I took my family for a meal here and asked if they catered to Gluten Free Allergies with an alternative menu. I was reassured that it was. I ordered specifically from this menu due to severe allergies that if too much could leave me in hospital or WORSE. about 25 minutes after we left the restaurant I started having a allergic reaction and needed a epiPen as my throat had started to swell. This was the only thing I had eaten in the time prior and I had been reassured by staff that there was NO GLUTEN present in the food. I shall not be back, and will be warning all to stay away from this restaurant, they do not cater to allergies at all and it seems like they don’t understand the severity of what they are doing… I just hope no one dies because of this hellacious restaurant.

Unfortunately the Foveran is not what it was before it changed hands last year. The rooms are very pleasant and the views lovely but the food is very variable and some of the staff have no conception of customer service.

Generally very good, scallop starter was a little tough/ overcooked but the mains…north Ronaldsay lamb was marvellous. Staff very friendly and attentive. Although most of waiting staff are young most seemed to know about the produce and meals. It has to be said the quality of food served was better before when Paul was owner and head chef. Let’s hope the chef(s) can improve to previous standards.

We stayed 5 nights and were looking forward to the food as the reviews had been amazing Unfortunately it did not come anywhere near our expectations Ordered porridge for breakfast it never arrived service extremely slow and disorganised We had pre booked 2 evening meals and after the first night we cancelled the second one. Several other people including us had to wait an extremely long time to get any food at all. My wife and the couple on the next table ordered the same dish all the plates when collected were still half full. We later learnt that the original chef and owners had been changed 12 months earlier The number of staff is inadequate for the size of the restaurant and they are trading on previous reputations

There is constant pressure on restaurants to outperform their competitors. The Foveran boasts a number of well-earned awards, so we decided to try it for ourselves. With an impressive view over Scapa Flow, it would be hard to beat the location. The service staff, too, were a credit to their job. Pleasant, attentive, and efficient. A little light on character perhaps, but that will develop in time. The cost of the meal, whilst not too excessive, implied a standard that aimed to impress, but in reality, we found it lacked a certain something? In general, the food was fine, but nothing that lifted it beyond other more reasonable establishments in the town. Where we expected something of imagination and/or a taste sensation, we found dishes that were nice but not impressive. Tasty but not inspirational, and whilst the ambience was pleasant, a softer or dimmed lighting would have created a certain sense of the special - even more so with those amazing views! Overall, we enjoyed our visit and would definitely return. We would even commend it to our friends, which is the acid test, but we'd love to see a higher level of taste and an even better experience! As a PS, the young staff are impressive and deserve your attention!!

Have eaten here many times. I noticed a difference in the menu from last year, and when I asked if ownership had changed, it has. But they still know their way with seafood! It’s a lovely restaurant with beautiful views of Scapa Flow, and it’s a restaurant with rooms, so we stay the night. ( Which means we all can have wine with dinner.) my husband and I both had the seafood special, which was sea bass, perfectly cooked. It had said served with risotto, but what we were served was rice, and not even Arborio. My husband had the scallops as a starter, I had a lobster salad, both excellent. The sticky toffee pudding was a little dry. But overall a recommendation as fine dining on Orkney.

Hard to say anything different from the other 5* reviews because they accurately reflect a great dining experience. From setting, view, service and above all food, @foveran takes the Orcadian experience to the next level. The Thai spirit fish soup was a standout, though the crispy roast chicken breast was superb. If you’re a chocolate lover and the chocolate fondant is on the dessert menu it’s a great way to end a fine dining experience. Reservations are a must and ask for a lochside window view if available.

We booked the Foveran for the last night of our holiday before getting the ferry back to Aberdeen. So glad we did, it was a great way to celebrate a really good holiday on Orkney. The view from the restaurant was great (we asked for a window seat when booking), and it had a really good atmosphere (we went on a Friday evening). The fillet steak was excellent. We had another fantastic evening at the Foveran. Changes we made to our booking were accommodated very helpfully. The service and food were absolutely first class. All three generations of our family thoroughly enjoyed every part of our meal and our fussiness was catered for without any negativity, as usual. We felt very reassured by all measures in place to meet the guidelines about Covid, and this didn’t detract from the experience of a lovely evening at the Foveran. The owners and staff can all be so proud of what they offer locals and tourists alike.

During our visit to Orkney we stayed in a cottage at the Bay of Skaill and the information folder recommended this restaurant. The restaurant is split into two separate areas and apparently the views are spectacular (unfortunately it was dark when we arrived). The food was of a high standard (particularly the steak), and portions were generous and well presented. All dishes had a wonderful combination of flavours and textures. Service was nicely paced and the waiting staff friendly and efficient. Cost for 3 courses with wine was £50 per head.

We had such high hopes after reading the reviews and had been told locally it was a great fish restaurant. Perhaps I should have looked at the online menus first. Relatively limited - 3 steaks, lamb, chicken, scallops & vegetarian & 2 fish specials. My starter of scallops was only just warm. Had it been a main course I would have sent it back. My wife’s main course of scallops was warmer. The ribeye I ordered wasn’t available so sirloin was offered as an alternative. Service was good but far too quick

We have just returned from four nights staying at the Foveran and we are so glad that we chose to base ourselves here for accommodation and dining. It is perfectly positioned for scenic views over Scapa Flow and as a jumping off point for touring Mainland. A 20 minute drive from Stromness and less than a five minute drive to Kirkwall. Plenty of parking space available as well. Our room was absolutely fine - a decent size, tea and coffee facilities, hairdryer, good wifi, plenty of storage space, comfortable double bed, modern en suite with a powerful shower. Really, the kind of room you’d expect in a high end three star hotel bordering on a four. Hence, much more than just a restaurant.Breakfast freshly and beautifully cooked to order, and a wide ranging breakfast menu.Evening dining an excellent experience. A fairly limited menu (don’t let that put you off though) but augmented by blackboard specials. Food was expertly cooked and attractively presented. Portions more than ample. For instance, I ordered a baked cod with lentil crust from the specials board which was as huge as it was delicious. They do all sorts of good things in preparing and flavouring their locally sourced vegetables. A good wine list and a broad choice of other drinks, including some of the excellent Orkney ales.Service at every point was outstanding. Polite and helpful, and the waiting staff really understood the menu.We felt very welcome from start to finish and can’t recommend this place highly enough. As others have said, the restaurant is very popular so if you’re booking accommodation and want to dine in, we’d advise pre-booking your table for dinner at the same time. Thanks to everyone at The Foveran for making our stay so pleasurable.

I wish I could give this another star. This restaurant with rooms was recommended by our self-catering place. It sits, just outside of Kirkwall, overlooking Scapa Flow. We we had lovely views out to the west, for dinner. The food was amazing. I started with the crispy grimbister farmhouse cheese. It was like a cheese curd, but using this fabulous, slightly sharp local cheese. Then I had the lamb. It was so juicy and tender, but the red wine and red currant sauce was unbelievable.

I visited this restaurant nineteen years ago following a local's recommendation, so return was a mix of nostalgia and wondering whether it would be as good as 2000. It was as good, if not even better. The restaurant has been expanded and has great views southwards across Scapa Flow and northwards to Kirkwall which were beautiful in the sunshine. The food, especially the main courses were perfection. I have rarely tasted a better fillet steak and the mutton was equally good. The starters of scallops were excellent, whilst the bere profiteroles demonstrated real imagination. Desserts of sorbet and crumble capped a great meal. Service throughout was friendly and well organised. We enjoyed our meal so much we booked again for another night and that too did not disappoint. Both evenings the weather was clear and the views stunning over Scapa Flow, would highly recommend a visit.

We were lucky enough to boom a table last minute and feel incredibly lucky that we managed, the food was delicious. As someone who eats fish, but not meat, I was delighted to see so many seafood items in the menu that didn't involve the sneaky bacon rashers or black pudding. The monkfish for main was cooked perfectly, but the real surprise was the side of vegetables served with the meals, I have never had carrots so tasty! My partner finished his entire steak, which I have never seen him do, and declared it was the best one he had. The dining room is light and airy, with lovely views out over the water and the staff were friendly and welcoming. I can see why this restaurant has so many great reviews.

We booked The Foveran for our wedding anniversary and we celebrated in style. They had decorated our table with anniversary confetti and made us feel special. It’s nice to sit in the lounge with a pre dinner drink whilst reading the menu, then get taken through when our first course was ready. We both enjoyed our food, the mutton was exceptional.

This restaurant really delivers on many levels: superb service, an excellent menu and great location. We actually liked it so much that we wanted to come back the following day but they were fully booked!

We had been meaning to visit this restaurant for some years. It was better than expected. Food delicious (fish and steak). Constructive criticism if there were to be any: the room is big enough to position the tables for both diners to enjoy the view and perhaps invest in a proper coffee machine. This is not a complaint btw! Still lovely!

We had a super meal here, the best of our week of dining out in Orkney. Great views, ambiance, interior decor and menu (which included excellent and exciting vegan options). The food itself was imaginative, beautifully cooked and delicious.

On the ferry over to Orkney we happened to see this sea food restaurant advertised in the Islander magazine and decided we’d make a point of visiting it,

Really lovely food and fairly priced given the quality, not cheap but not prohibitively expensive either. The Orkney beef fillet with haggis was superbly cooked and delicious. The presentation of dishes was beautiful, I was the only one of our group who had the dessert, but the pavlova was as light as a feather eventhough it looked daunting at first. Sadly the evening we were there it was raining and overcast, but on a good day the views from the restaurant across Scapa Flow would be stunning and to sit on the terrace with a coffee and liquer after dinner drinking in the view would be such a pleasure. Only think a little exasperating was no one to answer the phone in person when enquiring about booking for the restaurant.

This small community is to drive through, and not a destination. Because of the hour, we elected to stop here for dinner. The small restaurant was cozy, the service friendly and helpful and the food, surprisingly very good, beyond our expectations. The scallops were outstanding and the steaks were nothing less than perfect. A selection of food items for kids simplified our stop, and the selection of beers and ales made it even more interesting.

Sailed here, having started in Bodo, Norway. Enjoyed Westray and the Pierowall Bar/Restaurant. All 3 of us were happy with our food in the restaurant and drinks from the bar. Realised there was what seemed like a 'locals' bar when I walked to the toilets.

Just back from staying 3 nights in the wonderful very dog friendly Lynnfield Hotel in Kirkwall. We have stayed in several other hotels in Kirkwall but none of them came up to the standard of the Lynnfield Hotel. Malcolm and his staff couldn’t have made us feel more welcome than they did. Our room, the Melsetter Suite was just wonderful. A fantastic mira shower and a space age jacuzzi bath etc etc! The food was simply delicious. We had intended eating elsewhere on one of the nights but after dinner in the Lynnfield Hotel the first night we continued to eat in house for the duration of our stay. For dog owners, look no further. All the staff are very dog friendly. Rusty our Welsh terrier can’t wait to go back! Very highly recommended.

This hotel has very lovely rooms, all with an amazing view. The dining room has a conservatory with a view! Nicely decorated rooms with a tartan touch, comfortable beds, clean bathrooms, superb power showers and hot water, with good WiFi signal in the room. Food in the restaurant was delicious with lots of variety on the menu and the specials. Staff were all lovely, Warm, friendly, helpful and the service was excellent. Breakfast is pre-ordered the night before so it’s served very promptly at the time of your choosing. If you are stopping anywhere on the Islands, book a room at this hotel, you wont be disappointed.
