with another apology. The rest of our Sunday lunch went without any issues and was absolutely gorgeous. We will definitely be returning Thankyou to Vicky and the team!

Excellent Sunday roast! The turkey roast was delicious, with lovely veggies & Yorkshire! The “mini” brownie was excellent, and very sizeable for a small portion! Beautiful location, will definitely be back.

Went to The Fox for dinner after a big walk with our dog. Lucky we booked as it was very busy. Food was lovely and staff were nice and friendly and it was great that the pub was dog friendly. I understand that it was a busy Saturday but the service was just very slow, was sat for 15mins before even taking our drink ordered.

Great little Country pub. Food was delicious and service by Josh was second to none. Definitely recommend.

We went to The Fox House for a lunch to celebrate my mum’s 70th birthday. Admittedly, it was busy with the restaurant appearing to be at its capacity when we arrived at 13:00 for our booking. We decided to place our starters, mains and drinks order at the same time as it took around 40 minutes for the waitress to take our order. My wife ordered a rose wine but received a white wine. We decided to not pass comment based on how long it took to receive our drinks order and my wife enjoyed the wine irrespective. The food was very, very good, presented nicely, on lovely crockery. There was a nice sized portion for all dishes ordered. We placed our dessert order following our main course. All but one dessert was served. It took a further 30 minutes and two requests for the Sticky Toffee Pudding to arrive, by which time everyone had eaten and was ready to leave. The restaurant manager kindly reduced the bill by £30 and did not charge us for the late dessert. They had respectfully admitted their shortfall which I find honourable. In summary: Lovely meal which took too long. I’ll definitely return as it is a great pub and restaurant. Unfortunately it just wasn’t as streamlined as I’d have expected. If you’re in no rush, then you’ll enjoy yourself thoroughly.

Too busy sort out your car park and take on extra staff on busy days and may consider coming back .

The setting of this venue is of course gorgeous and the building itself was very clean and cosy. What really stood out was the friendliness of the staff and the service. 5 stars throughout

Had the loveliest of stays here at the Fox House. Beautifully located next to the national trust parks for stunning sunset walks. Rooms were neat, pretty and clean. Served at dinner by the charming Will who was so friendly, helpful and efficient! Would definitely return anytime.

I didn't stay in the hotel, we went for lunch with two dogs on Sunday. Food was brilliant. It was very busy, would have benefitted to having more staff on. Josh was polite and welcoming, can't fault him.

Just enjoyed a hearty breakfast before a walk in the glorious countryside that is all around the Fox House. I was warmly greeted by Josh who had got the real fire ablaze in the hearth providing a cosy atmosphere and warmth

Stopped off this morning for a break during our weekly walk and a coffee. We were impressed by the friendliness of the place and Josh was very polite and professional and made us feel very welcome. He spent time chatting with us about Vintage Inns and we will definitely be returning to the Fox and also try the Castle Inn at Castleton. An excellent ambassador for the Vintage Inns brand.

Popped in to see if there was any tables available. Waited at the sign "wait to be seated" Person (Think manager) behind the bar made eye contact but ignored us for a while. Sure he's proberbly busy. Though he didn't seem welcoming. Then when someone finally came we asked if theres a table available and the manager / person who was there all along just shook his head. This isn't an issue but why not politely just say we are full up etc rather than leaving you standing there. Overall unwelcoming and won't be returning.

We were so excited for our dinner at The Fox House, and it absolutely lived up to our expectations! We loved the atmosphere, the service, and, of course, the food. We ordered the steak, which was cooked to perfection according to each person’s preference. The meat was impeccable—tender, flavorful, and freshly prepared. The Signature burger was also very juicy. The mac and cheese and Monterey Jack cheese sauce were the highlights—absolutely delicious and perfectly seasoned! We thoroughly enjoyed the experience and would definitely come back!

We booked a table for 5 adults and a child and were served by Vicky. The Sunday menu was really delicious, freshly cooked, lovely fresh veg and generous portions. Service was friendly and attentive.

Visited this evening for some dinner with my partner after a walk. Staff were all friendly from the moment we arrived, we were served by a very poilte young man named Will. The food was lovely, and also the pudding. Will definitely be stopping in again.

Regularly book Sunday lunch here after a good walk always great food can get busy so best to book to avoid disappointment special mention to Vicky always smiling and attentive with service nothing is too much trouble (extra gravy) yum. Have booked Feb 14th( so quiet table please Vicky) 20.00.

Six old friends met up for a lovely long leisurely lunch today. Been visiting this place for well over fifty years, an amazing place in a lovely location. Great food and drink all delivered to the table by our lovely waitress Jesse who was a delight to meet. Till the next time.

I stayed here for three nights with my partner, overall the stay in the hotel room was nice it was clean the bed was comfy except the pillows a bit hard for our liking and we had neck pain every morning, unfortunately the service and food was just not great. The service overall was disappointing and throughout the stay we felt it got worse and put a bit of a damper on our holiday, the food service was very slow throughout, the only time we had decent service was at the start of our stay as we got our food quite quick but it was because we were the only people there for breakfast, the full English was okay but you couldn’t even get a knife through the croissants they were rock hard, in the evening the service was fast when we sat near the bar and just ordered the food and drink by going up to the bar but when sat in the restaurant the service was very slow one night we sat for almost an hour waiting to have our empty plates taken and dessert order taken it then took over half an hour for dessert which was just a brownie and ice cream the next night was a bit quicker but when we arrived the server at the front desk appeared annoyed there was little greeting and when ever she was serving us it just wasn’t very polite. we asked for dessert menus we seemed to be forgotten the person we asked walk past us twice, after we still hadn’t had any menus in the end we decided to skip dessert and just go back to the room, when we asked for the bill for the dinner, I explained I had a voucher without asking the server took my phone from my hand and walked off with it to scan the code she didn’t ask or say she would need to scan the phone at the till. The last morning we had a different server who was lovely and very attentive breakfast was quicker with service but again we were the only people. It was shame it was our last morning that we felt we finally had good service at breakfast. I think I was stay here again I would pay to have food included I the stay would eat else where

We came today for Sunday lunch. It was one of the best roasts I've had in a really long time and i'm very picky when it comes to Sunday lunches! The staff were all really friendly and helpful even though the pub was packed and they were very busy. I wouldnt hesitate to rerturn. Highly recommend!

Went for a Sunday Roast. Food was excellent, compliments to the chef. Front of house staff unfriendly, and proper grumpy which let it down.. kind of ruined the overall experience so only 3 out of 5.

Booked a table for 9 of us for lunch on Saturday, and it couldn’t have gone better. Vicki took my booking and helped me update it seamlessly, even accommodating very particular dietary requirements with ease. Welcoming to muddy boots and dogs as-well! Fantastic place, staff and food and the most amazing smells of wood fires.

Booked a table in advance were given a secluded table with broken heating in 3 degree weather, the fire door was constantly left open right next to table. Despite asking for a resolution or just to be somewhere warmer, no solution or meaningful apology was granted. The food was nice and we enjoyed all the dishes, however even accepting the busy nature of the venue, the service was very poor and we had to chase waiters around to be served…from sitting down, it took nearly three hours to receive mains and desserts. One of our friends was labelled a problem by management despite only asking for a proper answer to these glaring service issues which is frankly unacceptable in a dining environment.

Have come here for years, used to be the perfect place for a post climb pint. But in the last few years, the quality of pretty much everything has massively dropped. Food coming out cold, drinks over priced, managers blatantly not caring. This isn’t due to the bar staff or the chefs, this is clearly shoddy management making quick money grabs rather than maintaining quality control. We’d left it the first few times the poor service started happening, thinking it was just a once off. It is not. It is consistently poor from all aspects. Think it’s time, unfortunately to find a new pub. I will no longer be recommending, I will now in fact recommend not going. This pub has been ruined by bad management. Good luck to the rest of the staff on this sinking ship.

Disappointed would be an understatement! Having booked in advance for a table of 8, we arrived promptly to be seated a cold annexe of the building. There was nothing done to make our experience more pleasurable apart from the duty manager saying "we can cancel your food if you don't want to sit here". Totally unacceptable that they would rather turn away 8 customers than try and find a solution. When we asked if there was any alternative heating solution the answer was a straight no. Throughout the meal, she inconsiderately kept leaving the back door open causing the temperature to drop even further. Having sat down for 15 mins, no drinks order was taken and we were forgotten about in this cold, dingy part of the pub. Only when I managed to get the attention of the manager, she came to take our order. Her demeanour was off from the beginning, bad energy and a face to match. She took our drinks order, whilst telling one member of the party to speak up. The drinks arrived after a long period, whilst forgetting a simple glass of water. The food arrived at different times for the party, which I guess is understandable as it was a busy Saturday lunchtime. Apart from not having certain items on the menu, when I made enquiries she seemed annoyed to be asked, which was later confirmed in a conversation after the meal. I believe this woman needs some serious customer service training if she is going to be working the public and should understand that a customer is able to ask questions and shouldn't feel put out by doing so. The meal was mediocre at best, nothing that reflects the prices that they charge. Following our meal we ordered desserts and coffee together. They too came out separately, and at this point we were ready to leave. I went to speak to the duty manager to tell her to cancel the desserts, where she decided it was a good idea to rudely insult me. I quote " I could tell from when you walked in, that you were going to be a problem". Not referring to any member of the party but me, she mentioned that I asked too many questions, I explained to her I'm entitled to ask questions, I'm not being funny but if she can't answer basic questions to a customer without feeling aggrieved then she should not managing anything. I felt her comment was rude and inappropriate, I felt that she targeted me based on my skin colour and that she be spoken to about her actions as this is totally unacceptable. She then provided me with £30 off the meal as a way of shutting me up. At this point we were all fed up and ready to leave. Please avoid this place if you value your self respect and your hard earned money. We will not be returning.

I took shelter here on a stormy walk through Padley, and the staff were incredibly accommodating on a busy night and served us great meals and drinks. Especially our server Jess, and the manager that managed to squeeze us in.

Decided to go out for dinner on a bit of a whim. Was lucky that there was tables spare. The pub is in a fantastic location and the interior is exactly has it should be for what it looks like from the outside. Will and Jess who was working that evening was friendly and attentive. The food was very tasty, and catered well for my wife who is a vegetarian. Would highly recommend

Fantastic place! Had a really lovely meal last weekend. So friendly, with great service and brilliant atmosphere. Doggy friendly too - what's not to like! Would definitely recommend.

I won't be going back again sadly. This is now the 3rd (and final time) that i have had a negative experience at FH. A common tread is appearing, and it's in relation to customer service. The staff are at best not interested, they look like they don't want to be there and at worst they are rude. My interactions with staff leave you feeling like you've inconvenienced them. This weekend we visited Saturday, it was a busy day but the whole set up is poor. Staff are more likely to tell you what your doing wrong than saying hi and being helpful. I firmly believe of it wasn’t for the prime location that the poor customer service would cost this place. I wonder if the staff actually like working there. When staff rudeness is so prevalent it often comes from the management. The systems and processes are poor. We waited 20 mins for hot drinks and they were left at the end of the bar. Lovely location, but staff customer service needs huge work.

Expensive and disappointing. I almost paid just under £20 for an aubergine gratin... But turns out that (like other items) wasn't available. Drinks took ages to come, other tables even ordered the same drink three times. Food wasn't cold but certainly wasn't warm. Taste was bang average, which would be fine if they charged average prices... But it's extortionate for what you get. I felt bad for the serving staff who looked stressed and totally swept off their feet, otherwise I might have complained to be honest. Really disappointing because it's lovely inside and a lovely location and the staff seemed like they were trying to make the best of bad circumstances (but service was v slow). 2 hours in there and we could only fit in one course before having to leave for a bus. I'd recommend Longshaw cafe instead. Sorry, Fox House😭 but I don't want others to be similarly disappointed.

I recently booked a table at this pub for two friends and I. We were all very disappointed. Starters took almost 45 minutes to come out, 2 of which were scotch eggs. When they did come, they had obviously been kept warm for sometime and were not very appetising. The main course (3 burgers) came out over an hour later, all 3 were cold and one of them was imcomplete. There was no appology or warning about waiting time. We had to ask 3 times for the bill, we felt trapped. We paid well over £100 pounds for a terrible experience. I will never go back to this place, nor will I recommend it to anyone.

Great location and friendly staff. Went Sunday for a birthday meal with our daughter and her friend. Food was luke warm. Took my daughters food away to reheat the chips and burnt the burger. Laughable really. We won t be eating here again which is a shame.

Never been in a pub so busy in my entire life! Mark, Claire and their team made us very welcome from the off, I understand they are new management and looking forward to see what they do with the place in the coming months! Food was hot and delicious! Even better we could take the dogs in, 100% recommend but book in advance as it seems an extremely popular place!!

Popped in mid dog walk just after Christmas, was super busy but staff still really friendly and helpful. Vicky in particular made an effort to acknowledge us and make sure we were being served during what looked like a very busy bar area!

As someone who loves the Peak District and the surrounding climbing areas. The Foxhouse was a perfect stop for a post climb meal. With a good selection of drinks and a really good bar snack menu it’s exactly what we needed!

We've not been to the Fox House for some time and didn't know what to expect. We were not disappointed. The venue was warm and welcoming and the staff attentive and efficient. It was very busy, but we were well looked after by the host Vicky, who was lovely and kept us updated during a very short wait for a table. Great food and great location. We'll be back.

Booked a table for two people through phone and when I got there they told they are fully booked. They were not willing to help at all and literally kicked us out

Absolutely awful. It took over 2.5h HOURS for the meals to come out! Three meals never arrived. Half were cold. The poor kids were completely fed up. We will certainly not be wasting our time again!

We visited this restaurant on Boxing Day and were quite disappointed. Half of the dishes on the menu were unavailable, which made it difficult to enjoy a full meal as planned. On top of that, the side dishes we ordered were forgotten, which added to the frustration. While the food we did receive wasn’t bad, the overall experience left a lot to be desired. I understand it was a busy day, but better preparation and service would have gone a long way.

I've called in this pub/restaurant a couple of times now and on each occasion they've refused me in just for a drink I'm a paying customer and there were plenty of seating available inside and out, I will not be returning...

We stayed at the fox house on 7/12/2024 and we had a fantastic time. When we arrived t was quite busy but the bar service was very good. We were shown to our room and we were very happy with how spacious and clean it was. It was a little walk outside over the courtyard to our room but this meant it was very quiet. The room had everything you would need for a night away. We had food in the dining area off the festive menu , which had plenty of choice. Our waitress , Jess was very nice and nothing was too much trouble. The food was amazing. The following morning we had breakfast, which was equally as good, also with plenty of choice and all cooked fresh to order. We would definitely stay again and recommend. It’s such an amazing location with plenty of walks and not far from Matlock and chatsworth.

Been here many times and always great food and service. Last visited a few months ago when food wasn’t as good and service was really poor. Really wanted to give it another chance so booked in for Sunday lunch today . Pleased to say the food was superb and the service even better . Jess looked after us and was brilliant start to finish. Thank you so much .

We have been to this pub many times, and the quality of the food and service varies. The first time I ate here two years ago, the food was delicious, the place looked amazing, and I couldn't wait to come back again. However, every next visit, I was a little disappointed. It happened a few times that we had to remind the staff that we were still waiting for our order. On our last visit we really enjoyed the food, but it took 45min to bring two soups, and they arrived cold. We do appreciate the stuff tried to correct it and were very attentive afterwards. Overall, I really like this place, but because of the mixed experience over time, I will try other pubs in the area. I also find it a little overpriced. I didn't mind it the first time as the food and the service was spot. On a positive note, it's pet friendly, and they aways have extra doggie biscuits

Nothing good Coffees Luke warm We waited 30 minutes and then had to ask someone to come and take our order. The food then took another 30 minutes to arrive. The sea bass meal was lukewarm warm The greens and grains salad had no peppers, no ginger and pineapple dressing and 2 very small pieces of butternut squash. £14.95 for a bowl of salad leaves - I sent it back and asked for peppers and squash but even when it returned it was terrible. We go out for a treat but paid good money for food I could have cooked better at home. Very disappointed.

They have a problem with their billing system. Overcharged us £28.05. Chased and called several times over more than two weeks. Still haven't gotten the Refund. The manager first denied the bill was wrong, trying to explain to us there is extra charges for some dishes. Then We replied with evidence, including their online menu, which shows no extra charge. He then said the online menu is different to the hard copy. We asked for a photo of the hard copy. Of course, they cannot provide it. Then We got an apology email admitting their mistake, asking us to forget the menu and wanting to refund £30 to us. Well, thanks for the generous £1.95 compensation. We don't need that. Just refund us the £28.05 overcharge. I am not going to chase It again. You can't deal with dishonest people. But I will update this issue here in my review. Actually, I am very much looking forward to their replies here, explaining how they act right. And I am ready to post evidence. Update on 21 Nov: I called Josh on Monday. I was promised an email replay by Wednesday, the 20th. Haven't got any email or call. What a great service!! Final update: We finally got the refund over the phone.

Great food and fab service from Fraser

Having not been in there for a number of years I called in at teatime last Friday with my brother and two dogs. Freezing outside, We found a place near the blazing log fire and had a couple of pints. The staff were attentive and engaging. Victoria behind the bar took time to introduce the extensive menu to us and generally made us welcome. She also provided treats for our 4 legged companions. Overall a lovely experience.

It was my birthday and we had a lovely meal and my husband really enjoyed the venison pie. I had lasagne which was gorgeous. Thank you very much for the mini brownie and hot drink too. Josh the manager was very helpful and attentive.

I love coming to this place, the only thing that let's it down is inexperienced staff who lack attention to detail. Inform diners what isn't available before they order. Walking passed finished plates multiple times are a few simple things that could make a visit more pleasant. Being a previous trainer for front of house, i would love to come in and shake a few people by the shoulders. Saying that, all the staff were pleasant and friendly. Food quality could be slightly improved for those of us who like to dine a little later and probably spend more on alcoholic beverages.....

Fox House is such a lovely pub and we expected great things especially for the price of food and drinks. Visited mid-week after a hike and it wasn't particularly busy. Spent over £100 for a group of 4. I ordered the 'hot beef brisket sandwich on toasted artisan bloomer' which sounds delicious but was unfortunately extremely disappointing. Cold shredded beef between two over-toasted slices of regular looking white bread. The bread was hard and everything was cold including the fries. It also came with a pot of beef dripping sauce which came in a plastic pot similar to what you'd expect to receive at KFC. I ate the sandwich because we had just finished a 5 hour hike and was hungry. All of my friends meals were also luke warm and disappointing. Such a shame because it's a lovely pub in a great location. Do better Fox House - you have the potential, but sorry to say we won't be returning any time soon based on our experience.

Ordered at the bar, we were waiting some time we didn’t realise it was table service. Some menu items not available which was a little disappointing. Food for 4 all arrived cold. No one asked us how the food was even when taking the plates away because they knew… it was cold. (Meat shouldn’t arrive to the table cold). Disappointing, will not return.

Food was delicious, staff were friendly if a bit slow due I think to training a number of new members. BUT.. Only some of the food and drink was priced on the menu. We had to ask the price for some meals and many of the drinks were not priced. This seems to be a shocking trend in several dining places lately. Would have been higher rating without this pricing issue.

Terrible service, very slow, no organisation. Rude manager who seemed to think it was acceptable that it took an hour to get 2 drinks, a starter and a sandwich after having to ask and chase for absolutely everything. Good car park for a walk though. My suggestion would be to use the car park go for a walk and find a better pub after.

Just had a super meal, booked a table the day before as I know it's super busy at the weekends, glad we did. Our server was Maya, and she was extremely friendly and polite and had a lovely demeanour without being over the top, perfect for the hospitality industry. There are lots of food options, including plenty of vegan/vegetarian options. The pub is located in the Peak District, so it is frequented by hikers and those out for a nice meal - it caters and welcomes all. And it is dog friendly! All the staff are lovely even though they are rushed off their feet. There is a large carpark and an outside area with views over the moors. Perfect!!

Went as a party of 5 for a special occasion. Whilst the food was tasty, what arrived was not what was on the menu(daupinoise potatos were substituted for mash on the belly pork, and green beans came as broccoli on the sea bass weekend special menu) The main issue was how long it took. From arrival at 5:30 we didn't leave until after 8pm. Apart from ordering drinks on arrival we had extensive delays between courses- we even asked if we could have our desserts to take away (unfortunately not possible as nothing to put them in and chocolate trio not available anyway) Bill was £165 for 3 x 3 course weekend specials and 2 main courses and included 4 pints and an Orange juice In summary food was a decent quality but service some serious issues.
