Having not been in there for a number of years I called in at teatime last Friday with my brother and two dogs. Freezing outside, We found a place near the blazing log fire and had a couple of pints. The staff were attentive and engaging. Victoria behind the bar took time to introduce the extensive menu to us and generally made us welcome. She also provided treats for our 4 legged companions. Overall a lovely experience.

Service: Not nice the way how we got approached while heading the wrong direction in the dinning area! Food: Food came cold ,waited close to 30 min for food, even though it didn't seem that busy! The quality of food was low ,for that you pay, I would not recommend. I had planned to show peak district to my friends who live further away and had planned to dine there in the next few weeks, that will not happen!

Went as a party of 5 for a special occasion. Whilst the food was tasty, what arrived was not what was on the menu(daupinoise potatos were substituted for mash on the belly pork, and green beans came as broccoli on the sea bass weekend special menu) The main issue was how long it took. From arrival at 5:30 we didn't leave until after 8pm. Apart from ordering drinks on arrival we had extensive delays between courses- we even asked if we could have our desserts to take away (unfortunately not possible as nothing to put them in and chocolate trio not available anyway) Bill was £165 for 3 x 3 course weekend specials and 2 main courses and included 4 pints and an Orange juice In summary food was a decent quality but service some serious issues.

Gone downhill since change of ownership. Some staff pretty rude - person doing check in to the restaurant and the restaurant manager clearing tables in particular. Zero manners, look like they don’t want to be there. Certainly don’t seem to realise they are working in a service business. Looking at other reviews, the management either don’t care or don’t know what they are doing. There’s a whole stack of reviews since the change of ownership along the same lines. The food is very overpriced and low quality, beer selection uninspiring. The great setting doesn’t make up for it, a real shame.

One of the most popular spots in the Peak District, ruined by dreadfully slow service due to a permanently understaffed bar, especially on sunny days or over Christmas. Pained to say we’ll likely go again but only due to lack of another option. Would avoid if possible.

Not sure what was going on yesterday afternoon but there was clearly some serious issues. I’m not sure banning someone (not my table) who complained their food was cold after waiting an hour with children was your proudest moment. The excuses you were giving were extremely poor and insincere. If you have issues in the kitchen/ staff then close. If your bar tendered will not work together then it’s your job to manage the situation, but I think everyone there yesterday will be giving the place a swerve for now. If managing people is not your strength, or communicating with the public, maybe have a think if hospitality is the industry for you.

We waited 10 minutes before we asked to order drinks and some water for ourselves. It then took a further 10 minutes for the water to come, bearing in mind we were parched and had 3 hungry young kids. The menu is good but pretty pricey, nearly 20 quid for a burger so we anticipated eveything to be on point. We then ordered our food after the much needed drinks came and waited for another 45 minutes before our food came. During this wait, we had not a single staff member come to ask us how we were doing or to explain and apologies about the wait. The staff seemed totally lost and untrained. We had to complain and ask when the food would be ready and it was a further 15 minutes before it arrived. When the food eventually came, the extortionate burger was stone cold, as were the chips. We were not happy, complained and walked out hungry. It’s outrageous to be charging those prices for such a diabolical service and product. This place was decent once. Not anymore.

Someone in the party was given a stodgy curry that had been sat around for a while. One of the waiters kindly offered to replace the curry, but what came back to us was the exact same dish but heated up, with the same rubbery, hard chicken cut in half to disguise that it was the exact same bowl of food? We asked for one jug of tap water 3 times which never came, one dish took nearly an hour to arrive (after first being given to someone else) and a few drinks just never arrived. We ended up cancelling the drinks we had been waiting on for a very long time, paid and left. We were trying to take my dad out for a lovely birthday meal, and surprise him with a birthday cake (that we were told could be brought out at the end of the meal), but ultimately we were forgotten for most of the time we were there and the food wasn’t of good quality, which is a shame considering how incredible the food here used to be 😔

I'm sorry but it seems the fox house is struggling at the moment, we went on the bank holiday and arrived at 12 for lunch, we were shown to our table with happy smiles & they took our drinks and food orders but it soon went wrong from there. We had to ask if they'd forgotten us for our drinks because it was taken so long which in itself is no Biggie but it was an hour before even the starters arrived and when they'd taken the plates away we told them we were now running late so please don't be too long with our mains, they said yes of course! but after waiting half an hour more we told them we would have to settle our bill and leave but as we got up they all came round to say the food would be 5 more minutes so we stayed, well 5 minutes turned into 15 but it did arrive....it was the smallest coldest main I'd ever had and definitely not worth the money even with the £10 they'd knocked off as an apology. I'm sure this is a one off and maybe a bank holiday thing but everyone was complaining so maybe it wasn't a good idea for the fox house to open on bank holidays if they haven't the right staff.

The food quality was terrible, particularly considering the pricing. I ordered the burger which was disgustingly disappointing. There wasn't even enough brisket to fill one single fork. The skewers for the money was so poor. 5 pieces of dry chicken, the slaw had no mango, no creamy feel like a classic slaw would have. No dressing. Very much not the food I have had previously.

The food was fantastic. The experience was dissapointing though. It was a really slow dinner, not many tables in, and we had to hunt staff down around the restaurant when we needed anything. Staff member asking us to wait while they're on their phone, we had to get up buy another drink at the bar separate to our tab, and had to find someone so we could pay our bill and leave. We were wanting to have dessert, but it was too much of a hassle to continuously look for someone, so we paid and left. None of our dishes were cleared, and honestly I felt like the staff were so in their own world just chatting to each other and couldn't be bothered because it was slow.

I used to really enjoy visiting the Fox House and the food has always been great. Unfortunately this was not the case when I visited on Tuesday evening. I ordered the chicken parmigiana and a side of halloumi fries. The chips which were with my meal were cold so I sent them back. They came back hot but soggy. The halloumi fries were also only luke warm. The chicken was squeaky, like that processed stuff you get in the cheaper restaurants, and the outside of the chicken was burnt. Other members of the party also did not enjoy their food and said it was like it had been sat waiting for ages to be brought out. Nobody came round to check if everything was OK with our meals. Otherwise, we would have reported the issue. Posirives are that the staff are friendly, it's a nice atmosphere, the locations brill and it is very dog friendly.

While visiting the absolutely stunning Peak District, we had a reservation for dinner. On arrival we were shown to our table and then the show began. While choosing our meal off the menu we ordered drinks. Food ordered and no drinks came, after half an hour and several attempts to inquire about our order and with the evening getting on I went to the bar myself, after a 15min wait standing at the bar, with several staff members noticing I had decided to do self service, the bar person took my order….a local ale, unfortunately glass filled with just suds, keg was out, no problem select again, second ale selection, again second glass fills with foam. At this point I asked for any type of beer. Paid and returned to table. Food arrived after another 15mins, unfortunately no cutlery. My colleague at this point ordered red wine to accompany meal. Finally finished our meal, after which red wine and drinks arrived! We suggested at time of payment all was not good, the reply was a shrug of the shoulders and giggling the staff member said “sure all the staff have quit anyway” OK, proper faulty towers material. All this with a bill just shy of 150, for two, seriously!

Just been here this evening for what was thought would be a nice Sunday meal. To start things off we was seated and left menus, half hour went by and still not service even though waiters was present. So I finally got up and went to ask if it was even table service or shall I order from the bar and got told it was table service and basically they'd forgot about us (Mrs and baby) they finally took our order and another half hour went by baring in mind we still had no drinks. They then brought the food out and still no drinks, so I ask politely asked if we could have our drinks. So in the meantime we started to eat out food, took one mouthful and the turkey and carrots on the Sunday roast was stone cold and also missing stuffing on the plate and my Mrs skewer and chips was stone cold. Before they'd even brought drinks I went up to the bar and complained the food was cold. They then accepted the mistake and expectedly didn't charge for the food or drinks but at this point we'd had enough and just wanted our drinks and to leave rather than having to wait for food again as we had a very young infant with us. To then top the night of I went to take my first sip of my pint and they'd brought me a completely different beer to what ordered. So we are now home and completely wasted our Sunday evening before i work tomorrow left hungry and unsatisfied. The staff was friendly enough I must say but still very disorganised to say the least.

Decent place to stop for a drink, albeit expensive. Great location. Unfortunately it seems they’ve fallen into the all too common trap of complacency as they are so fortunate to have a great building and location that they don’t bother improving the basics such as food and service. The menu looks great but is executed poorly. It’s not terrible, but it’s certainly less than mediocre. For example, plain boiled new potatoes and broccoli - no flavour, no butter, very dry and clearly prepared earlier and microwaved to serve. Fish dry and overcooked. The service is really what lets the place down. The female staff members are consistently polite and helpful but I’ve been unfortunate enough to be served by the male staff members on most occasions. These male staff members, in particular one who I believe is called David, are so rude it’s almost comical. No “hello”, no smile. Just surly attitudes, eye rolls and abrupt service. David makes no effort to even look in your direction, had a bizarre attitude of being “above” his own job and rolls his eyes as you order drinks and snaps at customers when they don’t hear him mumbling like a teenager. A real shame. Beautiful building and such an amazing location but I know I, and my friends, will never bother with food again.

We had booked an early table, for a birthday celebration, as we had an hours journey afterwards. Initially we felt rushed to place our order so we chose our meals quickly, even though we were trying to catch up with friends that we hadn’t seen for a while. Even though we placed our order quickly, we then waited more than 45 min. for the food to arrive and this was after we had enquired how long our food was going to be. When the food arrived it was clear that it had been sat under heat lamps as the mashed potatoes had formed a crust. Even then the food was not very hot and had we not waited so long already we would have returned it. After we finished, our empty plates were left on the table even though servers walked past several times empty handed. As a result, we did not stay for dessert etc. and had to ask twice for the bill. We informed the member of staff who took payment of our issues but received only a scant apology.

I was absolutely shocked by such poor service!!!When I placed my food order,I specifically indicated that I am allergic to fresh onions and when my plate arrived at the table, there was not sliced but a half!!! of a whole red onion. It was just like a laugh in my face. I was very upset by such 'gift'. The next disappointment was that the food for my guests was delivered by an intimidating fella who even didn't apologise for the delay, plates arrived at our table in different times, first orders came so late that they were cold. Meanwhile, people who arrived much later than us were served before us. It was really bad experience, I wouldn't recommend Fox House to anyone due to its poor management and the staff rudeness.

Standards have certainly slipped since we last ate here. Waited 20 minutes for 2 x lime & sodas and a glass of milk for our 2 year old. 45 minutes in total including the wait for food, it’s very difficult to keep a 2 year old occupied in a high for that long we almost left. There was a hair in wife’s food. The coleslaw wasn’t a coleslaw, it was a dry salad with pineapple chunks…. Very bizarre. I had a stone baked pizza that didn’t taste like stone baked. Had a table booked, arrived and there was no obvious area to check in our arrival, so bobbed to the bar, was asked to wait at the end of the bar to be told, I am just making coffee I will be with you when I have finished. Seated in a tight corner in an almost empty room. Ordered drinks and food, good selection to choose, drinks and starters ok, however a super long wait for very disappointing mains, had to ask for more drinks whilst waiting. Mains were not really as described, I ordered roast veg wrap, full of salad only with hummus, brisket sandwich was super dry!..no one asked how our food was at any point, when we had finished eating, we were asked, 'is there anything else I can get you?'..nope just the bill. Will not return, or recommend. This used to be a nice place too.

Stayed here for our 10th wedding anniversary, great room , great food , was a tiny hickup but Ben was all over it and I can honestly say he went the extra mile to make sure we were OK. Fantastic views over the country side and Will definitely be returning. Thanks again Ben for looking after us.

This is a lovely cosy pub with beautiful outdoor views but the service and food today was very poor. When we ordered food (some v simple sides so nothing complicated or time consuming) we waited over half an hour despite it being quiet and had to ask them about it twice. Eventually a staff member went to get the food from the kitchen then handed the bowls to me to bring outside. I asked for a tray and was given a wet dirty tray to bring our food outside as if I was an unpaid extra waitress. The food was cold and chewy. It used to be much better than this, I am hoping it improves.

Really nice atmosphere for a sunny evening meal. Food is a bit pricey but nice. Waited for over an hour for a starter however which was disappointing.

Beautiful views looking out into the countryside. Interior is warm and welcoming. Staff are reliable, polite and table service was speedy. The food was full of flavour, reasonably priced and the wait time wasn’t long at all. The cocktails were delicious too. Overall, we really enjoyed our trip here and would go again. The manager on shift(Josh) took particular pride in ensuring guests needs were met and he was very helpful and polite.

had my graduation meal there, all of my guests were happy with the selection, they had many options for vegans/vegetarians

A message to management: sort the standards out. Service slow, incorrect orders taken, food quality poor, and portions getting much smaller despite prices going up massively. We’re semi-regulars to this pub, and then food and service has always been top-notch. We left the other day thinking “never again”. Wish we had read the numerous recent Trip Advisor reviews. A real shame. Management need to get a handle on this, otherwise they will continue to alienate those that come here regularly.

A lovely, former coaching inn on the edge of the moors. Does get a little busy at weekends but plenty of seating inside and out.

Too many Inconsistent sevice and food experiences. Made a 7pm evening booking on a Friday night and it was another let down. All the outside tables were still littered with glasses on arrival and our wait at the bar to be seated was not acknowledged even though we were in plain site making it not at all welcoming. The pub was busy but messy with tables not cleared for some time and dirty plates piled up at the end of the bar. Our not uncommon cocktail orders needed to be scrutinised for the ingredients needed which was surprising as the chap doing them appeared to be running the place. Ordered starters and mains from a good selective menu but waited a long time for the starters to arrive. Those plates remained there until we were about to be served our mains at 9pm!! We returned them straight away as the food was luke warm at best and chewy. We were told apologetically that they would be replaced but we had decided that the wait had been long enough so paid for the drinks and starters we ate and left. It was apparent at 4 other tables around ours that patience was wearing thin at the waiting times and the place was clearly understaffed. Walking out it was noted that the rest of the pub clearly wasn't managing as a whole and it wasn't a surprise that the toilets were not pleasant either. This place has a lot to offer in terms of choice on the menu and location etc and is clearly well used by people visiting the area but sadly lacks enough consistency to be visiting again.

Had a lovely time last night, great place to catch up with friends. Good atmosphere and drinks. Special mention to Ethan / Ham Sandwich at the bar - very helpful and efficient. Big praise to the young lad, credit to the place.

Bones in fish large and one of the cod was not cod it was pollock. Asked for a discount in someway but was told we do not do any type of discount. Then she said I will take off the hot drinks. They was adding water to the fish tank with buckets fish were flying round the tank not sure if that's good for the fish but who knows.
